Ask a SF . . . Random questions
SORORS (i.e., SORORS OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC.),
My Soror Moderator started a thread for SF's to question us; I would like to start a similar thread for us to question them. So, my SORORS, do you have any questions that you would like to ask our Sisterfriends? Disclaimer: The rules are the same, SFs, you don't have to answer anything you don't wish to respond to. No one is forcing you, no one is going to look down on you if you don't answer nor for how you answer, there are no tricks, no shadiness, no underhandedness, just questions. None of your answers will have any impact on whether or not you become a member of the organization. The sorors here at GC have no control over such a thing, nor do we claim to. Sorors, should I or my Soror MIC deem your questions and/or comments to be inappropriate, your posts will be edited or deleted. |
gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrllllll..we are >>>here<<<
My questions: Why do SFs ask "bold" questions on the internet, but won't DARE ask a Soror in person? Why do SOME SFs ask some of the most ridiculous questions without searching for the answer, if a answer exists? Why do SFs 'flip flop' orgs they are so-called interested in? Why do SFs "claim" they want to be a member of XYZ, then become a member and DON'T DO JACK? Is it worth thousands of dollars to become a member of XYZ, when you can do community service for free? Do you really want to become a member of an organization for the RIGHT reasons, or are you trying to get a man? get attention? Why is it that SOME SFs purport to know everything there is to know about greekdom, but have yet to become a member? Why put on a facade to try to get sponsorship? Why look to an organization to define who you are? Why not have a sense of self BEFORE you join? Why is the sky blue? Why are there tsunamis? LMAO! Lemme stop! :p |

I have some questions though... Why do some SF get the impression that membership is OWED to them? Why do some SF don't feel like they have to work towards the goal that is Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.? SFs, do you feel like b/c of the easy access to memberfriends via the internet that there is less motivation to do your own research? GC is pretty good with not attracting nutballs worthy of restraining orders but I have been members of other sisterfriend/soror sites & the prevelant attitude is that there is no humility i.e arguing with and or trying to cuss out a member of the organization you wish to be a part of. Why do you think that is? I'm sure I'll be back with more... |

#2 Some SF's are lazy. It's that simple. Or they don't know any better. Not everyone has the same home training, work ethic or common sense. #3 Do you mean go from ABC to DEF org? There are a lot of different reasons for that happening. My take is that for whatever reason, SF decided that ABC org is not for her. Speaking from an older SF perspective, I am certainly not the same girl I was back in UG, than I am now. My views, experiences, & expectations have all changed. Would it be such a stretch to think that maybe my interests would change also? But I do know that SF's change for reasons that are less than stellar, (denied membership, hookups in other orgs, etc) #4. Interesting...b/c at some point in time ALL members of ABC org were SF's. A member would have to answer that question. #5 No...but I would wager that SF's aren't trying to get in ABC org for the community service activities. You are right, I do that for free. #6 What are the RIGHT reasons? Isn't that a subjective question? While we may all crinkle noses at "trying to get a man", or "going to the party"(obviously not the correct response)...what becomes the right answer? As you already stated, community service is a mute point. Sisterhood is a major component that most SF's are probably looking for. So what is beyond or the right reason? #7 Lack of opportunity, lack of resources, less than a majority vote? :) #8 Facade?? Some SF's are fake. They don't know how to be themselves. There is nothing wrong with having your A-game on in the presence of...but coming completely out of character...they know that if they are really who they are...(uncouth, dramafied...hot mess)...they will be DENIED. #9 These SF's are not mature enough. Adult/Womanhood does not necessarily happen at 18 or 21. If SF's are trying to find themselves, they still won't find it in an org. That comes from inside. You are a mess before, and u still gonna be a mess in your letters. |
Soror AKA2D 's post
LMAO! And here I was thinking where to begin..........
I'll edit with my questions later. |
Discretion
Why do some SFs choose not to use it? In regards to flip-flopping between orgs, if you never said anything, then no one would ever know that you changed your mind. So, SFs, I ask you, how do you view discretion and what does it mean to you? What do you think it means to the organization?
If you were a legacy, would you tell? If your blood sister was an AKA perp would you tell or would you let my Sorors think she was real? Have you ever thought about perping? What made you decide against it? In your own words, what is the difference between a necessity and a luxury? If you have to ask what the "right" reason is for joining an organization, should you even be thinking about joining? What, if any, is the advantage of doing community service in a group as opposed to doing it alone? |
The same SF can answer this question as well, 'cause I could use some clarification:
If you have always wanted Sorority ABC and instead go to Sorority XYZ, what makes Sorority ABC "not right" for you anymore? What are you looking for in any Sorority? Knowing what you know about your organization of choice, what would make you a "fit"? Okay, let's say you were chosen for the organization that you want, but another person that you really don't like at all was also chosen. How do you handle that? What are your favorite colors? (I have a reason for asking this seemingly crazy question.) |
Why do SOME SFs say they want to join XYZ because of the colors?
Why do some SFs choose XYZ org ONLY because their boyfriend/manfriend is a member of DEF? What happens if you and your boy/manfriend breakup? Then what? Why is it that SOME SFs have their own agenda? Why not establish SF Social and Pleasure Aid Club? Why am I not being sisterly to my sorors as I continue to ask MORE questions? :p ;) :D |
Quote:
To answer your other question about being selected with someone I don't like...what can I do about it? The org saw something in her that apparently I can't or don't see. I would have to be polite, but we don't have to be friends. Business is business. Handle it. |
Quote:
Do you (not just coco, collective you) think that Alpha Kappa Alpha should discontinue membership at the undergraduate level so that we can make sure we are taking women who KNOW what they want? 1cococookie, what, exactly, is "the sorority option?" Does that mean choosing whether or not to join a sorority as opposed to choosing whether or not to join ABC? What ARE the national programs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.? How have they differed Through the Years? What, in your honest opinion, is the purpose of a sorority? Now, how does it relate to the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha? Are they aligned? And do you believe that they HAVE to be aligned in order for you to join the organization? |
My questions:
Why do SFs ask "bold" questions on the internet, but won't DARE ask a Soror in person? Supposed anonymity. Why do SOME SFs ask some of the most ridiculous questions without searching for the answer, if a answer exists? Same answer as the above question. On the internet, people consider themselves faceless. Why do SFs 'flip flop' orgs they are so-called interested in? I will never understand this. Because BLGO are supposed to be lifetime commitments, I would think you would do everything within your power to make sure you are choosing the best fit. To me, from an interest perspective, it is like a marriage (lifetime commitment). I would never go into marriage unsure, so I certainly wouldn't pledge to work for an organization for life if I was unsure. I think those who choose this option just want to belong. I know people who have done this. And once they finally got into an organization, they did NO work for it. Why do SFs "claim" they want to be a member of XYZ, then become a member and DON'T DO JACK? They wanted to join to belong to something, anything. Is it worth thousands of dollars to become a member of XYZ, when you can do community service for free? No, but it is worth a thousand dollars to keep something you believe in stable and growing. If you donate to certain charities, a portion of your donation goes to the organization to cover administrative costs. Do you really want to become a member of an organization for the RIGHT reasons, or are you trying to get a man? get attention? Yes, for the right reason. Just being a member of any group will not get you a man or the type of attention that you necessarily want. I look for nothing to complete me because I am whole. However, I am drawn to things and people that compliment my dreams, goals, beliefs and values. Why is it that SOME SFs purport to know everything there is to know about greekdom, but have yet to become a member? This, I do not know. One cannot know everything from the outside looking in. And even once you are in the Greek life, I would assume (and I know I shouldn't assume) there is a learning curve. Why put on a facade to try to get sponsorship? I can't speak for everyone, but I can speak for the sisterfriends that I know...it is never a facade. We simply put our best foot forward, just as we would on a job interview. Why look to an organization to define who you are? Why not have a sense of self BEFORE you join? I hope interests have a true sense of self. I think this one is a case by case basis Why is the sky blue? A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight. Why are there tsunamis? Tsunamis can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Tectonic earthquakes are a particular kind of earthquake that are associated with the earth's crustal deformation; when these earthquakes occur beneath the sea, the water above the deformed area is displaced from its equilibrium position. Waves are formed as the displaced water mass, which acts under the influence of gravity, attempts to regain its equilibrium. When large areas of the sea floor elevate or subside, a tsunami can be created. The last 2 answers were found via www.ask.com. I already knew the blue sky answer, but I wanted to know the other for myself. |
Why is it that some SF's feel that XYZ Sorority Inc. wasn't a good fit for them in undergrad and go so far as to belittle XYZ Sorority, Inc... but will break there neck for sponsorship on the graduate level for XYZ Sorority, Inc?
Why is it that some SF's are so bold as to tell me WHEN they are going to become a member of XYZ Sorority, Inc? I'll stop now because the rest of the questions I want to ask will probably get deleted ;) That is all....:D |

Over the Internet there is a certain since of anonymity (that is questionable) which led some SFs to get keyboard courage. Why do SOME SFs ask some of the most ridiculous questions without searching for the answer, if a answer exists? As mentioned before some are lazy and want the straightforward answer instead of reading and researching. Why do SFs 'flip flop' orgs they are so-called interested in? I have no idea. Why do SFs "claim" they want to be a member of XYZ, then become a member and DON'T DO JACK? Once again, I have no idea. Is it worth thousands of dollars to become a member of XYZ, when you can do community service for free? Yes, community service is free and my participation is deemed necessary. Business is business and money is needed for growth Do you really want to become a member of an organization for the RIGHT reasons, or are you trying to get a man? get attention? In my heart, soul and mind for the RIGHT reasons and do not involve men or attention. Why is it that SOME SFs purport to know everything there is to know about greekdom, but have yet to become a member? I have no idea. You learn something new everyday regardless of origin. Why put on a facade to try to get sponsorship? If I can’t be true to myself how then could I be true to a sponsor and the organization? To me it is not worth it however, there are some issues such as home training and discretion that should be used. Why look to an organization to define who you are? Why not have a sense of self BEFORE you join? I myself am not looking for an organization to define me and with age found that sense of self led to my choice. Why is the sky blue? I am not sure exactly but if I remember correctly from class the light passing through the air hits tiny particles such as pollen and dust reflecting the bluish color. Why are there tsunamis? Tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes. |

Volume II
Why do some SFs choose not to use it? In regards to flip-flopping between orgs, if you never said anything, then no one would ever know that you changed your mind. So, SFs, I ask you, how do you view discretion and what does it mean to you? What do you think it means to the organization?
I am assuming "flip-flopping" means people who have actually submitted at a formal rush, been turned down, and then try another organization. To me discretion means that some people are on a need to know basis and there are just some things they don't need to know. Being discreet means being mindful of the consequences or your actions and adhering to a code of modesty and silence in terms of your interest. If you were a legacy, would you tell? I am not a legacy, so I am not sure. If your blood sister was an AKA perp would you tell or would you let my Sorors think she was real? I would hope that her perpertrating would not be used against me later, cuz I would have to tell. And I would have a long talk with my sister about why she feels the need to pretend to be something she is not. Have you ever thought about perping? What made you decide against it? I have never thought about it. Everything that goes on in the dark eventually comes to light. Secondly, I want it for real and the right way, not for pretend. Perping only reaps the benefits of wearing 'nalia and doing a call. If that were my only reason for being interested, I guess I can see how that could lead to perping. Personally, I want more than that. In your own words, what is the difference between a necessity and a luxury? Necessity : food, clothing, shelter, water, education (for me personally) Luxury: anything else God sees fit to bless you with If you have to ask what the "right" reason is for joining an organization, should you even be thinking about joining? No, ma'am. What, if any, is the advantage of doing community service in a group as opposed to doing it alone? One person can only do so much. Reaching a larger group of people, affecting change on a greater scale, and a shoulder to lean on when you feel weary are some of the advantages I can think of off the top of my head. |

What is your full name and what school do you go to?
If you could choose your own linesisters would you? What would be your criteria? If you knew FOR CERTAIN that you would NEVER have the opportunity to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, would you go ahead and seek membership elsewhere? What role, if any, have greek stereotypes played in your interest/selection of a sorority? If you knew FOR CERTAIN that in order to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha you would HAVE TO spend an extra year in undergrad would you submit an application and stay in school that extra year or continue your studies/graduate on time and hope to be invited to a graduate chapter? Why or Why not? If your mother, for whatever reasons, forbade you to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha would you do it anyway (assume that her opinion CANNOT be changed)? Why or Why not? *more questions/hypos forthcoming* |

Why do SFs ask "bold" questions on the internet, but won't DARE ask a Soror in person?
Well, considering that off the bat some people have the suspicion that they might get slammed, they may rather just take their chances with the internet. They are just playing the odds. Heads: Maybe they will luck up and get their question answered or Tails: If they get slammed, they can just blow it off, pretend it never happened, and assume a new "internet identity." Why do SOME SFs ask some of the most ridiculous questions without searching for the answer, if a answer exists? That would be too easy.... Why do SFs 'flip flop' orgs they are so-called interested in? Flip-floppers really aren't interested in any org. They just want to be a part of something. Why do SFs "claim" they want to be a member of XYZ, then become a member and DON'T DO JACK? They want the attention or "glamour" that comes with just being able to utter the words "I'm an XYZ," wearing the para, strolling/struting, etc. Is it worth thousands of dollars to become a member of XYZ, when you can do community service for free? Although one can do community service for free, to some, the other incentives of being a member of XYZ may be priceless. Do you really want to become a member of an organization for the RIGHT reasons, or are you trying to get a man? get attention? The right reasons... Why is it that SOME SFs purport to know everything there is to know about greekdom, but have yet to become a member? They don't want to admit their shortcomings. Or maybe they have watched too many movies and TV shows that feature greeklife and feel that they have it under control. Why put on a facade to try to get sponsorship? Some people KNOW that there is NO other way for them to reach their goal. Like Chris Rock said in "Bigger and Blacker," that's their "representative." Why look to an organization to define who you are? Why not have a sense of self BEFORE you join? Unfortunately, some people don't have a sense of self before joining. While I don't think that a person should be defined by the organization, joining an org. may help to lead people in the right direction to becoming the person they need/desire/want to be. Why do some SF get the impression that membership is OWED to them? Sometimes, some people are used to things being given to them instead of being earned. Why do some SF don't feel like they have to work towards the goal that is Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.? Some people have romanticized views that they just have to show up to Rush, do a few activities, and that's all it takes. They have no idea. SFs, do you feel like b/c of the easy access to memberfriends via the internet that there is less motivation to do your own research? Not at all. Though the internet has made research a lot easier, when it gets down to it, hardly any of the stuff on the 'net matters. It's what you can do independently without all this fancy technology that matters. GC is pretty good with not attracting nutballs worthy of restraining orders but I have been members of other sisterfriend/soror sites & the prevelant attitude is that there is no humility i.e arguing with and or trying to cuss out a member of the organization you wish to be a part of. Why do you think that is? NO NONSENSE MODERATORS!!! :D Why do some SFs choose not to use it? In regards to flip-flopping between orgs, if you never said anything, then no one would ever know that you changed your mind. So, SFs, I ask you, how do you view discretion and what does it mean to you? What do you think it means to the organization? Some SFs just don't know better. I think that some Sfs get excited to find a "community" where people have a common interest and get overzealous. That causes them to trip. With time, I think most SFs learn the ropes. Discretion is keeping private things private and that's that. Loose lips sink ships. Discretion to can literally be a matter of life or death to an organization. If you were a legacy, would you tell? Yes. If your blood sister was an AKA perp would you tell or would you let my Sorors think she was real? I would tell. Have you ever thought about perping? What made you decide against it? NEVER considered it. In your own words, what is the difference between a necessity and a luxury? A necessity is something that is needed to maintain (i.e. food, shelter, electricity, water). A luxury is something that I would like, but can continue to live without--meaning, I won't die if I never have one in life If you have to ask what the "right" reason is for joining an organization, should you even be thinking about joining? No. What, if any, is the advantage of doing community service in a group as opposed to doing it alone? Two heads are better than one, so to speak. The more manpower, the better. However, some people may be a little too "chicken" to do things alone. So, if it takes rounding up some of your girls to get you off your butt and go out to feed the homeless, go for it. |
Part Deux
Knowing what you know about your organization of choice, what would make you a "fit"?
The fact that I am and can be myself. I feel that I have qualities that can make me useful/valuable to my org. of choice. Okay, let's say you were chosen for the organization that you want, but another person that you really don't like at all was also chosen. How do you handle that? I would get over it. What are your favorite colors? (I have a reason for asking this seemingly crazy question.) In all honesty, I like most colors, but pink and black are at the top of the list. Why do SOME SFs say they want to join XYZ because of the colors? They are crazy. Why do some SFs choose XYZ org ONLY because their boyfriend/manfriend is a member of DEF? What happens if you and your boy/manfriend breakup? Then what? They are still crazy... and single. Why is it that SOME SFs have their own agenda? Why not establish SF Social and Pleasure Aid Club? SF SA&P? That's funny. Reminds me to get my ticket for the Zulu ball.... :D |
Do you all know SF that there is a difference between an interest and a prospective?
If your mother is a member of XYZ, then how come she is unable to get all the stuff you need to do your research if she's still alive--or just because she's a "silver star" does she think you ought to skate into her sorority? How come the explicit written down on paper parts of the intake process seem extremely unclear to you all, especially after all the information has been presented at Rush? How come the application process so scary to you all? Are you all afraid of being rejected? And why? How come some of you all demand to be questioned with a harsh tone and expect us to be "gracious" afterward? We have feelings too and we work hard... Just asking... |
Why if your school's chapter of XYZ is no longer on campus (suspended/expelled/never existed), why do you think you can harass the Graduate Advisor of another school in the same city? Why ask if you can "cross-"pledge""? IF you researched the organization, you would KNOW if it is possible to do. Then, you would know that "pledging" is not a recognized activity. Also, why not check with the school you attend for information? Or, check with the other university to determine what it's guidelines are regarding this matter?
Why do SFs still use the term pledge? Why do AKA SFs ignore the anti-hazing policy? Do you know what the AKA anti-hazing policy includes? (if so, don't post...only reflect and digest the info and make it applicable to your lives) |

I guess the criteria would be: how they present themselves (how they come to events etc.); how they speak or if they speak at all at events; I dont know many people but if I did I would look at what orgs they are in and what their goals are after college; being friendly but not talking to all the other interests mostly members and then leaving a few minutes after the event is over. I have observed a few other ladies at events that just based on how they act at events I would choose also but I have never conversed with them or seen them arround campus so I really don;t know how they really are. I keep to myself so I guess I like other people that are naturally discrete. Quote:

Volume III
Why do SFs still use the term pledge?
I used the term pledge in a previous post. However, by pledge I meant to devote yourself. If you could choose your own linesisters would you? What would be your criteria? If granted the opportunity, no I would not want to choose my own linesisters. I would want to be linesisters with the women that the members chose to be my linesisters. If you knew FOR CERTAIN that you would NEVER have the opportunity to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, would you go ahead and seek membership elsewhere? No, then it was just not meant to be. It was not in His plan. What role, if any, have greek stereotypes played in your interest/selection of a sorority? The only stereotype that has played into my interest is the fact that the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are trailblazers. I would graduate because I went to school for an education not to become a member of a sorority. If your mother, for whatever reasons, forbade you to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha would you do it anyway (assume that her opinion CANNOT be changed)? Why or Why not? This one is hard for me because my mother would never forbid me to do anything. She trusts my judgement. I would have to say yes, I would do it anyway, and she would have to get over it. 1. My mother is my BEST friend so we could work through it 2. I am my own person and I have to live my life as I see fit and pursue MY dreams. I cannot live someone else's life and be happy. |

Are you currently involved in other organizations? If so how many? Is your interest in AKA genuine or is it just another organization to add to your resume?
Do you think you can remain a committed member to those you are already involved in and maintain membership in AKA if you are chosen? Do you have the funds to support all? Do you have the time to support all? What are you actively doing to obtain membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha? If you are a grad level interest, do you find that attending grad events are expensive? If so, how do you expect to pay dues? For any contacts made with members, is it genuine (considering these will be the people you may be working with) or is it just a means to an end (I've got letters)? Have you done a self-assessment to determine are you really up to par? Do you find that your peers (those who are interest like yourself) are up to par? If an AKA chapter on your campus holds programs and community service events and you don't attend, how do you expect to show interest? How do you expect the members to even notice you and decided whether you'd make a good member by organizing and participating in those events that you couldn't attend? If you do attend programs and community service events, do you make yourself known to members? Do members only know a face without a name? |
My questions:
Why do SFs ask "bold" questions on the internet, but won't DARE ask a Soror in person? *People get courage on the internet! They think that no one will ever figure out who they are so they get gully. Why do SOME SFs ask some of the most ridiculous questions without searching for the answer, if a answer exists? *They're lazy. Why do SFs 'flip flop' orgs they are so-called interested in? *They just want to belong to something so they don't really care what org. they are associated with. Why do SFs "claim" they want to be a member of XYZ, then become a member and DON'T DO JACK? *Can't say cause I wouldn't know. Is it worth thousands of dollars to become a member of XYZ, when you can do community service for free? *Some feel that becoming a member is more than just doing community service. Do you really want to become a member of an organization for the RIGHT reasons, or are you trying to get a man? get attention? *LOL, why make such a personal (and financial) committment to get a man? I believe I'm interested for the right personal reasons. Why is it that SOME SFs purport to know everything there is to know about greekdom, but have yet to become a member? *Maybe the opportunity hasn't presented itself yet. A SF can only know so much info, without being a member. Why put on a facade to try to get sponsorship? *Some people will do whatever it takes to get sponsored. Hopefully the members will see through the facade. Why look to an organization to define who you are? Why not have a sense of self BEFORE you join? *Sounds like personal issues to me. |
A specific GC-related SF question:
Why do some SFs who may be aware of the Ave.'s policy about membership and intake questions attempt to go to other areas of the board and expect questions to be answered? |
Honest answers only please
If you had an opportunity to attend a "closed" meeting (ie. Boule, Regional Conference) COMPLETELY undetected; would you go?
If all membership requirements were TOTALLY waived and ANYONE could be member, would you still want to be an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman? If the fees associated with membership were $10,000, would you still pursue. How about $25,000? If you KNEW FOR A FACT that another woman being considered for membership was a Liar, would you say anything? And why or why not .........How about a Thief?.......................How about a "homewrecker"........................... |
Now this one has me TOTALLY baffled
Why do some SF use screen/logon names that could suggest that they are members?

I will be honest: Yes. It's just part of my curiousity. If all membership requirements were TOTALLY waived and ANYONE could be member, would you still want to be an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman? Yes. It wouldn't change the way I feel. If the fees associated with membership were $10,000, would you still pursue. How about $25,000? Honestly, if I had the money, yes. If you KNEW FOR A FACT that another woman being considered for membership was a Liar, would you say anything? And why or why not .........How about a Thief?.......................How about a "homewrecker"........................... No. It's not my place. It's a tough call, but I still say no. |

If so, do you want to become a member of a CERTAIN sorority or ANY sorority? |
