TheFacebook.com

So, a lot of colleges have it now. Mine, of course, doesn't. What is it like?

Unregistered- 11-15-2004 09:31 PM

It's similar to Friendster.com (and those sites related to it), but it's definitely geared more toward current students, recent alumni, and faculty/staff -- especially since you need a campusname.edu address. I got lucky because my campus email still works.

Too bad this wasn't around when I was in school. You have the options to post your schedule, what dorm you're living in, etc. Too bad we didn't have this when I was in school. I sooooo could have been stalkeroo.

HTF did Hawaii get on Facebook before 'Bama?

Anyway, I'm on there. So anyone who wants to Facebook me, just look under Hawaii and type in Sandy. I should pop up.

kk_bama 11-15-2004 10:02 PM

because no one here uses them newfangled computer contraptions!

lol, no, I guess they just haven't gotten enough requests for one at Bama yet.

breathesgelatin 11-16-2004 01:17 AM

It's a lot of fun. I ditto what Sandy said about it, it's more fun for current undergrads.

It's stalkerrific, I love it.

tunatartare 11-16-2004 01:56 AM

It's the best-known method of procrastination out there.

It's funny how all these freshman and sophomore year boys are adding me to their friends list.

One day all the AGD-Delta Sigma NMs and collegians found me online, and then next thing you know I have a whole crapload of new friends. Heh, I still gots game. Mwahahaha.

Why couldn't the boys of 7 years ago look like the boys now? DAMN.

Your university might offer the "permanent forwarding email address" - like mine does. So I have an email address ending with @alumni.ufl.edu. And I just registered on thefacebook, so it works.

Check on your alumni homepage to see if it's offered.

XOMichelle 11-16-2004 03:26 PM

facebook is fun, but it came out the year after I graduated. can't do much stalking that way.

LOL, I did meet a grad student on Facebook who was actually in some of my undergrad classes.

I still shake my head at the younguns!

jharb 11-16-2004 04:21 PM

This site is so addicting...I just sit there and browse with nothing better to do! :p

kk_bama 11-16-2004 04:43 PM

I just sent in all the info The Facebook asks for if your school is wanting one. Let's hope it helps!

FAB*SpiceySpice 11-16-2004 08:22 PM

The Facebook phenomenon has taken over Mizzou...it seems like EVERYONE is on there.

It's so stupid but so fun. I love finding new groups to join, the dumber the better. :D

Right now there is this big trend of groups formed for our greek week pairings...it's so dorky and pointless but I think pretty much every pairing has one.

It's also fun to "stalk", I found my boyfriend from FIFTH GRADE on there...wtf?!

This site is evil, seriously. I get nothing done anymore.

XOMichelle 11-17-2004 03:33 PM

So I was at a bar for triva night last night and my friend was like, oh Mark Zuckerberg (creator of thefacebook) was going to come with us, but he's 20. I was all bummed. I wanted to meet the guy!

OleMissGlitter 11-18-2004 05:28 PM

_Opi_ 11-20-2004 01:03 PM

Just got invited. Looks kinda fun.

kk_bama 11-20-2004 10:50 PM

Still no facebook for Bama.

Hopefully soon! :(

GPhiLlama 11-20-2004 11:35 PM

Facebook rocks! I'm addicted.

Corsulian 11-21-2004 03:04 PM

There's a mixture at GMU of people who think Facebook is great and some who just haven't gotten a chance to sign up, and then those that dislike things that are 'trendy'

lyrica9 12-05-2004 11:41 AM

has anyone else had the evil idea that it could be used for informal recruiting?

We just got a huge lecture about having PNMs on our friends list, even if they actually ARE our friends. We're afraid of dirty rushing accusations.

Also, an unnamed sorority on my campus is on social probation because of Facebook profiles.

Taualumna 12-05-2004 12:28 PM

There are 3 Canadian schools on facebook.com now. They are McGill, U of T and UBC. A friend of mine who is an undergrad at McGill just invited me to use it. I signed up, but everyone seems to be an undergrad! I think I'm one of few alumnae who are on there!

that's crazy!
how could they possibly be on probation because of their profiles??!

Underage drinking directly related to the sorority and possible hazing, featured on several Facebook profiles. Yikes.

ETA- I think it's probation from their nationals, not the school.

sugar and spice 12-05-2004 03:56 PM

Mel and I discussed the fact that this makes it pretty easy to figure out which sororities the Rho Chis are from, too. Even if they don't mention it on their profile -- scroll down to their friends' list and page through it and chances are you can figure it out.

You're right because if you're in a sorority on Facebook it's pretty likely that 90% of their friends are their sorority sisters. I know mine are.

DolphinChicaDDD 12-05-2004 06:41 PM

my grad school just got added! and right in time for finals!
yes! i now have another thing to distract me from studying during finals!

James 12-05-2004 06:50 PM

I am not criticising . . .

Is it a good idea to put that much of your personal information out there with your picture?

Isn't it an advertising scheme also so that you will end up going into advertisers demographic studies and lists?

aphibeach 12-05-2004 06:55 PM

my school isnt on there yet :(

Kevlar281 12-05-2004 07:39 PM

I don’t know if there is a magic number of requests needed to get onto Facebook but the posters on my school’s message board have been sending them a barrage of requests; no luck yet though. It’s pretty irritating not being on there considering we have a student body of 35,000, are located in the fourth largest city in America and have a student body ranked as the most diverse in the nation. I’d like to think some of these facts would make us ideal for a site such at this.

Texas schools on Facebook:
Baylor
SMU
Texas A&M
Texas Christian University
Texas State University
Texas Tech
University of Texas
University of Texas at Arlington
University of Texas at San Antonio

UH, no.

For some reason, people seem to think that because the facebook is limited to your school, it's okay to put up your address/phone number/whatever and you won't have any problems. This is ridiculous.

However, I would like to point out that if somebody's smart enough or desperate enough, they'll be able to get your info anyway -- when I was younger, some guy managed to figure out my full name, address and phone number based on my email address. At my school alone we've got the Greek stalker book and the student directory -- it's not like the stuff on the facebook is all that much different. I'm sure that it wouldn't be that hard for someone to figure out who I am simply based on what I've posted on GC -- and it would be especially easy to stalk me last year, when I lived in the house. Face it -- your info is not as hard to find as you probably think it is.

But try to give your stalkers a little work to do on their own. ;) I would definitely not recommend putting up your address or home phone number on that thing.
