Snootiest?

starting the New Year on a fraternal note....who is regarded as
the snootiest fraternity/sorority? Excluding Phi Beta Kappa, the
honoraries, the professionals and others...among the NIC, NPC,
ethnic ones...who is considered the loftiest on your campus and
how long has this remained so? Reputations and stereotypes can be good or bad. And some are of long-standing duration.
Money, good grades, IMs, housing, size, appearance...what are
the criteria? Who do you think fits and why?
Nothing like starting the new year on a fraternal note...LOL

Senusret I 12-31-2004 04:53 PM

lol @ "Ethnic Ones"

Gimme a break, there's less keystrokes in "NPHC" than "ethnic ones."

On any campus, it is always the sorority with a working fireplace that is the snootiest. Seriously, it is.

Kindf of like the way that the fraternity with the underground parking, and a helipad on the roof is the snootiest.

OleMissGlitter 12-31-2004 05:44 PM

At Ole Miss we are all snooty! Just kidding. I use to think some sororities were more than others but now that I know so many of their alumnae because of my job with the university, I really think we are all alike! Just different letters and different rituals. We are all good women who do good things and care about our GLOs.

PS I was told that one particular sorority at Ole Miss had a tanning bed room for their members...so not true....

Don't forget the 9-hole golf course, tennis court and in-room beer distribution system - for cold beer anytime of the day! :D

9-hole? That is pathetically poor. I spit on the peasant dogs.

This thread remind me of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Maitre'd: “I'm suggesting that you leave before I have to get snooty.”
Ferris: “Snooty?”
Maitre'd: “Snotty!”
Ferris: “Snotty?!

Nahhh, Moe... ya gotta leave barely enough room for the fraternity or sorority next door so's they can build another 9-hole course. Since no one ever plays golf sober, ever... charge trespassers who stumble onto the other course some ridiculous greens fees or have to do inverted keg stands in the clubhouse! :D

I thought we'd kept that a secret.

To be honest, there were some houses that I thought were pretty snooty when I was in school.

But I wouldn't care to name them today because things do change over time.

ZZ-kai- 12-31-2004 10:06 PM

Erik,

I am not going to toss any more shit onto this thread, but I think I understand where you may be coming from. Hey, maybe not the 'snootiest', but why not the "fraternity/sorority with a long standing tradition"? Whats wrong with tooting your own horn, as long as you're not blasting another org.

For example, Beta Theta Pi:
* had a Beta on the Supreme Court from 1877 to 1975, including the late Justice William O. Douglas
* is a leader among college fraternities with members listed in Whos Who in America and Canadian Whos Who more than any other fraternity
* has more than 85 Rhodes Scholars more than any other fraternity
* is the first college fraternity to publish an open constitution for public distribution (1879)
* brother Jay Fielder is the half-time starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. (lol)

Also, for example, Beta Theta Pi Chapter:
* University of Kansas, since 1934, have had the highest GPA among KU fraternities every semester but five (they finished second in '48, '51, '53, '82, and '00).
* Kansas State University Beta's so dominated the Inter-fraternity Sing that trophy was retired to their house.
* Texas Tech University raised over $10,000 during their annual Beta 500 go-cart philanthropy.
* UCLA hosts their annual Alumni Golf Outing, where Brother Scott McCarron, PGA Pro., regularily attends.
* Georgia Tech has won the Dean Dull (best overall fraternity) 26 of the last 28 years.
* 'Wooglin Night-Club', a date party for Zeta Phi at Mizzou, has been held sing 1926.
* Mizzou Beta's have won the Intramural championship 29 out of the past 36 years.
* at Washington & Jefferson University, is the oldest chapter of ALL GLO'S of continuous existance, founded on June 1, 1842 - they have never been inactive!

Again, its not a bragging forum, its just a way to show some kick-ass unique stuff about your GLO or some of your chapters. I'd love to hear some cool info. about your org.

In the spirit of the New Year, here is to fellow Old Miami Triad fraternity Beta Theta Pi. A prince among fraternities.

ZZ-kai- 12-31-2004 10:35 PM

TSteven,

Right back atcha, Sigma Chi - I visitied your Alpha House for a few hours while I was in Miami (post fire in the late 1990's??) - that place is unreal, huge as a matter of fact. The guys were great, showed me around and talked for a few hours.

Sigma Chi, a true leader in the greek world, has been since 1855 and probably will be for another 150 years!

Miami Triad, its a great thing.

Happy New Year!

TSteven 12-31-2004 10:37 PM

My freshman roommate in college - and still good friend - is a Delt and one of the finest gentleman I have ever been honored to know. So here is a toast to the fine Brotherhood of Delta Tau Delta.

TSteven 12-31-2004 10:43 PM

Thank you kindly sir! Beta's outstanding example of brotherhood should be an example to us all.

Best for 2005 and beyond.

DeltAlum 01-01-2005 12:26 AM

T. Steven,

Thank you very much for the kind words. Obviously, I agree. While not one of the biggest, Delt is a fine, longstanding organization that has accomplished much and taught me a lot.

And now, brother greeks, as an Ohio University graduate and Beta Chapter alumni, I must admit, although it pains me to say that anything good has ever come out of Miami of Ohio, I have great respect for all of the Triad fraternities. Both Beta and Sigma Chi were well represented on the O.U. campus as leaders and gentlemen.

Erik P Conard 01-01-2005 01:01 AM

nothing wrong at all...

Nothing wrong at all about tooting your horn....and Beta is a good example. Their loyalty is something else. One of my high
school buddies flew from Denver to Manhattan, KS for the reunion
of their fall '54 pledge class. 19 showed up out of the original 25.
Mind now, this was just a pledge class. Kansas State has one of
the best over-all systems in US, many, many top chapter awards
given. TKE has won IMs 17 out of last 19 years there. Of the two
houses at KU to unseat (briefly) Beta on grades...TKE was one,
AKL (now inactive) was the other. But Beta recovered quickly!
The Miami Triad all great, and leaders almost everywhere, and I
think SAE best all around amongst larger fraternities. But each of
us has something, somewhere, to brag about. Why not?
Pride and success in your fraternity and continued loyalty is but a
harbinger of greater things for us all. Now, go out and tell the
world how great it is to be a greek. Happy New Year!

ZZ-kai- 01-01-2005 01:08 AM

Re: nothing wrong at all...

On that note, lets give it up to Ronald Reagan, TKE Eureka College, initiated 1929.

clarification...

Tooting one's own horn is not what I meant by "snooty"--and
pride, winning, and good grades do not make a snooty outfit!
One chapter at CU, currently inactive, took out a full page in the
CU daily paper, saying something like this:
"Piss in the tall grass with the big dogs. Pledge ___ ___"
Now that is snooty.
Winning is not snooty, and I hope I did not give the impression
that it is. We all strive to win. And, snootiness is a matter of
opinion, too, a judgement call, fair or not, warts and all.
I think I'll go eat worms.

CarolinaDG 01-01-2005 01:28 AM

I want a tanning bed in my house!!!! Seems like a simple thing to have, though. Convert one of the libraries, buy a tanning bed (they can't be THAT expensive, anyway!). Sounds like a plan. I don't think any of the sororities at S. Carolina have working fireplaces, though, so I don't think that works for us... I've only been in a few of the houses, though. Maybe I wasn't looking that hard for it.

Oh, and are the SHIMS snooty? I thought they were pretty open-minded, actually. :-P

Snootiest, E C, sory but that is an im-proper post.

As some said the School has a lot to do with the snobbiest, I am, You am!

I love going to smaller State U's, where Greeks are good or not, going to Larger Colleges where Greeks are Great or not.

Those that act like that will find out that times change and not

Being King/Queen of the hill doesnt last forever!

I have respect for Certain Greek Organizatins if not all, but for some Members I dont.

Just check some ones signature to show how immature HE really is! This is by no way reflective on Its Fraternity!

Can you explain this one? I put one in the Kappa house at South Carolina so I'm trying to figure it out!

CarolinaDG 01-01-2005 02:53 PM

PKTKKG... Is it working fireplaces at USC? I thought it was "fake" balconies. ;-) (To anyone reading this, there was a rumor going on that Kappas balcony was fake... absolutely ridiculous since somewhere there's a picture of all the girls standing on it)

Either way, I don't think Kappa is snooty, so I don't think that works.

I would love to know where that 'fake' balcony rumor got started. It began during recruitment last year right after we moved in (PNMs came into our parties saying that they heard we couldn't use our balcony). After the first day of parties was over, I sent all the girls up to the balcony to hang out and have their dinner as the PNMs left the Greek Village!

I think I know who started it, but I won't say here. I did here from someone that KD restricted their members use of their balcony, but that could be another one of those rumors that is not true so I have not repeated it until now.

This is so weird. I heard a rumor about a fake balcony on a fraternity house about ten years ago. I think that it might have started because someone was afraid it might collapse if too many people stood on it. I forget the details. It was around the same time that a local house was condemned because the floor was caving it. Anyway this is nowhere near USC, but I thought it was weird how similar rumors spread a decade apart.

the fire happened during the fall of 2000. while an unfortunate thing, it helped bring the Miami Greek community and the entire Miami and Oxford community together unlike it had been in a long time, with everyone working together to help out the guys in the fraternity. They did an amazing job with rebuilding the house after the fire. it came out beautiful.

Yeah, I admit I wouldn't want my group to be thought of as "snooty," but... you have to admit... in order to be perceived as a "snooty" group -- there has to be some association with excellence. (The worst group on campus will never be referred to as snooty.)

An ode to Snooty Royalty

I hear that the snootiest
fraternities set up shop
at junior colleges. This
is the kind snoot in the
hierarchy of fraternities.
The queen snoot of
fraternities, however, is
the one where certain
members become awful
alumni and speak in
tongues while burning
crosses (a symbol from
their crests that also
serves to illustrate their
hate for "ethnic ones".

Firehouse 01-03-2005 01:45 PM

Rudy, I generally follow, but this time I don't. Are you talking about Klansmen or the Klan as a fraterntiy? I don't think any national fraternities are like that at all. I'm probably mis-reading what you're saying. Are you talking about a particular chapter?

I think Pi Iota Gammas and Eta Omicron Gammas are the snootiest. :)

CarolinaDG 01-04-2005 11:50 AM

Well, at USC there's a pool within a block of the greek village at the gym (outdoor and indoor) so I think it's safe to say that our girls would probably rather a tanning bed. Though, ZTA has a sister that has a spray tan salon and she'll bring the stuff to them every once in a while, so I guess that's practically like having a tanning bed in the house.

And if you don't want to get rid of the library, you could always convert one of the bedrooms.
