Somebody did suggest one a while back. I forgot who it was,but I think the suggestion was made in this forum. Let me go thur the old threads and if I find it, I'll bring it.
I would love to be in a GC Book Club. Right now, I'm reading One Woman Short by Nelson George. |
http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gifI am down like 4 flat tires! I love to read! And just read "Hot Johnny" and the women you love him! It was awful! And it was actually featured by "Black Expression"!
I read George Nelson's recent book! "Show and Tell" and it was more than I expected! I finished it the same day I started! I also read "One Woman Short" and I thought it was also good! It was a lot different from his early wrintings of "Urban Romance"! See you got me started! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Yes! Let's start a Book Club! ------------------ 22-IN-F99 MISS P.R.I.S.S. |

First decide on a book to read.
Second a date of completion Third a date for discussion and so on ....it can begin like this./.. |
I know this was started almost two years ago, but I would still like to join.
|
Count me in....
Hey guys can I play......
I've been in book clubs an they are alot of fun.....of course face to face discussions are best but this will probably be cool also.....Its always good to have a co-ed club because you can get prospectives from both sides.....maybe when can recruit the few men who are regulars on GC to join...anyway, any suggestions for the first book??????? |
I would also like to participate...I committed myself to reading 9 (all from black expressions) books this summer ....I have 3 left....I would love to read anything you all suggest.....alright.....pick a book.....
|
Reading.....
Is Fundamental!
I love to read and would like to join also. Bring it on! Q |
I would like to be part of a book club as well. Since the first posts are from '01, any suggestions on what to read or when to start?
|
I would also like join. I love to read and right now I am in search of some good summer reading material. Let me know the details.
|
Book Club, Book Club, Book Club!!!
I read at least ten books a month...so let's get this thing rolling! |
I'd love to join a book club. My suggestion for the first book is Married Men by Carl Webber. Has anyone else read this book? All of his books are excellent!!!
|
Count me in as well. As for suggestions on what books to read...how about Brothers and Sisters by BeBe Moore Campbell.

Okay I have an idea for how we can start the book club. Please let me know how you feel.
I say that we start the book club in August. This will give us all more than enough time to buy/find the book. Each month should have a different book leader. She(or he) will be responsible for letting us know at the BEGINNING of the month what book to read. OR she or he can give us a choice of books to read and then as a group we can collectively vote on what book to read. We can then take the two middle weeks of the month to read the book. Discussion of the book can take place during the last week of the month. We can either use this thread as the discussion thread OR start a Book Club on Yahoo!! Everyone, please reply with your thoughts. |
Good Suggestions Gina
Gina,
Thanks for taking the initiative to spearhead this initiative. I know The Professor had began a book club on GC back in 2002 but the ball was dropped. How about just starting a new thread for each book you all read because you never know 2 years from now ;) someone might do some searching and find a thread on a book and bring it back to the top to reignite the flames of discussion. I will be back later with ideas if I have any. I was MIA with company in town. Also JUST A FRIENDLY SUGGESTION, vary your book topics -- fiction, non-fiction, etc. :) |
I wanna join.
But I agree with CT4, can we mix it up a bit and read some non-he say, she say, they say, he done did me wrong, she's out of controll..type books. sorry..I digress:rolleyes: |
I'm game for reading almost anything. Does anyone have suugestions on the first book? My nod goes to E. Lynn Harris' new book. I believe it comes out this week or next week.
|
1BrownGirl, I read Baby Mama Drama also. That was a good read, too. I can't wait for the new one that comes out in Jan. 2004.
Another good book that I'd like to suggest for the first one is EJDickey's Liar's Game. Its a real good read. Also, lets decided who is going to lead each month. That can make things a lot smoother in deciding the first book... |
I agree...
a monthly leader would be good...that way everyone would get a chance to pick a book....I also agree that we shouldn't just read the typical "AA fiction paperbacks" ya know "Baby Mama this, Cheatin that.....I'm an avid reader but I try to read books with a little more substance also....authors like Naylor, Cooper, and Morison.....plus non-fiction is also good....so who's going to be the first leader???? (whoever mentioned E. Lynn's new book...thats a good choice!!!)

Some More Friendly Suggestions:
1. Form a committee of folks to get lay the foundation. The committee needs to decide on various genres to be read. 2. Committee asks for all interested participants to let them know. From interested participants, gather a list of leaders. Some months, you might have more than one leader. 3. Monthly leaders need to lead titillating book discussions. They ask probing questions. Not, who was your favorite character and why ONLY but questions like IF YOU HAD TO HAVE A CONVO with Zora from Disappearing Acts at any point in the story what would you have told her? *former English teacher speaking here* 4. Participants need to PARTICIPATE. 5. Set ground rules for discussions, i.e. respecting folks' opinions. 6. Have fun; also what I would suggest: say that for August you read Family by J. California Cooper; the leaders should suggest other titles similar to Family like Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs, Our Nig by Harriet Wilson, etc. 7. Have titles that men would like to read as well. I highly recommend a planning committee for organization and less headache. :) |
hmmm CT4, have you done this kinda stuff before :D
|
CT4, you seem to have the whole planning committee thing locked DOWN...
Are you going to be busy as to where you can't head this book club? Since you already have what to do in mind, I think that you would be a great person to head this up. |
Thanks Im_Just_Me for your flattering words. :)
I have been a part of several book clubs and of course am an AVID READER. :) I do not want to HEAD the committee or what not, I see that others in this thread would be a valuable part of the book club planning and implementation. I just don't want to see the book club sit idle for months with tons of "ooh let's do this" and very little action. A lot of great ideas have been born, but no one actually taking ideas and putting them into place. Everyone keeps reading the thread and saying what books they want to read, but very few have offered to put together a definite plan or what not. If any more assistance is needed, please let me know. I definitely will contribute to convos about book of month, but I think others are just as qualified to put together a GC Book Club that won't fall by the wayside after one month. |
I usually dont have anything to add to these threads because my favorite genre is sci-fi, but I recently had this book given to me and LOVED it. Just wanted to suggest a book to you readers:
THe No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. The book is set in Botswana and the protagonist is the most amazing black African woman..... it was a great read that just raised questions about the author... |
Count me in!

Very, Very Interested
Hello all,
I am relatively new to posting but I also LOVE to read and would love to hear others opinions and comments about different books. I am interested in being on the committe to help get this thing started. Everyone has a lot of great ideas about the direction of this book club and if we put our heads together we can come up with something concrete so we can get this started ASAP, hopefully in August. What I suggest is that everyone who is interested in organizing the book club, etc. meet on AOL, MSN, or Yahoo (whichever is best for everyone) and come to some concrete desicions. I suggest a group of 5-7 people at first, that way if there is a disagreement then there will always be someone to break the tie and if the group of people is smaller then it will be easier to come to definate decisions. If this sounds okay to everyone, I suggest we get on this ASAP, I'm thinking all those who want to be apart of the planning team can meet on Sunday, bring ideas and start hashing things out. Let me know what you think.... |
I'd like to be on the committee as well. Just let me know when and where to meet and I'll be there!:)
|
***ATTENTION***
I am forming a committee for the GC Book Club. I would like the initial committee to be no more than nine (9) members. For those who are interested please contact me via PM or IM. My IM name is: headwomaincharge. Please note the spelling.
The first eight people who are interested and IM or PM me by Sunday, July 13th will be in the committee (along with myself). From there we will decide on who can be monthly leaders, books, topics, etc. If you are interested in being a monthly reader please IM or PM me as well. Thanks, Gina |
TTT
Reminder: This is the last day to sign up for the book club commitee!!
|
*bumping*

For those who signed up for the committee can you please email or PM me with your email address so we can begin. I'm trying to get a committee group set up on yahoo.
