Dry Social Ideas
we cant have alcohol at our socials so we usually do things like handcuffed bowling, capture the flag, go to a cider mill for cider, doughnuts, and a hay ride, ice skating, roller skating. the thing is that these events are getting old and i looked through the ideas already on here and most of them included drinking so i was wondering if there were any ideas out there for DRY events? thanks for any help

Maybe hire a swing dance instructor/ballroom dancing instructor to teach the group how to dance...mix up the ladies and men as dance partners and learn something new.
|
How about a social where you serve mocktails? Smoothies, virgin daiquiris, etc.
Or a games night? Get some munchies and soda, and set up some board games, maybe some word games like Taboo, and/or a few decks of cards. |
I am with you
I am with you, we are required to be dry also. some popluar events for us are tie social where you choose your date by picking a tie from a pile and than we have a formal meal. Another is a white trash trailer bash. Every dresses as trashy as possible, and we have chettos, hotdogs, and other "trashy foods" and do things like toliet paper bowing, have arm wresting, and then of couse a few rounds of the famou jello wresting, which can be contriversal, but tons of fun.

One of my sister's recently planned an event here in NYC where a nutritionist was having a class on how to make some healthy foods, followed by a yoga class.
I also enjoy just going out to eat, as well as for coffee. |
Pool is also fun, along with maybe sightseeing local touristy-stuff, SHOPPING!, hiking, a roadtrip............
|
Poker is a good non alcoholic idea.
|
Why not celebrate the fact that you're dry?! We just had a Prohibition party... which was SO much fun. Everyone got into the costumes whether they were gangsters or flapper girls...

a few events held last year
A few events held last year, with the sorority as the host, and inviting a fraternity included ...
1) a hypnotist show (held in a university meeting room) ... the fraternity members liked it so much, they made very positive comments to the Greek Life office 2) attending a local carnival that was themed for Halloween 3) going ice skating in a city's downtown ice rink, having hot chocoloate, etc. All three received postive feedback from those that attended. Even if inviting a fraternity to something they know will be "Dry", they ended up having fun. Also, one of the frats invited was the frat that the sorority was going to be matched up with for Greek Sing, so the non-alcoholic event served as a nice ice breaker to upcoming Greek Sing practices. |
Depending on how big of a crowd you have (and money) our school used to rent the movie theater and have a midnight showing of a current run movie. But this might have cost a ton I'm not too sure...It was fun tho, we packed the theater!
|
We've had a few dry socials this year. Ours also have to be "educational" because of sanctions. We had a luau with Kappa Sigs and we all dressed up in Hawaiian attire. We had a BYOB "Bring Your Own Banana" with DUs and we learned how to properly use a condom. Next month we're having a formal etiquette dinner with AGRs.

Bowling, capture the flag. You should get a clown and a petting zoo as well. Completely dry social events, rough.
But if it's all you have to work with sometimes we'll invite a sorority over cook them a good dinner and have an afternoon mixer, I suppose you could do it without cocktails. Virgin drinks are too high school prom. Just get bottles of Pellegrino with dinner or soda and whatever elsle you want. |
movie idea
another idea instead of renting a theater might be to rent a projector instead. go to a local hotel and ask for some sheets, they stock up on old sheets for some reason usually. fasten them all together and if your house is situated as such hang it and set up the projector to just show a movie where everyone can sit on the front lawn or across the street or whatever. i know some Sams that do that at UC and there is always a huge turnout.

Great ideas! Piggyback onto any of the 100s of events going on at the university at any given time. It's FREE.
Other ideas for social events: -Grafitti Social (set up the room with black lights, serve snacks and drinks). Everyone wears a white t-shirt and everyone gets paint and markers to write on other people's t-shirts. -Pick up Line Social (set up a fishbowl for boys and one for girls with strips of paper). As each person enters the event, they dip into the fishbowl to get their pickup line. Next walk around giving your pick up line to members of the opposite sex until you find your match. Serve refreshments and snacks. Variation-- famous couples: Romeo must find Juliet. Mac must find Cheese. W and Laura, etc... -Viking: This was an ATO thing at my school-- the guys decorate the house for a party, and everyone makes costumes out of fabric and faux fur. Variations: Toga Party, White Trash Prom, 80's Prom, Sock Hop, Luau, etc. - Go to a museum, concert, park, theme park, zoo, lecture, etc. And, look at the events where you would serve alcohol. What would they be? Just cut out the alcohol. |
We did a rootbeer party. We had two kegs of rootbeer. There was a rootbeer float "bar" and rootbeer pong. We watched Old School together. It was super fun.

my chapter has really strict rules about drinking too. so, thats a prob. we always run into when planning socials....not alot to do sometimes. lol
but, this week in fact we are doing a water war with one of the frats on campus. my sorority is wearing red bandanas and the guys are wearing white. as long as you are wearing it and you are outside you can be hit. we laid done rules, like "no hitting inside" and if you arent wearing your bandana you cant be hit (bc someone might need to look good for class for a presentation or something) but, we are basically going to be running around campus and the town (its a small college town) shooting each other with water guns and balloons. we also have tickets, and if we get shot we have to give one ticket to the guy. (and vice versa) each member gets 10 tickets a day. at the end of the week whoever has the most tickets (whichever organization) wins, and the losers have to be their waiters or waitresses at pizza night. haha, its gonna be fun! hope this idea helped! |
Dry Social Events
I'm afraid there are no fun activities involving fraternities and sororities that do not involve alcohol. The absence of adult beverages ultimately results in a 6th grade dance (boys on one side, girls on the other.)
However, if you are left no other choice, use this 6th grade dance theory to your advantage. Place a net between the two groups, throw some sand under your feet, and viola~ beach volleyball. Still not enough entertainment? Play shirts and skins! Hope this helps, Mitch |
Dry Chapter Ideas
My Sorority was also a dry chapter!!! Some of the things we did for mixers and parties were.......Food Fights, golfing, movies, game nights, zoo, ect!!
|
Dry stuff...
Seriously, if you need a substance to have an enhanced or elevated mood to leave yourself uninhibited, then there is a lot about life you have to learn...
Have a College Passion Party. Make aphrodesiacs: Chocolate, strawberries, figs, oysters, etc. Saffron noodles. Have belly "dancers" both male and female. Men learn one way, and ladies learn another way. The protect yourselves with Trojan or Lifestyles and the Durex Ring. Use special incense or aromatherapy to heighten the senses... Hayle, you could have a swing set, try on special equipment and take some stuff for a spin. Practice safer sex... ;) |

No official event on our campus includes alcohol. I've had fun at all of them. We've had a Halloween mixer, a food fight mixer, a bowling mixer, date parties where we dress up and go out to eat at a nice restaurant, white trash mixers, etc. Like someone else said, just think about the things you do with alcohol. Then take it out. It's fun. Yeah. But if you can't have fun and meet people without it, you either have a serious problem, or you haven't matured yet. |
Im the director of chapter events for my sorority, and we keep our exchanges dry as well, which turns out great because almost everyone does out here. Either way, we've done a ton of really successful exchanges since i took the position on 2 years ago!
On campus ideas: - Speed dating (so much fun! and a great way to meet everyone) - Murder Mystery (Everyone gets into costume and character) - Sushi making - Iron chef (rent hot plates and provide random ingredients) - Picture scavenger hunt (every group gets a camera and has to take specific pictures in order to receive their next clue) - Mini olympics (chose a bunch of random games like pass the fruit, fear factor eating contest, beer bottle bowling and obstacle courses... one of our most successful exchanges yet!) - salsa dancing lessons - movie and dinner nights (we all make dinner together and watch a movie) - casino nights (with fake money) - Pumpkin carving - indoor mini golf (create a golf course inside your house!) Off campus ideas: - comedy club (yuk yuks) - bowling - ice skating/broom ball - themed events, like out here we have fright night and the stanley park ghost train during halloween! always a blast! either way, those are just some ideas! i have a ton more up my sleeve so feel free to ask if you need any more ideas! |
oh! and water balloon bocce ball! always fun! except it usually just turns into a massive water balloon fight hahaa
|
I like the midnight movie idea.
|
Somthing that my sorority does is (all in good fun of course!) we have a roast night, like on comedy central. We elect any person from our chapter (regardless of age or pin) and the fraternity we're having the exchange with does the same, and then we roast them. Nobody has been offended in past years, it's more of an honnor to be roasted :-)

We used to do an event called Phi Tie, it was kinda like a baby crush party. Each girl had a date, but she did not choose him, one of her sisters did. It was then the job of the sister who picked the date to get a tie from him and give it to the sister she picked him for. The boys did not know who their date was until they found the girl wearing their tie. And then we spent the day at the park or someplace like that. We have the beach here to, so we would do that a lot.
|
i know one thing that ive done before which works well if its hot out is that we had a game of soft ball but we changed alot of the rules. we used one of those wet bats with the squishy balls. we also used baby pools for the bases and we had a slip and slide from third to home. to make it a little more fun we also trade shirts and the girls get to make the shirts for the guys and vice versa. it makes it more fun to find out who made whos shirt.

You can do powderpuff football
Broom ball |
Or a dance party is always fun. You can do a marathon or dance off

Last semester we had a combination social/service activity with a fraternity - we had a Senior Citizen's Prom at the local Sr. Citizen's Center! It was SOOO cute - we all went and dressed up, and so did the guys and we worked with the director of the center to plan events for the senior citizens to enjoy. We have also done a hay ride and corn maze around Halloween which was really fun. We've also paired with a fraternity and "adopted" a family for Christmas. I think we did this through a local charity, and we went Xmas Shopping for a family and donated the gifts. We've also done dry dinners at fraternity houses where we've made dinner together and had a dance. Hmmm... I'm trying to keep thinking, but those are the ones sI remember off the top of my head. Hope that helps!

Haunted Tour of the campus
One of the best socials that I was part of was a haunted tour  of our campus. We did this with one of our local sororities and we all had a blast.
Our social chairman wore a nice suit and a devil's mask with a plastic pitchfork to fit the theme. We then toured the campus and heard all the ghost stories. This worked really good for us because we have a lot of activity on our campus. If your campus doesn't have any crazy ghost stories there are many websites that have lots of information you could reference and find some local sites! |
A few ideas that I have that havent been mentioned are:
1.) Paintball 2.) Laser tag 3.) Maize maze - which is a cornstalk field that has been developed into a maze for people to find their way through it. this is one located in lancaster, pa but if you you type maize maze into google their are lots of websites that pop-up and there are usually a couple other things to do there as well. to complete the total maze finding all the check points usually takes at least two hours you could divide up into groups of four or so and work your way through the maze. http://www.cherrycrestfarm.com/cornmaze.asp All of these of course depend on the amount of money and resources you have available to your chapter |
I say, why not a HALO 3 tournament social for those video game junkies! Can establish a network of people from different areas of the campus. Also, could think about a intellectual conversation over different theories.
|
we also don't drink in events
las semester we did scavenger hunt over forth work as part of rush and was realy fun other events we had done is video game nigth icecram social girl/boys nigth out- who has the most fun with out spending any money karaoke was so much fun going to clubs board and twister nigth pizza nigth __________________ Alpha Phi Omega Coed-Fraternity |

May I ask where these websites are? I'm dying to find out about any activity on my campus. |
Stuffed animal dodgeball
it is hillarious and you really dont have to worry about getting hurt.
-get a big room, set up a couple of forts for people to hide in, if they want to, then just launch stuffed animals at each other. works best with a bunch of people. no alcohol is needed for this event. :):):) |
