Volunterering for LXA
 

Have you ever Voluntered for an Alum position with IHQ, filled out the information and never received anything back?

I and others of Alum Status Have and never Heard a word back from IHQ!:(

Isnt that why We as Alums give our time?

Isnt, the reason We do is for the Love of LXA?

Isnt, it a thought to give a little releif to IHQ and the Staff People to give some releif to?

Isnt it an idea for the load and dollars to be taken off of the shoulders of IHQ?

So, have anyone else done the same thing as I have done and Volunteered and heard nothing back?:rolleyes:

I've found that IHQ is very inconsistent. I'll receive C and C one year and some other newsletters then I won't get anything. The funniest thing was when I was living in Gamma Zeta, whenever a new C & C came out there would be about 150 magazines left in the mail. IHQ thought our alumni still lived in the chapter house, even though some graduated over a decade ago :rolleyes: . I would have thought sending that many magazines to a single address would have appeared on someones radar.

But everyone knows my stance on IHQ, I'm not going to say anything again, although it is easily found in a couple of the past posts.

*cough* hire more experienced people *cough* :p


I think that IHQ should really start treating brothers and alumni less like former college students and more like shareholders in the fraternity. After all, our fraternity is made of people, not some object. Each of us has an equal share and say in our fraternity. I would hope IHQ would realize that and perhaps make a little better effort to keep the "shareholders" happy and keep them investing in the fraternity.

Whenever there's a mention of IHQ, I like to put it in the perspective of our own alumni association (of which I am the president) and try to extrapolate / interpolate. I know we do 99% of the work with a few members (<1%) but if even one other brother offered his help, we would jump at the chance to get someone else involved and pick up some of the load.

Maybe I'm a little too involved myself because sometimes, when things get going heavy, I wonder how the folks in Indy do it when it's almost a full-time job for me just running an AA for one little chapter a thousand miles away.

So if the chapters can't get enough of their own brothers to even help themselves, who is left to realistically help IHQ?

Yeah I've filled out the volunteer form and sent it in...never
heard anything back.

And at the time, I only lived about 20 miles from IHQ
(just outside Indy).

But in my past XP, alumni involvement is a 2-edged-sword.
There are some who would be so excited to come in and
help, but once they got there, they'd run everybody else
CRAZY....they tend to want to "run the show", tell everybody
else how to do their job better. It's just natural.

Its a balancing act....alumni involvement....and not an easy one.

I agree Joiner, but if you take enough time to volunteer and fill out a form, the very least IHQ should do is send a response that they received the form. After all, alumni give alot of $$$ to IHQ, it only makes sense to make an effort to give them respect.

It is a big deal to some people to take their time and help and not hear anything back. Plus, on a financial side, it only makes sense to reach out to the alumni. A $.29 stamp and a 3 minute letter could very well mean a $100, $200 or $1000 contribution.

Gamma Zeta, do you volunteer for anything? Or do you just bitch all the time and argree with those who bitch about IHQ? I'm really tired of your meaningless writings trying to show how "Lambda Chi" you are but what are you doing now to help the Fraternity?

And what the hell is a .29 stamp for, a postcard? When is the last time you sent a letter? A first class stamp is .37.

I like to see brothers writing here to try to accomplish something but too many are all talk and no action. And you're the most talk of anyone I've ever seen on GC. In fact you don't seem to be anything other than talk.

What have you volunteered for?

Sorry I don't have a personal post office in my room, but I think a post card stamp is either $.29 or $.19. How hard is it to send a postcard saying "Thank You" we got your letter?

I'll tell you what I volunteered for. I've given over four years of my life and much of my hard earned money to LXA. So you better believe I'm going to bitch when I want, about whatever I want when it comes to our fraternity. I will bitch all God damn day if I want. I've earned that right. I've put too much blood, sweat, tears and $$$ into it, and if I don't like or disagree with something, I'm going to talk about it, no matter what you or the other sheep say.

This is just common sense. Alumni volunteer, fill out a form, and never hear anything again. That is serious. You don't think that's a problem? You're more brainwashed than I thought.

Now Jono, go drink the official LXA kool-aid like the rest of the sheep.

In other words, you drank beer for four years, had a great time, and now you're an expert.

You are the quintessential disenfranchised member that I wrote about in our little newsletter - the one you took exception to - because it hit so close to home.

You know what? I was RIGHT! And I stand by that story because you have proved me right. What love do you have for Gamma Zeta? Are you helping them? No. You are not.

You don't help anyone. You just bitch and call those of us who do volunteeer "sheep". That alone proves who you really are.

You contribute nothing to this forum, your chapter, or the general fraternity. Sorry, but it's true, at least the way I see it.

Gentlemen,

The Alumni Advisory Committee was formed several years ago at the International level to give alumni an opportunity to serve the Fraternity. One notable success was the preparation and acceptance of the Ceremony for Alumni and Graduating Seniors. Another ongoing effort is the preparation for the Centennial in 2009.

Many other aspects of the Alumni Advisory Committee effort have not proceeded forward, but that is about to change. Ernie Vargo (Akron '78) has agreed to serve as the new Chair. Ernie is a dedicated brother with a long history of service to the Fraternity and he plans to move forward aggressively. Yes, as a matter of fact I am an expert.

There are two types of people that join fraternities:

1. Leaders. Strong individuals that want to join an organization to help and put their own personal mark on it. To make it something better by contributing their own experiences and knowledge. I am a leader.

2. Sheep. Week individuals that have no personality, that want to join an organization because they wish to be told what is good and right. Because they have no experiences or self will, they look to a club to be told what to do. You are a sheep.

See, your little newsletter has done so much harm that you have no idea. Do you even know how many alumni I talk to? Not just from a few years ago, but from 10, 20 and 30 years ago. Most of the almuni live within 100-200 miles of each other. Some of them happen to be big donors as well. They didn't appreciate your little write up.

So next time you run your mouth, you may want to think about what you're doing. Next time you are in the Boston area, give me a private message. Alot of guys would love to have a nice, friendly, one on one chat about what really went on with you.

Now, please tell me. You don't think that failure to respond to alumni volunteer forms is a big problem? You don't think that's disrespectful?

Jono's BAAAA BAAA reminded me of our participation in
"pledge games" when I was an AM. At Gtown, actives didn't
haze pledges.....sorority pledges hazed fraternity pledges
(AMs) and vice-versa. (Lemme tell ya....it was JUST AWFUL
HAZING walking out of the house each day in fear of
being jumped by a bunch of KD's ;) )

I won't go into the details of why, but the Phi Mu pledges
were required to come to our house and sing for us....
then we made them get down on their hands and knees
and MOOOOO (Phi MOOOO) like cows.

Then we (the "Lambs" is our nickname at gtown) had to
go to the Phi Mu house the next week....we had to get
down on our hands and knees and BAAAA BAAAA like
the lambs we were!

Pledge games were abolished in the late 80's....too bad,
that kinda hazing was alota fun! ;)

First off, everyone calm yourselves down!

It gets disheartneing when We as Alums do volunteer for a position of time with IHQ and hear nothing back from anyone.

There are several if not more who on this Site who have done this and hearrd nothing back.

jono is correct, We use the 80-20 % which may be a little high.

It is always the smallest % who do the work. But, if it isnt up to us as the 20 % where would we be?

While I can only speak for myself and maybe a couple of others, We Do and Will Keep Doing for the Love of What We have had and keep wanting not only do for say LX, BN, Phi-Tau or anyother Zeta.

Just check and see what and who of the GC Brothers are doing for The Zeta, But, for LXA as a Total!

GammaZeta, then now is the Time to prove it.

We have PMed back and forth and I have always said the same thing! Now is the Time to get re-envolved!:)

Your attacking Brothers on This Site doesnt help your cause! Oh, maybe Vice Versa OK!

Frustration breds much doesnt it?

I volunteered for and was named to the International History Committee.

Apparently, history is not a priority, even with the centennial coming up.

I have received NOTHING from IHQ, NOTHING from the chairman of the committee.

So, I'm not sure I'll volunteer again at the HQ level. Evidently they don't need or want the help they occassionally advertise for.

Hm, maybe if you new SOS (My New Nickname for GammaZeta) as I know SOS then it would be evident as to why He is keeping his Sam Spade incognitio! Well, guess Sam never kept a low profle did He? Well wrong character but still all in the same, maybe has reasons. Right or wrong, they are his. Maybe one of these days He will surface when the timing is right.

Chipster, Whom did you contact at IHQ for becoming a Mentor? I filled out the form and sent it back and emailed the person that L C suggested. Will wait to see I guess!:(

Just as LXAAlum mentioned, He did the same except for another Committee, INT HISTORY and has heard nothing back. Jon Sagara also gave offerings to help on the OUTDATED WEB SITE and heard nada.

I guess the point I was trying to make is,

There is a lot of untapped resources out here (ALUMS) who want to do and offer and do not hear anything back. A day or so is nothing, but when it has been several months, something is lacking isnt there?

I need a Jade East Fix!;)

after about twenty years of being pissed off at the club, I came
back to volunteering
If you think the greeks are worth saving, volunteer
If you think Lambda Chi Alpha is worth saving, volunteer
You will be renewed and proud.

I have know Erik for many years @ 40 to be exact and He led me to LXA.

He is a staunch TKE, LXA, and all Greek supporter.

He is a walking and talking information book on Greeks and will be very happy to expound on them for you.

Erik is so right. I fell by the wayside for a period during a divorce, but have gotten back into it whole heartedly. It is like the magic elixer working with the Many young people of My Chapter, My Fraternaty, and Greeks as a whole. Nothing will keep you young and vibrante as working with, enjoying the good times and bad than being with The Kids!:)

I was pleased to hear from a Brother Named Eric Carlson, Northwester U. who is on the Steering Committee for Mentoring Alums.
I had to interigate him first to see who He really was.

When He Mentioned NWU., I asked him if He Knew Bill Foltz Who is the High Pi there. Yes he said I know Bill. What does He go by I asked, ah, BOZ He answered!
Yep I told Him this is Our own Boz a Hoot for sure!

He also new where kpicket is from so was the true deal for sure!

So basically, He was asking me about why I wanted to be a Mentor for Actives of LXA! So Basically I told him I had been doing it for years at My Chapter along with talking to Brothers on GC and suggested that He check the site out!:cool: Why, is simple, Wh have a lot of Great Brothers here who are willing to help.

So basically The New Kids are asking for help, ours specifically as Alums. But, they are asking for Actives to sign up for this program to select people who can work with each other.

So I guess it boils down to is giving a little more time for LXA and The Young Men who are our Brothers.

I have invited Him to come on G C and Join us and meet our little Band of Brothers and learn some things from us also!:)

I hope Eric C comes on board and sees what We as LXA Brothers think and discuss.

If you have time, do not back off of volunteering time, No travel unless it is close and you want to just by phone!

LCA Mentor Leadership Program
 

Tom, thanks for being a great volunteer and providing this resource to the LCA community! As you can see I did manage to find it..

What Tom is refering to in his previous post is the Joseph T. Charles Mentor Leadership Program, which is a fantastic opportunity for alumni to get involved and directly impact the fraternal experience for one or many active members.

Through the program, active members are matched up with alumni from their profession/career of choice and location. Once a connection is made, it is expected that alumni mentors will be a resource to answer our active member's questions and to provide guidance, just as your big brother did when you joined this fraternity.

The program is an excellent way to help contribute to the growth of our fraternity, without a substantial time or financial contribution. I encourage all active members with career questions, and alumni members to apply - it takes less than two minutes!

Thanks to all of you for reading this long (first) post, and to all the comments about IHQ... we all get fustrated sometime because we want to see this fraternity be the best that it can be, but we *do* need to remember that for everyone at IHQ, it is strictly a labor of love. They are forced to find innovative ways to do more and more with less resources, and for that they should be commended.

Per a previous post, I'm not the High Pi @ Northwestern...I'm not even the High Pi @ Illinois State, for that matter. Those positions are held by Jim Clemmer/NU & Scott Urban/ISU. I just happen to hold positions on their alumni boards (NU = Secretary/Publisher, ISU = At-Large). Just to set the record straight...

Boz, sorry my mistake. The main thing is that you work with these two Zetas!:)

Just to show that the Mentoring Program is working, I received info on two you Brothers who are located at Culver-Stockton and Truman St. U. both Mo. Schools.

Have emailed them but as of yet heard nothing from them. Am looking forward to hearing from them and working with them.

I guess to me, this is waht being a Brother of LXA is all about.

Really shows what In ZAX, means!:)
