Who has had homemade ice cream before?
Who had the actual maker? What color was yours?

Here we reminisce on the magical wonders of rock salt. :D


I had some this summer for my birthday. :D

We had one growing up with a blue base thingy. My daddy used to make it for us.

My cousin's grand-ma made the best homemade ice cream ever. Using rock salt, and a blue bucket with a large crank on the top, Sis. Tennyson (RIP) made magic!! :)

As I told some "cool" friends recently, I was in Walmart and saw the bucket with the crank, and for a minute thought I was going to do it myself. But then I was like, "playa, you can't even funk with the way Sis. T put it down." So sanity returned and I just live with the tasty memories...

...but if somebody is making some, call me!

yeah, we had several ice cream machines. All of my relatives did. That's all they made "back in the day". Store bought what? You betta get outta dodge with that!

We were "big time" when we got an electic maker. My grandmother said the ice cream wasn't as good as the "crank" machine. :rolleyes:

One of my aunts had a recipe where you did NOT have to cook your custard.

I haven't had hommade ice cream in yearssssssssss. Blue Bell AND Borden's Brown Velvet home made vanilla ALMOST have home made beat. :o

One of our machines was organe with the white motor thing on top. Another one was a brown color with the black crank. Another one had like a wooden exterior with a black crank. LOL @ crank! :p

The one my mom's best friend used to have is very similar to the one at the top. Homemade vanilla ice cream was the bomb on a hot summer day!!

This is similar to the one my mom used. She used to break that bad boy out every time we begged to go to the ice cream truck. That was some gooddddddd icecream. She was cranking that bad boy so hard and fast I thought her arm was going to fall off.

Wowwwwwwww I wonder if persuasion will work. Maybe I can get some for Christmas. We have plenty of rock salt. :D

Ooh we have homemade Ice Cream every family reunion and everyone fights over it too..my great uncle and grandmothers are the makers and I think they have upgraded to an automatic but I can remember the crank kind...

My mom used to fix it when I was little. She didn't use an ice cream maker. She just mixed up the ingredients and poured it in a ice cube tray and let it froze. It tasted pretty good.

Mmmmm. I have such fond memories of homemade ice cream. My mommy hooked it up in her brown ice cream maker.


She bought an electric one a few years ago. She says it's not the same.

My Aunt Mamie made the best homemade ice cream. Down in Mississippi, when my cousins and I spent the summer with my grandmother, she would come over, with that brown wood ice cream maker, with the steel churner on top and whip up the best ice cream. I used to love watching her and helping her make it outside. That stuff was so great.

Now my great-grandmother (God, rest her soul after the age of 106) made some good ice cream, too. The only difference was hers wasn't as smooth as my aunt's.

Man, I miss those days.

We have it every year at our family b-b-q mother's day weekend. My aunt makes it. Her churn is like the second pic. I have to admit, I would've stopped going to the gathering long ago had it not been for the homemade ice cream. Even now, I will call to see if she's made the ice cream before I leave the house.

ooh! I had homeade ice cream last October at an alumnae ice-cream social, simply delicious. It was made from an electric machine though. In our house growing up we had an electric one as well. BUT at girl scout camp and church in the summers, we used to make it with the crank and rock salt. I think all the hard work makes it taste "better." :)

Goshdangit yall, I came from a poor family but I have NEVER had any homemade ice cream--now yall got me yearnin' for some. And I can imagine how good it is.

*looks at watch* About 3 hours left in the workday. I'ma havta call Mom and see if she can make me some homemade ice cream.

Here's what you do: Tell your family to celebrate the new arrival of baby MSJ (I almost typed MSG, LOL) there should be something new in your lives and then coax them to make the ice cream.:)

what's funny is we celebrate with BBQ!!!! If I asked for homemade ice cream, they'd all look at me and say "You better go get some Blue Bell or Braum's and shut up!" :(

*dials favorite Aunt on speed dial* We have an emergency. One of my Sorors has never had homemade ice cream. Yes. I know. Not a real childhood without it :p

I still make ice cream in an old wooden cream freezer! Sometimes I throw some strawberries or fresh peaches in the partially frozen custard and OMG, it is the best stuff that you will ever taste!

If you can't get you some homemade ice cream, try this:

3 scoops of orange sherbert
2 scoops of rainbow sherbert (or pineapple sherbert)

a half a thing of orange juice
a quarter thing of Tahitian treat (soda pop- I think it's national)

Ice cubes or crushed ice.

Put it in the blender for 3-5 minutes ....now that will get you right!!

(and don't yall act like you don't know what "half a thing" or a "quarter thing" is either.) :)

I know you got some relative in the COUNTRY. If not, you can borrow mine. :) Make plans to be in the backwoods of Georgia with me the weekend before the 1st Monday in August.

Ahhh, the memories of the rock salt and the churning. I thought about buying one of the new fangled modern ice cream makers, but wondered if it would be the same.

Oh what wonderful memories I have of my mom making strawberry ice cream every summer. She calls it her ice-cream social. Good food, great company and lots and lots of ice cream. Every 2nd Saturday in August, this august event occurs. I can't wait for it to happen this year. Yummmy!!!

I must be a heathen... my elders just cooked and baked... no one made ice cream.... But I have had Blue Bell cause they are finally selling them in our city.... there is a place here called Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen, but I have never been there....

You know Food Network had a special about Ice Cream on last night, lol!! And as sleepy as I was, I watched the whole thing!! Anyway, of course they had to talk about the Homemade Ice Cream!! I remember my mom and I made some at least five times when I was younger. I swear you learn something new every day but apparently they have a ball that you can shake and play with to make ice cream...I was like "WOW"!! If I find a link, I'll post it!! yummmmmmmmmmmmmyyyyyyyy....ai remember it was orange, mai grandfather made it for us...of course ai paid close attention to everything he was doing, and it tasted that much better than any store bought brand that ai had ever tried before, then and after.:):p:p:p:p:D:rolleyes:
