Rush at San Francisco bay area schools

I didnt see these schools listed on the rush calendar so I wanted to ask if anyone knows the dates for these schools.

*CAL
*Santa Clara
*SFSU
*SJSU
*Cal State Hayward

Thanks much

On the Spring '05 Recruitment Calendar (in the recruitment stories forum), Santa Clara University is listed as having recruitment Jan. 28-31.

Cal has formal recruitment in the fall...7 chapters are doing spring informal recruitment 1/25 thru 1/27

NinjaPoodle 01-25-2005 06:43 PM

Thanks you guys. I guess I overlooked the Santa Clara U.:p I'll go to the other schools web sites and see if they have any info.

FYI
I want to know because I'm thinking of a photobook project that I want to shoot. :)

SFSU will most likely be doing COB for spring recruitment as there are only a handful of open spots in all three NPCs. I would check on dates and times with Glitter650 and ladyj39--they are the experts on all things SFSU! :)

greeklawgirl is correct! :)

The three NPC chapters at SFSU voted to have a completely informal recruitment in Spring. There will be no mandatory structure imposed by Panhellenic as far as parties and bid distribution are concerned.

Thanks Greeklawgirl & Ladyj39:)
Question:
Will they have a Bid Day?

I can only speak for Alpha Phi, and as of now, we're not. The other two houses may.

unstructured recruitment

would you please keep us updated as to how successful the unstructured recruitment method is and how it compares (statistically)with past results at your school?

greeklawgirl 01-27-2005 01:11 PM

FSUZeta, although I'm not in San Francisco right now, I can tell you right off the bat that the numbers for an unstructured spring recruitment at SFSU are going to be much smaller than the spring recruitments of years past.

When I was a collegian, Panhellenic HAD to go with a partially or fully structured spring recruitment because all 3 sororities were so far under total, it was easier on both the chapters and the PNM to keep things organized.

But in the last 2 or 3 years, we've been getting HUGE numbers in fall formal rush (well, huge for us anyway!). When I was in school, a good year had fall quota at 14. This past fall, quota was 27 or 28! All 3 sororities were at/over total or very close to it. There just simply aren't that many open spots this semester, so statistically the numbers will be puny in comparison.

However, I take this as a sign of success and the huge strides we've made as a Greek system over the last few years. If SFSU's greek system keeps going in this direction, I think that in a year or two, spring recruitment will be non-existent and we MIGHT even need to look at bringing a 4th NPC on board.

ladyj39 01-27-2005 03:23 PM

Greeklawgirl pretty much hit the nail on the head! :D

For the last two spring semesters, we had a partially structured recruitment where all the PNMs would come to an Open House (held on a Monday) and meet the three sororities. Each sorority would hold their own parties throughout the week and it was the PNMs decision which parties she attended. (The three sororities tried not to schedule parties at the same time). NPC also set a rule that no one can hand out bids until Friday at noon at a scaled down version of Bid Day. This year, we decided that since some groups could only take approximately 4 PNMs, we were going to try a totally unstructured COB recruitment.

I pledged in 1997 and we did have four NPC groups on campus. In fact, I was part of the last fully structured recruitment SFSU held in Spring. Unfortunately, the year after I pledged, the fourth group decided to go alum due to low interest in Greek Life and low numbers. In the past few years, we’ve had an overwhelming amount of PNMs and it’s getting to the point where we are evaluating whether or not to either raise house total or to add a new group. This Spring and next Fall will really help to see what direction Panhellenic is going to take.

chideltjen 01-27-2005 04:25 PM

I went searching on CSUH's website because that's my hometown. I know greek life isn't THAT huge there, but it's gotten better than a few years ago. (Their old greek advisor is now Sac State's.)

I'm assuming that they just do COB in the spring like we do. But then again, I don't know for sure... and the only two sorority websites they had didn't have any information on it. (But I found out that a girl I went to high school with became a Tri Sig.)

Ugghhh... it makes my head hurt (in a good way) just thinking about what direction we'll take if we keep getting such great rush numbers. I mean really, our umm.. facilities are sooooo great and spacious  that we can bearly fit chapters and PNMs comfortably (actually, we CAN'T fit them really) don't know what we're going to do. Maybe LadyJ and I should form a lobby group to turn the old High School of the Arts (which just got a new campus) into student org. offices, and more meeting space that we have in our union.

Ninja poodle, I don't think there will be any real "bid day" pre se. I know Phi Sig plans to have a week worth of events and not really extend any bids until the end of week, but there won't be any big thing out on the quad with balloons like fall or anything like that. We'll probably just take them to dinner that night.

Ooooh! Let's do it!!! I'm sure Maria will drive up from LA to help. ;)

There is definitely something that needs to be done about the space and availability of meeting rooms. It's ridiculous!

NinjaPoodle 01-27-2005 08:28 PM

Glitter and Lady,

Does SFSU own that property?

FSUZeta 01-27-2005 08:28 PM

thanks to all for explaining

i didn't realize that you had a formal recruitment in the fall, and i thought that your panhellenic was trying to do an unstructured recruitment in place of formal.

NinjaPoodle 01-27-2005 08:29 PM

Thanks for all the info. I think I will wait until the fall to do my project. That way I can plan further ahead.

We've done a formal rush in fall for the 4 years I've been involved with sorority at SFSU.
It's. of course not anything close to Vandy, or FSU, or even USC for that matter. We have three parties a night for 5 days, the only invitational round being pref.

According to my source in the Office of student leadership and programming, SFSU does own the land where the HS of the arts is/was, and I believe they are now trying to make plans about what to do with it.

Just a side note here. The CSU Board of Trustees voted on Wednesday 1/25/05 to change the name of California State University, Hayward to California State University, East Bay.
End of Hijack

Are you kidding ??? That makes me smile. Maybe they should change SFSU to Bay Area State University. :D

And as someone who is living in Hayward, I thought I would pass on the running joke... The school really will be called:

Cal State E. Bay

NinjaPoodle 01-28-2005 12:34 PM

from the website:

Cal State Hayward is now Cal State East Bay. We've changed our name to reflect our growing regional role and proud East Bay heritage. With two beautiful East Bay campuses — one in the Hayward Hills overlooking San Francisco Bay and the other in the Concord foothills of Mt. Diablo — plus a professional development center in the heart of dynamic downtown Oakland, we're fast becoming the San Francisco East Bay Area's public regional university of choice.

Shoot, you know that if I honestly thought that my driving up to SF would help, I'd be there tomorrow! Glitter and I have talked MANY times about space availability for rush. I think y'all are going to eventually have to bite the bullet and rent out Seven Hills for the entire week. That's the only place that I can think of that has enough room for everyone.

And I am just  about the name change from Hayward to East Bay. As if the CSU trustees have nothing more important to worry about...

We had Rigoberta Menchu Hall all week last Fall and as Glitter and Greeklawgirl know, it's one of the biggest spaces on campus. Even then, we had to crowd ladies on the first floor because the top two floors were taped off! The Union was under construction weeks before, but the University didn't have "clearance" to let people up there.

If we have money in the Panhellenic budget and we don't have any other plans for it, I say we propose that we use it to rent out Seven Hills for all thre houses if it's feasible. Maybe at least for one party during the week.

I've mentioned that idea to Glitter650 before. It would be easier on the chapters because they would be in one room the whole week and all the rooms are equally nice; it would be easier on the PNMs because they wouldn't be walking all over campus; and it would be easier on Panhellenic because can respond immediately if something happens.

Rent out 5 rooms; one for each chapter, one for the PNMs as a break room, and one for Panhellenic Executive Board and the Rho Chis. If money is a problem, combine the PNM room with the Panhellenic Room.

The other idea I came up with is to have each chapter pay for their room in Seven Hills, and--instead of raising the rush budget--have it be rush budget + the cost of room rental in order to keep things equal. The money for the Panhellenic/PNM room can come out of CPC's budget.

All of these ideas have been discussed with Panhel. We shall see what happens. Maybe when we storm the campus about what to do with the School of the Arts land, we should go flirt with the 7 hills people to get a discount. Mayb they would give us one if we all three used it for a whole week. I know as a chapter we've gone there and talked rental with them the price is NOT cheap.

Also since the moldy castle like tower building opened back up this fall, I've heard rumors about meeting space in the basement of the towers. Whatever happens I'm sure it will work out in eveyone's best interest.

I'm pretty sure right now Panhel's budget covers copying of fliers and rush booklets, purchasing of green books, and a small amount for awards night.

greeklawgirl 01-28-2005 05:32 PM

They reopened the moldy apartment building??? I thought they were going have to tear it down!

And Glitter--the idea about asking for a discount to rent out Seven Hills for the whole week is a GREAT one! I bet you anything they would be willing to bargain a little bit in order to have the rooms filled--its definitely better than having them sit empty! :)

rayray 01-31-2005 01:49 AM

As for Spring Recruitment at SFSU we are not sure if we are yet. We wont know for another week or so.
