Pedro to the Mets
It's being reported that Pedro has signed a 4 year $56M deal with the Mets today.

Woo Hoo!!!
It'll be another 1,043 years until the Red Sox win another World Series, but just a few more for my Mets!
|
I wouldn't have paid that much for him but thats the mets for ya.

Not a huge surprise, what with Minaya practically drooling over Pedro since the signing period started. The Yankees were never really serious contenders, and Boston wasn't going to give him the guaranteed fourth year.
The Mets overpaid, but hopefully for them his mind and his body are healthy. Pitchers are definitely the winners so far in the free agent season; Benson, Ortiz and Martinez have all made out well, better than expected. |

All three pitchers got INSANE amounts of money. Benson doesn't look like a 30th-round pick anymore, not to mention the 1st-round worldbeater he was foretold to be. The Mets are in bad bad bad bad bad shape, and the d-backs aren't far behind. |

Jerry Colangelo is probably sitting back laughing his ass off at this offseason. |

I would pay russ ortiz to pitch . . . for a rival. DON'T YOU FUCKERS LOOK AT PERIPHERAL STATS?!?!?!? holy crap ortiz sucks. he's a derek lowe but w/out playoff history . . . win/loss rates don't matter when you strike out like 3.1 guys per 9. He sucks. and how does jaret wright get $27mil? unreal. Now I know how idiots like Dusty Baker keep their job . . . no one reads the paper, or pays any attention really at all. simply stunning. |

I'd say it's just further proof that leo mazzone is crazy sick . . . but you should NEVER sign his guys. Chris Hammond anyone? |

As a Mets fan, ok... I guess I'm happy.
As long as he doesn't turn out to be a big flop just like some other players the Mets have taken in recent years. |
As a Mets fans I say the Sox can keep him! As a Sox fan I say the Mets can have him! J/K. Just as long as he's not a Yankee.
Honestly, I just don't see Pedro as an NL pitcher. He can't swing a bat! It's like Al Leiter all over again, but at least Al tries to swing. |

Yeah . . . I'm pretty sure the NL mean batting average for pitchers was like .091, so really the no pitchers can hit. That's why the ones that can are total outliers. The upside is that petey will have to throw to about 11% fewer 'real' hitters in a game, facing the pitcher's spot between 2-4 times a game. Really, he'll be better in the NL, but who knows for how long? He's undergoing a physical this week, but he refused an MRI on the shoulder, which has been known to have a tear for about a year and a half. Minaya has pooped the bed here, and will only continue it if he trades for sosa . . . in his desire to a.) make a splash and b.) stock his team with dominican heroes, both for marketing and playing purposes, he's throwing around money. The Mets are NOT the yankees, they just can't do that - they should really look at themselves more as a mid-market team, until they're consistently filling shea (and making the playoffs). That division sucks, though, so who knows. |
I was watching the Today Show this morning and the Mets Manager said that while he is coming...they still have to make it all official.
