common things you never knew
Until I got to high school, I never knew what those Ped Xing signs were. Our cross country team had sweatshirts that said XC and I was always confused. Then I put two and two together and realized the X meant cross. I seriously used to be like, "what the hell is ped xing?"
Did anyone else think anything dumb like this? |

She sent me a mssg saying she was stuck in the snow yesterday. |
I have a friend who, at the age of 21, when we were on a road trip, asks out of nowhere, "What does 'Min 45' mean?"
After stifling the uncontrollable desire to laugh hysterically, I explain to her that on the interstates, you're supposed to drive at a minimum speed of 45 miles per hour, or that you can be ticketed. She, being a driver herself, could not believe that you could receive a ticket for not driving fast enough. This is also the girl who failed the praxis exam 4 times before deciding that she should change her major so she could graduate. She still wants to be a teacher. :) |
In 9th grade, someone asked me "What's the first note of an A major scale?".
The sad thing was that he played clarinet in the band for 4 years. |

One day I was in the drive through at Whataburger with one of my best friends my senior year of high school. Right by the window there was a sign that read, "Condiments available upon request." She lookd at me shocked and said, "they just hand those out here to anyone?!" I had to smack my forehead and laugh. Kristin, CONDIMENTS, like ketchup, mustard, etc. NOT CONDOMS!
|
I know I have said this somewhere else....When I was little, I used to think Marion Barry was two people. (Mary and Barry)
|
I just read all the stuff on DGqueen in the other thread.. I'm shocked. I hope this gets figured out cuz now I'm curious!

Up until maybe 3 years ago, I didn't know what a Pro-Bowler was. I didn't know much about football, needless to say. I was watching a game with Mr. SSS and the commentators said something about some dude being a pro-bowler. I said to Mr. SSS (who definitely laughed at me afterwards), "You mean this guy is a pro football player and a professional bowler?"
I've since learned a lot more about football and actually enjoy the sport now. |
I didn't know how to cook rice until I got to college.
How I lived 18 years in a Filipino household without ever cooking rice is beyond me. |
I didn't know that you couldn't put wax paper in the oven. I learned my lesson this weekend when I was trying to bake cookies. I didn't want them to stick to the cookie tray. :(

I was just about to post and say parchment paper works wonders. My roomie last year introduced it to me and I love, love, love it! I always keep a roll in my pantry. Its so much easier than scraping cookies off the bottom of the tray.
|
I used a cookie recipe last night that actually called for waxed paper under the cookies while baking. I had no problem with it!

On a related baking note: This wasn't me, but a lady at work the other day put her Burger King breakfast sandwich in the microwave to heat it up. The only problem is, she didn't take it out of the wrapper, which has ALUMINUM FOIL on it, and it caught fire. She totally didn't know she couldn't put it in the microwave. She survived, but I can't say as much for her Croissanwich. |
If you drive on the NJ Turnpike extension to the Holland Tunnel, you pass three huge oil towers labelled Oil, Heats, and Best. When I was a kid, I understood what oil was, and I understood that heats could be in the tower, but had never heard of Best. So I asked my dad one time when we passed and he said it was another fossil fuel - like oil.
I was 20 before I realized that the towers were a promotion - that Oil Heats Best. And in my defense, for the last ten years, we took an alternate route to the Holland Tunnel. |

I know that its like 5 minutes to hard boil an egg, 3 minutes to soft boil an egg . . . . but when do you put the egg in the water?
When it starts boiling? Or when you first put the water on the stove? |
Quote:
Just dumping a cold egg into boiling water usually cracks it which isn't a horrible thing, but I prefer uncracked eggs. :D |
Quote:
- Immerse the egg in a small saucepan of cold water. - Bring water to a boil over high heat. - As soon as the water bubbles, turn heat down so that water stays simmering. - Cover the saucepan and start timing. - For a soft-boiled egg, simmer for 5 minutes. For a hard-boiled egg, simmer for 12 minutes. - And believe it or not, the altitude at which you are cooking makes a difference! This timing is for a high altitude. A soft-boiled egg cooked at sea level will take a full 2 minutes less cooking time and a hard-boiled egg will take 3 minutes less. And, BTW, AAAAARGH at that cookbook for giving cooking times at altitude first. Usually, recipes are written for those at sea level, and directions for cooking at altitude are given as a sidebar. |
I never heard of the word plethera until I went to grad school in 2001.

true, but one of my friends was sitting with me at a dinner table and said "This person didn't know you can't microwave styrofoam!" and everyone laughed as if it was common knowledge. They said chemicals get all in your food and slowly poison you or something.

When I was little I used to love the Snuggle Fabric Softener commercials and absolutely adored the bear! My parents always did my laundry for me so when I came to college I was clueless. First trip to Target I found liquid Snuggle and was like, "Oh! they must make detergent now," so I bought it. A year and a half later I went shopping with my mother before coming back to Miami and remembered I needed more detergent..... I picked it up and my mom told me that I've been using fabric softener instead of detergent the whole time. Oops!!

When I was little, I didn't know that another name for rabbit is "hare". When I heard the story of "The Tortoise and the Hare", I thought is was "The Tortoise and the Hair". And in my mind, it was a race between a turtle and that red-haired monster from Looney Toons.

I never noticed that I was saying STEVE Madden instead of John Madden. It was just coming out. My husband and I have been together for four years and he just pointed that out a few months ago!
I have been saying it for years... Guess I had great shoes on the brain. |
Until I was in junior high, I thought Chicago was pronounced "Chick-a-go". I knew there was a placed named "Shigago", but didn't realize the two were one and the same.

This is dumb-and sort of gross- but about 3 years ago-at age 23-I found out that after guys pee, the don't wipe-they shake. I never knew that!! All my guy friends laughed at me when I found this out-but I guess that I thought since we girls wipe, doesn't everyone??
|
I thought of something else that I never knew and this makes me sound like the dumbest person in the world.
I just found out about 2 weeks ago that Alaska is connected to Canada and is not an island. I've seen an Alaska license plate only once but I was so confused how it got here overseas. My ex-boyfriend had to tell me it was connected to Canada on the northwest side. I felt so dumb. |
I'm just plain D U M B
Up till 2 years ago.....
I didn't know that Carrot Cake actually had carrots in it. I just thought it was named that because of the icing on top that was shaped like carrots... I'm not a fan of Carrot Cake, so maybe that could be my excuse? |
