to those NOT from Pennsylvania...
...is PA considered a "hick state" to those from other states??
I received a really nasty message from some chick on MySpace today, berating me for being a member of the "Laguna Beach" group. (I LOVE the show) Well, this girl was from Laguna Beach and went on about me being a loser for obsessing about people i dont know, yadda yadda yadda...whatever. I dont care about all that, but I was wondering about the last line of her message: "I should have known you were from a hick state like PA" That kind of baffled me because I live 15 mins from downtown Philly and go to school in the middle of Pittsburgh so Ive never seen any "hickness" Just curious |
there's no such thing as a hick state.
|
My father lived in Philly (near LaSalle U) and there ain't nothin hick about it.
Every state has it's rural/hick areas... |

There are hicks everywhere. I think areas that are more rural tend to be this way, and the urban and suburban ones are not. Of course people assume that Virginia is a hick state, but I live close to DC and there aren't many hicks around here.
As for PA, Mr. SSS and I stopped in a town a little south of Harrisburg for lunch one day, as we were headed to New York (yes, we went a different way than I-95) and it seemed like a hick town to me. I also work with a guy from Erie, PA and the way he describes it, it sounds like a hick town. But then I've been to other parts of PA that I would definitely not describe as such. It sounds like that girl from Laguna Beach is very ignorant. She should step outside her little world and get a clue. |
I'm from PA. I grew up near Harrisburg, went to school in Lock Haven, and now live in West Chester.
I'm proud of my state. If someone said it's a hick state, then they don't know anything about it. That girl from Laguna Beach needs to step outside the beach for a reality check. |

Just kidding. It's really true that there are "hicks" in every state, and that's particularly true because of the US society being so mobile. My late Mom used to love to describe herself as a Southern Ohio born "hillbilly." |

One of my best friends lives in Cincy. I love going to visit her there! My sister goes to Shawnee State, which is more southestern Ohio.

Hey. I don't think PA is a hick state. I used to feel this way about where I grew up (Orange County, NY). But you know what, living in NYC has taught me that where I am from is just more laid back, not necessarily "hickish". Actually living in an urban environment has made me appreciate my roots even more. I feel blessed to have grown up in such a sheltered environment because I see the latter every day down here. I think there are "hicks" where ever you go, and they can be in an urban setting, too. I think also that a "hick" is more of an ignorant person, and the person who said that to you is definately a hick of sorts in my eyes.
|
By the way, where I grew up is actually only 5 minutes from the PA border...........
|
hick state
i do not think of pennsylvania as a hick state.
|
I don't think of PA as a hick state.
But there are hick parts of every state I've been to, I mean I don't think of NY as a hick state at all, I was born there, spent summers there, but I've been to some really "hick" areas. Bobby, I agree, the areas you mentioned...Land of the Dirt People. |
I grew up in Lansdale. I was at Pitt my freshmen year and then transfered to Penn State. PA as a state is not hick. There may be certain areas that are, but there certain areas like that in every state. Anyways, I just wanted to say that I'm glad to see people defending my state.

OMG I was wondering this same thing today. I'm from Long Island, but I go to school in CT and know some PA people. I used to think of Philly whenever PA came to mind, but the PA people I know sound have that "country drawl" Like everybody's been saying, everywhere has its "hick" areas. As an NYC/LI girl, I thought that upstate NY was the hick area because there are mountains and farmland up there. However, people think Long Island people are hicks, as in ignorant and dumb (as quite a few are unfortunately). There is a "Hicksville" in Long Island.
|
It's interesting too, because in the area I am from (all woods, mountains and farmland), it is only 90 minutes from NYC and many people who move up there are actually from the NYC Metro-area which has caused the prices of homes and land to skyrocket. Also, many people I work with who are originally from down here moved up in that area after their kids were born and make the commute to work so the kids can have a better upbringing, better schools etc. and the area is still pretty cheap compared to Long Island.

Hell, even CA has Hick parts... (like almost the whole very center of it)

I'm Southern California born and bred. I have been to several locations in PA including Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Williamsport.
IMHO, Pennsylvania is not a hick state. .....Kelly :) |

I used to be on my university archery team. We made several trips to tournaments in Tulare and Visalia. Let me just say that those places were more "hick-like" than PA. .....Kelly :) |

Pennsylvaina is a hick state. Other than Philadelphia and Pittsburg, Pennsylvainia is West Virginia.

I live and was raised in Louisiana, where everyone does think we are a hick state(THE WATERBOY didn't help) but I've visited Philly, and some of the country side and it was not hick at all, and like that other thread, I do not believe any state is hick, they all just have certain spots

I agree PA is not a hick state.

Welllllll......I don't know about *that* Bobby, LOL. Are you trying to say that Anaheim isn't Orange County?? hehehehe funny. My aunt and uncle live up on Skyline Dr. in Santa Ana 'roundabaout the Tustin area. Believe me, that neighborhood is OC!! And it's north and east of the locations you mention! Methinks you all need to stop acting like the only OC is the one you see on TV. :p As someone who lived on the LA/OC county line for seven years (Long Beach), I can tell you with certainty that even places like Garden Grove fit in to an OC vibe more than most places in Los Angeles. So, quit being an OC snob! :D .....Kelly :) |
