What Not To Wear Question

If someone nominated you for "What Not to Wear" - and you were chosen - would you be offended? I have a friend I'd really like to nominate, but I'm afraid she'll take it the wrong way.

cntryZTA5 01-07-2005 02:59 PM

I might be a little bit at first. I would get over it when they gave me the credit card with $5,000 on it!

I joke with my mom that she should nominate me, just so I can go shopping :) .

DZTUBAGIRL 01-07-2005 02:59 PM

I personally wouldn't take offense to it. I know that I am not the fashion police and don't try to be. I think it would be awesome to be on that show. I guess it depends what this person is like. If they are someone that takes pride in their looks I think they will. If they are someone that really doesn't care about how they look I don't think they would. Good luck making up your mind!

AchtungBaby80 01-07-2005 03:02 PM

I'd be offended, just because I have a damned fashion degree. Otherwise...it might be fun. :p

sugar and spice 01-07-2005 03:06 PM

If you watch the show -- you see that a lot of people admit to being offended at first, but as the makeover goes along, they realize that they do look and feel much better about themselves and are ashamed that they allowed themselves to look so unkempt for so long. Most of them are really glad that it happened, even if they were kind of offended at first.

I think it depends on your friend, though. You know her better than we do, and if she's especially sensitive, I wouldn't do it. But if she's more laid-back, has a good sense of humor about most things, or admits straight-out that her sense of style is lacking, I say go for it.

valkyrie 01-07-2005 03:08 PM

If someone nominated me, I'd kick her in the face.

Seriously, I watched that show once and thought they were way to snotty and the woman host was wearing a really stupid outfit anyway. LOL outfit.

HAHA.

Okay, I seriously hate the hosts of this show. I think the idea is good and a lot of these people need it, but the hosts are EW.

I remember watching a rerun and Stacy made this one lady throw out this knit poncho-thing and told her, "That's hideous, and it's NEVER coming back in style." A few months later, guess what was in style? Oh yeah, those knit ponchos. Now I agree with her that they're hideous, but you know that she's a total hypocrite and has a closet full of them now that they're back in style.

abaici 01-07-2005 06:52 PM

I would be offended. However, the $5000 will soothe my damaged ego.

I LOVE CLINTON AND STACY!! I think they are fabulous. Now, I can't stand the hair stylist. I think he's dreadful!

pinkyphimu 01-07-2005 08:25 PM

when the show first came out, my friend and i talked about how upset we would be if someone nominated us. as we have watched the show more and have approved of the makeovers they do, both of us would be more than happy to be nominated. maybe secretly we hope that we each nominate each other...and both get chosen, so we could get $5000 worth of new clothes.

Sistermadly 01-07-2005 10:25 PM

Okay, so how do you tell someone that the way that they dress does them a HUGE disservice?

How do you tell someone that they need to wear "Spanx" under their dresses so that they don't look like they're 6 months pregnant -- and they're not?

How do you tell someone "Hon, have you EVER been fitted for a bra by a professional?"

How would you say "You are TOO DAMN OLD to be running around in a 19 year old's clothes!"

How do you delicately tell someone that the way that she dresses makes her look like she just rolled in off the corner trying to sell some jewelry that she stole from somewhere?

I used to think so too until I saw the episode with the black woman who had dreads and he told her that he wasn't going to do a thing to her hair because it was sexy, gorgeous, and one of the best ways for black women to take care of their natural hair. :D

AGDee 01-08-2005 12:42 AM

I keep BEGGING my co-workers to get me on this show, but they won't! I really could use a new wardrobe (although I know what looks best on me, my own clothes aren't a financial priority at this stage of life).

I like this show, and I don't think I would be offended if someone nominated me. I secretly hope someone would just so I could have a new wardrobe.

Anyway, I don't particularly like Stacy and Clinton. The English (and original show I might add) version with the 2 women is much better. Some of things Stacy wears are a little ridiculous.

As for your friend. Maybe you both can go on a shopping date and you can help her choose items of clothing that suit her body type?

I still think Nick is horrible. He has a "Mike Brady perm" for goodness sakes!!!

I recall an episode with a woman wearing locs...her wanted to CUT THEM!

norcalchick 01-10-2005 09:09 AM

I like this show. I like to watch people go shopping in nyc since i've never been there. i'm also a shopaholic, so i like to watch shopping period.

did anyone see the one where she got to spend $50,000 !!! i was so freaking jealous. she was in christian louboutin and i about died! on the website it tells you what she bought. i think she could have done better shopping though and not have gotten so many trendy coats that cost a lot of money.

Rollergirl2001 10-15-2005 03:29 AM

I like the British Version better. The American version is about "what's in" while the British Version talks about dressing for your body type.

kstar 10-15-2005 04:30 AM

I would do it.

I tend to look like I'm a freshman in highschool, not the substitute teacher when I go in.

When I dress up, it looks like a little girl in her moms clothes. They fit, but still don't look right.

I would love to get on the show. I'm tired of looking 13ish (and the braces don't help.)

SWTXBelle 02-28-2008 11:30 PM

I like the British version better( they are real women with real bodies!), but Stacy, Clinton , Carmindy and Nick do some amazing make-overs. I would gladly ditch my wardrobe to be on the show, but fear I am not fashion challenged enough.

nikki1920 02-29-2008 09:48 AM

I agree. The Brit version is better, the people look more real. The black girl looks a bit mannish, though, but she dresses her body, not the body she wants. I LOVE our version, though, I get good ideas about what works well for my petite frame. I always get good makeup tips from Carmindy.

Here here!
I love Stace and Clinton too. Nick can go somewhere with those scissors though... ehhh, and Carmody is ok.

If someone nominated me? I probably wouldn't care enough to get mad. He**, it's free money for good clothes and a trip to Manhattan. Never look a gift horse in the mouth.:)

Fawn Liebowitz 02-29-2008 02:55 PM

I have seen some people act like they were offended at first, but no one was unhappy about the experience at the end of the week - I know I wouldn't be.

33girl 02-29-2008 04:59 PM

There's no way I could do this show - unless it was makeup and hair color (not cut) only. I am far too much of a control freak (surprising, eh?).

ladylike 02-29-2008 05:20 PM

I LOVE Clinton! Stacy I can do without. If there is an episode featuring a woman with my body type, I always try to watch it.

SigKapSweetie 04-15-2008 08:19 PM

I LOVE this show, but I am a total clothes horse. My mom jokes that $5000 wouldn't even make a dent in my wardrobe. (and according to my Visa bill, she's probably right...)

OMG, i'm the total opposite of you! Seriously, I love shopping but I probably by one top every now and then. Its probably more because i'm self-conscious about my body shape, so I don't ever like anything I try on.

I would LOOOOVE to be on this show. I like that now you can nominate yourself, although I don't think i've ever seen someone get picked that way.

I've always wondered that! How can they toss your entire wardrobe and only spend five grand to replace just about every piece of clothing you own? I rarely buy cheap clothes - work slacks, jeans, and shoes alone cost a lot of money! Besides, would you really be wearing kitten heels and a blazer to go grocery shopping? I love the show, but some of the "casual" clothing suggestions are still a little too dressy for me. I would however, love new hair and makeup. Just because I've never gone to my stylist and told her, "do what you want!" I'd be curious to see what they would do for me.

Also, what do they do with the "rejected" clothing? Do you think they throw it way or donate it to places like the Salvation Army?

They donate it, unless it's beyond hope. I watched the 'behind the scenes' episode they did last year, and they made a point of mentioning that.

They also said that some people have asked if Clinton and Stacy are in a relationship.... How anyone in the country could have not figured out that Stacy is the wrong gender for Clinton is beyond me.

I am not one of those people...but sometimes I question Clinton's sexual orientation. lol. There are times he's on a show and he says something about a woman and i'm like

I space out my big spending so as not to cause complete heart failure, but I'm kinda in the same boat.

$5 k from that show would buy me 10 complete outfits MAX (that's skimping on the shoes) were I to follow my natural tastes and inclinations on clothes.

Yeah, but have you seen the man react int he face of the lingerie section? Hilarious. I don't know what he'd do if confronted with a thong, in any context.

aoiicutiepie14 04-17-2008 12:40 AM

I love Stacy and Clinton! I would be glad if I were nominated because then I would 5000 dollars worth of new clothes and I would get to meet them!

I have to agree with that one, however I'm a bit too plus sized right now to be picked. I've actually learned a lot about clothing choices from the show. I'd even trust Nick with my hair.

GeekyPenguin 04-17-2008 09:11 AM

I think that they don't actually get rid of ALL your clothes - just the worst one. For instance, you rarely see them getting rid of jeans or work basics for people unless it's someone wearing mom jeans or tapered pants or something.

If only to meet Clinton! He's so darn cute ::sigh::

Senusret I 04-17-2008 10:58 AM

I think the $5,000 they give is a crock. It seems like they make the people buy THEE MOST expensive crap!

I wouldn't be offended if I was nominated for the show by a FRIEND. I am not a good judge of what kind of clothes I would look best in. I also hate shopping.
