Agent: Yankees slugger target of extortion plot
Mike Robinson / Associated Press
Posted: 1 hour ago

read on NBC5.com that this happened 10 years ago.

CHICAGO (AP) - New York Yankees star Gary Sheffield and his wife were the targets of a blackmailer who claimed to have embarrassing sexual videotapes of her and a musician, the slugger's business agent said Tuesday.
Business agent Rufus Williams read a statement from Sheffield in which the Yankees outfielder said his wife, DeLeon, had a long relationship with a professional musician over a decade ago. Sheffield said he had known about the relationship, which came before the couple married.

"I have not seen the alleged videotape, nor do I care to," Sheffield said in the statement. "I love my wife and I vow again to stand by her through any trial or tribulation."

Sheffield said he hoped "the FBI and the federal authorities will prosecute this man to the full extent of the law."

"We will not be blackmailed," he said in the statement.

Derrick Mosley, 38, a Chicago man who describes himself as a minister and has fashioned himself as a community activist, was charged Monday with operating a scheme to defraud for allegedly attempting to extort money from a professional athlete, who was not named.

Mosley was in custody Tuesday pending a Thursday bond hearing. His attorney, Luis Galvan, had no immediate comment after his arrest.

Williams described Tuesday how he had been contacted earlier this month by Mosley about a videotape purported to show Sheffield's wife. He said he called the FBI immediately.

"My client is very comfortable with the position he is in, and his wife is very comfortable with the position she is in," Williams said. "They have a very strong bond."

Neither Williams nor the FBI affidavit accompanying charges against Mosley identified the musician.

Sheffield said in his statement that he was out of the country, would not be available for comment and would never discuss it publicly.

The FBI affidavit did not name Sheffield, referring only to a professional athlete and his wife, and did not say whether the videotapes actually existed or whether Mosley's alleged remarks might have been part of a bluff.

According to that affidavit, Mosley first contacted Williams on Nov. 3, and Williams secretly taped several conversations with him over the next week.

In the first conversation, "Mosley stated that he was very upset and concerned about the tapes," the affidavit says. "Mosley further stated that he wished to speak to Individual A about reform and her moral standing."

Mosley later suggested he be hired for $20,000 to serve as a counselor for the athlete's wife and said he would destroy the tapes, according to the affidavit. At one point he told Williams "someone else would have called the tabloids and could have made millions," according to the affidavit.

Finally, on Nov. 11, Mosley called Williams and said he wanted $20,000 immediately and provided Williams with a bank account number and said the money should be sent by wire, according to the affidavit. Mosley was arrested four days later.

Mosley is known in the Chicago area for stepping in as a spokesman for families hit by tragedies and speaking as a community activist after the E2 nightclub stampede last year. He was charged with bank fraud in 1999, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year and placed on probation for five years.

Here is her bio:

It seems like yesterday when 3-year-old Deleon Richards was known as The Young Gospel Sensation. Over two decades later, Deleon is a seasoned veteran with many recordings to her credit.

Deleon, the youngest artist ever signed to a major Gospel label, has been singing professionally for almost a lifetime. Recording, writing and co-producing with some of the best in the music industry, Jeffrey "J Dub" Walker of Dub's World Production, Jerry Peters, Brian McKnight, Tim Minor, Percy Bady, Tonex, Warren Campbell, Raymond Tisdale w/Tisway Productions and Fred Hammond, all having a great influence in her musical career.

Born September 18, 1976 in the suburbs of Chicago, Deleon started singing at the age of 5 before 20,000 people at a Chicago Gospel Festival. She has performed for numerous political and religious figures, including President Ronald Reagan. At age 9, she became the youngest person ever to be nominated for a Grammy: the previous record holder was Michael Jackson.

DeLeon contributes her estounding growth to a loving and dedicated mother, Deborah "Debbie" Richards, a singer in her own right, and one that loves the Lord. She impressed upon DeLeon to always keep God first and there would be no end to the heights she could achieve.

In the early 1980's Deleon was the youngest Gospel artist ever signed with a major recording company. She toured for the first time at age five, opening in Japan for the Mighty Clouds, which sparked the beginning of her musical travel throughout the U.S., Germany, Europe, Asia, West Indies, etc., as well as regular concert performances for the military and USO.

1986 was the beginning of the exciting film and television career, making numerous appearances on the Trinity Broadcasting Network, 700 Club, NBC, CBS, ABC, WGN and a variety of cable networks. In the early 1990's she landed a regular role on ABC's television drama Brewster Place starring Oprah Winfrey.

Deleon was awarded one of the Most Outstanding Role Models in America by one of the most prominent Men's organizations in America. She has been featured in almost every national magazine including People, Sports Illustrated, In Style, Ebony, Billboard, USA Today and many more. She won the GMWA Award for Excellence and was nominated for a Stellar Award, just to name a few.

With over 2 decades of performing experience in this seasoned artist' repertoire, Deleon has also shared the stage with the likes of Pattil LaBelle, Shirley Ceasar, Lou Rawles, The Winans, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Sandi Patti, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Al Green Joni Erickson, Tada, and many others.

Deleon writes much of her own music and is President of her own company, DeMari Publishing and Entertainment, Inc. She also supports the Gary Sheffield Foundation, founded by her husband; New York Yankee Outfielder, Gary Sheffield. This organization is dedicated to rebuilding the spirit of our youth; exactly what Deleon's ministry is all about. Deleon says while her accomplishments have been great, there is nothing greater than her relationship with Jesus Christ. No amateur to holding large audiences captive with her voice, Deleon sang the National Anthem at game 5 of the New York Knicks/Toronto Raptors Playoff Game held at Madison Square Garden. Most recently, she performed flawlessly at RFK Stadium to a crowd of 80,000 people at the Bobby Jones Gospel Fest.

Deleon's music is destined to bridge generation gaps with a sound that appeals to true gospel fans as well as reaching the younger and more contemporary listeners. She will be breaking new ground with on of the greatest and most versatile recordings ever in Gospel music today. Those who listen will be blessed beyond imagination.

First of all I'm mad that this all happened ten years ago and it is now being made public.

My guess is she ended the relationship at 18 to get married. But the other thing is we haven't seen the video or what kind of sex was involved so maybe technically she was a virgin.

This story was one of the first they ran on the local news last night because of Yankee Gary Sheffield. They didn't even mention R Kelly at first. The report was that Sheffield and his wife were being blackmailed, and the man doing it was arrested. His agent said that Sheffield loves and will stand by his wife and that they will not be extorted.

I feel bad for Sheffield and his wife. I'm not sure how long they have been married. Ten years? They seem like decent people who Mosley is trying to extort. I just hope that this tape (if it exists) doesn't wind up on the internet like so many others in the past.

If I remember the article correctly, they were married in 2000 and dated for a year prior to that. She and I are around the same age...27 or 28.

Man, when I was a little girl, I had her record. It was called, "I'm a King's Kid"...that junk used to be jamming!!!

Thank you. So four years of marriage and five years or so together. I was trying to figure out the chronology of this whole situation.

Yeah, DeLeon is a gospel artist. She ws also known by her full name-DeLeon Richards. If any of you saw the original Broadway version of "Mama I Want To Sing" back in the 80's, she was the little girl who had the lead role.

If anyone is a Pastor Paula White fan, DeLeon is a regular on The Paula White Today show along with Charrise Strawberry-Baseball Player Darryl Strawberry's wife. Both couples attend Randy and Paula White's Without Walls Church in Florida.

Fake R. Kelly Story Published in Newspaper

2 hours, 55 minutes ago Entertainment - AP Music

NEW YORK - A fake story about singer R. Kelly circulated on the Internet and attributed to The Associated Press was picked up by The Miami Herald and then sent by the Knight-Ridder/Tribune wire to newspapers across the country.

E! Online Photo

The story falsely contended that Kelly, who is facing 14 counts of child pornography in Chicago, had been accused of making sexual advances to the underage sister of the singer Ashanti.

Herald executive editor Tom Fiedler said Wednesday the story was passed along to an editor of the Herald's celebrity news by someone else in the newsroom. Fiedler said he believed the person picked it up off the Internet because it "had the appearance of an Associated Press story or seemed to be attributed to AP. The editor took it and unfortunately failed to verify it moved on the AP wire."

The Herald's procedures and ethics require "that any item that comes to us be verified as to its source," particularly if the source is the Internet, Fiedler said.

The Herald in a short story Wednesday said the story was a hoax and had never appeared on the AP wire. The Knight-Ridder/Tribune wire ran a correction Tuesday night.

The big question is if the molestor peed on her.

That's what I want to know.

Because ever since my buddy Dave Chapelle did his version of "I'm gonna pee on you", that's the first image that pops up into my head.

I love blanket statements.

<---lives on the south side of Chicago.

vanda 11-18-2004 02:15 PM

I have to take issue with that comment. Being a native southsider myself, not all of the "church circle " women are freaks. I don't know what churches you frequent but you definitelydo not speak for them all. R. more than likely met her somewhere other than church and she like so many others sadly get caught up in all that is Robert:rolleyes:

the list goes on...

On a side note if it ain't you then DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT!!! If a chick is a freak let her be a freak she's not going to broadcast it to the world. I knew back in day the sooooo many "virgins" it wasn't even funny. Most of the church girls lost their "virginity" to that brother that was also in the church right with them. The Skate parties, retreats, ski trips, etc. all had folks hooking up and then coming back denying that anything ever happened but 4 months later somebody pregnant -so stop trippin!!

Good grief! This sure is a whole lot of generalization!

I think some people just expressed how interesting your blanket statement was.

That would be like me saying all Chicago brothas are some triflin', ho-ish, disease-ridden, deadbeat dogs. Now any thinking individual would comprehend what a gross generalization such a statement is. And I'm sure there may be a fair amount of brothas that fall into this category but I'm sure not ALL.

You're right saying it's a gross generalization, but some days it seems like the honest to God truth :D

The NERVE!!! BS from a "False Prophet"

Mosley reportedly claimed he had a videotape of Sheffield's wife having sex with another man.

Authorities say Mosley called Sheffield's business manager and demanded money in exchange for the tape.

In an exclusive interview today, Mosley told his side of the story to ABC 7's Ben Bradley.

Derrick Mosley has gone from being a convicted felon to working as a community activist. Now he is back behind bars speaking for the first time about the alleged shakedown of a professional baseball player.

"My motives were altruistic. There was never any malicious intent," Mosley said.

Derrick Mosley says he was looking to do some good. He wanted to "help" not "hurt" New York Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield and his wife, DeLeon. Mosley says he came across videotape that showed DeLeon having sex with Chicago R and B singer R. Kelly. It's a tape that was supposedly shot more than 10 years ago.

BEN: "So you were trying to help Gary Sheffield's wife?"

DERRICK MOSLEY: "Without getting too specific, my motives were to actually be of help, never to hurt. Never to get anybody to think they were being blackmailed or anything along those lines."

Derrick Mosley admits to taking the videotape to Sheffield's agent, Rufus Williams, earlier this month. Williams went to the feds after he says Derrick Mosley demanded $20-thousand dollars to destroy the tapes and be hired to "minister" to Sheffield's wife.

"He proclaims himself a reverend and suggested she needs atonement for the crimes she committed, the moral crimes," Rufus Williams said.

"This whole thing as it relates to extortion, it's totally taken out of context. Even when money was mentioned in a couple of conversations, it was never a threat posed to him," Derrick Mosley said.

Mosley claims to have turned his life around after a 1999 conviction for bank fraud. But nearly two years ago attorneys for R. Kelly asked for and received a restraining order against Mosley. They claim "he demanded he be paid $50,000 for no apparent purpose." A letter from Mosley indicates he had hoped to be hired to put a positive spin on R. Kelly's legal troubles.

BEN: "Can't people call into question your motivations when you're asking for money to speak in favor or something, as an activist?"

MOSLEY: "No, I don't think that's what I was asking to do. I was asking to speak on this person's behalf... I think it's a difference."

In press releases, and in statements, over the last several years Derrick Mosley has referred to himself as "reverend." Now he confirms that he never received any formal religious training and is "not" a pastor.

Nonetheless, Mosley says he has "ministered to many" over the years and believes his is a helping voice in the community.

Jailhouse interview Part 2

This is part 2 of an exclusive jailhouse interview with the man at the center of an alleged extortion plot --involving one of baseball's biggest stars and his wife.

"Even when money was mentioned to him it was never a threat to him," said Derrick Mosley.

Derrick Mosley is a Chicago activist who is accused of trying to blackmail New York Yankees slugger Gary Sheffield and his wife.

ABC 7's Ben Bradley spoke with Mosley in an exclusive interview at the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Derrick Mosley says for the last several years his mission has been to help those in need.

He claims that's exactly what he was doing when the feds busted him for blackmail.

"At no point did I ever say, 'If you give me this, I will not do this.' As far as anything that could damage them, that never ever happened," Mosley said.

Derrick Mosley calls the sex tape he says he saw "repulsive." The feds say he also saw an opportunity.

The players in the story are all high profile. Mosley claims the sex tape features Chicago R&B star R. Kelly having sex with the now wife of Yankee's outfielder Gary Sheffield and another woman.

"It was dealing with a moral issue as well as an issue that could be quite damaging. With that, I sincerely came forward -- and the evidence will show -- it's more of me trying to help than anything that could be misconstrued as extortion or blackmail. Never," Mosley said.

The feds claim to have Mosley on tape demanding the baseball player's agent "hire" him to "minister" to Sheffield's wife.

Court documents claim Mosley said "...$20,000 ain't nothing compared to what he could have gained if he was sleazy."

"He proclaims himself a reverend and suggested she needs atonement for the crimes she committed, the moral crimes," said Rufus Williams, Gary Sheffield's agent.

"As a matter of fact I am so aware of what blackmail and extortion is, I would always be mindful of that. I would have never come forward and tried to pull that on anybody," Mosley said.

Mosley is familiar with the law because this isn't the first-time he's been behind bars. Back in 1999 he was convicted of bank fraud. In 2000, he returned to Chicago and began to gain steam as a community activist.

He would show-up a crime scenes, he spoke-out against the owners of the E-2 nightclub. Mosley was never shy about seeking the media spotlight.

On press releases he advertised himself as a "reverend" even though he is "not."

"I never get caught-up in titles. All I know is Derrick Mosley is someone who has come from turbulance and made great strides to turn his life around. My track record once again speaks for itself," Mosley said.

The ballplayer's wife who was supposedly videotaped 10 years ago is from Chicago. Her mom now lives in the suburbs. She says her daughter has "found God" since that tape was made.

Derrick Mosley appeared in court on Thursday afternoon where judge upheld the charges against him. He will be back in court in the next several days for a bond hearing. In the meantime he remains in federal custody.

LAS VEGAS - Gary Sheffield and his beautiful gospel-singing wife tried to get back to their life yesterday, after she trashed an alleged extortionist's claims that she engaged in three-way sex.
The couple stepped out in public for the first time last night since the lurid news broke, sitting four rows from ringside for a boxing match at the Mandalay Bay Hotel, where their longtime friend Winky Wright defended his WBC/WBA super welterweight title.

"I'm not going to really comment on what's been going on," said Sheffield. "I issued a statement and I'm just going to let that speak for us right now. I really don't want to get into any of it."

But his 28-year-old wife, DeLeon Richards, hit back on her Web site late Friday, trashing the claims that she was in a sex video with singer R. Kelly and another woman.

"The first thing I would like to say, I have never been involved in any acts concerning three people in my entire life nor would I ever," Richards wrote on the site.

She did admit, however, that she had "strayed from the Lord," and her mother told the Daily News last week that DeLeon had a teenaged romance with R. Kelly a decade ago.

"When I was a teenager, I strayed from the Lord and my upbringing for a short period but thanks to God's loving Grace he quickly reeled me back in," Richards wrote.

She apologized for "any of the things you have seen or heard in the media," adding that she lives a clean life. "I cannot change what people think but only care about what God knows," she wrote. "I have never used drugs. I have never drank alcohol nor have I ever smoked."

Sheffield has stood by his wife after self-described community activist, Derrick Mosley, 38, allegedly approached Sheffield's agent claiming to have a tape of Richards engaged in a ménage à trois and demanding $20,000.

The agent taped the call and Mosley was busted on extortion charges. Mosley has denied trying to blackmail the couple, saying he was just trying to help them.

Richards saw it very differently.

"This man did not care about us, only the money he thought he could get from us," she wrote on her Web site. "He refused to produce any proof to substantiate anything he was saying against me. The only thing he cared about was convincing us he could make people believe these false charges."

Authorities have not seen the tape and are not sure it even exists.

Asked last night how his family was dealing with the ordeal, Sheffield said, "We're handling things fine. We're doing okay."

DableST_1 11-22-2004 02:52 PM

When I first heard about this I was in AWE, in SHOCK, in like WHAT THE?????  Why??? Because I personally KNOW Derrick Mosley,,,He is a WONDERFUL musician, he played for me when I was little girl* he is a pianist, I am a singer* , we were in the choir, and he was VERY close with my older brother. He had a troublesome child hood, according to my mom, but I NEVER EVER in a million years would have thought he would have sunk to THIS low.....

As far as Deleon *Richards* Sheffield is concerned, THAT shocked me as well, I HAVE ALL of her CD's *well her FIRST two that I have are actually Albums* and I am just like......WOW,,,she was the first Album I have purchased with my own money. She was like a little idol to me when I was little girl and I was kind of surprised that she was ever with R-Kelly.

Derrick need to be ashamed of himself, I know his mother VERY WELL, and he was not brought up like that He comes from a GOOD, CARING, SAVED family.....so not only do I pray for the Sheffield's family, but I pray for the Mosely family as well His mom is the sweetest thing on earth, I even call her mama when I see her b/c she reminds me of my mom......The thing is that I JUST saw Derrick a couple of months ago, when I had to perform at my old church *The church we use to attend together* and I was telling my husband how I am proud of him and how he really turned his life around... If and when the TRUTH comes out, and he is guilty of this then I hope they punish him severely, b/c thats just not right.......
