So sad. He was a truly gifted and left behind a wonderful legacy.

ETA: I didn't realize that today was the anniversary of his death. It's weird. I've been singing Donnie songs all day.

Props to the late Bro. Hathaway, a true music legend who had a tremendous voice. I'm bumping "A Song For You" in my CD rotation now.

Speak truth, my sistah!!!! I have the "live" album version as well as the album in which it was first released (album title escapes me now).

"A Song For You" is quite possibly in my top 10 allll time.....

*slight hijack--have you heard his daughter Lalah Hathaway's newest, Outrun the Sun?

Jill1228 01-14-2005 01:22 PM

Ain't that the truth, sistahfriend? His duets with Roberta Flack...OMG. And don't even get me started with my all time favorite Christmas song "This Christmas"...I could listen to that song ANY time of year.

The brotha was such a wonderful talent

I missed this thread yesterday...gonna put that CD in my player as soon as I leave for work today

Bro. Hathaway (A Son of Beta).

Hotep Brothers. Bro. RBL you are right on point about the musical genius Bro. Hathaway. I would enjoy some old school Beta Brothers who knew him being able to provide some insight about our brother.

I THINK the title of that Album was A Song For You-Live... See, you have a few years on me. When that was originally released, I was a child. However, I had older relatives and my father who enjoyed the music, hence my appreciation for the "old school".

Uhhhhhhhh, yeah. I have to get it. Her cover of Luther's Forever...For Always...For Love is in constant rotation locally. It's featured on her latest and the compilation Luther Tribute CD...I DO have that in my possession.

Lalah is the bomb. Her sister sings back-up for an artist. I want to say Stevie. If it's not Stevie, it's another legendary artist.

Do you have the CD she collaborated with Joe Sample. It features that song "When Your Life Was Low" :o OH. MY. WORD! GREAT MUSIC!

STOP. THE. DAYUM. PRESSES!

The Closer I Get to You- CLASSIC! I LUV IT! SIMPLY LUV IT!
I can remember as a child, in my grandmother's "club", the song playing. I would swing and sway to that song singing the words. AT that time, I would "call" the words. I didn't know what the song meant...I just knew the words. Simply beautiful!

. . .and how 'bout we got that and I haven't listened to it all the way through? :( Bad me!

One of my favorites with Donny and Roberta is the gospel song "Come Ye Disconsolate". It WILL bring tears to your eyes.

And don't even get me started with Roberta. I absolutely LOVE her voice - I think it's one like no other. But this is Donny's thread.

I also love "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know." I don't think anyone out today would do justice in remaking a Donny Hathaway song. You have to really "sang" to sing that slow and still sound good.

My all time favorite Donnie/Roberta duet is "You Are My Heaven".
I can listen to that song over and over and over again. :D

You are my love
You are my Heaven
You are my love
Make me sing la-di-da
You are my love
You are my Heaven
Darling, I won't let them take you away.

*singing theme from "Maude"*

I know I'm late on this, but I was singing the theme from the TV show "Maude" in rememberance of Mr. Hathaway.

*singing* "Lady Godiva was a freedom rider....."

RBL 09-29-2005 09:29 PM

I'm gonna bump this a little early(i would hate to forget this).........10/1/45 was the birthday of a legend..

RIP Bro. Donny Hathaway

BTW- If you havent heard his LIVE version of this song...you need to GET INTO IT

"To be young, gifted and black,
Oh what a lovely precious dream
To be young, gifted and black,
Open your heart to what I mean

In the whole world you know
There are billion boys and girls
Who are young, gifted and black,
And that’s a fact!

Young, gifted and black
We must begin to tell our young
There’s a world waiting for you
This is a quest that’s just begun

When you feel really low
Yeah, there’s a great truth you should know
When you’re young, gifted and black
Your soul’s intact

Young, gifted and black
How I long to know the truth
There are times when I look back
And I am haunted by my youth

Oh but my joy of today
Is that we can all be proud to say
To be young, gifted and black
Is where it’s at"
