NPC - Beekman Tower 75th Anniversary

Has anybody heard anymore details about this. Found it on npc's website.

from NPC's ph factor newsletter:

http://www.npcwomen.org/college/pdf/...actor_Fall.pdf

The National Panhellenic Conference is planning a celebration open to all members April 22-23, 2005 at the Beekman Tower Hotel in New York City. NPC will present a plaque to the hotel to commemorate its 75thanniversary. In 1921, the 3,000-member New York Chapter of the Panhellenic Association decided to erect a clubhouse to provide permanent and temporary living accommodations for sorority women looking to enter the workforce. The Panhellenic Association raised $1,600,000 by selling bonds to the members. Philanthropist Emily Easton Hepburn invested in the Panhellenic Association in 1926 and became the majority stockholder in the project. She selected 3 Mitchell Place at First Avenue and East 49thStreet as the site for the new building. Originally purchased in her own name, Ms. Hepburn turned the property over tothe Panhellenic Association in 1928. The hotel was opened as the Panhellenic Tower and the Greek alphabet was carved into bricks near the entrance to the hotel. The cornerstone contained a listing and history of the Panhellenic Association fraternities. The Panhellenic Tower was a headquarters for the New York City club and was used for initiations, banquets, dances and meetings. The building was designated a landmark by the Landmark Commission because it was an excellent example of Art Deco architecture and because it was built by women for women. The building was sold to the founder of Affinia Hospitality in1964, renamed as the Beekman Tower and transformed into an all-suite property. Affinia is a collection of luxury and business hotels throughout New York City. A special “Sisters in the City” package is open to all Panhellenic members from mid-June through August 31, 2005. Reservations can be made by calling 1-866-AFFINIA or online at www.affinia.com.

At Convention last summer, we had a flyer included with our materials regarding this celebration.

The flyer included the history of the tower and hotel, and until December 14th of this year, rates start at $229 per night. The package includes spacious suite accomodations, a daily continental breakfast, a "welcome" cocktail at the Top of the Tower, and complimentary hospitality suite for groups booking a minimum of ten rooms.

Aside from the plaque presentation in May 2005, I don't think they're going to have any more celebration plans.

I'd love to go, but $229 a night is just too much for me. :(

Thanks for posting this. If you get anymore information about upcoming events, please let me know. I would love to participate.

I had no idea about the history of Beekman Towers despite the fact that I am a few blocks from there. If NPC still owned that building, they would be rich since real estate in this neighborhood is so expensive. It would be the biggest sorority house in the country. :)

Yes, Chi Omega announced this at our National Convention this summer too.

*Notice the fleur-de-lis on the front of the building -- so cool.

I just received an email that there is an NPC Celebration at the Beekman Tower Hotel on April 22 & 23. I'll share the details when I learn more.

AEPhiSierra 01-04-2005 11:52 PM

I saw it on the NYC Alumnae Panhel Calendar as well.

Wow!!

My sorority was founded in this very building!!

I'd love to see the Tower in person someday.

There was a whole chapter on this in one of the Tri Delta history books I read -- I thought it was really interesting. I would have loved to stay there back in the day.

It's nice. It's near the United Nations. I go by it sometimes since it's a few blocks away from me.

I didn't get the email until the day before the meeting so I didn't attend. I plan to attend future meetings since I am now officially on the email list.

I found some more information about the Beekman Tower Hotel. http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/html/des...nic_print.html

AEPhiSierra 01-12-2005 10:15 AM

We talked about the Beekman tower event at the meeting. The weekend is definitely happening (we'll just ignore how bad the day before passover is for scheduling an event like this in NYC.) and they are thinking of having happy hour/cocktails on friday and a brunch on saturday. i don't know how definite any of those details are though. It's being organized by NPC nationally but they asked for feedback from NYC Panhel. If I hear anything more I'll let everyone now.

xo_kathy 01-12-2005 10:46 AM

Sierra and P-N-C:

We (NYC Chi O alum chapter) had been getting info from NYC Panhel for a while, but it seems to have stopped. I also sent an email to who I thought was the president a while ago and heard nothing back. If you want to PM some contact info that would be great.

Thanks!
Kathy

Keep us posted over on this side of the river!!!!

I know some of my Jersey Deltas would be interested in attending...and I certianly would!!! I haven't heard anything about it from my alum chapter.

FirstAndFinest 03-10-2005 07:08 PM

I just received an invitation in the mail and via email. I'm going to pass along to my alumnae chapter members, but my sisters on the email aren't planning to attend. Any of you GC'ers planning to attend? Will you be attending both functions, or just one? I'd be up to going, but not if I don't know anyone... (sigh, I sound like I'm still in high school...)

AEPhiSierra 03-11-2005 11:04 AM

I was worried about not knowing anyone either but I'll most like be there on Friday night (still not sure if I am available Saturday morning. I am sure there will be other people from NYC Panhel but they all have active alumnae associations and have been around longer than me so they will probably know a bunch of people already unlike me who just got started. I doubt many of my sisters will be there b/c of Passover. If you want firstandfinest we can buddies at the event since we're both in the same boat with not knowing people.

xo_kathy 03-11-2005 11:52 AM

I will be there volunteering on Friday at the cocktail hour! I might make your name badge! :)

Truthfully, I think it will be more national NPC women and the different executives of the 26 member orgs. than local alumnae chapter women.

Peaches-n-Cream 03-11-2005 07:48 PM

I plan to attend at least one of the events. If you're nervous about not knowing anyone, just look for me, and you won't be alone. :)

FirstAndFinest 03-24-2005 08:20 PM

I've decided to go to the Reception on Friday evening!!! I hope to meet all you nice girls there! (I thought it was so sweet that you didn't laugh at me for not wanting to go alone.) We'll have to synch up closer to the event... WAY too early now to tell what I'll be wearing in a month...;)

I went passed the building last night and started to think about the anniversary events and the history of the building and the NPC. I know that I am a dork, but I got all excited and happy to be a sorority woman. I'm still not sure if I am able to attend both events, but I will go to something. I'll be the tall chick with the DPhiE badge.

I just thought that I would share. :)

If you go to the cocktail hour I can brag to the kids on the Engagement Ring thread that I have seen it in real life!

Peaches-n-Cream 03-29-2005 07:42 PM

I will be there Friday night and probably Saturday morning.

Anyone else?

DolphinChicaDDD 03-29-2005 07:52 PM

I WANNA GO!!!!

Can I crash the party? lol

ZTAMich 03-29-2005 10:09 PM

I just got info from NYC ZTA about this today and hope to go to at least one of the events. It's the first weekend of our Spring Break and it'd be fun to see some of ya'll again & new faces too! Going to definetly try to be there Friday and we'll see if Saturday too...

YES!

It's official. I will attend both events. A few DPhiE Alumnae will attend Friday night also. It will be so much fun! :D

xo_kathy 04-20-2005 10:41 AM

Ladies:

I've heard from the woman arranging the volunteers for the events, and it seems they could use some help on Saturday. It's easy stuff, doing check-in, directing people to the room etc. If any of you could help, if you could pm with your email address I'll send you some info soon.

Thanks!
Kathy

Peaches-n-Cream 04-21-2005 06:26 PM

I'll see you tomorrow! Now if I could only figure out what I should wear.

Ditto! If it was as nice as it was Monday/Tues/Wed I'd be set but these warm days & cool nights throw me off...I'm thinking black pants and a fun short sleeved top...anything to make feel 'cleaned up' after a day of teaching!

Taualumna 04-22-2005 06:05 PM

I'd like to go, but I won't be in NYC until Monday...

Peaches-n-Cream 04-22-2005 11:02 PM

It was fun. I met and saw lots of people and I have pictures to prove it! I'll be there tomorrow.

Peaches-n-Cream 04-23-2005 01:54 PM

Just returned from the brunch. I had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful women. I feel really excited about the NPC. :)

Ooooo -- how fun! Were there women representing all the groups?

Someone said that 21 out of 26 were represented between last night and tonight. I met quite a few Chi Omegas. I can't remember their names right now since it was kind of a whirlwind for me. There were many officers from NPC and various sororities. I really like attending these kind of events because it makes me reaffirm my commitment to my sorority and the NPC in general. :)

xo_kathy 04-25-2005 10:58 AM

I didn't attend the brunch, but I did go to the cocktail hour - and saw and chatted with Cream! And yes I got to see her ring in real life and it is beautiful! :)

There was a Chi O there who was a chapter visitor in the 40's!!!! And she had lots of stories! It was really nice to see the many generations there.

AEPhiSierra 04-25-2005 03:04 PM

sounds like it went well! too bad i had to miss it :-(

FirstAndFinest 04-25-2005 09:16 PM

I'm sorry I had to miss the reception. :( I was so looking forward to meeting some fellow GCers and all the other NPC women there! Had a killer week and didn't even leave the office until after 7PM on Friday! yech!!:p
