Hair Problems
My hair is breaking at an alarming rate, and I was wondering do any of you know of any products or anything I can do to combat this? Also, do any of you know of any good hair growth products or procedures. My head is starting to look scary!
|
Is your hair color treated? If so, Motions CPR conditioner is a good one to try.
|
Do you use perms or relaxers? It may be too strong. I know my adult cousin (mid- 30's) uses Just for Me (I'm not sure about the difference in strength), but it seemed to work and her hair looks better and is growing. She said keeps her same routine- beauty shop every two weeks, washes hair once or twice a week, keeps it moisturized, she just switched hair products.

Greetings Ladies, I hope you don't mind me posting all up in your forum! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
My sister used Aphogee. She said that it worked really well for her, but you have to be careful, because when you apply it, it makes your hair REALLY HARD, and if you touch it while it's like that, it'll just break off! I personally would shy away from it, but it did do wonders for my sister's hair. If you go to a stylist, ask her for an emergency breakage treatment. I got one last time I went (I think it was Nexus, but I forget), and when she combed through my hair after the shampoo, only 3 strands of hair came out!! But, it's been almost two weeks, and the breakage is back. She did say that that could happen, you just have to have the treatment done again. But be careful, my beautician did tell me that if you don't need the emergency breakage treatment, and it's applied to your hair, it can make your hair fall out. I don't think I needed it, my hair has shedded like this my whole life. And now I think that some of my hair is coming out, but I could be straight paranoid. So, whatever you do, choose wisely!! Sorry for the long post!! |
Okay y'all... hair is my forte, so my post will be long!
I'm not a licensed stylist, but I've been doing hair (for myself and friends) for over 10 years with no complaints or problems. I agree with Ideal08 about the Apoghee reconstructive conditioner. It is kinda expensive ($20), and very strong stuff, so be careful, and ALWAYS follow it with an Apoghee moisturizer. I am all about the new products by Organic Root Stimulator: Uplifting Shampoo, Hair Mayonnaise, Carrot Oil, Fertilizing Temple Balm, etc. They are a bit costly, too, but worth every cent! I live and die by the Hair Mayo conditioner! It will truly change the way your hair feels and moves! Now, if your hair is really damaged (i.e. dry, brittle, breakage, split ends), then your best friend will be a good, versatile haircut! If you choose to keep relaxing it, you should avoid lye at all costs because it dries out the hair. Baby perms (Just for Me, PCJ) are good, but you really should let a professional do it because he/she can be sure to ONLY perm the new-growth. I suggest Affirm if you go to the salon. And, even if you are trying to let your hair grow, you MUST, MUST, MUST get your ends clipped every 6-8 weeks if you really want to see results. Sounds crazy, but the only way your hair will grow is if you keep your ends clipped. On average, our hair (black hair) grows about 6 inches a year. If you clipped 1/8 of an inch every 6 weeks, you're really only cutting about 1.5 inches off, so you'd still gain some length-- healthy length! Here are my personal hair tricks: 1. I had lots of issues with breakage when I moved to Ohio because the water here is very hard. If your water is the culprit, try to rinse your hair in cool water instead of hot or really warm water. If you rinse it in cold water it will actually make your hair shinier! 2. About two times a week, I oil my scalp with a little Fertilizing Temple Balm, then I massage it in while holding my head down so that the blood rushes to my scalp. I also have a vibrating scalp massaging brush that I got from Sally's, and I use it to stimulate my scalp and hair follicles. My hair has been growing like weeds since then! 3. I use a 100% boar-bristle brush because it is gentler on the hair than regular nylon bristles are. 4. I always let my hair air dry. In order to avoid frizzing, I wrap it with a silk scarf while it's wet and just let it air dry through the day. When it's dry, I condition it with Carrot Oil and brush it until it straightens out, then I wrap it again (in a silk scarf, of course). 5. I NEVER comb it with a fine tooth comb while it's wet. Hair is its most vunerable when wet, so you should use a wide-tooth comb and be very gentle. 6. I admit that I use curling irons a lot (which is bad for the hair), but I always use a low setting AND heat-protection hair moisturizers. I try to avoid curlers by wrapping my hair in such a way that my style can hold without curlers, but whenever I NEED to curl it, I "bump" it just a little and I never use spritz or anything else that makes the hair hard or sizzle. Other products that I swear by include Sebastian's Zero Gravity weightless hairspray (the bomb!), and that new anti-breakage shampoo by Soft-Sheen (orange bottle). I also love Loreal's natural scalp treatment and hot oil. I could talk all day and night about hair, but I won't bore you anymore. If you have anymore questions or anything, let me know. If you were in Columbus, Ohio, I would HOOK YOU UP for just $10 (touch-up, trim, style). Good luck, girl! the411 ------------------ Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Thank you to everyone that responded, I'll be making a trip to get my ends clipped tommorow, followed by a shopping spree at the beauty supply store. At least now I have some good products to shop for.
By the way, I stopped somewhere before work and picked up the Aphogee, anti-breakage spray, it is GOOD! I ran my hand through my hair after I used it, and none came out! |
Hey, Nubian!
I'm a little late on this thread, but since you have been offered very sound advice about styling aids for your hair on the outside, let me suggest one more thing. Check your diet. Alot of times when people are stressed out, or are not eating right for whatever the reason may be, their hair and skin shows the effect. I have had to pay attention to this, because I have modeled for several years, and my hair and skin goes through alot - styling, teasing, spraying, extending, etc. My skin has had the same issue, but that's not your issue! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif Since hair is nothing more than dead protien strands, start from the inside, and work your way out. With multi-vitamins, water, and a little more good fat http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif Don't worry, I mean foods like seafood, fruits, and nuts - not KFC http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif you will help your hair grow out healthier and more resistant to daily wear, tear, and breakage. Contrary to popular belief, you CANNOT repair split ends - they must be cut. The sooner, the better. The longer you wait, the higher up the split goes, and the more you need to cut in the long run. I think everyone in the thread has given you great ideas for products, I have probably used them all http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif, but add Sebastian Potion 9 leave-in conditioner to your list. It is expensive ($15 per tube), and only found in certified salons, but it is DEFINITELY worth it! Now would be a great time for your hair makeover, because the dry/cold weather this time of year is especially damaging to black hair. I hope this info helps. Good luck to you, and have a wonderful "nubian makeover day" http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Personal days work wonders for the body and spirit! Thanx for all those tips; I am thinking about getting my hair straigtened again. I had it straightened about a year ago and let it grow for about 6 months before the summer humidity frizzed it out. I LOVED IT!! At it's best it was often slicked on the top and sides and long and curly in the back, touching the back of my collar (I am male, btw, and I was trying the get that once-popular 70s men's look, that semi-long hair). I was trying to sport a Gene Rayburn 'do from 1975 (I will link a picture of him upon request). *LOL*
Anyhow, thanx a lot. Rain Man Rain Man |
Nubian: I have a cosmetology license, but so far you hav gotten good responses. I would try the Motions CPR because it stops breakage and shedding. The Product recommended by Ideal 08 is by Nexxus and it is called Emergencee. It is for hair that is falling out and I mean in handfuls. Like she said don't use it after your hair has stopped falling out. The organic root stimulator products work pretty well, but be prepared to pay a pretty penny for them. If you need any more help email me.

Just FYI,
I agree mostly with what everyone has said so far, but i wanted to add one thing. 411, my mom is a beautician and she says that clipping your ends has absolutely nothing to do with hair growth...hair grows from the root, not the tip of the shaft. Clipping hair is done to keep the hair healthy and in good condidtion. I agree with you on clipping every couple of weeks because not only is your hair in better shape, it is more attractive when then ends are not all stringy amd uneven. |
Quote:
But it does have to do with hair breakage and split ends, etc. I was natural for almost a year and learned alot about my hair. I am seriously considering it again but I don't want to cut all of my hair off and start from scratch. Any suggestions? |
411-I agree, I agree!
Director-I am in the same situation. I have had my hair cut (actually cut and styled) only once and it was in a short bob. Well, it has long since grown back and it is now partially down my back. I want to go natural with about 2-3 inches all the way around, but people (especially my mom!) say i'm stupid to cut all my hair off. I say, it'll grow back! I think that i'm just gonna go out one day, and just go to the beautician and come out a new woman!! People say that when you don't think about it, you'll have the nerves to just do it. Just do it! |
dst3800,
I'm not saying clipping the ends has anything to do with hair growth. Clearly, it doesn't. But, like Director said, if your hair is splitting and breaking, it obviously won't achieve the desired length and thickness of healthy hair, hence its growth is hugely affected. Most people who refuse to cut thier hair (thinking that they'd rather it be long than healthy) end up looking quite "TRIFE" or eventually having to go shorter than they'd like to in the end. I don't think "every couple of weeks" for a trim is necessary unless you're the kind of person who uses curling irons to oblivion. 6-8 weeks is fine for hair that is carefully tended to and maintained, preferrably by a professional. ------------------ Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Pi Kappa, SP97 #3 of QUINTESSENCE |
After much breakage and stress, I just went to the salon (a new one so they wouldn't talk em out of it), sat down and said "CUT IT!". That was 7 years ago and I haven't looked back.
If and when I grow my hair back, it will be in locs. If you decide to grow your hair back to a non-natural style, be prepared for that in-between stage because it is not fun. Good Luck!! Quote:

Hey I wanted to bring this back up. I want to know what everyone does to their hair, what products they use and whether or not they are natural or not.
Kay |
Although they are a bit expensive Aveda makes really good hair products and I have used them when my hair was chemically processed and natural. They also have a really really good deep conditioner (Deep Penetrating Hair Revitalizer) that worked miracles on my hair when I had breakage, their Universal Styling Creme also was good to use daily for moisture.

Well, Sisterfriends, I can truly say that my hair has withstood the test of time. I've had just about EVERY hair style there is (from hot-comb to box-braids). Currently, I'm sporting a short natural cut and I'm ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I apply Soft & Beautiful's Botanicals Texturizer every 6 to 8 weeks. And about a week after applying the texturizer, I add Creme of Nature's Ash-Brown Coloring. It's wonderful. I'm not too hot on Dark & Lovely hair products because they've proven to be bad for my hair. My husband maintains his and my son's haircuts. So...NATURALY he maintains my cut also (he cuts and shapes my hair every two weeks and, if I may say so, he does an EXCELLENT job). http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I always get compliments on my cut and color. Most people think that a beautician maintains it and they are often surprised when I reveal this information. So right now, for me, NATURAL is the way to go. It gives me a break from all of the chaos that goes with keeping up a hair do. Besides, I've got a 7-year old daughter. Keeping HER hair done is enough without having to worry about mine.
|
My sista, I applaud your style and versatility. However, I must make a correction lest someone is confused (like I was before I learned!).
If you are 'natural' you use NO chemicals at all; that includes color as well. Texturizer is just a mild RELAXER and therefore is a chemical. It sounds like you have a short cut but NOT a 'natural'. Quote:

Does anyone have any advice for someone that just removed braids? I had micros, and thought that I was doing everything that I should have to moisterize it every day (carrot oil, olive oil, pink oil...) however when I removed them... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. My hair does not look the way it did before I put the braids in and it is dry. I went to my stylist and got a deep conditioner so that it would not break and I will go back to him in a few weeks to let him perm it. However, I want to rebuild my moisture back as much as possible. Any suggestions?
|
You have gotten some excellent advice. I've had problems with my hair as well. The last time though it was from a botched haircut. Needless to say I've since changed stylists http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I was very anxious for my hair to grow back. I really wanted to try the micro braid thing, however because my major was Broadcast Journalism I couldn't experiment any type of natural, locs, or braids. So, my hair really suffered. Now different things work for different people http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif But the system that I found to work for me was I had to stop perming my own hair http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif I finally had to breakdown and sacrifice for a professional perm. Now, my hair for some reason has to be permed every 4 weeks...go figure but anways...after every perm I always get my ends trimmed. This is essential to keeping your hair healthy. Once, while trying to grow my hair out I refused to get my ends trimmed and needless to say my hair was split and damaged almost all the way up to the shaft. Also after every perm I get a deep conditioning treatment. I use tea tree shampoo by Paul Mitchell and a moisturizer on my ends during the week called get this: Black Sassy (don't ask me what the name of my perm is http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.giflol It is sold at Sally's and it contains lavender in it...and it actually moisturizes my hair well. I also take a Vitamin E supplement every other day. This helps your hair, nails and skin...but you have to be careful not to take too much. Make sure you get your perms when scheduled too. And remember too that if you are under a lot of stress your hail will shed as well.
|
About Aphogee...I really liked it. I ended up doing it at home (the bottle is about 7 dollars for a few ounces)...it kinda stinks. Just so you know. But, it really works!

Once you've steeped down the herbs, pour some of the mixture into a spray bottle for everyday use, and freeze the rest until needed. Also try the products on www.caroldaughter.com. Someone on another forum recommened the products and they work very well. |

I recently got my hair cut short and I love it. I have had just about every hairstyle other than braids or natural.
I have found that any the Nexxus products are good, especially deep conditioner and reconstructors. I also have started fall in love with the Sensitive by Nature products as well. When I first got color in my hair it became very damaged. I started to use the cholesterol conditioner as well as hotoil treatments and it worked wonders. I also wash my hair every week and try to use the same products consistently. |
Yes, I do know of the two journalists that you are speaking of and yes they do sport natural styles...however, you also have to realize that they have already "Made IT" Needless to say, I haven't.
I am still struggling to land my first job in the television industry and one thing that makes it hard for us is that news directors want us to look like their audience! SO, I guess if I could get hired in a small to mid market city where over 80% of that stations's viewer's are of an ethnic background and wore natural styles, then YES! It would make it a lot easier for me to wear the styles that I want, ie micro-braids. Many times, when you get into a station, they send you to a consultant anyway where they "make-you over" to what they think their viewers will like and what will make their viewers continue to watch thier station. I know that many viewers at the particular staion where Monica Kauffman is at watch just to see what color her hair will be that week and if her style has changed...this is highly unusual because most viewers like consistency and not something that changes every week. Yet, part of her marketability is the fact that she does change her hair color and style so often. I also know that she has struggled with a bout of breast cancer and the chemo and radiation treatments have damaged her hair greatly. However, because she has always had such a positive attitude about her, she just took it like a grain of salt. Anchors and reporters have been suspended, fired, and even sued because sometimes in the contracts that we have to sign the stations that we work for own our image and we cannot change it until we go through them first! Station managers are very afraid of making their viewers mad, and losing out on the dollars that come in from the ratings wars. However, I applaud our sisters like Monica who continue to pave the way for beginners like me; and I only hope that I can do the same once I get to where they are at....but as you know, first....I HAVE TO GET MY FOOT IN THE DOOR http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif Sorry Soror Moderators if this post was too long but as you all know Broadcast Journalism is my passion and was my major! Feel free to take this post and make it into another topic if you have to. [This message has been edited by Conspiracy2 (edited June 12, 2001).] |

I have what is typically titled traction aloepecia around parts of my hairline. My stylist deep conditions and places me under a steamer each week. That, coupled with a treatment by Nioxin called Follicle Booster seems to be helping. You can purchase the Follicle Booster from a full service salon or by visiting the Nioxin website. It is an effective product.
But, most of all, I would recommend that you begin to see a licensed cosmetologist who is also a hair doctor/trichologist. They can begin treatments that can solve your hair delimma. ------------------ I will bless the Lord at ALL times His praise shall continually be in my mouth. If your hair is breaking off DISCONTINUE the relaxers. The last thing you should be applying to your sensitive scalp are chemicals. They damage your hair follicles, scalp and weakens the already sensitive hair strands.
Start cutting - go to a professional who specializes in recovering damaged hair and start up a regimen with them. It may seem costly in the short run but in the long run your hair will thank you for it. Consider going natural - as long as you are gentle to your hair and scalp this may be the best route to go. I have been natural since 1994 after a bad touchup experience and refuse to straighten again b/c my natural hair just feels to healthy and soft. Plus I am no longer a slave to the beauty parlor every 2 weeks. And RAIN is my friend!!!! |
I have a short hair cut and for the past year I've been trying products to make my hair curly or wavy(sp) while its wet. I guess you can say its the wet look. I've tried different kinds of mousse and my hair just doesn't react to it. I'm starting to think that my hair isn't the right texture for this type of look, but I've seen people with short hair as well as longer hair who have achieved this look and their hair seems to be just about the same texture as mine.
Does anyone know what I can use on my hair? It's the summer and I want do something so I don't have to spend so much time on my hair. |
I beleive that look is acheived by using a texturizer, which is a very mild relaxer. The texturizer relaxes the natural curl to a wave instead of bone straight like a perm.
The only other way to acheive this look if it is not your natural texture is with a cold wave/jerri curl type product. This is NOT recommended. Quote:

On another random note. I usually hate washing my own hair at home cause it takes about 2-3 hours to dry/flat-iron/curl it. But I found this miracle stuff, I swear. It's Bone Strait blow-dry lotion, and it makes blow-drying faster and MUCH straighter. It only took about 20 minutes to straighten my hair as opposed to the usual hour and a half. Best of all, it comes in little packets that are only $.99. Just my style. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |

Mccoyred, is it safe to put different chemicals in your hair like that(ie. you havve a perm and instead of getting a touch up you get a texturizer). Maybe I need to come to grips with fact that I probably will not beable to achieve this style. Besides every hairstyle isn't meant for everyone to wear. Dang, it would have been so cute though. [This message has been edited by candygirl (edited June 23, 2001).] |
I've taken up the practice of braiding my hair so I can avoid heat styling and pulling my hair, a friend of mine did this for 2 semesters an her air looks great now.
Tamika |
Candygirl...
I read somewhere that another approach is to wash your hair, and spray on a setting lotion that is also a texturizer (like Lottabody) and then start braiding from the bottom, doing small sections and letting it air dry. I wanted to try it, but the last time I washed I didn't feel like dealing with the drama if it turned out crazy.. but has anybody else tried this? Some stylist SWORE this is how they do Beyoncé's. |
I've tried the braiding technique before and it didn't work, but that was because it wasn't braided tight enough I guess. I'm going to have one of my friends do it for me and I'll see how it turns out.
|
Last time I posted I was thinking about going natural again. Well, in March I got braids and haven't looked back. I will pay $250 to get the braids that I want and they last 3 months. I got tired of the micro braids and did the corn row...love it. When I go to the SW Regional Conference, I will have the micros again.
Braids work if you keep your hair moisterized daily. If you use the human hair some braids may slide off..if you use synthetic you must keep it moisterized. I find that Braid X is the best. When I take my braids out my hair is always soft. My hair has grown about 4 inches and I haven't had a perm since January. Also, if you have the micros and dread taking them done..if you have human hair with your micros the easiest way to take them out is to stand in the shower and let the water run on your head and the braids slide off with easy. It may have taken 6 hours to do it but it can take 45 mins. to an hour to take them down. ------------------ "Director" #2 LaMarque Alumnae Chapter Spr 99 [This message has been edited by DirectorDST99 (edited June 25, 2001).] |
