GeorgiaGirl's Rush Story
Since I picked up my recruitment packet from greek life today I thought that I would go ahead and start my story since I know how many people are addicted to this forum and because it's been pretty slow lately. ;)
The packet made me somewhat nervous. The information sheet really doesn't ask for much information about you. Just your contact information really. The thing that really made me nervous was that there is a huge paragraph about how just because you sign up for informal recruitment doesn't mean you'll even be contacted by any groups. Ok, so here's my background. I came to rush in the fall extremely excited about joining a sorority. I had a terrible experience, not because of the houses or the girls, but for other reasons. I was sick with who knows what which turned into larengitis on the FIRST DAY and lasted for the rest of the week. So here I am, standing in a room trying to talk over 300 girls and I can make almost no sound. It was terrible. I went to the health center and they gave me a prescription that was supposed to bring my voice back but it just dried out my throat and made me cough constantly. I didn't want to ruin someone's skit by coughing all the way through it, so I withdrew from recruitment. I was devistated. This was something that I wanted to do so badly, but I guess it just wasn't the time for me. Now I'm trying again, so wish me luck! Ok, sorry this is so long, but I have one quick question, too. For fall I had recs to 16/18 houses. I put my name on the COB list so do you think that there is any chance that the houses who knew that they would be participating in spring rush would have kept my recs? I would feel so bad about asking people to write me another one, but UGA is so competative that I need recs. Any thoughts? Thanks! GeorgiaGirl  |
Hi, first of all best of luck with your rush! UGA is a great greek system and I hope you find your home. In response to your question there is a good chance that most houses will not still have your rec from the fall but for spring rush there I wouldn't be so concerned about it. It's quite a bit more casual than fall and less competative. Most groups would not have known in the fall whether or not they were going to rush in the spring, it's all a numbers thing that can depend on how many they got in the fall, how many pledges did not initiate, how many graduate in Dec. etc. to determine if they have spots to fill. Hope that helps.

GeorgiaGirl, a lot will depend on the spin you put on Fall Recruitment. If humor is part of your personality, find a funny way to say that you had laryngitis ("There I stood, surrounded by 300 wonderful women, hearing wonderful stories about their sorority, and all I could do was squeak!") or whatever - you know what I mean.
Look at the sorority women in your classes, and talk with the ones in whose sororities you're interested. Let them know you're getting ready to COB. Publicize yourself!! Best of luck to you - and may you stay healthy this time around!! |
zinc and vitamin c are good helps....
stay healthy and happy and the best of luck to you. may the best happen |
Good Luck
and some advice, Be very careful about what you post here on this board. I stress this because chances are that people will remember you. Not in a bad way, but they may remember that you couldn't talk, so I'd just be careful posting your likes and dislikes. I love rush threads, but you don't want to hurt your chances for finding a great home. Hope that kinda made sense. GOOD LUCK!!! |
Thanks so much for the advice!
I definitely realize what a small world it is. I gave away my school with the first couple of posts that I made on this site, so that was no secret but I am planning on making my post very discrete. I will not say which houses are participating or which houses I am attending. I probably will not update every day because it is informal rush and someone could figure out which party I went to by which day of the week it was. I will probably just give a general update every few days to let you know if I got any invites and things like that. Thanks to everyone who has posted for all of their concern and advice. I'm sure that I will be healthy this time around and hopefully I will find my home. UGA has an amazing greek system from what I've seen and I think that I would be happy in most of the houses there. BTW I never told you the dates so here they are. We have a meeting on Jan 25 and then rush events are Jan 26-Feb 2. We will not be finding out which houses are participating until Jan 25, but as I said before, I will not be posting that on here. Happy Holidays! GeorgiaGirl |
good luck

Best of luck!!! Let us know how you are doing as we will all be excited to hear how it goes for you!
|
you might name your houses after something non identifying...candies, cookies, dessert types, tv shows, musicians. stay far away from flowers, animals and colors.
then you can share, if you want to, and while folks can guess, it's often a tougher connect. good luck to you. |
Good luck!

Good luck! :)

I turned in my rush form today so technically I could begin activities any time. I am kind of confused, but on the sheet it said that they sororities can contact you as soon as you turn in your sheet, even though the meeting is not until the 25th. I got a bunch of cute new clothes over the break in all different styles since you never know what you'll be invited to. So I think I'm ready. We don't find out which groups are participating until the 25th so once I find out how many there will be then I'll give them some names.
|
There's never a bad reason to get new cute clothes...! :)
|
OOH, Rush starts tomorrow...I'm so excited there's finally one in GA!
|
So I just got back from the meeting. There are 5 groups participating in spring rush. That does not, however, mean that I will be invited to events at all 5 houses. There are no open parties; they are all invitation only.
I will be naming the houses after my current guilty pleasure: The Desperate Housewives. Bree Gabrielle Edie Susan Lynette While I was at the meeting some sisters of Bree came by my room and left me an invitation to go get ice cream with them tomorrow night. I'll definitely be going to that. I'll be sure to keep you updated! |
great! good luck to you from a fellow bulldog!

I love naming the groups after the Desperate Housewives crew. Lots of luck in your search! |

Good luck! My little transferred to the AXO chapter there :) So did another one of my sisters. Maybe you'll see them! And I love the names
|
So I just got back from having ice cream with Bree. They were all SO nice, and nice in a real way. I felt really comfortable with them the entire time. I'm not really sure that this is where I belong, but they are definitely on my list to continue getting to know.
Tomorrow night I will be attending the basketball game with the girls of Gabrielle. One of my very best friends is in this group so that puts some added pressure on the situation. I'm sure that I will like them though. I'll let you know how it went tomorrow. |
Love the names, too.
Glad to hear that ice cream with Bree went so nicely. Can't wait to hear how the game with Gabrielle goes. Have fun with everything and good luck in your search for a home... |
I'm glad that your event at Bree went well. Hope you have fun at Gabrielle!
p.s. I LOVE Desperate Housewives too! :) |
Tonight I went to the basketball game with the ladies of Gabrielle. It wasn't really the best atmosphere to get to know people, but I had a really good time. I just felt so at ease with these girls. I loved every single one that I met. They are so sweet and genuine. I really hope that they invite me to another event.
Tomorrow night I'm going back to Bree's house for a karaoke night. That should be really fun. I'll update tomorrow. |
Glad your having fun!
|
GeorgiaGirl,
Any updates? We'd love to hear some more! :) |
Oops! Sorry! I completely forgot to update. Karaoke with Bree was so much fun. I could see how well all of the girls got along and how much fun they are to be around. It was really apparent that there are not any little cliques in this sorority (which apparently is a problem at UGA). I think that I could see myself here.
Monday I have been invited to watch the Bachelorette and have ice cream with Gabrielle and to have Chick-fil-A and go on a house tour with Bree. I think that I am going to go to Gabrielle because they have not had as many events and I would like to get to know them a little bit better. I also went on a house tour at Bree during formal recruitment. It doesn't say to RSVP, but should I call Bree and let them know that I am unable to attend their event but that I am still interested? As of now, I am LOVING informal rush. In an ideal world, you would be able to get to know the sororities just as well in the same relaxed environment during formal. I think that I could see myself in either of these groups. I really feel at home with both of them. I'll let you know Monday night how everything goes. |
I think that telling Bree that you are interested but unable to attend is a good idea. I would try to just leave it at not being able to attend, however. If they really push it, don't lie to them, but make sure you emphasize that you are just trying to check out all your options.
|
Oh turning down Chick-Fil-A.....you're breaking my heart!!! :p I agree that you should call Bree and let them know that you won't be able to make it. You want to let them know that you're still interested instead of leaving them hanging when you don't show up.
Good luck tomorrow!!! I'll think of you while I'm working at Chick-Fil-A and while I'm missing the Bachelorette (well that is until i get home and watch it on the DVR). :D |
absolutely send your regrets. it's the non-tacky thing to do.
it sounds neat though for things going this well. good luck. may this be a terrific week. |
How did Monday go? Any new news?!?!
|
it's wednesday thank goodness...but we're getting nervous.
throw us a chocolate, please. |
Sorry it's been a while. I have had an obscene number of tests this week and so I've been studying like crazy. Thank goodness they're all over now.
So I've spent more time at both houses and I think that I know where I belong. Bree is where my heart is. Coming into rush I really thought that I would prefer Gabrielle simply because it is a larger, "more popular" house, but after getting to know the girls, I really love Bree. The girls are amazing and when I'm there I don't feel like I have to put on a show or be something that I'm not. I just feel really comfortable with all of the girls. Also, the girls have really been making an effort throughout the process to email me or send me little notes letting me know how glad they are that I've been coming to their events. I really hope that I get a bid there. TOMORROW IS BID DAY! I pick up my bid at 9:00 and then I get out of class around noon so I'll be sure to get on ASAP and let y'all know how it goes. |
