Did you know?!?!?

I got this in an email forward and felt so strongly about it I'd like to post it here....it had pictures too but I'm unable to post those. I felt it would be better to post this here than in Chit Chat.

DID YOU KNOW?
As you walk up the steps to the building which houses the U.S. Supreme Court you can see near the top of the building a row of the world's law givers and each one is facing one in the middle who is facing forward with a full frontal view ... it is Moses and he is holding the Ten Commandments!

DID YOU KNOW?
As you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on each lower portion of each door.

DID YOU KNOW?
As you sit inside the courtroom, you can see the wall,
right above where the Supreme Court judges sit,
a display of the Ten Commandments!

DID YOU KNOW?
There are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments in Washington, D.C.
DID YOU KNOW?
James Madison, the fourth president, known as "The Father of Our Constitution" made the following statement:

"We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."
DID YOU KNOW?
Patrick Henry, that patriot and Founding Father of our country said:

"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ".

DID YOU KNOW?
Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher, whose salary has been paid by the taxpayer since 1777.
DID YOU KNOW?
Fifty-two of the 55 founders of the Constitution were members of the established orthodox churches in the colonies.
DID YOU KNOW?
Thomas Jefferson worried that the Courts would overstep their authority and instead of interpreting the law would begin making law an oligarchy the rule of few over many.
DID YOU KNOW?
The very first Supreme Court Justice, John Jay, said:
"Americans should select and prefer Christians as their rulers."

So then can you tell me how, then, have we gotten to the point that everything we have done for 220 years in this country is now suddenly wrong and unconstitutional?

It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a mess about having the 10 commandments on display or "In God We Trust" on our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance. Why don't we just tell the 14% to Sit Down and SHUT UP!!! Or go back to their country to live.

My own words: While i do believe strongly in what the person who started this has stated in the alst paragraph, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if any of the historical facts here are accurate? I just find it kind of contradictory if the Supreme Court rules that the Ten Commandments cant be displayed in a court house if they themselves have them hanging in their court room. Anyone know????

Also, I'm sure I offended some by posting this. Partially this was my intent for a selected few here, but I dont think badly of the rest that may feel differently than me. This is just my opinion, and everyone has one :)

I can't answer your historical questions (and as with most quotations from the time, unless they were written in a publication by the supposed author, accuracy is never assured), but dude this post is so funny. Here:

a.) this doesn't represent "everything we've done for 220 years"

b.) the entire point of the constitution is to make religion free and accessible for everyone, making none of them illegal

This is great, just so funny - "If you don't believe in God, go back to your own country!" I hope this isn't the part you 'strongly agree' with, because I'm an American citizen, 5th generation Irish Protestant, and my little brother is an atheist. Boy, I'd hate to have to send him back to his nation - wherever the hell that would be. It's just nonsense, kiddo - rule your own life by God, rule the nation by law, and never the twain shall meet.

Also, the Supreme Court building, the Capital building, etc - these all weren't built on the day the Constitution was signed. In fact, DC wasn't even the capital of the nation then, IIRC. So these were decisions made post hoc, and they were poor ones. "Majority rule" may apply to lawmaking, but it does not apply to constitutional protections - and the Ten Commandments have no place in lawmaking, even if the majority of them have become, in turn, laws. They're great moral rules, but that sort of process is expressly forbidden.

Do you firmly believe in telling 14% of our fellow Americans who do not believe in God to "Sit down and shut up" and to "Go back to their own country to live"? Also, why would you intentionally offend a selected few here? I'm trying to clarify because this post was so long and so full of holes that I am confused.

I think that religion is a private issue and shouldn't be forced down people's throats. I respect the diversity of our nation enough to understand that 'majority rules' isn't always what is best. I really believe that freedom of and from religion is the foundation of our nation and shouldn't be undermined.

Oh hell no!

What she said! Where do some people get off being high and mighty and holier than thou? (I just gotta ask!)

I don't get the "my way or the highway" crap. Or the "my way is the only way to worship". No wonder more and more people are turned off by religion. We are a diverse nation and dammit I hope we can keep it that way without religion being shoved down our throat. How I worship (or not worship) is no one's business and dammit I am not going to let a bunch of zealots chase me out of MY country!

Did you know that Snopes.com is the bomb DOT com?

Did you know that I have been to the Supreme Court and what they say in their lecture is pretty much identical to what Snopes says?

Did you also know that nowhere in the Catholic catechism are we encouraged to promulgate lies on the interweb and embarass other members of our faith?

Did you know that every fourth email forward is a lie?

BOYCOTT INTOLERANCE!

Did you know that 95% of statistics are made up on the spot and 100% of Christians that I've talked to today agree with the seperation of church and state and all but one of them is rabidly pro-choice?

This is just my opinion. I'm only trying to piss off a select few, and I respect everyone else's opinion. :)

The U.S. was never as Christian as today's Evangelicals claim, nor will it ever be.

Benjamin Franklin would despute most of that e-mail. It was he who altered the Constitution to change a reference that our laws are the will of God. Instead it references that we are rational beings.

Yes. I have read his autobiography. He felt the Quakers were lovely people but got little out of organized religion.

Interesting. Since you are such an expert on how the founding fathers felt about these matters, why don't you tell us what Monroe had to say about allowing the opinion of the majority to fully override the rights of the minority?

The issue of religion among the founding fathers and early presidents is not as simplistic as this makes it out to be. Many of them were members of a church at one point in their life, but some left it or were only members for social reasons. Others, while belonging to a church, were freethinkers who did not agree with every teaching of their church. And, as pointed out, just because they were Christian does not in any way mean that they thought religion and the law should intermingle. The separation of church and state was written into the Constitution for a reason.

But hey, did you know . . .

-- that John Adams said, "This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it."?
-- that Ben Franklin said, "Lighthouses are more helpful then churches."?
-- that Thomas Jefferson said, "I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming feature" and "The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the Supreme Being of His Father, in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter."?
-- that James Madison said, "During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry, and persecution."?

and furthermore, did you know that if you wanted to kick every American who is NOT Christian out of the country, that list would include Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, Helen Keller (gotta love Helen Keller -- oh, wait, wasn't she a socialist too?), Frank Lloyd Wright, Mark Twain, Robert Frost, Susan B. Anthony, William Howard Taft, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Paine -- and on a slightly less serious note, Marlon Brando, Katherine Hepburn, Bill Gates (heh), Kurt Vonnegut, and Rob's brother?

*Side note! I have no idea how accurate all of the above facts are, because half of them I just ganked off websites. But I can guarantee that they are more accurate than the facts in the original post in this thread, because that would not be hard.

First off i believe i said this posting was sent to me in an email and at the end i was asking if anyone knew the accuracy of the historical facts that the author of the email(it was forwarded to me so it wasnt the person who sent it to me), thus I have never claimed to be an expert on how our founding fathers felt about such matters.

Yes, you've managed to embarass Christians and offend non-Christians. Congratulations, Mary, that's really loving of you. I'm sure Jesus would be very proud of your actions.

You now know that the email was a lie. In addition, here's some more material on the founding fathers, or at least one of them...

John Jay was an anti-Catholic bigot who sought the expulsion of all Catholics from the state of New York. How very Christian of him.

And people wonder why there are so many people with strong feelings against the religious right.

This thread is just tacky.

It's not succeeding in making anyone think about their beliefs. Instead, it's creating a strong sense of dislike for the people who post these kinds of things.
