Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Is anyone watching tonight's show?

It features the Anderson family in South Central Los Angeles. Rodney Anderson, college basketball student, shot 4 times by a gang member and it was mistaken identity. He is paralyzed.

Seeing the home they have lived in for the last 4 years is very very sad. :( There is about 7 or 8 people living in this house with one bathroom that has no sink.

Yes, I have already shed my tears.

Dionysus 01-16-2005 08:18 PM

Oooh thanks for reminding folks. I'll tune in now...

Proverbs31 01-16-2005 08:42 PM

Hmmm, doesn't seem like they'll complete TWO homes in 6 days, especially with the unexpected problems, but we shall see....

wannabeina 01-16-2005 08:59 PM

Tivo

I've got it recording on Tivo right now. I'm going to watch and I'll get back to you!:)

Thanks to tv.yahoo.com I knew last week they would not meet the 7 days, but they are doing so much for SUCH a deserving family. That original house was to be dayumed. :(

I love this show so much.

I cannot believe Tracey is in the freaking Bahamas.

Yay Rodney!

I am loving this episode, and I can't stop crying. That was so awesome that they retired Rodney's jersey. I hope that they give him a wheel-chair accessible vehicle, so that he can get out and attend some of the games in person. I can't wait to see how the 2 houses come out.

Say what you want about Ty Pennington getting on your nerves, but that man has a heart of pure gold when it comes to doing for these familes. All of the design team actually.

It sounds like they are going to make it so Rodney is more self-sufficient. At the beginning of the show, they mentioned how his sister Gloria helps him bathe everyday. I know that has to be bad for her back especially sleeping on a floor everyday with no mattress for about 4 years.

This show makes you really count all of your blessings.

Proverbs31 01-16-2005 09:42 PM

Oh my goodness, yes, this definitely has me counting my blessings. I lost it when Courtney said "I finally have a bed."

It sure does. To see someone so excited just to have a bed. I can't even imagine it.

I lost it once I heard the choir singing.

My brother called so I missed them playing the tape of the 911 call.

Ty really outdid himself tonight with the engagement ring AND the wedding!! :D

wannabeina 01-16-2005 11:05 PM

Just finished watching

I am so thankful for all that I have! I am also thankful for strong people like Rodney and his family. Everytime I watch this show I cry and my heart aches to do more for the community.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking 8 days to build 2 houses!
I am so thankful...
so very, very thankful:)

Ten/Four 01-16-2005 11:30 PM

I'm sorry I missed this episode. Normally I watch, but was busy. There's not a time I watch EM:HE and didn't cry.

CrimsonTide4 01-17-2005 01:17 AM

When Ty gave them the wedding, I was crying even more. :D I am so happy for Rodney and Monique.

NiaX 01-17-2005 05:47 AM

A wedding??? I had to leave while they were showing them their new house, so I was able to see the ring that was given. But they actually got married on the SPOT! Oh my goodness....they really did out do themselves! WOW!

Fans of Reality TV.com

I got this from FORT:

In March 2000, Rodney Anderson of South Central Los Angeles was on his way to the NBA and a degree in social work, thanks to a full basketball scholarship from California State University at Fullerton (CSUF). On a rare day off from practice, he came home to have dinner with his family. Afterwards, he went for a walk -- the last time he would do so. Gang members approached Rodney and shot him in the back, thinking he was a rival gang member, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down, with little movement in his arms.

Since the accident, it has been a constant struggle for Rodney and his family. His mother, Martha, had to quit her job and his sister, Glenda, moved into the small, dilapidated house in order to care for Rodney, who is now 22 years old. A year to the day of Rodney's accident, his father, Joe, was involved in a car accident and had to have three toes amputated. During his recovery period, the family was in dire financial need.

With assistance from the state of California and former assemblyman Carl Washington, a contractor was hired to begin work on the Anderson home to make it wheelchair-accessible for Rodney. But the contractor never returned to complete the job and left were gaping holes where there should have been walls, leaving the house exposed to the elements and making it almost completely uninhabitable.

Rodney was restricted to two rooms in the house, which included the dining room that had been converted into his bedroom. The three-bedroom, one-bath house, which was built in 1911 and is 1424 sq. feet, was in such bad shape that the living room ceiling was on the verge of collapsing and the floorboards couldn't bear the weight of Rodney's wheelchair.

Last year, Rodney proposed to Monique Allen, his girlfriend for the past five years. Since Rodney's accident, they haven't been able to be alone much and they miss taking long walks on the beach.

Rodney is an honor student at CSUF and attends classes and basketball games in a wheelchair. While Rodney and his fiancee Monique, along with his parents, sister Glenda and her three children, Mellone, 19, Louis, 16 and 12-year-old Cordney, went on vacation to the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, CSUF held a special campus event where Rodney's basketball number was retired.

I will definitely watch How'd They Do That tonight!

skywalker20_99 01-17-2005 10:41 AM

This is one of the few shows that restores my faith in human kindness. I cried so much during the show. For some reason, the reaction of Rodney's father really got to me. The entire family seemed like to be such good, deserving people. I really hope the two younger boys continue to pursue their dreams in science and law.

The on-the-spot wedding was great! Rodney's bride Monique was absolutely beautiful. I was so happy for them, especially when they gave them $50,000! Maybe they can use that to purchase a wheelchair accessible vehicle for Rodney. Even better, maybe he and his new wife can continue to further their education.

I hope the same things -- either the car or education. They did not say if Monique was in school or not.

I LOVE that show. I could not stop crying and the dad was making me cry more. It is just something about a black man crying, it touches my heart. I'm beyond happy for that family. The first time they didn't make it in 7 days was well worth it. I wish I had money to give to the show but I don't. Maybe I'll send them a card and tell them how they are warming the hearts of America and GC members.

** CT4 I know you were balling just as much as I was. The Lord is really going to bless Ty, it is well deserved.

nikki1920 01-18-2005 10:29 AM

Everytime I watch that show, I bawl like a baby. My mom was laughing at me until she saw the renovations, then she was crying too. :) YAY for the law and science kids!! I loved the Johnnie Cochran room!! I LOVED the parent's master suite!!! I lost it when I saw Rodney and Monique's house, did you see his face when the door opened!!?

It tore at my heart when the Dad started crying too, he was so happy, you could tell. Ty Pennington and the rest of the EM:HE crew are going to be blessed repeatedly for doing things like this for such deserving families.

When they pulled out the check for $50,000, I was just too through. I was thanking God for them.. lol..

But irks me when he starts with the blowhorn thing!! lol :p

Ty Pennington undergoes his own extreme makeover

AKA4MJ 01-19-2005 12:56 PM

Hey all..

I just wanted to let everyone know how I was personally touched by this episode. My sister was their and so was all of the old neighborhood. I grew up with Rodney and his sisters and brothers and he is the baby of the family. Those familiar with South Central LA, the house is on 94th between Budlong AND Normandie. Whew! Those were the days...

But this family is very deserving and it couldn't have happen to someone more deserving. What the show didn't show was the new van that was customized just for them and all of the money they received. Which is good cause sadly their is still some haters out there. I was so excited to see the house that I grew up in. And it is good to know that we can rise above and out ofthe ghetto. For that street alone have produced lawyers, accountants, teachers and other professionals.

Thanks for telling us a more personal side. I know that Soror Deltabrat lives in the South Central area and was hoping she would drop in and give us more insight. But you'll do too. ;) :)
Tell Rodney his story touched a lot of people. I am glad to know they also got a van for the family. I really wish Rodney and his family all the best.

Can you tell us though what is the turnaround time of when the renovations were actually done and when it was aired on TV?

The house was NICE!! Mom's room was GREAT!! Though it is a little "old" for my taste, it was still classically beautiful. It almost looked like a "Laurie" room (Trading Spaces). She likes to use toile in her rooms.

If I could have a home with half the beauty that these homes have, I would be SOOOOO grateful! I can't wait to be a homeowner.... *sigh*

CrimsonTide4 02-13-2005 07:59 PM

2 Hour Ep tonight

It just came on. I cannot wait!!

CrimsonTide4 03-06-2005 10:56 AM

TTT

Tonight is the ep where they do the makeover for the family with SEXtuplets -- Black family.

CrimsonTide4 03-06-2005 10:23 PM

 Tell me they are building at least 2 bedrooms for the sextuplets. They will not be able to share a room for forever.

ETA: COol at the sliding wall for the kids' room.

GOOD JOB, EMHE!! :D

Neosoulchild 03-06-2005 11:55 PM

I was thinking the same thing, but it turned out nice. :)

Steeltrap 03-07-2005 02:41 AM

Great entertainment

I couldn't stop laughing and smiling. The Harris babypeople were the cutest little things. And I know the parents must be relieved to have that beautiful home.

A Web site on them:

I cannot watch this show, it makes me cry! I did see the episode with the Harper family in Atl. I was a mess!!! Little Mister was so adorable.

strivingsf 03-07-2005 12:09 PM

I liked the circus room for the little ones, this family was well deserved.

Re: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

I saw this episode. I was crying during the entire episode. But that's not really a big deal since I cry during *every* Home Edition episode.
I also cried last week during Top Model and The Road to Stardom. :)
