Hello All GCers:

There is a website that announces the nominees and categories for the BET AWARDS show that airs TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2001 @ 9:00pm EST.

THEN after the awards show we will be hosting THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY III featuring a new category WHAT THE!?!?.

I'd rather not comment right now. I can only imagine what I will see. But I know there will be plenty of the WHAT THE !?!? GOING ON category!!

Here are my choices/predictions for winners in each category:

BEST MALE GROUP:Outkast or Jagged Edge

BEST FEMALE GROUP: Destiny's Child will win although my pick is Mary Mary

BEST MALE R&B ARTIST: JOE (will probably go to R. Kelly) What has Maxwell put out since Fortunate back in 99?

somebody tell me how they are going to nominate the now defunct 702 for ANYTHING?

for the best video of the year, they really nominated some sucky ones. independent women was not a good video, neither was next episode. i didn't understand the ms. jackson video and the stan video is disturbing.

and, they don't have a lot of categories, so i'm hoping they are going to fill in the time with GOOD acts, not folks coming out there singing a piece of every song they ever recorded.

I liked the Stan video. It was disurbing but it reflected the song and the tone very well. It was a better rap song and video than MANY that you hear out there now- certainly better than any in that category! It IS BET though, so my pick in that category is Next Episode. Since we know BET is all about T&A they might as well be honest about it. I mean, Ididn't hear Eminem say Kristal or ice once in that whole song! Shocking I know.

You gotta give the guy props on a song that had an actual point, even if he has a number of screws loose....

You got a point there. The video definitely reflected what he was talking about. Seeing a video like that is so rare these days w/ rap artists. And yes Eminem needs to calm down and talk about something more, um, shall we say happier? I mean yea, he's got issues (who doesn't!?) but dang! We don't need or want to hear about them all the time. Geez!

I think that is definitely the plan. BET is becoming MTV with black people. They have to compete so much more. If you notice that BET had a spring bling...MTV has had the Spring Break for almost 10 years now. BET has that show Testimony...MTV has had the Diary show...that chronicles the lives of such stars as Jay Z, etc. They need to step it up b/c (although she says she loves BET and acknowledges that BET is her root) Ananda Lewis made it painfully clear that her TRUE success came after she left BET for MTV. Now she's doing commercials and what not...go head...too bad BET couldn't do that for her.

I agree. Eminem is a lyricist. He doesn't need to say Kristal or Ice or any of that. He has skillz to make millz (CT4, you remember that??? LOL). Now, his issues, I don't know what to say about those, lol, but I do like his music. That Stan song and video were on point!

Okay.

This always confuses me.

If something comes on 9:00 p.m. EST, what time is that Los Angeles time? Is it 9:00 my time too (i.e. it airs at the same time (9:00 p.m.) for everyone) or is that 6:00 (3 hours earlier) pacific standard time?

BET can not afford to become MTV for black people, if only because a lot of black folks watch MTV too! Am I the only one who has noticed that MTV has put a LOT more black music- not just rap, but r&b too- on their station? I can't turn to MTV without hearing that Alicia Keys song "Fallin" or Craig David "Fill Me In" or "Hit Em Upo Style" by Blu something. BET has got to shape up!

I'm sayin! Can we go a day without hearing about him pulling a gun on someone or about how he's divorcing his wife! THe media is going to drive that young man mad.

But seriously, his refusal to buy into any of the standard crappy hip-hop trappings (money, hos, kristal and ice) have really endeared him to me. I still think his cd is messed up, lol, but at least it's original!

Hip-hop has got to change. It's becoming what rock and roll used to be- a bloated, old art form with little creativity involved and all eyes on the dollar signs.

BET has the same financial backing as MTV so the money is there its just that BET is not seeing a lot of it yet.

I'll have to agree with what someone said about BET slowly becoming like MTV. I think eventually they are going to change the name to Urban "Something or Other" so that they can get more than just African Americans on.

OKAAAY? I nearly cried when I saw how Whitney looked and behaved. What a mess! We need to thank Bobby Brown(that's what Whitney said)? For what? Turning her into a druggie? To me, it was a very sad moment.

Does anyone think that BET is becoming more more like MTV everyday? Especially since they were bought by Viacom which also owns MTV.

I can see your point. While I really have fallen off of the watching BET horse, I do see that the programming lacks depth. A majority of the programming is solely for music videos and who's who in music but those are the programs that capture the audience's attention (read: young America).

I think BET is doing a disservice to the youth because they are glamorizing a lifestyle that many of the audience can only dream of obtaining. They are not showing our young people that yes you can be a productive member of society without being a rapper, singer, or a baller. However, BET is not the only glamorizing the GOOD LIFE. IT is up to parents to govern what their children can and cannot watch on TV.

Personally, I was very DISAPPOINTED in the awards show----so much so that I just went and took my bath in the middle of Whitney's song. So I missed her speech, or whatever, afterwards.

THE GOOD:

1. Steve and Ced (they were good) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
2. Christina Agullara (excuse the spelling, but that girl can sing).
3. Eve's boots were on the money (but the rest of the outfit could go).

THE BAD:

1. Davante's hair and PURSE!!! (what's up with that?). He's GOT to be on something.
2. Mary J. Blige's outfit (that belonged in the trash. With ALL that money she has, I would have figured that she'd wear something more...let's say CLASSY!!!).
3. Little Bow-Wow's hair (what was HE trying to prove?).
4. Beyonce' (as you may already know). Why is she STILL trying to get all the glory, especially whenever they perform?
5. Andre'(from Outkast). He's a COMPLETE mystery. And he ALWAYS looks like a D*M FOOL!!
6. All of the artists who decided that they wanted to use their straight-up GHETTO language during the ceremony. BLACK PEOPLE PLEASE!!!!!
7. And can ANYONE believe that JILL SCOTT didn't get anything (that I'm aware of).

THE UGLY: (Refer back to THE BAD).

I'm in South Africa right now, so I don't get regular BET. Instead I get "BET International". Do any of you know, if the BET awards show will be airing again? Do you think it will be airing on BET International? I'll check the TV listings here as well.

From the previous posts, I think it will be hillarious to say the least. Can't wait to watch!

Again Jodeci, WTFFFFFF! They all looked high except Jo Jo (Is that the fat one) he looked so ashamed. Also he wasn't dressed like any of them. Dalvin and DeVante are the worse, they were trying to tske over on stage. I know Kci and Jo Jo were like excuse me we are the ones with a career so back the *BLEEP* up. It has been said for awhile thast DeVante was on drugs. Is it me or did he look sick also...
They need to change the name to the Ghetto awards. Whitney did not surprise me, because I've know for a long time her azz was ghettooooo. Mt cousin used to work for her, its not the drugs, she is naturally ghetto. Although Mary should have learned her speech, I love Mary, I like her because she is straight forward and real.
Ok why did Christina A. sound much better than most of te black folks singing? She can blow.
Did anyone see the pre-show when Kim W. through up the Pyramid. I had to OOP the TV.

The good:

Lil Bow Wow (not the performance. He's too young to move and rap ate the same time so the other guy was doing it). He's cute though. Why was his hair longer than and flyer than any of the females on stage.

Ced and Steve (nuff said)

Christina (she can sing.)

Bobby Kritsina (a little chunky but still sounded cute when she said "My mommy" as opposed to "Ma mama" like you'd think Whitney and Bobby's child may say).

Jay-Z performance

Eve performance. Gwen Stefani is a typical WG. I can appreciate that. Her lack of rhythm and Eve's steet saavy complemented one another.

The BAD:

Jodeci (what was up with K-Ci's mouth? Was he chewing tobacco or something?) Embarrassing.

Hell..everything else.

Why Whitney? Why? Has she wmoked her lungs out or what? She wasn't singing at all. She reved up for the "grand finale" to the best song she's ever had and couldn't do it. She let ole girl do it instead. I am so disappointed in her. Cissy looks like she is too.

The UGLY:

Mary J's speech and clothes. Why we gotta be at our awards shows looking like all our "good" clothes are at the cleaners/laundry mat. She looked crazy.

DC: Outfitswere awful and why did Beyonce swing her hair in the camera at all?

Well, I look forward to the Image Awards again. The only show which represents US in a decent light.

Ok I have to put in my 2 cents into this nice discussion. Here are my nominees for the First Annual Trifling Awards 2001 Edition

1) Whitney Houston: OH LAAAAAWD will someone please tell her to stop hittin dat chronic because Bobby Brown IS NOT and WILL NEVER BE the king of RB. How can she say that even with the likes of Luther on stage. When did the line between class and ghetto get so blurred that one can not gracefully, tactfully and humbly accept a lifetime achievement award.

2) This was a close tie- Mary J. Blige. I...mean..if...she...could....not...remember...wha t...to...say..to...Whitney...they........should... have...gotten..someone..who..can..
make..a..better...tribute. Next time, leave the grammar school looseleaf paper at home. And what de hell was up with the shredded dress. Can someone send her to finishing school, she's got alot of rough edges when it comes to formal events.

3. All people who don't know that you spit out the gum before going on stage

4. Traci Bingham- I will weave wat wargument awone....Its a shame that she only knows she is Black on Black awards shows.

5. Ananda Lewis: Will someone tell her that the Native American look went out last year. No matter how many designer duds I see her wear, she still looks blah

6. Jodeci-They make the Jamaican accent come out..Is who de hell dat bwoy Devante tink him is wid dat hairstyle? Him look like one fool

7. Shaquille O'neal- He got punked by Eve and looked like a big A@#. I was not feeling that big ass hoop in the ear either. He needs to get Steve Harvey's tailor.

8. Gwen Stefani- You thought we did not notice that you was off beat...gotcha. You did your thing though

9. AJ- Will someone tell him that glittery pants are NOT the way to go. Star on Hot 97 in NYC definitely was right when he calls him Predator. Why does Free always cut him off or try to crack on him when the camera is on.

10. Beanie Siegel- Take off dem hot ass Timbs in Vegas and go get a shave and a bath.

I think I have vented myself fully...whew, now I feel better. :-D

I WAS ALLL FOR EVE...ESPECIALLY WHEN THE SIXERS JERSEY CAME OUT... YEAHHHH AI..BUT THE SHOW WAS GHETTOOOOO AS HELL.... I COULDN'T STOP LAUGHING....LOL..BOW WOW IS A CUTIE PIE. CRACK WILL MAKE U DO ,ACT, AND SAY FUNNY THINGS...LOL..

Y'all got me cracking the hell up. I haven't had a computer at home for a minute, so I wasn't able to post anything about the awards. I'm still having problems with my phone line at home, but I'm back to work today.

So here is what I have to say about the awards.

I agree with everyone with that Jodeci thing. What the hell was going on with Devante? First off why was he grabbing his ding ding like that? That hair, and what the heck was that bag he had over his shoulder. I was cracking the hell up.

Y'all have commented on everything that I was thinking, but I have to ask one thing what was up with Cissy Houston? Her hair and her attire looked a hot mess!!

what does education have to do with artistic talent?

SableCherub, education has NOTHING to do with artistic talent. But it SURE has something to do with one's ability to READ accurately. I had no problem with Mary J. reading from her notes. It was the fact that she was not able to "flow" with it that was the issue. Now whether one thinks that she has ARTISTIC TALENT or not is another thing. No matter how you look at it, SOMEBODY thinks that she has ARTISTIC TALENT because homegirl is RICH. And (hearing this from Mary's own mouth in an interview that she did with Ed Gordon) although she is rich, she is unable to handle her own money because she DID NOT FINISH SCHOOL. She admits that she has difficulty with certain things BECAUSE she did not complete her education. And for that I say that I can understand why she had problems reading her speech on the other night.

Just my opinion.
