Heisman 2004

The Heisman Finalists have been announced

Matt Leinart - USC
Reggie Bush - USC
Jason White - OU
Adrian Peterson - OU
Alex Smith - Utah

I think its cool that there are 2 OU and 2 USC players and Bush and Smith are high school teammates.

Who's your pick and why?

hottytoddy 12-09-2004 04:17 PM

I'd probably pick either Adrian Peterson or Matt Leinhart.

With that being said...Adrian Peterson has 3 more years to win the Heisman--and I know a freshman has never won. I wouldn't pick Jason White because I'm not 100% convinced that he should've been the winner last year..much less two years in a row. Just my .02.

OrigamiTulip 12-09-2004 04:30 PM

The kid from Utah should win. Why? Because the other guys aren't even good enough to be narrowed down as the sole representative of thier team.

DeltaSigStan 12-09-2004 04:48 PM

Reggie Bush is arguably the best player in the nation IMO, but I hope the spoiled children don't get to celebrate a Heisman winner.

Matt Leinart is a good QB in a great system, but not worthy of winning the Heisman.

Whatever, I hope daddy's money compensates for whatever losses the spoiled children take during the bowl season.

Kevin 12-09-2004 05:08 PM

I would love for Peterson to win it, then show Archie up by winning it 3 years in a row.

Or White.. Someone statistically better than Leinart who has played better pass defenses. I'm not picky.

Hey, or give it to Leinart... There's been an amazing trend of Heisman winners losing their championship games recently. Why stop now?

You amuse me.

Don't hate us cause you ain't us. ;) lol

I am not sure who I feel is going to win it, actually. The race seems wide open to me. I think Peterson and Bush have a slight edge on the rest of them though.

DeltaSigStan 12-09-2004 06:48 PM

Haha, I know there are those Trojans that actually made it to SC without fitting that stigma....

You get those at any school, really. SDSU has a lot of those too...........

Yeah I think it So Cal in general a lot of the times. :)

White's numbers are the best, and more than solid compared to his Heisman-winning season last year. This should be a no-brainer, but stunningly people still think Peterson is the key to that offense. Peterson is a stud, no doubt, but honestly, White deserves it.

All are deserving, although Bush is more of a 'swiss-army knife' than a great football player. He's an unreal athlete, though, and there's a long history of those players winning the trophy. It'll be pretty interesting to see who takes it down.

KSigkid 12-09-2004 08:53 PM

White has been pretty ridiculous this year, but he's been more under the radar. Guess that's what happens when one of the best freshman ever in college sports happens to be lining up behind you.

I think Leinart is going to win it, but honestly I'm not sure who I would give it to. I would probably vote for White, but it's just too damn close to call.

amycat412 12-09-2004 08:58 PM

White: Jason White is 231-of-354 for 2,961 yards with 33 TDs and 6 INTs.

Leinart: Season Stats -- Matt Leinart is 251-of-377 for 2,990 yards with 28 TDs and 6 INTs. He also has 3 rushing TDs.

Remarkably similar #'s.

I agree that its wide open. And I'd love to see one of the USC guys take it, obviously. But I would not be disappointed to see Peterson, Smith or White, in that order, get it either. They've all had phenomenal years.

JUST IN: Leinart won Walter Camp Player of the Year award. :)

You know--they say that the Hiesman trophy is the Kiss of Death in the NFL. So with that being said...I really don't care who wins. It doesn always mean theat they are guaranteed a successful NFL career.

Very true. Recently few Heisman winners have done anything in the NFL. For every Tim Brown and Barry Sanders there has been a Ron Dayne or Gino Toretta. It's no precursor of NFL success, to be sure.

hottytoddy 12-10-2004 08:13 AM

I was just checking out Heisman.com....I was looking at winners for the past few years and the candidates that were given consideration, but did not win. There are some really successful NFL players that weren't given much consideration. Some of these winners we haven't heard from again...or haven't heard much from. Here are a few that DID NOT win.

This was in 1999, Ron Dayne won that year.
Michael Vick 3rd place
Drew Brees 4rd place
Chad Pennington 5th place
Shaun Alexander 7th place
Thomas Jones 8th place

In 1998 Ricky Williams (winner)
Donovan McNabb - 5th place
Duante Culpepper - 6th place
Champ Bailey - 7th place

1997 Charles Woodson winner
2nd - Peyton Manning
4th Randy Moss

While most of these winners have had decent NFL careers ..the ones who go on to become the big shots aren't always the winners. And I realize that there's no way to know how well someone is going to do in the NFL. I also think IMO that players who attend larger schools get more consideration. So truthfully...I don't care who wins...Congrats to them.

So were Oklahoma fans------since the Heisman Trophy winner doesn't ever seem to win the national championship-------GO OU!

AGDLynn 12-11-2004 10:39 PM

Valdosta State wins the Division AA National Championship 2 hours before a USC jock wins the Heisman. Guess which one made the Atlanta Journal website first?

Exactly :D

Matt had a great year. I think Peterson will get it next year, so congrats to Matt. Someone not from OU should have won this year.

Spread the wealth.

It'll be a good game. Better than the superbowl. Way more 1st round draft picks than any two superbowl teams ever will have.

I just hope our boys from flyover country beat the University of Spoiled Children.

KSigkid 12-13-2004 10:45 AM

Congratulations to Leinart and USC. I was surprised at the margin by which he won, as I thought the voting would be much closer. I was also a little surprised that Smith got more votes than Bush; I thought Reggie would get a lot more support than he did.

Either way, I feel it's going to be one hell of a good championship game.

I thought the same of Smith and Bush--but mr. amycat had a good point-- alot of the people that would have voted for Bush, likely put their support behind Leinart. And our AD and 65 Heisman winner Mike Garrett reportedly told Bush in the aftermath "It will be you up here next year."

Even w/ Leinart staying?

PS - why in the hell is Leinart staying??? I mean, i know SF isn't the franchise it used to be, but jesus, they'll still be picking first next season, too . . .

DeltaSigStan 12-13-2004 04:15 PM

Besides, many 49er fans predict the niners will mess up and trade away the pick anyway......
