Things that piss you off about MLK day

Let me start out by saying I'm not in bad mood or anything and I'm not racist, so dont take this the wrong way.

I dont understand why banks are closed, the post office is closed, schools are closed and many insurance companies are closed today for MLK day. I don't think its right that everything shuts down for this guy when we get nothing for George Washington's birthday or Lincoln's birthday and FDR's birthday. We don't even get anything for Kennedy's birthday. What has this guy actually done that gives him the honor of having half the nation close down for him? Yes, what he stood and fought for was a noble cause....but Abe Lincoln, who abolished slavery, doesnt even get a day of his own. Lincoln was killed just like MLK. I just think MLK day puts the good Dr. King above many great leaders who did a lot more for this country than MLK did. If its all about civil rights leadership and those who pioneered it, why not give Malcom X, Dr. King and Medgar Evans a day for all three and not just MLK day? When you go to an all black neighborhood you dont find a Malcom Blvd or Evans drive, but you always see a road called MLK. If I was colored I'd be furious. What are some of your thoughts?

Perhaps you've heard of a holiday called President's Day?

Yea, but half the nation doesnt shut down for it.

ZTAngel 01-17-2005 10:20 AM

FYI, Lincoln's and Washington's birthday are a National holiday. Since their birthdays are so close in date, we celebrate it on just one day - President's Day.

I think you just opened a can of whoop ass. You have a valid question that is now going to be ignored because your post reeks of racism (for starters the ghetto street comment and the "colored" people comment).

ETA: My work shuts down for President's Day and that's good enough for me!!!! :D

Yes, they do. It's a Federal holiday. The banks close. Schools close. Private businesses can choose to close or stay open, just as they can on MLK day.

Munchkin03 01-17-2005 10:22 AM

I don't have school on President's Day, either. Banks are closed, and I can't go to the post office.

So, pray tell...what is the problem here?

Its not racist. And I never remembered school being closed for president's day. The mall is still open on president's day but not on MLK day. Should I edit the post?

I never had president's day off at school. Never.

Palm Beach County never had off for President's Day? Are you sure? It's a Federal holiday which would mean that schools should have it off. Broward County had off for both MLK Day and President's Day.

UCF had off for just MLK Day.

And, yes, you should edit your post (such as the ghetto comment and the colored people comment).

Could it be that Lincoln is white and there are already too many "white" holidays? Or could it be that a lot of colored people feel they deserve a day of their own and decided who better to claim a holiday for than MLK? If many colored people want a holiday, why not give them Kwanza? I just think MLK day puts the good Dr. King above many great leaders who did a lot more for this country than MLK did. Ah crap. The malls are closed today? I'm out of some makeup and was planning on running over there on my lunch break.

ETA: My work isn't closed for either President's Day or MLK Day, so we go from New Year's until Good Friday w/o a day off. :( I remember in college, we had off for MLK Day but not for President's Day.

did you have February and April vacation or March vacation?

if you had February/April vacation then the first day of February vacation was president's day, so you had off for it but just didn't realize it was a holiday.

that's how my school was.

I'm furious that there is a bar in Pittsburgh (those Pgh GC'rs, it's the one on Carson st. in South Side with the midget (Casey's I believe)) that flys a Confederate Flag outside on MLK day.

Never heard that they did that. I'd think it would be a bigger deal? Have you seen it in person or just heard rumor of it?

Freedom of speech I guess....

XOMichelle 01-17-2005 12:53 PM

My company cares not to honor MLK.

So, I am at work and everyone else is skiing. :-(

Private schools (with no govt. funding) can do whatever they please.

aephi alum 01-17-2005 01:03 PM

The only thing about MLK Day that pisses me off, is that I don't get the day off work. I do get Presidents' Day, however...

MLK was a great man and deserves to have a day set aside in his honor. So "half the nation shuts down". You'll get your mail tomorrow.

Carnation, pass the popcorn, please...

chideltjen 01-17-2005 01:04 PM

I'm working today.

I don't think I get another holiday off until Memorial day. Though I may be getting time-and-a-half.

Since Sac State has a 6 week winter break, we would often observe all federal holidays during that time and then actually go to school on President's Day and such. But right now it's still winter break, so the students don't have school for MLK Day anyway.

ADPiShannan 01-17-2005 01:41 PM

I get MLK day off but for some reason no Presidents Day.

My friend Mike called me last year and said "hey come meet me on the south....OH WTF! these idiots have a confederate flag outside of their bar!"

preciousjeni 01-17-2005 02:24 PM

"Things that piss me off about MLK day" are:

(For those who have the day off)
1) More people don't use the time to give back to the community.
2) More people don't use the time to learn about MLK, Jr. and other great leaders.

Chicken wings and beer for me, as I break out my beach chair to relax for the entertainment.

Phasad1913 01-17-2005 02:34 PM

I don't think there will be all this entertainment you all are hoping for. I know I personally don't plan on dignifying this person with any long drawn out response and I don't think many other black people in GC will either. We deal with insensitivies like this everyday in REAL life so I could care less what this person thinks. You all have fun.

-And I don't think they should edit the colored comment. You all can see for yourselves the type of crap floating around in the minds of our peers and others in the year 2005.

Enjoy Dr. King's holiday.

33girl 01-17-2005 02:34 PM

No mail = no more work coming for me in the mail. so I'm happy.

I get President's Day off, incidentally.

The malls in WI are all open today.

CarolinaDG 01-17-2005 03:09 PM

I have the day off today! The only other holiday I have off is Chrismas Day! (Then again, it probably has more to do with the fact that we're closed every Monday)

I'm pretty pissed because I was planning on doing my taxes today and the irs won't update their e-file site until tomorrow and the libraries and post offices are closed so I can't get a booklet.

Otherwise, I wish we'd have more holidays in a year (particularly if they were paid holidays at work). I'm personally not going to bitch and moan because I had MLK day off in school (though we did day of service, so I didn't really have it off because I was doing community service). In fact, I wish we'd have MORE holidays. How about we have a different day for ALL different presidents and anyone who has ever contributed to the community. Mother Theresa day? I'd go for it.

The fact of the matter is, this holiday may not be important to you but it's important to someone else. I'm Christian, so Hannukuh may not be important to me, but that doesn't mean I don't respect the fact that there are plenty of people in the world who are Jewish and DO find it important.

ADPiZXalum 01-17-2005 03:13 PM

What makes ME mad today: I'm a teacher and therefore there is no school today, but MY BUTT has to be here for inservice.

PM_Mama00 01-17-2005 03:19 PM

I'm all for honoring people who have given great contributions to make our country a better place.

But, I've never had President's Day off. Never had Christopher Columbus day off, and as an Italian you can see that makes me super duper happy.

I was gona join a bunch of my sisters with our school to do service projects around the city, but unfortunately I get to spend my day off sick.

Hey, in the Chicago area, schools get a day off for Casmir Pulaski (a Polish-American Revolutionary War hero).

sugar and spice 01-17-2005 03:51 PM

I don't think I ever got president's day off of school either.

But I don't think that's particularly . . . uh, reverse-racist? Racism is based off which historical figures' birthdays give us a day off of school and work? Come on now.

And PM_Mama, let's not even get started on Christopher Columbus day. Why that guy even has a day is beyond me.

Yea, Phyllis, he wasnt even the one who really discovered the New World in the first place. It was the Vikings.

Yea, but thats my point....you dont see half the nation shutting down for Hannukuh. If anything, half of HollyWood would close for Hannukuh and lil'pockets of New York City. Its not that I dont respect the holiday for people, but why give one day to one man when he's not the only one who did the job? And not just that but also having a street named after him in almost every hood. Its kind of a disgrace to Dr. King himself. Have you ever been on MLK in Atlanta? Or Tampa? Or Jacksonville? The street is always full of crackheads, tricks, drug dealers in just about every city you have a MLK blvd or drive.

In Hawaii we celebrate King Kamehameha Day in June and Prince Kuhio Day in March.

A couple of years ago, the state voted to get rid of observing Columbus/Discoverer's Day in October as a state holiday so that we could observe MLK Day in January. I think this holiday is a well deserved one, and people should take the time to learn more about the life of this man and what he did for our country.

Malls aren't closed today. They only close for Christmas, New Year's, and Thanksgiving.

Craig, yo'ure all alone with this one.

jhujenn 01-17-2005 04:31 PM

If you want all federal holidays off go to school in DC and then get a job there. At the college I attended we were off for Columbus Day. The malls aren't closed either.

You're generalizing.

The MLK Blvd. in Madison runs from the capitol building to the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed lakeside convention center. In between, it has a number of high-rent office buildings, a few city government buildings, and definitely no crackheads.

I can't imagine we're the ONLY city in the nation with a road named after King that isn't in "the hood."

To add to that....your job needs to be for the DC Public Schools -- we observe EVERYTHING and just added Emancipation Day (April 16)!

Georgetown didn't get veterans day off but I think we got everything else off, plus an Easter break in addition to SPring break.
