Jet Beauty of the week
Did anyone see the Jet that has Aaliyah on the cover? The Jet beauty of the week is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Hey Soror! I did see the Beauty of the week!
|
I saw it too!
|
Hello to all the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
I have 2 things to say: 1. Did anyone find it offensive that this young lady chose to state she is a member of your org while posing in a bikini? 2. Because I have a photographic memory I know I have met this young lady before, due to the fact that she is from Illinois, has further confirmed my theory. Does any here know Ms. Kishinna Foxie a graduate of Central State University? |

2. I hung out with this chapter of sorors whenever we went to Central State or Wilberforce so if I saw the picture, I might recognize her. |
My point EXACTLY!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

I don't see a problem with wearing a bikini. In fact, I was proud to see she was a Delta!

I also don't have a problem with her wearing a bikini, Delta's do have sex appeal
|
I wasn't going to post because I had a differing opinion as well. I was not necessarily offended, but when I saw DST up under her description I was shocked. Jet Beauty has always been about showcasing (for lack of a better term) physical attributes. Nothing more, nothing less. They used to even give the woman's meaurements! Delta stands for so much more than the way we as Sorors look in a bikini, or "measure up". Yeah, she's got it...flaunt it. But I don't see it being any different as if she had been in playboy. She's still participating in a traditionally sexist venture, which our Founders fought against. Now, don't get me wrong, any one who wants to pose for whoever, whenever, however has that right, I just didn't think it was appropriate to mention Delta's name alongside it.

i wasn't going to post on the topic but i am glad that we have a soror that is a jet beauty of the week. it goes to show that Delta's are invloved in everything. women in general, now have the choice to chose whether they want become involved in things like these.
i wish they had a beauty of the week that had men...then it would balance it out. http://www.plauder-smilies.de/thinkerg.gif but my question is what if it was a different magazine say...playboy or penthouse? would she then be degrading herself? |

I believe the real concern is not whether or not she should have worn the bikini and posed for JET, but whether or not she should have told the audience that she was a member of DST.
Now, to be honest, in all my years of reading JET, I've never known a JET Beauty to state their membership in any organization and I'm sure this one wasn't the first to be in a sorority. Can anyone site any issues with members of other organizations? Moving on. I'm having difficulty with this one because I can't say that my soror is right or wrong for 1. Being a JET Beauty and 2. saying that she's a Delta because I don't know what her intentions were/are. I can hardly put JET on the scale with Playboy and Penthouse...we're talking about two totally different types of magazines here. I've got to give her the benefit of the doubt and say that surely she got advice from someone, a soror, a seasoned soror (I hope) before she made the decision to publicize that she is a Delta. ------------------ "Director" #2 LaMarque Alumnae Chapter Spr 99 [This message has been edited by DirectorDST99 (edited July 27, 2001).] |
it is understood that jet and penthouse/playboy are two entirely different magazines.
so i will rephrase the question. how would you feel about a member of an organization posing for either penthouse/playboy and then disclosing the organization she is in? |

If a Delta were to pose in a magazine that is geared towards objectification and domination of women, I would hope that she would not attach the sororities name to her enterprise. I don't see anything wrong with JET though. Its tasteful and not negative in the least so I don't see the problem. |

[b] MAMA: hello my good friend. I would take issue with it. We have a Bruh who is a superstar in the porn industry. I know that he takes great pains to minimize his brand, but the Cardinal Principles are not really reflected in his work (at least not the way they were intended). He is actually a good bruh according to his chapter bruhs. And where can we find his material to deem if it is appropriate... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif [This message has been edited by Reds6 (edited July 27, 2001).] |
Personally, I am appalled by the whole "Beauty of the Week" thing-- PERIOD! It never did go with JET Magazine, if ya ask me. One minute, we're reading about the struggles and/or successes of our people; the next we're staring at some woman's partially clad body! WTF?!?!? As Blacks, we, of all people, should move away from defining beauty by physical attributes. I don't really have an opinion about whether or not she should have divulged her greek affiliation; I simply have a problem with JET still having a "Beauty of the Week" photo, even though it markets itself as serious news journalism.

Maybe it is outdated. You can watch B.E.T and see all the Jet Beautys you want in any video. You GreekChat Delta Beautys have a Diva-esque weekend. Two nasty tongue wags and I'm gone, alright alright. |
As I sat and thought about this a little more, I tried to "put myself in my Soror's shoes" and try to understand what she thought. Of course, it's just me trying to rationalize, but I thought of a different spin:
[I have a beautiful body. I am a member of DST. I want to pose for Jet BOTW, but I have more to offer than just the way I look. But how will I tell the world that? I know, I'll tell them I'm part of an illustrious sisterhood dedicated to the betterment of society. Then they will know that I not only have beauty, I have intelligence, determination, etc. etc.] I don't even know if that makes sense, but I'm trying to make heads or tails of it as to why she chose to mention DST while posing half naked. Regardless, I hope she's an active member of her chapter to the point that she's well deserving to broadcast it. Anyone feel me? Pebs |

Alright, I have a question for everyone. I am seeing both sides of this issue. And I will say that I would be against it if A Soror was posing in penthouse/playboy...etc and braging that she is a Soror.
The main reasons I have seen posted against the BBOTW posted is that she is Representing our Sorority. And that she is wearing a swimsuit and not going swimming. So what do you think about a Soror in a beauty pagent. We have had Sorors compete for various titles. But once again she is modeling a swimsuit and representing our Sorority. |
Here I go again...
I think beauty pageants are ALSO a bunch of BS! Why the swimsuit competition??!?! When will you ever be in a swimsuit and high heel dress shoes? Since when does the so-called "perfect body" make you queen-worthy? Don't get me started. And I'm Out! ------------------ Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Pi Kappa, SP97 #3 of QUINTESSENCE |

I'm not a Jet BOTW expert, but I believe they answer a survey and the the publisher pulls what they want to use - the only reason I say this is because when I was in graduate school (about a decade ago) a student submitteed her picture and was told she was going to be published - word got out to the dean and she was told she would be expelled if the school's name was associated with her picture - not only was she not sure what bio info would be printed, she didn't know when it would publish - believe it or not, she traveled to Chicago to ensure that the bio would not mention the school - as it turned out, the picture never ran. I don't want to get off the subject, but if we were a bit more selective of applicants, we might not be discussing this - if she's a soror, she should be free to let anyone know - I've seen worse behavior from sorors at public events (i.e. greek picnic) than the photo in Jet. Would folks be so up in arms if she were a body builder and had on a bikini in an industry magazine and it was also mentioned that she was a soror - or if she were in a beauty pageant that included a swimsuit segment??
