J. Lo and the "N" word
Hello ladies. I'm always interested in your thoughts so I thought I'd find out what you think of this. If you've heard J.Lo's new remix to "I'm real" you'll notice her use of the "N" word...something to the effect of "n****s sweat me." On Hot 97, Starr suggested that black people write her record company to let them know they are not pleased with her use of the word. I'm torn. On the one hand, she is not black, so imagine if you heard Christina Aguilera or Justin Timberlake talking about "my n****s. On the other hand, we do it so flippantly, how long did we think it would take for people who are comfortable with us and our culture to start doing it. But all in all, I think she was wrong for it, she could have just as easily said "spics", but she wouldn't have dared.
|
Good point but puerto ricans have the SAME roots as African Americans so if we embrace the word and claim it is used positively then why can't she? After all - she is black. I do use the word e'er now and then and I am not proud of myself b/c I am trying to stop using it b/c there is nothing positive about it. Our forefathers were killed while this crude word was spat at them with venom and hate. I know our ancestors did not die so we AA's can continue the legacy of disrespect shown us over the centuries. Overall...if we can use it so can she (in the same context).
|
J. Lo ain't black. Not to me, anyway. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
What do I think? I think it's wrong. But I think that a rush of letters or calls from African-American listeners would only reinforce how hypocritical some of us are, because I also think it's wrong when I hear it from anybody's mouth, black or otherwise. I haven't noticed another huge letter-writing campaign against the numerous black artists who use the word... so truthfully, why should J. Lo or her record company execs listen to what we have to say? [This message has been edited by SweetestDiva (edited July 03, 2001).] |
I'm glad this topic has come up. I absolutely, positively http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gifHATE/LOATHE/ABHOR http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif the use of the "n" word by ANYONE, and ESPECIALLY by BLACKS! It's SO SAD & PATHETIC that whites can oppress us so much that they can actually "convince" (for lack of a better word) us to call ourselves the same offensive things they've called us! It's just like we've been brainwashed to believe that the very negative connotations whites associate with the word are actually true for us as a people.
I don't buy into that BULLS**T EXCUSE that "it doesn't mean the same thing when we say it"!!! Fact is, WE didn't create the word! Let's look at our history! I don't give two s**ts and a rat's a$$ what it has come to mean now that we're using it--it is and always will be a word meant to OFFEND and DEGRADE blacks. That, in and of itself is reason enough to erase it from ALL languages, from English, to Ebonics, to Hebrew, to Yiddish! Fact is, we, as BLACKS, are so lax and carefree in our use of the word that we have NO RIGHT to be offended when anyone else uses it, and yet, for some reason we are! WTF?!?!? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif If we are still getting pissed about non-blacks saying it, then we should stop using it. PERIOD! I am disgusted by it, and ashamed when I see/hear whites (who buy more of our music than we do) jamming to a hip hop song drenched in the "n" word! I always wonder what they're thinking when they hear us call ourselves the very thing our grandfathers and grandmothers FAUGHT to avoid for years! I always think that they're secretly smiling at their granparents' accomlishment-- that they've made us belive that we ARE niggas! As long as WE keep saying it, THEY keep winning. How can we get nad at other folks for using the word if we continue to use it?! I used to use the term when I was younger but once I got to college and became eduated and enlighted on what I was really saying I made a conscious decision to no longer use the word...I think it's hypocritical for blacks to get angry at her but then some of us turn around and call our "homie" a n*&$%!! WTF is that!! However, I think that Miss J.Lo has gotten a bit TOOOOO comfortable with black folks and has no business using the word either (just like we shouldn't use it)...I think she's just trying to imitate what she thinks will sell in hip-hop culture...when she hears black rappers use the word, she thinks "Oh, that's hip-hop"...I think it alll relates to the fact that the true culture of hip-hop today is disillusioned and not like it used to be...now it's all about who jacked who for their platinum ice...I agree--"they" are winning an will continue to until we as a people can get over issues like this. ------------------ "If there is no struggle, there is no progress"--Frederick Douglass |
I agree w/ the411. I hate hearing that word from our people b/c it makes NO sense whatsoever for US to be calling each other that. And as far as J.Lo using it...I most definitely DO NOT condone that. That girl is NOT black. That girl reps Puerto Rico like there ain't no tomorrow! If you watched the making of the video for "I'm Real", she goes right up to the camera and flashes her little Puerto Rican flag bra top she has on and says "Puerto Rico!" She ALWAYS throws in her roots whenever I hear/see her. I agree w/ S_N_S in that she is getting TOO comfy w/ either her fellow black peers or w/ the whole hip hop scene. Frankly, I can't believe she'd say that. She must obviously think she's "down" enough w/ US to do that. Whatever!

I am glad this topic is here, because my boyfriend and I were discussing her use of the word today. I am definitely down for writing and e mailing her record people and sending e mail and messages to different places to get the ball rolling. That chick is getting a lil to comfortable. Does anyone know where to write or e-mail?

I hope ya'll don't mind me posting. If anyone of you do, just ignore me. Ok, I'm white and I hate the word. And I know it has to bother(for lack of a better word)african-americans(or ya'll who refrain from it's use) 10 million times worse than it could ever bother me as a white person. I honestly wanna blow up in someone's face when they use the word around me. And unfortunately, it's use is rampant where I live(as it probably is in many places), and is used by ALMOST everyone I know at some time or another. The one person I know who does not say it is my mother. I honestly cannot stand the "n" word. It drives me up the wall. It's hard to explain to ignorant, naive people why the word shouldn't be used and just makes me cringe. I wish people would get over thereselves(grammer?) and realize it's no way to go through life ignorant. PLEASE move into the 21st century(it is that century, right??). Everyone is equal and should be treated accordingly http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I hope my post was okay and you all seem like extremely nice, smart and enlightened people. Ok, the word is NOT going to go away. That's for sure.
Chris Rock said it best, when black people say it, it is saying "wussup" etc. If white people or other say it, it does not translate like that, you think of lynchings, police dogs, and the KKK. That is just a fact. Just because we use it doesn't mean someone else should be able to use it, cause they damn sure wouldn't do the same for you. Cause if they could trade skin with us guess what? they wouldn't! Just because she was with Puffy doesn't mean she gets a "ghetto pass" I am on the radio and you can be sure she will get clowned by miss qte. |
I hope yall don't mind a brotha jumpin' in on this.
The word originated from the slave drivers on the first ships to the west coast of Africa. These slavers were the dumbest(least educated), poorest europeans; and did ANYTHING-including risking their lives- for a meal. They were Portuguese, and their language has its roots in Latin, much like Spanish, English, and Italian. The word "nigga" comes from the Portuguese/Spanish word Negro, which means black(color). Because these slavers were from the lowest socio-economic class, they couldn't even speak their own language properly; thus, nigga-instead of Negro. The word stuck with us because we too, had trouble learning how to pronounce the languages of our enslavers(thus we were considered dumb). To use that word confirms what many white people think of us already: if they aren't dumb, why do they adopt/accept such an offensive term to refer to their collective selves? As for J-Lo being black; she is not, never was, and never will be. She tried/tries to be when it's profitable for her; but now she knows yall gon buy her cds, she can be herself. She is Latina; and that's that. It is true that our bloods mixed when the conquistadores and their slaves came; but not many Latinos care to remember that fact. I look at them like they are our "cousins", instead of brothas. Like 411 said, it's stupid for us to use that word. |
Quote:
I am using the term "Black Latinos" loosely meaning more Black influence or latinos who relate more with the Black side of their background, just to make my point clearer... The U.S. uses "White Hispanic" and "Black Hispanic"...but not plain Hispanic...this is confusing; I don't know if they still use this. Also, just because they may look "white or lightly-tanned" doesn't necessarily mean that they may NOT accept their Black side...it's the way they are brought up. See, even IF a culture has a mixture of Black and other cultures, there are STILL many Latinos who relate more with the Black influence than the European one. Many Latinos celebrate their heritage and roots with their music (that has African drums and other instruments and beats that originated in Africa, for example: Merengue). They also have different foods. Many "Black Latinos" also speak a different Spanish dialect because of these influences. So Latinos in general share a mixture of cultures, but there is usually a side more dominant than the other and this is what influences how they are brought up and what culture they will mostly relate to. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I agree...the "N" word should be done away with...but so many rappers and people use it, it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Hey, I just heard "Mi Amore" with Angie Martinez and Jay-Z...she also uses the "N" word...a lot of people use it.
|
What?!!!
I personally haven't heard her use of the word because my musical preference is christian. However, to comment on anyone not of the African American race using the word is just outrageous. But why should you be offended when someone calls you such-if you use it on a day to day basis. I am a female of color-my ancestors are a great melting pot of mainly African American or at least that's the dominance by my skin color. If you had a son who was handicapped and some called him straight up retarded would you be offended by that? They are just stating a fact right. How do you know they didn't mean retarded in a "good" way? Exactly! As educated individuals, most of us having and seeking college degrees how can we allow ourselves to be degraded. You don't hear white people calling each other crackers and rednecks, italians calling each other wops, chinese saying what's up chink, etc etc. So why should it be said what's up my nig? If I'm not mistaken aren't you making the ancient definition of Nigga mean "person of color specifically african americans". So many people wonder why other cultures look down on US. Ever think it could be that some people don't respect our own race enough to make something positive for addressing each other. Instead, they'd rather kill each other up over chump change for drugs and armory. Your pockets are only temporarily fat. What happens when you get to be 30 and 40 if you make it that long? What happens when you get caught? What happens when you sell someone some imitation? Etc etc. How do you really think drugs are brought over here? And why do you think they will ban Marilyn Mason and keep kill a nig. Do you really think we've traveled far enough in time that it doesn't matter anymore? What can you say for our race? How many know all the words to the "Negro" National Anthem? What holidays are truly African American Holidays? Why does the Holacost get all respect and slavery gets pushed over like it's a crutch for black people? Why do black people still feel inferior to whites? Remember the saying together we stand, apart we fall? Who would be afraid of something that is afraid of itself? |
Welllll, I don't like it when blacks use the N word...but, we can't compare our use of the N word with that of non-blacks. It's a completely different word and meaning...it doesn't make it right...but, we would be lying if we compared the two usages.
I don't think the issue is whether or not Jennifer is black--she's ethnic when she feels like it, just like Mariah---I think the issue is that whites and "others" will hear her use the word...and since THEY don't see her as black...they will feel it is okay for them to use the word. I don't think it has much to do with her being comfortable with the black culture (b/c the N word isn't necessarily part of our culture), but similarly, Eminem feels quite comfortable with our culture (maybe too comfortable) and he states that he would use any word EXCEPT for N word (out of respect for the people who's music he is copying). |
Thank you soror, that is my point!
Let's just all agree right now that we all don't like the word, it's a horrible word to use and hopefully one day the word will be done away. now that we have that out the way, let's get back to the subject at hand! The point is, who uses this word. Black people(ignorant or not). It is part of urban street language just like the frequent use of the word "chickenhead" "bi***" and other words. If you let non blacks start saying a word because "well we say it, why shouldn't they?" that is only the start. Nigga will be changed to nigger, and so on. You nip it in the bud and let them know that using that word is NOT COOL, black or non black! I have noticed that more white kids say nigga than black people. All that I know is that I doubt Eminem will say the N word, he knows better! qte |
Answer this. Because alot of people do wrong, does that make doing wrong acceptable/cool? When you see drama, is it in most of our hearts to try and stop it; or watch it and be entertained by it? Are you still around at the end; and if so, do you still feel "entertained"? It's this kind of curiousity and cold-hearted indifference that perpetuates the violence in our society. Check out the videos. What are their themes?
Sex, money, violence, and revenge. Even thugs need a break! Dayum! Because so many people use the word shouldn't make it acceptable; it just means we have our work cut out for us in terms of tryin' to get our own to stop usin' it. I betcha it'll stop if we collectively stopped buying videos that use that word. |

Ok , I hate the word! i heard the song and wa swondering when the question would surface. I think JLO and Angie Martinez use the word is because of their roots.. I lived in NY and it isn't strange to hear the Puerto Ricans calling each other the N word just like blacks. So it wasn't a shock to hear it in her song. I think JLO takes great pride in being Puerto Rican and is not ashamed of it or trying to hide her heritage. I have many friends that are Puerto Rican and they do see themselves as having a black heritage and some consider themselves blacks. This also goes for many Dominicans. I think JLO has a great marketing team behind her who knows how to market her to both markets. Would there be as much hoopla if Mirah Carey said the N word, know ing she is biracial? Again I hate the word and will never use or allow my son to use it.
|
I guess us folks in NYC see it differently. I was discussing this with my friend who happens to be Puerto Rican, and we grew up in the same hood, faced the same type of challenges and racism with racist cops and the like, and the same economic "walls". We relate to each other. She will call any dude around the way: "Yo that is my n****" and nobody will take offense to it. I think of Puerto Ricans as black people with straight hair anyway... I see nothing wrong with it, but I can see where some are upset. I have to stick up for a fellow Bronx girl because we are all guilty of saying the terminology, black people refer to Puerto Ricans as "N****" and vice versa... it is a term of endearment whether we like it or not.

I think Starr and Buck are being hypocritical because they don't like her. Why? Because PR artists like Fat Joe, Big Pun, the Beatnuts, Cypress Hill, and Cubans like Cuban Link have all used the word freely in their lyrics, and there was never an uproar. So why does J-Lo get the hate?
Its a vile word, and I hate it when I hear my people say it. We should never accept the lowest from anyone else, and we most certainly should not accept from each other. If that word is fair game, then what isn't?? I'd like to take what TOA said a step further though. the word (yuck) nigger comes directly from the Latin "niger"- so it has always referred to Black people regardless of education. The whole "ignorant person" thing came later, when whites would call each other that. Basically, meaning "you are as stupid as a Black person." But if its okay for Blacks to say it, those with a ghetto pass to say it, then why can't everyone in the United States be allowed to say it? And it doesn't always mean "wassup"--as all words, the context can change the connotation. But the denotation doesn't change. Really, I'd like to ask proponents of the word..What really do you gain? |
I agree with you 100% Red6.

There are some differing, yet interesting and valid points being made. I do agree that we as black folk have been using the word for so long that it's hard to imagine it going away. However I don't think that's any reason for us to stop trying. I for one am guilty of using the word more often than I am proud of. At the same time, I do feel it's something different when I hear it from my best friend than when I hear it from a policeman or professor (not that I ever have, but I'm just saying.) I think that J.Lo is being chastised in the black community because people like Starr and Buckwild don't feel she has the all important "street cred" required to be considered "down". Fat Joe, Big Pun and the other artists perceptively and correctly listed by straightBOS on the other hand do. Just more hypocrisy, which is basically what urban music has come to be indicative of. In a perfect world this word would no longer be used by black, white, green, purple or blue people, but the truth is that for every homeboy on the corner using it to address his boys, there's a CEO of a major company using it at the dinner table with his family. It's a tough issue, but I am willing to say that J.Lo has no right to use it. Reading these posts has made me see the pain and hurt it still causes for so many people, and she does not have any right whatsoever to contribute to that because she has no stake in our community. perhpas Starr should have been more concerned with starting a letter writing campaign to the record lables of Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Master P, Ja Rule, DMX, Sisqo, Alicia Keys, Chante Moore...all artists who use this word on their CD's so that other artists such as J.Lo won't be tempted to do the same in the future.
|
I agree, let's see if we can write to all the rappers and make them stop saying it! It only takes one voice...
I think J.Lo gets slammed now because she now appeals to the white audience. When she first came out, she was "selena". Now she chasing after a angel in "angel eyes" she has crossed over(just like beyonce, have you noticed that she looks more blond lately?)and when you cross over, you get more flak cause point blank, we see you too dang much. Big Pun and others are ones that most consider "true to hip hop" and are respected as such. So that why you didn't hear the big hoopla over them. In a recent comparison, Salem Hayek won over Jennifer Lopez as most beautiful, because the people questioned said she was "more hispanic looking" than J.Lo. So crossing over can be a blessing and a curse(Hammer was proof of that, lol) QTE |
i got this on CollegeClub and wanted to share:
Jennifer Lopez is under fire for using the N-Word in her new single, “I’m Real.” The controversial track contains the line: "People are always asking me what's up with so and so. I tell those n----s mind their business, but they don't hear me, though." ~ The tune “I’m Real” was written by Ja Rule and producer Irv Gotti, both of whom are black. ~ Star & Buckwild, the morning team at Hot 97 in New York, slammed J-Lo on the air after playing “I’m Real.” They urged listeners to phone Jennifer’s record label, Epic, and complain. They even told folks to express their outrage to Jennifer’s sister, Linda Lopez, who’s a news anchor at the WB station in New York. ~ Star (real name is Troi Torain) used a racial slur to slam J-Lo on the air; she called Jennifer and a "rice-and-bean-eating bitch" and "common Bronx trash." Star continued her racist retaliation off the air calling Jennifer a “spick princess.” Star went on to say, "I'm sure a lot of young Spanish kids use the N-word, but when you reach her level — a level where you have a platform — why is she using a word that's derogatory to blacks? If you're a so-called role model, don't spit in the face of African-Americans." ~ Star thinks J-Lo used the N-word to try to get street credibility (to earn her “ghetto pass”). But Star said that Lopez should stay “on the pop side of the tracks” and “stop trying to be down with the ‘hood.” Turner’s Two Cents: J-Lo was way out of line, but so are the black artists who throw the N-word around in their music. The sad and sick reality is that using the N-word has, in fact, become a way to get “street credibility.” So has cursing, glorifying drug and alcohol abuse, calling women out of their names and dressing, taking and acting like a thug. Once rappers started using the N-word in public, and started treating it like a badge of honor, they opened up the way for non-blacks to use the word in public, also. Star is right for being angry, but she is wrong for using racially degrading terms like “rice and bean eating bitch” and “spick princess.” Racial slurs are always wrong and two wrongs can never make a right. Star lost the moral high ground by allowing her anger to drag her down to the same level she was speaking out against |
Quote:
Yeah, I think if Mariah Carey used the N word, her white fans would feel alienated and her black fans would feel uncomfortable. I would definitely feel uncomfortable if Mariah used the term b/c I don't think she identifies with the black community outside of her music career. Nonetheless, it can appear a bit hypocritical if we have rappers running around "nigga this nigga that," and telling J-Lo the word is unacceptable. Afterall, is it supposed to be a "black thing," or an ignorance thing. |
Quote:
It would be great if artists stopped using the term because some concerned citizens decided to write. But, in all reality, many artists find nothing wrong with using the term. The use of this term in songs often makes artists and songs more appealing to the HUGE audience of blacks who use the term all day everyday. Music is affected by what's going on around us and vice versa. If there is a big campaign against the N word in our communities AND IN THE STREETS (where I hear it all the time) MAYBE the artists will feel more self conscious when they use it. If they are not made to feel self conscious by listeners, a few letters won't stop the flow of the dough or the use of the term. |
LAWD!
See, she shouldn't of called J.Lo that! It irritates me that she said the N word, but damn don't call her a rice and bean eating bitch! The point she is trying to make is now null and void if she said that! I heard Star said that to Puffy on the air while he was doing an interview on how he still care for her. I'm glad she ain't with puffy no more and that's real! QTE |

I understand where you're coming from with that one, but I still think the use of it is wrong. If you're down with me, then you should also understand how offensive that word is to me & respect me enough not to use it. I had a friend (white) once that used to freely use that word. She mainly hung around African Americans & thought she was "down" enough to say n***@ in the same context as when we say it. Yes, I went off. And yes, she stopped (at least in my presence), but she could never understand why it offended me so badly when she said it. I haven't heard J'Lo's song, but I will try to see if I can. And if someone has that address, I will gladly mail my complaint (otherwise, I'll research it). |
Quote:
I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY with a lot of what you say, but I just have to say that ain't no white person CONVINCE US that the word nigger was somehow positive, or that we should use it. Every white person who has ever used it has known exactly what they meant, just like the people they saiud it too, and I GUARANTEE none of them were thinking it meant "my fine upstanding African-AMerican citizen". I think that's something we need to take the blame for, and now it's biting us in the butt because how in the Hell are we going to protest over J-Lo when some of us use it every other word to NO COMMENT from the rest of us? I didn't see any campaigns started when R. kelly used that word damn near 100 times in the remix of I Wish, so why are we so hot and bothered about J. Lo? |
Hey Ivy,
We have all heard the saying two wrongs do not make a right, and if we are trying to get our own people to quit saying it, then we shouldn't let other races do it either. I am offended because nigga is a word used to insult black people, so if black people using the word offends you, then it should with j.lo also. Has J.Lo responded to this yet? |

And I also feel that everyone who is outraged over J-Lo is not bothered by Foxy Borwn or Puffy saying it. They are of a "this is our word to use" mentlity. Personally I think that there is a distinction betweena black person and a person of nother race using the word. BOth are wrong but for differnt reasons. When a peson outside of my race says it it carries with it a layer of oppressiona dn history that I do not perceive when it comes from a Black person. When a Black person says it it reflects internalization of that hatred and history and an ignorance to the depth of the matter. Both are out of line to me but for different reasons. |
Hi soror:
See now you opened a can of worms..."what is black"! I figure if you have an ounce of African blood flowing through your veins you are BLACK regardless of what your exterior covering may portray (light skin, straightish hair, keen features...etc.) Black is both what is in your heart and veins. But I digress. I think the "N" word is deplorable regardless of who uses it and that is why I am working on moving away from using the word. It doesn't sound cute coming out of your mouth anyway. As far as listening to it in music.. until black folks stop using it who are we to dictate who can or can not use it? We will be major hypocrites. Quote:

Think yall. |

Actually, I do occasionally hear other ethnic groups use racial "slurs" in referrence to one another. I have heard white people call eachother "honkie" and hispanics call eachother "spic" and "wetback." It doesn't make it right, but I thought I might share that with you. |
I must say regardless of the word, I like the song.

as usual i am late repsonding to this.
i dislike the word so much myself and i admit i have used it in my time. people (my black folxs) use it when guards are down and the situation is relaxed. we use to for comaradry (sp?) i am not saying that this is right. i was talking to one of my friend who as he says is str8 from the streets... as he taxed the word nigga as "never ignorant getting goals accomplished" see how black folxs turn some negative in some postive. my whole thing is...don't jump on one person jump on them all. what makes her (j-lo) so dfferent then say nwa, tru, the whole wu-tang clan, i don't know one rapper that doesn't use the word nigga beside will smith. |
J. Lo Takes Heat For Use Of The 'N' Word
Superstar actress-singer Jennifer Lopez is under fire for the usage of the word "n--ga" in her latest song, "I'm Real" featuring Ja Rule. The song is currently Number 26 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. Lopez, who is of Puerto Rican decent, was called out for her use of the word by New York radio hosts Star and Buc Wild of WQHT-FM, who are planning to protest during Lopez's Friday morning (July 13) performance at NBC's Today Show Summer Concert Series. This is the closest thing to a story in a major source I could get--this is from USAtoday.com. Last night I was up late and happened to catch this movie called "Boriqua Bond" on HBO. I thought how timely it was that this movie was on because it showed me that PR's are very similar to black people culturally. I mean, they are just like us...from the varying degrees of skin color they may have to the way that they speak. And I'm sure they interact with black people more consistently than any other nonblack group of people. If J.Lo is wrong for using the "n" word, it's for the same reasons that Ja Rule is wrong for using it. Because nobody should. she is not wrong for being Puerto Rican and saying it. |
