Kobe Bryant is now MARRIED
 

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lakers star Kobe Bryant finally tied the knot.

Bryant married fiancee Vanessa Laine of Huntington Beach in a private ceremony Wednesday afternoon at St. Edward Roman Catholic Church in Dana Point.

He broke the news to his Lakers teammates before Thursday's practice.

The marriage, following days of speculation, was reported Thursday night by KABC-TV and in The Orange County Register on Friday.

The service took place under a heart-shaped arch with red rose petals strewn on the floor, the Register said.

Laine wore a full-length white dress with a long train and veil. Bryant opted for a dark suit instead of a tuxedo.

About a dozen people were present.

Bryant, 22, got engaged to Laine, then an 18-year-old student at Marina High in Huntington Beach, during last season's playoffs.

He is sporting a diamond-studded silver band on his left ring finger.

I don't think he'll catch any heat. He's not the first pro-athlete to wed outside his race and I don't see wives getting that much attention anyway when it comes to pro sports. Plus, he's in L.A. so no one is probably making a fuss about it. It was probably kept quiet to avoid too much press. I'm more tripped out that the girl is only 18 or 19 as opposed to her being white. H U N T I N G T O N B E A C H, Calif. — A Southern California high school is buzzing with the news that one of its own is engaged to Kobe Bryant, the 21-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star.
Rumors swirled Friday at Marina High School, where TV vans and helicopters flocked after Bryant confirmed he was engaged to marry Vanessa Laine, an 18-year-old student.
At the modest home in Huntington Beach where the fiancee lives with her grandparents, her grandfather sighed heavily as he confirmed the engagement. He also confirmed the rumor that his granddaughter would now be homeschooled and that Bryant and Laine would probably skip the prom in June.
And yes, she is thrilled.
“When you are young, you are very idealistic,” the elder Laine said. “She seems happy.”
Talk also centered on the seven-carat ring Bryant reportedly gave his fiancee.
Seven carats, according to Sandy Fredlund, manager of an Orange County Zales jewelry store, is the size of a nickel, maybe even a quarter, and probably cost about $100,000.
“I was thinking about that ring all the way into work this morning,” Fredlund said. “The largest thing I have in my store is a two-carat. And that’s big. This is huge.”
The couple met when Bryant, who likes rap and videos, stopped by a music video shoot where Laine was working as a background model, said Marina High drama teacher Robert Rotenberry.
Laine, who turned 18 recently, is active in Marina’s theater club but has no aspirations to be a professional actress.

What does that tell you about how her family feels? I agree, she is a bit young (just turned 19), but the real question is who decided to do it so soon-do you think that Kobe was ready for marriage this early or do you think that she put her foot down?

I just hope that it works out for the both of them, because I bet that a lot of people are saying that they won't beat the odds-getting married so young.

I agree, I think that is way to young to get married. I hope there is a pre-nup!

I'm not a big basketball fan cause football is my sport but I'm 20 and I'm in college trying to do the medical school thing and that's tiring enough outside the fact I have a companion who is a preacher. I feel like our lives conflict with each other cause we are two individuals with our own goals. Therefore, there's a lot of sacraficing going on. I'll need some to ourselves time, but I feel the church should come first cause I wouldn't quit med school for him. Basketball is going to be his first love more than likely and I hope she can deal with being at the bottom of the charts when it comes to practice, games, meetings, photo shoots, etc. And I really hope he did get a pre-nup hopefully his parents are smart enough to see that part if he was blind by his lady. But boy a 18-19 year old my goodness, that's too young for such responsibility, but oh well it's them not me.

I think Kobe must have wanted to get married. I mean, what does he have to lose by her putting her foot down? He's making millions of dollars and has a bright career ahead of himself. I head heard the her family actually pressured Kobe to marry her (last season when engagement news broke out) because if not, then they would press charges for statutory rape of the girl as she was underage at the time. This makes the most sense to me. I am not saying Kobe doesn't like/love her but that is a whole lot different than getting married to someone. In my opinion, there needs to be a lot more in place then that. TRUE compatibility, spiritually, intellectually, etc., are essentila to longevity.

Speaking of marriages. I read an article stating that Eric Benet is moving out of Halle's house. He recently moved out for a few days but came back after she pleaded with him. Supposedle she says that he doesn't give her enough attention between the studio (old boy is trying to come out with a hit or he heads to the unemployment line) and his daughter. Also that Halle wants to have his baby real soon but Eric said he was going to wait to see if the marriage worked and make sure his daughter is happy before he agrees.
Eric was also peeved because Halle made a stink about David Justice getting married recently and Eric was like "WHatchoo trippin' fo."

Anyways just a bit of information.

Berry, Husband Sue Over Star Story


LOS ANGELES (AP) - Actress Halle Berry and her musician husband, Eric Benet, have sued the Star tabloid for libel for describing their marriage as ``on the rocks.''

The couple, who wed in January, also accused the tabloid of invasion of privacy and infliction of emotional distress in the lawsuit filed in Superior Court on Wednesday. It seeks $5 million in damages.

In a statement, the couple said the article published last week was ``offensive and baseless'' and that falsehoods contained in it included statements that Benet had ``moved out of Halle's house for a few days'' with their child and ``was looking for a condo of his own.''

Officials with the Lantana, Fla.-based Star did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.
