what a stupid, stupid thing to do. it's good that he's taking responsibility, but still. i hope the fame's not going to his head and he doesn't start doing other things he shouldn't be doing. he has such a great career ahead of him, he shouldn't chance ruining it

James 11-08-2004 10:44 PM

It didn't say what his blood alcohol level was. Keep in mind that some states will give someone underage a DUI for even one drink.

valkyrie 11-08-2004 10:50 PM

Why don't people charged with crimes know how to keep quiet? Who gets charged with something and then talks about it to the press? Even if you're going to plead guilty, it really weakens your bargaining power.

My guess is that he's more worried about how this will affect his fan base and his marketability than what he's going to get from the courts? Not that I really blame him . . .

I think a certain part of it is rumor/spin control...if he gets out there with his side of the story first, people can't make up their own stories, and it can't turn into something uglier than what it was.

Whatever happens in court will happen; right now he's probably just trying to protect his sponsorships and his image. One DUI won't ruin that image, but someone else stretching the truth about it could.

That is true. I don't know what Maryland's laws are, but I do know that they're pretty strict about drinking and driving. The article did say that the officer saw signs of intoxication, so I assume that means that he was at least a little drunk.

DeltaSigStan 11-09-2004 01:03 PM

I bet he said the following thing to the cops while getting arrested:

"Do you know who I am?"

When you say that......you're going to jail....

Yeah, in MD if you're underage and your breathalyzer is anything other than 0.0 you get a DUI.

James 11-09-2004 02:55 PM

Poor kid. He should have replied, well I thought the alcohol would have worn off by then.

Nice of them to cite him for almost everything they could.

As far as showing signs of intoxication, all the cop had to do was smell it. As SSS1365 said, all he has to do is blow something, anything, over the limit he is guilty of DUI, so its an easy ticket for a cop.

Jadey28 11-09-2004 03:12 PM

The article said he was in Salisbury, which in the capital place of Maryland to nail people for drinking and driving. There is little hardly any crime in that town, so the police have nothing better to do than to wait for someone to run a stop sign. I wonder if Phelps was anywhere near Salisbury State College. If so, he was just a sitting duck waiting to get caught. Everyone I know of that went to that college has a DUI!

I saw him on Jay Leno one night and he kinda seemed like an asshole. I dunno though...

James 11-09-2004 10:40 PM

6 gold medals by 19 makes him a bit of a celebrity. I would be surprised if he wasn't a bit of a prick.

maybe he just needs a boyfriend.

KillarneyRose 11-10-2004 12:39 AM

He's a local boy so practically every time he sneezes it's widely covered in the media and I've never seen or heard anything that would indicate he's a jerk. He actually seems like a very nice kid; does lots of community service and such.

Not trying to minimize what he did, but I think he probably just made a mistake countless other 19 year olds have made and since he's famous it's news.

krazy 11-10-2004 11:39 AM

Why is he drinking?

He should be training, he is going to get fat and suck in 2008.

madmax 11-10-2004 04:38 PM

Give him a break. Drunk driving should be legal. There should be a third lane with padded walls designated for drunk drivers.

I really don't see what the big deal is.

I don't agree with driving while intoxicated, but thousands of people do it every day.

But ooh, he's a celebrity. A MINOR, so it's the freaking end of the world!

Don't care. I'd still hit it.

Amy, I should rephrase my OP.

It should have said:

I'd buy him alcohol and get him liquored up (since he's underage) and THEN I'd hit it.

Tee hee hee har har har.

CutiePie2000 11-11-2004 02:41 AM

Yeesh, with all his money, why doesn't he hire a driver to drive him around out on the town? Then he can indulge to his heart's content and barf into a bucket in privacy on the way home.
