SORORITY pledge-what do they do??
what do the pledges in sorrorities usually have to?what are the most common initiation assignments?
i heard they sometimes have to run naked through campus or drink a lot of alcohol ... |
In the older days, this might have been the case; however, most sororities today do not allow hazing and have strict policies banning such activities.
Sororities that have such policies usually make the new member period (it's no longer called "pledging" for this reason) a short time (6 to 8 weeks) and gives the new member an opportunity to learn about the sorority's heritage in addition to bonding with their new member sisters. Yes, parties are involved and are fun, but you are not required to do anything that goes against your own personal beliefs...if you feel this is happening to you in ANY circumstance, then you need to let the advisors know!!! Each sorority has a chapter advisor who upholds the national bylaws of that organization and to guide the collegiates through a positive experience... Things have changed a lot since those days that you describe. It's usually a positive experience that provides opportunity for self-growth and exploration... |

Where's that troll picture when you need it?
They circled my fat and they made me and my best friend hang our banner off the highest tower on campus even though they knew she was afraid of heights. |

you made me snort, i laughed so hard! |
mainly they have topless pillowfights
then, sometimes, they wear white dresses as well for rituals...but rituals are just more formalized pillow fights |
And then they made us walk around campus in avacado masks, hair curlers and bathrobes.
Oh wait... that was the rerun of 90210 I saw. My bad. |
if you believe the rumors at dartmouth, then today's pledges are performing lap dances at fraternity houses. Whatever happened to good old fashioned hazing and hand jobs. Pledging used to be so predictable....

Which groups has the mandatory calisthetics to fit in their cat suits?
Imagine pledges running behind a pick up truck with a twinkie on a pole ;).... tsk tsk... |
I know that no one on here is dumb enough to say that their chapter hazes. However I have chatted in private with other GC members that say that sororities on thier campus definitely haze.
Some of the things this girl told me blew me away. We would NEVER be able to get away with it...even if we wanted to...at Ole Miss. We can't even make the pledges do study hall hours or make them learn names of actives. NOTHING that singles them out as a pledge. But I KNOW some GLOs at other schools do. I have never heard of ANY instances at Ole Miss---at least for sororities. We just shower our pledges with gifts until they are initiated. |
i didnt think someone would say their chapter or sorority hazes but i just wanted to know some examples, what pple have heard of...like the mean/bad stuff

i was initiated into zta in 1976, way before the anti-hazing legislation came about. what is now considered hazing was stuff i participated in as a pledge(which is what we were called then). we had to learn all the actives names, their hometowns and majors. we each had to write a song about our pledgeship, the sorority or an event that happened during our pledgeship-the song could be nice or it could be a roast.onetime, as dinner was being served, we had to run upstairs, turn our clothes inside out and come back to dinner. they had replaced our dinner with green spaghetti, and for dessert they had vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce and we had cold mashed potatoes with chocolate sauce. we were not supposed to eat it! then they told us to go down to the basement and brought us back one by one and blindfolded us and drove us to a hotdog cookout they had secretly planned for us. it was so much fun. they would also occasionally have us stand up during dinner and sing a song or recite something like the founders names or our founding date or the like. of course these were all done during closed dinners when no guests could be invited. we never did anything in front of non zetas and we did not consider it hazing. i did not feel demeaned and neither did any of my pledge sisters. it was all done in fun and it WAS fun. the other sororities on the campus were also doing similar things, but nothing was harmful and was all done in the spirit of fun.

Honestly dude who goes to a school named after a toothpaste tube, rent Spring Break and wank a little and you'll lose the need to ask silly questions. |
This may be a little silly, but I actually wanted to be hazed when I was a new member... stuff like what FSUZeta was talking about sounds like fun- and I doubt that anything bad would have happened to anyone had they forgotten a founding member when placed on the spot. Things like circling fat are part of the evil side of hazing, the demeaning actions... but activities that bond you to the group seem like sisterhood to me. I guess I just think that things should be as... easy... as they are now. New members can wear letters without even knowing the meaning behind them, simply because refusing to let them is singling them out of the group and therefore hazing...
I'm getting off topic... My chapter didn't haze, but I wanted them to. |

My sorority doesn't have a pledge period (we do our initiation soon after the bid is accepted). However, we do work with each individual new member on learning about the sorority and such.

I don't know...but do you wanna know what the heartthrob gets to do? |

I mean if you want to know what they do in general, that's one thing, but focusing on the naughty/dirty stuff is is going to vary from campus to campus and chapter to chapter. Besides, unless anyone here has first hand knowledge of bad stuff, everything said is just a rumor and not something you will most likely encounter. So basically sororities sit around in a circle and make arts and crafts and discuss the penis size of their professor's while watching tv and trying to decide what to wear to the next party on the weekend.... Oh yea, and pillow fights.... |

See, in my chapter we MUST attend study tables as part of New member Ed. All sisters, active and pledge, must attend and observe quiet (unless helping someone else). sisters may opt not attend study tables if they are attending a supplimentary instruction (tutoring) session at that time.
Was I hazed? if you ask me, nope. Nothing we did was demoralizing or demeaning, most of it was just crazy fun. No one ever got mad if you messed up on an answer because it happens. We all understand that. Most of the time the wrong answers were pretty hillarious and we laughed about it. these activities aren't meant to show how lowly you are or any of that BS, for me it helped me open up and speak out and be able to approach people I didn't know. I learned that everything is possible if you just learn how to ask for help. |
We aren't supposed to make the pledges do anything that we wouldn't have the sisters doing as well... as far as the study hours topic, if it was determined that our GPA should be raised, the entire chapter might do study hours, but we would not single out the pledges to have their own.
I think that the types of "hazing" that FSUzeta described would have been fun to have happen during a pledge period :) Now things are so PC that you really have to watch everything you say and do so that nothing will be misconstrued as hazing. Other sorority members have said they "wanted to be hazed"... it sounds silly but I did too :) All that nonsense, I probably would have had fun, lol. Like hottytoddy said, your whole pledge period is like Christmas. You're showered with gifts until initiation.... and then the next year when you get a little, you do the same for her! Edited to change quote attribution. |

 Whoops. It's changed.
Sorry kddani, didn't mean to do that.:o |
well, i want to know stuff about hazing cause im not american, and i could only hear about it on tv and it was "running around naked, drinking a lot of alcohol...", so i wanted to know what else i could expect. i dont care if those are only rumors, they give me an idea of what i could expect if i decide to pledge.
and why are u giving such remarks abour colgate?..have u even heard of it ?? it's a very very good college, ALTHOUGH it has the same name as the toothpaste ;) |
maybe you should read some of the many other threads on this board to get an idea of what to expect, instead of wanting stupid rumors that aren't true for probably 99% of chapters (at least!). What you can expect is that every NPC sorority has a 1800 number or another number that you will be given at the very beginning of your pledge period, that is a "hazing hotline" of sorts, so that if any of these illegal activities occur you can properly report them
