Expansion at Emory
I heard awhile ago that Emory was open for expansion. What happened? Who was invited to go on??
|
Emory will definitely be home to another sorority this year. 12 groups put in bids, and right now they are narrowing down the possibilities. I don't know which sororities, but it wouldn't completely surprise me if a sorority recolonized, as Emory has had several leave over the years. As it stands, there are currently 7 NPCs. Over the past few years, 4 of those have consistently made quota. Another group usually does or is close, and the 2 others do not. From the estimates I've heard, there should be a sorority established by April or so.
As for the men...I'm honestly not sure. I've heard rumors from time to time, but nothing concrete. |
Oh so they haven't choosen yet?? Thanks for the update!!
|
Which groups are there, and which are presenting? I tried looking it up on Emory's site, but came up zero.
I stayed at Emory while on a job interview many years back, in the ADPi townhouse. It was gorgeous then. Is it still? |
Emory has a great Greek Life Web site, including a timeline back to 1869! So you can find out what groups have been on campus and when they left or came back etc.
http://www.emory.edu/GREEKS/index.html My parents were both Greek at Emory, my mom was a founding sister of Chi Omega when her local sorority affiliated in 1959. It would be great to have her chapter back. I also know that there was a Delta Gamma chapter that closed in the mid 90's. The Atlanta DG alums are an especially strong group that could support a new chapter. |

When I stayed in the ADPi Lodge, only 4-5 sisters could actually live there, but there was a LOT of room for parties, etc. It was decorated in blues & whites, with a lot of yellows. I would have LOVED to have seen one of the other lodges, just for comparison, but we just didn't have the time - it was "see another lodge" or "drive to Macon". We went to Macon! Did ADPi make quota? |
i love how 10 organizations colonized at once - that must have been crazy.
there are five groups that were once on campus but are no longer: Alpha Chi Omega Chi Omega Delta Gamma Kappa Delta Phi Mu does anyone know when these groups closed cuz they only mentioned the year for AXO in 1987. Just curious... |
Alpha Phi has also been at Emory.

Chi Omega closed at Emory shortly before I got there, and re-colonized the year that I went through recruitment in '83. I'm not sure how soon after I graduated that it, sadly, terminated the chapter again. Maybe there wasn't enough time between the closing and the re-colonization? During the four years that I was there, KD and Alpha Chi also folded. :( All the closed chapters had lodges, so it wasn't a housing=image issue. |
Does anyone know the timeline of the expansion? Are they looking to colonize later this spring or in fall after recruitment?
If 12 orgs put in bids, do we know which ones and when they will be narrowed down? |
Emory has deferred recruitment, and only one NPC sorority historically participates in informal in the fall. As far as I've heard, they want to start colonizing this Spring, probably around April.
All the sorority townhouses are very cute, including ADPi's. :-) There are currently plans to build a new sorority "village" right across from fraternity row. As it stands, only 4 girls can live in the lodges. The plan is to build larger houses for about 30 girls. Emory recruitment is going on right now, so we won't know who makes quota until Sunday. However, ADPi did make quota last year. There used to be a picture of me on the SDT section of the site, but one of our Rho Gammas was in the picture, too, so they replaced me. :-( I don't know the exact dates for any of the sororities closing, although Alpha Phi was around for about 8 years (or so) in the 90s. A few years after they closed, Emory opened for expansion again, and SDT came on campus. Now back to studying... |
Side note: tonight was supposed to be pref night, but it was cancelled because of SNOW! :)
Yayyyy!!! Snow!!! |
I heard that everyone had a very successful recruitment. Congratulations to all of the chapters at Emory!
|
Emory had a fantastic recruitment. About 100 girls dropped out of rush, but of the ones who stayed in, only 2 did not get matched,
|
Any results? Quota, etc?

I heard that quota was 50 and that all but one chapter matched.

This is kind of off topic but is Dooley still at Emory? :)

Here's the Wheel article:
ISC inherits Pike's place on Frat Row University plans addition of new campus sorority By David Marek Staff Writer February 08, 2005 After a fall semester full of changes for Greek life, University officials declared last week that more change is on the way. As soon as next month, the Intersorority Council could start using the former Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house to hold its weekly meetings and next fall sorority members will begin living there. Officials also plan to bring a new sorority chapter to campus. Among the candidates are Alpha Phi, Alpha Chi Omega and Gamma Phi Beta, sororites, according to Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Dan Richter. Richter said administrators decided to move ISC into 22 Fraternity Row, the former Pike house, for financial and community-building reasons. “[University Housing] needs to recoup money every year from the house, so to let it go unfilled for even this semester is taking a big hit for Emory University housing,” Richter explained. “Rather than just having 40 residents live in there they thought it would be more appropriate — and I agree — to continue to have a Greek presence on the row.” The former Pike house has remained vacant since Dec. 17, the date set by Senior Vice President and Dean of Campus Life John Ford for the fraternity’s expulsion from campus for misbehavior. Currently, ISC theme housing occupies the fourth and fifth floors of Harris Residence Hall. Richter was not certain who specifically would be chosen to live in the house, although he said sorority leaders would probably be given priority. This will not be the first time that a fraternity house has been converted into theme housing for ISC. When the Sigma Nu and Phi Delta Theta fraternities were temporarily kicked off Fraternity Row in the early 1990s, their houses were converted into intersorority housing. Richter said that the past ISC theme houses were successes. “It worked out really well, there weren’t any problems,” Richter said. “The women enjoyed it, the men enjoyed it, of course, and I think we’re looking for the same thing here.” The length of time ISC will occupy the house has yet to be determined. Richter said it would be influenced by the construction of sorority lodges, which are scheduled for completion in fall 2006. Emory’s search for a new sorority began after the National Panhellenic Council — an umbrella organization for 26 sororities — told University officials that the school could support the addition of a new chapter, based in part on Emory’s recruitment numbers from the past few years. “We recognized that there was enough of a niche for another [sorority] to come in and do well,” Richter said. Emory created an extension committee, comprised of five students and three staff members, to choose from 11 interested sororities. The committee met with the representatives and determined that the Alpha Phi, Alpha Chi Omega and Gamma Phi Beta were potential candidates for the extension. According to Richter, Alpha Phi and Alpha Chi Omega sororities were selected as potential candidates because they were once members of the Greek community at Emory, giving them an established alumni base. Gamma Phi Beta, which has never had a chapter at Emory, was selected because of its strength as an organization and its substantial national alumni base. In Fall 2005, members of the chosen sorority from other schools will help establish a base membership for the new organization. Richter hopes that with the help of the newly recruited members, the new sorority will be ready for spring recruitment. “[The new sorority] will probably participate in Novemberfest as a full group, and the goal is for them to do 100 percent of recruitment on their own, with maybe some help from some of their advisors,” Richter said. — Greek Life Beat Reporter David Marek can be reached at dmarek@learnlink.emory.edu. |
Yay! I'm of course hoping for Alpha Chi, but all three are fabulous.Keep us up-to-date!

Any of the groups would be a great addition, since chapter sizes have increased so much there really is need for another. I'm wondering about the validity of the logic that Alpha Phi and Alpha Chi Omega were once on campus, therefore there exists an alumnae base to support the chapter. This doesn't take into consideration that a) a large percentage of Emory students leave the area after graduation and b) Atlanta is such a melting pot that any GLO would be well represented in its population. Of our full advisory board and house board, all but one or two came from other Kappa chapters. Just hope that whichever group joins, thrives! |

Our Atlanta alumnae are an active group of very involved Alpha Phis who would be great at supporting a chapter in their area: http://www.alphaphionline.com/atlanta/ |

http://www.atlantapanhellenic.org/members/ Out of 26 NPC sororities, 21 have representation on the council, which is one of the highest levels of participation that I have seen. |
That is outstanding for the Alpha Phis!
I just did a quick cut and paste from the Kappa database into Excel to get an idea of what happens to Emory alumnae. Of those initiated during the four years I was there, 25% are still in Atlanta. My alumnae experience is that 10% alumnae participation is the average. So, thank goodness for other chapters, for us and for all NPC groups! |

The Atlanta Alumnae of Alpha Chi Omega also have an amazing site - http://www.axoatlanta.org/alpha_home.htm And KKG as well! http://www.kkgatlanta.org/ Edited because I just found Gamma Phi's Atlanta Alumane site even though the Atlanta Alumnae Panhellenic site doesn't have a current listing for it: http://www.gammaphibetaatl.com/ Great websites marketing greek life! |
Several of my collegiate sisters moved to Atlanta after graduation and are members of the alumnae chapter in Atlanta. They seem to have a ton of members.
Expansion is so exciting :) |
When are presentations?
|
Our Atlanta AC is a very good chapter.
We actually have two AC's in the general Atlanta area (though I don't exactly know where the Atlanta Southern Crescent group technically is). |
Ok, I went back a page and saw the comment about presentations and I didn't even know we were considering Emory............so much for being in the proverbial loop.

Of course the Atlanta Gamma Phis are good! - GPhiBLtColonel is a member of the Atlanta Southern Crescent. I believe that the Southern Crescent gals are in the neighborhood of Newnan and Peachtree City. At any rate, all three sororities are solid choices for Emory. It will be great to know who they finally select! .....Kelly :) |
I love expansion news!! Any of the three will be a great addition (although you know who I am hoping for!!)
|
We've already presented and a decision is supposed to come next week.
|
Wow that's soon! I don't think Alpha Phi has presented yet.
