Do you have a job?

We all like a little spending money in college.... Are you working part time or hitting up your parents?

Personally, I do a little of both. I make some money tutoring Chemistry and Math on campus and some working at Jimmy John's. Other than that, I make the monthly run home for some money from the parents.

When I was in college I worked at least part time, and was right around 40 hours a week by my senior year. I started out working in the school library and ended up as a preschool teacher at a daycare by the time I graduated.

I tried a job for a little while, but my parents made me quit because they did not want me to be distracted.

I worked 2 parttime jobs through college, one at the college bookstore, and the other rotated-- one semester I was a student assistant, another I was a nanny, a resident assistant at off-campus apartments and another I worked in retail. Eventually, I wised up, quit and started waitressing. More money in less time.

I wish my parents had given thought to me being "distracted" by work. I had to twist their arms just to sign the financial aid paperwork so I could get my loans on time to pay for classes.

How was that for you? I finished that book "The Nanny Diaries" recently and the main character found that her parttime nanny job quickly took over her life. Is it really so bad?

I don't work a "Real job" in school, but I get paid as a photographer for the paper and I'm applying for an editor position. I'm also a notetaker in some of my classes.

At home I work at the YMCA as a Lifeguard and at the Three Rivers Rowing Association as a rowing coach. I also am a freelance photographer.

I love that book!

No, my experience was nothing like that! I was more like an after-school babysitter for three little boys. I took them to Little League, doctor's appointments, etc., and played with them after-school, helped with homework, etc. Their parents were super-nice people!

Just wondered if these were for the same "children."

I worked for the university TV station and two radio stations when I was in college.

Later, I worked for the University TV station during the week and the NBC affilliate 75 miles away on weekends.

I've had a couple of jobs while in school. All through high school and my first summer home I worked at an Aftercare/Summer Day camp at my old grade school. Crap went down, the people I had worked for "went away" and I quit! My sophomore year I worked in the mall personalizing Christmas ornaments in Oct-Dec. Then I worked at an "Early Learning Center" i.e. day care from Januaray to August. Now, I get to work with the big kids, cause I'm at a lawyers' office answering phones and whatnot... pays better and smells a little better than the lil babies!(But I do miss all my little kids... they are a LOT sweeter than the crazy people I deal with on the phone everyday!)

I worked throughout college. As an adult, it just feels weird living off my parents..

LOL, now I feel like I'm posting my college resume

no, I was a student assistant for the foreign lang dept. I got to coordinate marketing for the study abroad programs, which was fun! I was an afterschool nanny for 3 boys, age 2-10.

In college I worked at a child care center beginning my freshman year. By the time I graduated I was the assistant director and the financial manager. It was a great job. Since I was the "assistant boss" I could basically take off anytime I wanted to which was a huge perk since sorority time requirements can be tough during times Greek Week and Homecoming.

ADqtPiMel 12-21-2004 08:03 PM

I work 30 hours a week as a pool manager at the campus Rec Center.

IowaStatePhiPsi 12-21-2004 08:05 PM

Spring semester I will be working 30+ hrs a week while taking 18 credits, an R credit, actively involved in 3 stuorgs besides Phi Psi.

For the most part, my parents completely support me. They're awesome! They tell me all the time that I have the rest of my life to work, so enjoy it now while I don't have to, but if i want a job I can have one as long as my grades don't suffer. However, I feel bad that they do so much for me, so I do earn some of my own money by cleaning apartments in my apartment complex sometimes. I would love to get a job in my field of study (x-rays), but this past semester I couldn't handle it with sorority and classes. I have been looking here lately though.

My freshman year, I worked at the DC (Dining Commons) for spending money. Then my sister-mother in AGD got me an awesome job as a campus operator. I worked mainly weekends, which were slow at the switchboard and could do homework when it was slow. Once in the Occupational Therapy program, I added on a job as a rehab aide in a group for closed head injured adults. I worked both jobs for a little less than a year, then went to just the rehab aide job as I made more money there, worked more hours and got great pre-OT/resume building experience. The last semester of my senior year, my dad said "You've been working hard for a long time and your brother is done with school, take the semester off from working and we'll give you money". That was soooooooo awesome. I did all that while maintaining a high GPA to keep my academic scholarship and he was proud :)
