Christmas movies

What's your favourite movie that airs during the holiday season?

Even though it isn't technically a holiday movie, I have to say that I LOOOOOVVVVVEEE The Sound of Music. I think CTV has aired it around Christmas every year for the past decade or so. I don't really know what the movie has to do with Christmas, though. My mom seems to think that the concert at the very end was a Christmas concert, but I was under the impression that it was the Salzburg Festival.

Every year in grade school we were always forced to watch that stupid Christmas Story movie. I'm sorry, I've never been a fan of it and never will. Puts me to sleep every time.

I don't know why, but I love love love Home Alone and the Preacher's Wife.

Merry Christmas, you filthy animal.

Is that the movie with the boy who wants a bb gun? I really like that movie.

I like Miracle on 34th Street with Maureen O'Hara and Natalie Wood, Charlie Brown Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, White Christmas, A Christmas Carol, and Babes in Toyland.

I really like all sorts of Christmas movies.

For some reason I equate the Sound of Music with Easter.

I thought that I might bring this topic back, since it's getting close to Christmas: Here's my favorites:

-National Lampoon's Chrsitmas Vacation (the squirrel coming out of the tree was funny)
-A Christmas Story
-The Santa Clause 1 and 2
-Miracle on 34th Street (1994 version, okay I'm biased because I was born in '82)
-Home Alone 1 and 2 (3 was okay, but 4 was god awful)
-Christmas Every Day

Non Movie Specials on TV:
-Claymation Christmas (someone please put it back on the air)
-A Garfield Christmas
-A Charlie Brown Christmas
-California Raisins Christmas
-How the Grinch Stole Christmas
-A Flintstone Christmas

I haven't seen:
The Gathering
Bad Santa
Elf

And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them! And they were so afraid ... And the angel said unto them, "Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all my people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ, the Lord."

"And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly Host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, and good will toward men."

"That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown."

Tell me...does that not tug at the heartstrings every year?

I agree. Especially when Mike gets trapped in that collapsed building and they flashback to when Cindy was still cute and how she asked Santa Claus to give Carol her voice back so she could sing 'O Come All Ye Faithful' and then next thing you know everyone in the lot is singing that song.

And then Mike somehow manages to get out of the rubble. Very Brady ending.

I still have that movie on the original tape it was taped on in 1988.

I am in a puddle of tears by the end, every darn year!!

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (I honestly think it was taken directly from my childhood- especially the "Hallelujah!")
The Sound of Music
Home Alone I (hate the others)
It's A Wonderful Life
A Christmas Story ("you'll shoot your eye out, kid!")
Young Messiah

ELF

aabby757 10-30-2005 10:33 PM

I love Elf. I love Eloise at Christmas or whatever it's called. I love love love A Very Brady Christmas. I love The Santa Claus.

Anything that takes place in NYC so Home Alone is on that list too.

Though I just love Christmas movies in general so anything contempory and sweet. The snowier the better.

Only 56 more days until Christma!!!

Ho ho ho.

Babes in Toyland

Rollergirl2001 10-31-2005 05:06 PM

I forgot about A Very Brady Christmas and Jingle all the Way. The girl who subbed for Susan to play "Cindy" did a better job that Geri with "Jan".

The lady who played Jan in A Very Brady Christmas was Eve Plumb, who played her on the original series. I am pretty sure that only Cindy's character was recast for that one.

I really thought I was the only person in the world who loved that movie. :)

Definitely:

Charlie Brown Christmas
A Christmas Story
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the cartoon and the Jim Carey version)
It's a Wonderful Life
National Lampoon's Christmas

..... Ok so apparently just about everything that people have said so far.

The all time best though is White Christmas. Ever since I was a little girl, my grandmother would watch that movie together, just the two of us either while we decorated the tree or on Christmas Eve after everyone went to bed. I loved that because it was a special time for just us two, and because it was something that she did with my dad when he was little. :) Aww, this is getting me ALL ready for Christmas.

The house where it was filmed used to be owned by one of the members in my SAI alumnae chapter. Back in the day they used to hold our annual Christmas party at her house.

Kevlar281 10-31-2005 07:10 PM

To go along with my original post of Die Hard, I saw Gremlins on TV this morning, another great Christmas movie.

Clarification:
The fake Jan was used in the Brady Bunch Variety Hour. The reason why Susan Olsen couldn't do the Xmas version was because she was on her honeymoon. Jennifer Runyon played "Cindy" in the Christmas version.

Ahhh! Gotcha. And I didn't know that the reason Susan couldn't do the Christmas special was because she was on her honeymoon. That's much better than thinking that she just didn't want to do it.

Thanks for clearing it up!! :)

A Christmas Story.

We always every Christmas Eve sit down as a big family and all watch Ralphie and Randy. No matter how many times we see it, we all laugh and love it.

It has some great holiday memories so I love that one.

I also LOVE Earnest Saves Christmas. Great one.

KSigkid 11-01-2005 09:12 PM

A Christmas Story
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
It's A Wonderful Life
Christmas in Connecticut (or something like that...can't remember the exact name)

My dad is a huge fan of Christmas movies, so there are others I'm forgetting.

ADPiShannan 11-02-2005 08:55 PM

I guess A Christmas Story's house was here in Cleveland. A guy bought it off ebay and he moved here. He plans to restore it to how it was in the movie and make it into a shrine and a museum to go walk through. I guess he got in contact with a few people from the movie and was able to get some of the stuff from the set to put into the house.

Man noone else has seen Earnest Saves Christmas? Or do I just have a wierd sense of humor lol?

ZTABullwinkle 11-02-2005 10:48 PM

Since I was raised that Christmas isn't talked about till Santa arrives at Macy's at the end of the parade....I will hold my favorites till then. But isn't it a wee bit early to be talking about Christmas? I still have Halloween candy to eat in my apartment! ;)

neonsparkles 11-06-2005 01:18 PM

Well it is early but I loooooooove Christmas :)

Anyway I like the movies already mentioned but my absolute FAVORITE is "Yes Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus"

I haven't seen it in years and years though

AXiD Sweetie 11-09-2005 01:02 AM

It's just not Christmas until I watch 'A Christmas Story'. We bought the VHS for my daddy, but we don't watch it at all, we only watch it when it's on tv...
No one could believe that I had never watched "The Grinch" or the Charlie Brown Christmas movie until last year. Both were pretty good too!

AXOeva 11-09-2005 12:30 PM

White Christmas
A Christmas Story
A Muppet's Christmas Carol

It's in the singing of a street corner choir
It's going home and getting warm by the fire
It's true Wherever you find love
It feels like Christmas
A cup of kindness that we share with another
A sweet reunion with a friend or a brother
In all the places you find love
It feels like Christmas
It is the season of the heart
A special time of caring
The ways of love made clear
It is the season of the sprit
The message if we hear it
Is make it last all year
It's in the giving of a gift to another
A pair of mittens that were made by your mother
It's all the ways that we show love
That feel like Christmas
A part of childhood we'll always remember
It is the summer of the soul in December
Yes, when you do your best for love
It feels like Christmas
It is the season of the heart
A special time of caring
The ways of love made clear
It is the season of the sprit
The message if we hear it
Is make it last all year
It's in the singing of a street corner choir
It's going home and getting warm by the fire
It's true, wherever you find love
It feels like Christmas
It's true, wherever you find love
It feels like Christmas

BetteDavisEyes 11-09-2005 04:36 PM

A Christmas Story is the best!

Miracle on 34th Street (the original w/Natalie Wood)

The Mickey Mouse version of A Christmas Carol b/c I enjoyed it as a child & still enoy it now.

I may be one of few people in the world that loathes It's A Wonderful Life. I hate that damn movie.

Senusret I 11-09-2005 06:44 PM
