Racist radio station--this is crazy!

I received this in an email today and i am horrified. This is absolutely disgusting and completely racist. This woman deserves to be fired immediately. How DARE she make light of what happened. And to use blatantly racist terms like that is disgusting.

Here is what I received:
************************************************** **

In what has to be one of the most idiotic displays of the first amendment, New York City radio station Hot 97 Miss Jones in the morning program has been airing the attached "parody" of We are the World, making fun of tsunami victims, apparently taking delight in the over 200,000 lives that have been lost in one of the worst tragedies in history. As if the deaths weren't enough, Hot 97 has also added an element of racism, just in case the situation wasn't desctructive enough.
Sample lyrics:

"There was a time, when the sun was shining
bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan.
Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high
Came and washed your whole country away.
And all at once, you can hear the screaming
chinks.
And no one was saved from the wave.
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen
swept away.
You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches
swim.'

[Chorus]
"So now you're screwed. It's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your ass away. Go find
your mommy.
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her
head.
And now your children will be sold. Child
slavery."

The links below offer good continuing coverage of this idiocy, including links to Hot 97's half-assed apology and another mp3 that has an asian cast member getting torn down when she has the gall to object to the content. You would think that the sheer devastation of the tsunami would unite us as to understand the fragility of humanity and that tragedy knows no skin color. Yet Hot 97 has decided to use it to further divide us, almost implying that the deaths were acceptable because it happened in third-world southeast asia. Absolutely sick. I encourage you to forward this to anyone who may listen to Hot 97 in New York and
encourage them to boycott the Miss Jones show, until a more substantive apology is issued and broadcast on
air. Also blitzing Hot 97's email account and their sponsors should also demonstrate the outrage that should be apparent.

You've got to be shitting me right? No one can be this ignorant right?

Damn... nope they are that f*cking ignorant... to bad they don't live in Canada... it'd be a blast nailing them under our hate laws.

At the very least the radio station should have it's licence suspended, the "personalities" (using term broadly) fired-fined-charged and hopefully locked away for a little while...

_Opi_ 01-25-2005 10:41 PM

she is one sick lady!

OtterXO 01-25-2005 11:25 PM

Okay...I usually don't get offended by non-PC stuff, but this is ridiculous. I'm really surprised that a well known NYC radio station would air something like this...that's just disgusting and extremely in poor taste.

Peaches-n-Cream 01-26-2005 01:25 AM

I heard excerpts from this song on the news last night. This is what happened when someone objected to the song:

Quote:

On this tape you hear them introducing the "Tsunami Song," then Miss Jones and co-host Todd Lynn launching into an abusive tirade against Miss Info when she voices her objection to it. Miss Jones finally tells Info she's only complaining because "you feel superior, probably because you're Asian."

Then, after Miss Info has said the song is offensive to Asians, co-host Todd Lynn informs her: "I'm gonna start shooting Asians." Yes, he really says that. It's at 3:37 on the mp3.

I really don't understand how they can mock of one of the biggest tragedies the world has experienced. I am offended by the blatant racism and bigotry behind this song. How on earth could this be considered funny by anyone?

PM_Mama00 01-26-2005 02:58 AM

Wow. I honestly cannot believe that would come out of the mouth of someone who has, I'm sure, experienced racism in her life.

Flame me if you will, but if this were about another race and not Asians, this would have made exploding news. This is the first I've heard of this situation. How f*^%ing unfortunate that these disgusting creatures could have the "creative" minds in making up something like that. I'm truly disgusted by ANYONE making a mockery of what happened in the Asian countries. That even goes for those who are creating false charities and stealing the money.

I can't believe how sick and demented and STUPID some people can be.

Jill1228 01-26-2005 05:19 AM

Oh hell to the no!

What a bunch of sick f*cks! http://www.my-smileys.de/smileys2/2up.gif

The public deserves MUCH more than an apology. Some heads need to roll!

Rudey 01-26-2005 12:03 PM

How many of you listen to Hot 97?

It's been in the local news since Monday in NYC. I think that it's a local show so it might have taken a while to become a national story.

City Councilman John Liu and many of his colleagues have called for an FCC investigation.

moe.ron 01-26-2005 12:27 PM

As repulsive and repugnant as what they said was, its not for the government to decide whats in bad taste. Was what they did obscene? I don;t know, but the FCC doesnt let you go to trial on each case they charge. Hopefully, the market will speak, with the dj's, producer and station manager fired and advertisers pulling their ads to hurt the station.

Dionysus 01-26-2005 04:26 PM

Um...check this out.

navane 01-26-2005 05:20 PM

That segment was completely tasteless and lacking in sound judgement.

For what it's worth, the station has pulled the show:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/0...eut/index.html

I like the way HOT97 made a desperate attempt at the end of their statement to keep their advertisers from pulling their ads (read: $$$) from the station. Pathetic.

http://www.hot97.com/

I guess some people feel that the way to gain "fame" is by being nasty and crude instead of by actually being clever and funny. Doubly pathetic.

You know what's sick is that some stupid trendy teenager or college student will decide that this shirt would look fabulous with their faded bootleg cut jeans and Ugg boots or stilettos.

Jill1228 01-26-2005 05:25 PM

I'd like to see someone wearing that shirt get a good ol' fashioned BEAT DOWN!

you are absolutely right. the fact that it is asians that are being discriminated against makes it "not as important". i can't even imagine the outcry this would have received if it was about african-americans. it would be all over the news.

it still makes me so angry to think that this hasn't gotten the attention it deserves yet stupid fraternity pranks become front page news.

Peaches-n-Cream 01-27-2005 11:18 PM

This show has been suspended. According to www.hot97.com website:

"New York City - Miss Jones and the HOT 97 Morning team have been indefinitely suspended for the airing of a song that made light of a catastrophic event, as well as comments made at the time the song was aired.

Earlier this week, Miss Jones said on the air "I apologize to all who have been offended by my poor decision to go along with playing that insulting (to say the least) Tsunami song. I should have known better and I didn't. So I'm sorry and hopefully we can move forward from this, or I can move forward from this being a better hostess, because I am better than that, and I know better than that -- and you deserve better radio than that."

While Miss Jones has apologized on the air, in the media and on the HOT 97 website, station management felt that stronger action was necessary to demonstrate the severity of the situation.

Emmis Radio and HOT 97 will not tolerate such derogatory and racially insensitive content. This incident in no way reflects the spirit of HOT 97. The station has a long-time and well-known reputation for community involvement and support.

Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said, "What happened is morally and socially indefensible. All involved, myself included, are ashamed and deeply sorry. I know the members of the morning show are truly contrite. They know their actions here are inexcusable."
We would like to clarify that no company advertising on our station had any connection to the Tsunami Song and no company advertising on our station endorsed or sponsored the offensive material aired on the "Miss Jones in the Morning" show._ We apologize for any misunderstanding that may have caused listeners to believe that anyone, other than the morning show staff, was responsible for the material that should not have been aired."

AchtungBaby80 01-27-2005 11:52 PM

Whoa. Normally I am pretty un-PC myself, but at least I try not to be offensive and hurtful...I can't believe that. That show needed to be suspended!

UMgirl 01-29-2005 09:33 AM

About the title of this thread. No offense, you can't say a whole radio station is racist b/c of some stupid a$$ things that CERTAIN ppl (meaning SOME members of the morning show did). Miss Jones was a plain ignorant dumba$$ (scuse the lang but it's true) for what she did. Majority of the time that station owners and other personnel don't know what a producer and their set of radio personalities are going to put on the air, until it's actually on.

mmcat 01-29-2005 10:57 AM

pure stupidity.
local station played clips of it friday and verbally just shook their heads.
as they said, everyone writes song parodies, but some things are just inappropriate -- and this in one of the top markets in the nation.

actually that's not necessarily true. i used to listen to portions of the morning show on my way to work and i have heard (with my own ears) what i take to be derogatory and racist remarks. it is not a friendly and accepting radio station. many callers had opinions about people (mainly white) and the hosts would laugh and agree with their statements.

i know. i've listened. station owners should know what is going on at all times. this wasn't played once. it aired for SEVERAL DAYS! if they didn't know what was going on, they're fools.

qteasied 01-29-2005 04:57 PM

I personally don't like listening to HOT 97 because they make black people look like fools. They had to be pressured into making the NEWS a featured part of their broadcasts. The only thing they play is music and celebrity nonsense. And, they've also gotten into trouble because of what their ignorant DJ's broadcast over and over again. They don't really do much for the community but continue to air BS that makes us look bad...

I think you're right! It was the talk of the town right after it happened. :(

GermanTemplar 01-31-2005 12:11 AM

hmm... well we had a song in germany before the tsunami, called
"Perfekte Welle" = "Perfect Wave"

no radio station was allowed to air it since the tsunami, thuogh its a nice song.

hard to get aware of such "jokes"

but i think the whole thing about tsunami and "we donate" is a JOKE, i bet nobody would have really cared if it was off-season and "only"
asians would have died.that sucks most!

there wouldnt have been 500mill euros sent down there, if some germans had not died. that sucks too!

it became an inner and foreign politics issue because of germans that died out there. our "Mr Money" Minister named Eichel tried to get advantages in front of EU-Parliament, we`re under pressure because our economy is lagging, one day after our chancellor said "We donate 500mill euros immediatly"
a f***ing noble world we`re living in

and now we`re selling "the german system"(pre-warn) to the states that have been hit by tsunami
the german economy will get some nice comissions

and bush may be said that tsunami did not hit north corea

im ashamed
