Wedding Song Ideas

Hello Sorors and Sisterfriends,

I need a little brainstorming help. A friend of mine is getting married in July. She and her fiance' would like some ideas for songs to be played at the wedding. They've both agreed not to have popular songs played such as Jagged Edge's "Let's get married" or the song "Happily ever after". They want more of soft, love ballad types. The only thing I thought of off the top of my head was Luther Vandross. I guess they want some songs from the 70's or 80's (by the way, the bride is 34 to give you an idea). I know they want "Flesh of my flesh" sung, so any Gospel suggestions are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Here are some of my favorites (no particular order):

1. Never Felt This Way - Brian McKnight
2. Whenever You Call - Brian McKnight & Mariah Carey
3. So In Love - UNLV
4. Ribbon in the Sky - Stevie Wonder
5. Together Forever - Shai
6. Discovery - Brian McKnight
7. Every Beat of My Heart - Brian McKnight
(Okay, any love song by Brian McKnight will do-- he's my favorite!)
8. Light A Candle - Jamie Fox
9. Stairway to Heaven - O'Jays
10. All I'll Ever Ask - Freddie Jackson
11. I Will Always Love You - Troop
12. No One Else Comes Close - Joe

I'm a FOOL for romantic ballads, so I have many more where these came from. Let me know if you're still stumped for ideas.

I don't want popular songs, like the kind we hear on the radio all the time played at my wedding either.(when and if that big day comes http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif...but I do know that I want my first dance with my husband to be to a Natalie Cole remake of her Dad's song..."When I fall in Love." Oooooh-I love that song! And I don't hear too many people playing anything besides Unforgettable, but everyone uses that...and I mean you want to be different and do something that is really Unforgettable!

c&c1913 05-26-2000 06:09 PM

Wow! Thanks for the quick response. I like slow jams too, but the ones I like aren't appropriate for a wedding! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif (MsCrimsonCream- i don't want to hear it! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif)

The 411- I can tell that you are a big Brian McKnight fan! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I know it's cheesy but what about "You & I" (Remember:Michael sang it at Thelma's Wedding on Good Times.) Just Kidding! Seriously though, here's a couple:

Beauty-Dru Hill
You-Jessie Powell

I'll strain my brain and see what else I come up with.
(p.s. wasn't Thelma's wedding every little black girl's dream?) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

I have one but I don't know if I will be of much help because I don't know who sings it. "ALWAYS" it's sung by an man and a woman.

DableST_1 05-26-2000 07:11 PM

Curiousity, I know which song you are talking about. I hope to sing that song to my husband one day.(If that day ever comes that is) The song "Always" is performed by Atlantic Star.

I only have one song right now but I know I can come up with many more. This is one of my favorite old time jams: "You and I" by Stevie Wonder. I love that song.

April Showers --Dru Hill (sung to the bride)
For You I Will --Monica
I Believe in You & Me --Whitney Houston

How about We Must Be In Love by pure Soul

Salience 05-27-2000 11:33 AM

Hey, y'all! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

How COULD you forget the seminal wedding song of the 1970's???? Or 1980, Mom and I aren't sure.

"When We Get Married," by Larry Graham? HELLLOOOOOOO??
I love that song.

BTW kudos to your friend for NOT wanting the unromantic New Jack crud that's out there.

If some man said "we're not getting any younger..." OOOOOOOOH! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

ROFL

what about "Just Be My Lady"?
I might be making that up. I don't remember if that's the actual title of the song, and I don't remember who sings it, but I know it's a man.

Thanks everyone. I printed a list of the songs and my friend loved it. She said she doesn't know how she could have forgotten half of the songs named.

Nia99 05-27-2000 11:33 PM

Hey, I'm not sure if this song has been posted or not. But a favorite song of mines is "You are so beautiful"--by Babyface. I am not sure if that is the name of the actual song. But Babyface sang it on that episode of MARTIN when Martin and Gina got married. Thanks. I read alot of wonderful and creative ideas.

sweetthang24 05-28-2000 03:16 AM

Hey C&C....... I was listening to the radio the other day and a really old sing came on and I thought that it would be perfect ofr a wedding. I will use it if i ever get married. Well anyway it was My Endless Love by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross! I think it is a beautiful song.

sweetthang24 05-28-2000 03:19 AM

OOPS! THATS "OLD SONG" AND "FOR A"! Sorry my fault with the typos.

CuRiOuSiTy 05-28-2000 04:52 AM

DableST_1,
Thanks so much for letting us know who sings "Always." I love that song my aunt and my dad sung it for my cousin's wedding. It was really nice.

BatonRougeDelta 05-30-2000 10:08 AM

My bridesmaids walked down the aisle to "I Believe in You and Me"- Whitney Houston

and My Father and I walked down to the music of-"Never Felt This Way"

It was beautiferous http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Hi everyone

This isn't an old song, but I have a suggestion. "Notheing has ever felt like this..." by Rachel Farrell and Wil Downing.

It's so pretty.

God Bless

Hunydip

Hunydip 05-30-2000 11:45 AM

Oops!

"Nothing has ever felt like this..."

The album is entitled Rachel Farrel released in 1992.

Monique 05-30-2000 01:21 PM

How about some songs from shai old record. The first one they put out. Or u can look at Tamia's record.

CrimsonAmbitions 05-30-2000 01:36 PM

How about "Endless Love" by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie.

aspiration 05-31-2000 12:36 AM

C&C 1913, I know I'm probably late posting on this topic & I know what your friend is going through, as far as all the decisions. I do wedding coordinating in my area & this is a big "decision making" time for her. These are my suggestions:
"My Forever Love" by Levert
"One In A Million" by Larry Graham
"You and I"- O'Brien
"Our Love", "Inseparable" by Natalie Cole
"We Both Deserve Each Others Love" by LTD
"Still In Love" by Brian McKnight

EbonyStar03 06-02-2000 01:36 AM

My top 3 favorites:

1. If This World Were Mine- (Luther Vandross and somebody else???)

2. So in love (All for One) I know it's old, but it's still good!!

3. When I'm With You (Tony Terri)

I didn't wanna post on the forum until I could name the song that I was thinking of, I couldn't think of the name for anything....
but yes, it was "When I'm with You"--Tony Terry

Someone sung that at a cousin's wedding and it was absolutely beautiful!

Hello my devastating sorors! I would suggest "Ribbon in the Sky" by Stevie Wonder! It is so beautiful. I would also suggest "Beautiful Black Princess" by the Whitehead Bros.

the delta girl 07-19-2000 08:21 PM

Hello. I have a few suggestions:

Always and Forever-Whistle
For you-Kenny Lattimore
Cheers to You-Playa

Freddy Jackson is always good, specifically 'You are my lady'
Joy-Blackstreet
I hope this helps. Congratulations to the bride and groom.

c&c1913 07-19-2000 08:29 PM

Thanks to all those who replied, but I hate to say it. The wedding has been called off and from the looks of it permanently!!! It seems the groom got um, how should I say it...."caught out there". My friend is hurting (they were together 5 years), but we'll help her through it.

Ladies of DST:

Just surfing other sites - hope you don't mind! When I meet that lucky lady I plan to sing Life Begins With You by DeBarge.

"... Many a times my world seemed upside down. You came along and filled me with hope for tomorrow. You gave me joy and showed we just what love is all about. . ."

Something like that . . . Good Luck!

carebear 07-20-2000 09:59 PM

I'm sorry to hear that the wedding was called off...I'm sure she is just devastated...but its good she found out BEFORE they walked down the aisle...I'll pray for her strength during this time...

bellydancer 07-20-2000 11:28 PM

Hey,
I know you might not remember this but Princess Di used this song at her wedding. It is "Moments In Love" by the Art of Noise"
which is still popular. Also "For You" by Kenny Lattimore. And lets not forget that Eric Benet & Tamia song. Well hope you find what you are looking for.

tickledpink 07-20-2000 11:38 PM

I was about to post c&c when I read your update. Sorry to hear that, but as carebear said, it's good that she found out now.

Professor, I know what song you were talking about --- see, I'm not the only one that listens (ahem, listened)to Debarge.

the411 05-03-2001 04:52 PM

I have fallen head over heels in love with a song by Amel Larrieux entitled "Make Me Whole." It is PERFECT for a wedding--it'll make HIM cry!

I LOOOOOOVE "Moments in Lov!" I'm trying to get the extended version that radio stations love to play. Man, you got my fingers itching now, I love that song so much.
