Brag About Your Kids (or pets if you want!)

We had parent-teacher conferences tonight and I can proudly say that I have two wonderful children! My daughter is in 5th grade and is getting straight A's. She is in a special spelling group with 2 other kids and they are doing the 8th grade spelling packets and she is still acing them. She tested at a 12th grade, 4th month reading level.... well on her way to those academic scholarships! She is also the teacher's pet.

My son is in 3rd grade. This is the first year that he has received grades on his report card and HE received all A's. His class is a 3rd/4th split and he has been doing the 4th grade math. He has more Accelerated Math objectives completed than any of the other kids. He tested at a 7th grade, 2nd month reading level. But, most of all... his citizenship grades were perfect! The last few years, he was on a behavior plan for at least part of each school year, but this year, he is behaving perfectly! Self-control has FINALLY kicked in with him!

I am a proud mom!

Dee

Oh, what the heck...

Oldest daughter -- graphic designer, singer, actress, voice overs. Graduated with honors from my Alma Mater.

Middle daughter -- Hair colorist at a great high end spa. Does several Denver news anchors hair. Great mom.

Son -- National Merit Scholar -- Junior, University of Oklahoma National Scholars Program and Honors College -- 4.0.

Two cats -- littermates/brothers. Dumb but loveable.

I have no kids, so I'll brag about my puppy instead. :D

After two and a half weeks of having my new puppy he is already housebroken. When he needs to go out he stands by my bedroom door and wimpers, then we'll go outside, he goes to the bathroom right away, and when he's finished he comes and jumps on my leg. Luckily he's a little guy and doesn't like the cold so he gets done REAL quickly so we can go back inside. ;)

He also is very good about not chewing my things up...I've lost one book to his chewing and that's it. He spends the rest of his time chewing on one of his 8 million toys. He has seriously barked ONCE since I got him, which is awesome b/c I live in a duplex and I was afraid that he would be really yappy and loud. (He's a chihuahua)

He is just the sweetest little puppy ever, always knows when I need a kiss or some cuddling to make me feel better. Everyone who meets him just falls in love...I got super lucky. :D

PM_Mama00 11-04-2004 12:11 PM

Awww I was thinking about this today. I have no kids, and you can't really brag about a fish who swims into the side of his bowl..

So I'll brag about my niece. For a 3 year old, she is so incredibly smart. I was a student teacher in our preschool co-op in high school for 3 year olds, and I don't remember ANY of them being this smart! She hears a song on a movie once, and the next time she watches is she sings along. She can count to 10 in Spanish and Italian. Some of the stuff that comes out of her mouth is the funniest stuff you'd ever hear. I can't really describe how smart she is, I just wish you could all see it!

moe.ron 11-04-2004 12:12 PM

My pet in the Sim just won a competition. :D

BetteDavisEyes 11-04-2004 01:04 PM

No kids but I do have stories to share about my nieces & nephews (now totaling 9)

My nephew Scott is 11 & a musical prodigy. He plays 5 different musical instruments including violin, drums, trumpet, piano, and flute. His mom used to be in a semi-famous Spanish pop group in the 80's & his dads a musician too.

My niece Aimee is 4 months old & as bald as an egg. She's adorable & chubby but alas, the first Latino child I've seen with no hair on her head.

My niece Ariel just turned 7 & had a lovely dance recital. She dances tap and jazz & is actually quite good. My sister is going to keep her in her dance classes up until Ariel says she doesn't want to do it anymore.

My niece Cescilia is a 6 year old cheerleader & her squad in her age division took first place in a competition for all Southern California cheer.

My nephew Brandon lost yet another tooth so he's running around proudly showing his gap that makes him look like a Jack-O-Lantern.

My nephew Steve is 13 (God help us during puberty) & is an amazing saxophone & guitar player. Musical talent seems to run in this family as his mom (my sister) was a semi-famous singer in the 80's. Spanish music.

My nephew Bryant just got his drivers license so pray for all the Southern CA drivers.

Chris may actually finish high school & Alex got a job!!!

Joy Joy Joy

hmmm.....I have nothing to brag about here...

Daughter #1 - HS dropout (got mad at school because they had the *nerve* -herwordsnotmine- to ask her to make up 2 credits because she missed so much school because of her Chron's Disease. Finally I forced her to get GED (scored among highest in the state). Currently unemployed and sponging here.

STRIKE One....sigh

Daughter #2 - Graduated with average grades. CONSISTENTLY tested in top 1/2 of 1% of all HS students in Iowa. Entered Army, hated it, got out. Married day before HS graduation. Accepted to the Nursing school even with mediocre grades based on exceptionally high test scores. Expecting in April. Happily married, just purchased new home.

Ball!

Son #1 - Freshman. Managed to get himself kicked out of school last Thursday for poor attitude and failure to do any school work at all. Joy. In subsequent days since "request to leave" (district says they didn't suspend him and now wants him back after we started asking serious questions about open enrollment which would cost the district money), we have discovered quite a history of bullying and harrassment directed toward him that he didn't want to tell us was happening. Working feverishly to get him placed elsewhere.

Foul! Strike Two!

Son # 2 - 6th grader. Organizationally challenged, but does good work. Very popular with classmates (a girl asked *him* to the middle school dance which he not so politely declined-still gotta teach him boy/girl manners). Exceptionally good tackle, just discovered GREAT noseguard :) (he has the size and speed!), plays string bass, electric bass, trombone, baritone and sings in regional honor choir. FABULOUS Starcraft geek.

It's a Hit for a single...could be stretched into a double...

Son #3 - 5th grader. Reading challenged but works his butt off and is making great progress. EXTREMELY auditory learner. Remembers everything he hears. Gets better than average grades, concientious, diligent, BEAUTIFUL penmenship. Incredible visual spatial skills and knowledges of construction fundamentals. AVID and skilled rock climber capable of lifting his own body weight with only upper arm strength.

And it is a Hit for a homerun!!

Don't you just hate when they get old enough to figure out how to get themselves into trouble. If I survive Son #1 and get him out of HS, I will be taking a great vacation!

DeltAlum 11-04-2004 04:21 PM

Pam...

Don't give up hope!!

The thread asked for bragging, so I didn't mention that daughter number two, who is now doing very well, was a real challenge child -- including low grades, drugs. etc.

The good news is that she came to her senses, went through rehab and is just really doing great.

Hang in...

adpialumcsuc 11-04-2004 06:20 PM

I don't have any human kids but I do have a canine one. He is 3 years old and is still the joy of my day. He is very well behaved and I believe he sits in the wondow all day and waits for his mom and dad to get home. He doesn't tear anything apart and plays with his millions of toys and the cat of course. He is very well mannered for a cocker andhe isn't to protective of me (this can be a huge problem) He loves people and kids Oh and car rides (especially rides in the convertable cars)

The cat on the other hand has issues...........

Schmeer 11-04-2004 06:38 PM

I don't have any kiddies either, but I do have an adorable nephew named Patrick who is the cutest thing ever. He dressed up as a puppy dog for Halloween and my heart just melted when I saw pics of him. My sister says his new favorite toy is this thing called a bedbugg that he velcro's to his pj's at night so that he has a buddy when he goes to bed. I love him to death and I think he looks just like me! :)

valkyrie 11-04-2004 06:47 PM

WOW. Where should I start bragging about my cats?

Kierkegaard, along with being a scholar of obscure existential philosophy, is very involved with her Theta chapter. I think it's really funny that she's a cat and a KAT!!! It won't be long until she's in the White House! She has an internship with Kate Spade New York where she is heavily involved in the design of new handbags.

Valkyrie is more of a Louis Vuitton girl. She's on the VIP lists at all the hottest clubs and only hangs out with the coolest cats out there. She has an amazing sense of style and there are always boys lined up outside the house hoping to get a date with her.

Although she's rather shy, Lilly is about to try her paw at professional golf this year. We got her a little outfit complete with a visor and a complete set of matching Vera Bradley luggage so she will be styin' and profilin' at the golf lounges all along the eastern seaboard.

Being a teen mom is hard, but Xochitl has done us proud. After giving up two of her kittens for adoption, she continues to be a strong influence over the two kittens who still live with her. She always gets dinner on the table (if, of course, "getting dinner on the table" means meowing really loudly at the humans until they fill the food bowls yet again) and although she's packed on the pounds, being Siamese, she always has a kind word for anyone and everyone.

Jupiter is well on his way to becoming an international playkitty. He has a way with the ladies, and I can only guess that growing up in a house with his mom, sister and three other girls has taught him how to say all the right things. He likes attention but will bite you if you tickle his tummy too much. We're trying to get him over that because belly scritches are the wave of the future!

Peep takes after her mom in the chub department, but boy does that girl know how to have a good time! She's not really into fashion, although she does love her North Face denali fleece! Rather than hitting the clubs, Peep is more likely to be skiing the slopes in Vail or Aspen, or even hiking along a mountain trail, climbing a screen or making the dangerous trek to the top of the refrigerator.

I'm really proud of them all!

RioLambdaAlum 11-05-2004 12:42 AM

I have 4 adorable and spoiled bunnies!:D

There is:
Curious Lil One
Dinky Diregado Tiger
Greyhound Pinky Toes
Two Eyed Spike

But we just call them Curious, Dinky, Greyhound, and Spike.
They do get their full names called when they are in trouble.

texas*princess 11-05-2004 01:00 AM

I do have this one fish... Delta - who is an albino betta and he has managed to stay alive for 1 year and 8 months so far! He swims around all day and LOVES to watch TV with us. He also knows knows how to play catch and he enjoys playing follow-the-pencil.

I'm so proud of him. He doesn't tear anything up, he doesn't wake me up at the crack of dawn and he doesn't knock things over while I'm gone. Good fishie!!!!

enigma_AKA 11-05-2004 02:40 AM

I have to brag about my dog, Silver. He's soooo smart and just like they say about Schnauzers (he's a silver/salt&pepper Standard, by the way:D ), they have well developed behaviors just like humans. My parents are "raising" him, as I am away at school and he has become quite the new youngest child. He has (in the last few weeks):

* Taken a protein bar out of the wrapper and ate it. And I don't mean chewed it while still in the wrapper, I mean peeled off the wrapper FIRST and then ate it! He's bad, but still, you gotta give him some credit...;)

* Toilet-papered the house without breaking the roll even once. He went all the way from the guest bathroom on the main floor, through the foyer, up the stairs (17 stairs!) and into my old bedroom and across the bed!

*Learned to open his door! This is a big deal because the door to his room is heavy and he's not that big! But at least he's learned how to get out if he has to (i.e. strangers in the house who he's not comfortable with and protecting my niece and nephew)--and now he can get into more stuff while my parents aren't home!

******On a good note, has learned to wake both my parents at different times to not only get them started for the day, but also to take him for a walk (my mom did a 3-Day for Breast Cancer, and they've been on a roll ever since!)

I know it seems lame, but I miss my puppy and can't wait for him to show me all the new stuff he's learned since I've been gone!

here's to shadow cat. personality plus. everyone in the apartment complex calls him by name. black cat with white whiskers and white sox. comes when i call him. occasionally falls into the bathtub when he's flicking bubbles. but great company.

Sister Havana 11-08-2004 01:06 AM

I have a wonderful Welshie named Barney who has the world's fastest tail...and he is a very smart little guy too.

AlphaFrog 11-09-2004 11:08 AM

My daughter can now lift her head and only wakes once in the night.

She can also pick the most quiet moment in church to launch a belch that could be heard a mile away...:o

ztabchbum 11-09-2004 11:56 AM

Marley - great beta fish. Just swims in his oversised flower vase and doesn't cause any problems. We sometimes forget we even have him.

Nikko - the devil cat. Nikko is a 1 1/2 year old siamese mix that is very stubborn and doesn't like many people. He is a bit needy - you must clean his litter box out every other day or he'll leave you "surprises." He also knocks the water dish over everyday and then complains about it. Nikko, when he's indoors, loves taking showers with you. He'll sit in the tub and just let the shower rain down on him. (I'm not even kidding)

Tigger - the old man. Tigger is an 8 year old domestic short hair cat that tries to keep Nikko in line. He is very loveable and enjoys his baths. He and Nikko live on our screened in porch and I miss having him around. He is a pure cudler and loves being the center of attention. He gets a long well with the dogs too because he's got such a laid back personality.

Sierra - the puppy. Sierra is a 5 month old APBT (American Pit Bull Terrier). We're still working on the potty training thing but she gets along great with everyone. She is very affectionate and loves to talk to you and watch tv on the couch.

Rhett - the man of the house. Rhett is a 1 year old AST (American Staffordshire Terrier). What he says goes. He is the protector of the house too. This is by far the most affectionate dog I have ever owned. He loves to go for car rides and sits in the front seat of my boyfriends car just like a human. He's an excelent swimmer - he can swim 25yards without reaching for the wall. He learns new things everyday that just amaze us. To say that he's smart is an understatement.

ZTAngel 11-09-2004 12:31 PM

No kiddies here so I'll brag about my pets (well, my roomie's and boyfriend's pets but I'm around them a lot so they're mine!).

Conan- My boyfriend's Rat Terrier. This dog is really my first child. One of the smartest dogs I've ever met. He is incredibly well-behaved. If we give him a command, he immediately listens. He is also the sweetest dog. My boyfriend lives in Atlanta so I see him every few weeks. Conan definitely misses me. As soon as I arrive at my boyfriend's place, Conan will attack me with his kisses. Also, if my boyfriend is on the phone with me, Conan will jump on his lap and try to nudge his ear into the phone. I'm the only person that my boyfriend talks to that Conan will do that with. He misses his mommy. :( Conan is full of energy and really hyper which I love in a dog.

Buddy- My roommate's adorable long, red-haired Dachshund. We call him Prince Buddy because he's a little bit prissy and snooty. He's constantly preening himself and he gets really upset if another dog (usually her boyfriend's Jack Russell) will try to snuggle up with us while Buddy is on our laps. If he gets mad at you for giving another dog attention, he'll go sit far away and turn his back to you and won't listen to your commands for about 10 minutes. We still love him, though! He knows how to play the piano. My roommate will put Buddy in front of one of those Playskool baby pianos and she'll say, "PLAY!!!!" Buddy will hit his little paw against the piano which makes the most awful, off-tune sounds. Of course, we sit there and say, "That's so pretty, Buddy!" as we hand him treats.

Jacky- My family's cat. She's a mutt that we got from the pound. Her tail was broken when she was little (before we got her) so her tail is in a zig-zag pattern. She use to be a really hyper cat but she's old and fat now. She doesn't do much of anything but sit in this one corner of my house where the light shines in the most. Keeps her warm, I guess. She hates my father. Whenever he walks over to her, Jacky will let out a loud "MEEEOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!!" and run away. Other than that, she hardly ever moves unless it's to get food or go to the litter box. Of course, when I'm home, she'll come over to me and jump on my lap and start purring. :) I don't think she realizes how allergic I am to her. She's also dumb as rocks. We'll sometimes put her out on the patio which she loves since she gets direct sunlight out there. She has fallen in our pool countless times. She'll drink water right out of it (although her water bowl is out there) and she'll slip right in. Before she got fat, she was able to pull herself out but now she just sits there until someone can rescue her. My dad always saves her life but she still hates him. Maybe she's suicidal and is pissed that my dad foils her plans.

I have my son in kindegarten this yr and he is excelling beyond the rest of the class. He is an awesome little sports guy......
soccor
t ball
pee wee basketball

Next yr i am getting him involved in cub scouts
right now he is in childrens chior at church.

I got a great compliment the other day about him. We were at the bank and the lady ahead of us turned around and said your son is very well mannered and very polite. You must be very proud! Well yeah i was. I work hard with him on these things. She went onto ask how old he was... i said 5 and she was shocked said he looked and how he spoke thought he was 7 ....

I am a proud mom!:)

carnation 11-09-2004 05:35 PM

We are so so proud of all the kids but I'll choose Blazercheer to brag on here since y'all know her the best. This month she has:

been tapped into Rho Lambda and Order of Omega

won the homecoming Bakeoff for Chi O with her fabulous chocolate cake!

Okay, I'll brag in order of age.

Oldest son's in 8th grade. He's our "old soul" of the family. Super responsible, great artist, actor with a flair for comedy, almost 6' tall already. Can't keep him in clothes or shoes! He took the SAT last year and scored a 1050, and didn't do a bit of prep or take any extra classes.

Middle son's in 7th grade. For those of you in the Psych world, he's our "sensation seeker" :) Social, smart and an independent thinker. Isn't afraid to ask questions, either. Loves Garfield and Build A Bear Workshop. Now if he could just clean his room sometimes!

Youngest son's in 3rd grade. Has his multiplication tables down cold already (nope, he doesn't take after me at all!) Soccer player since he was 4, but could take it or leave it. Top popcorn seller in his Cub Scout pack this year. Yo-yo fanatic. Still likes to be tucked in at night.

Only daughter is canine and almost 4. Is completely spoiled. Capable of waking up from a dead sleep at the other end of the house when she hears someone touch an egg carton. Did I mention she was spoiled?

I would just like to make sure you know... if you decide to commit to being a den leader (and there will be big pressure! "We can't have the Tiger Den unless someone steps up to be the leader"), you must realize that you are not committing to do this for one year... you will be doing this until he is a Boy Scout! It didn't dawn on me until a couple months after I said "I can be the assistant leader" that this was a YEARS long committment!

As someone in her 7th year of cub scouting, just keep telling yourself "it's all for the boys!" Somehow, it makes it all better :)

BirthaBlue4 11-13-2004 01:58 PM

My 3 year old can identify all of the capital letters and most of the lowercase. She can identify numbers 0-9 and can count to 20. She knows all the basic shapes and colors. According to the diagnostic tests we use in school, she should be 5 :D :D :D

That's what I do! I have fun with it, it just stinks at times like.. my ex takes my kids to Florida and I have to run a den meeting anyway, without my own son there!

ShaedyKD 11-14-2004 10:58 AM

I don't have any children, but I have a little brother in high school. He was recently elected President of his freshman class, at my alma mater, where I was secretary all three years, so he's following in my political footsteps! He is in the brand new Law Program at school, and is getting an A in his course after getting a 100 on his test and on his mock trial project. My degree is in criminology, so I'm very proud to see him going down the same path. His long term goals are to attend the University of Miami, and then be an FBI or ATF agent.
In extracurriculars, he is a tennis wiz, who will make JV, if not Varsity in the spring. He is working on his Eagle Scout project, and does tons of volunteer work through Boy Scouts. He also LOVES paintball, plays at least 3 times a week, and is in the process of getting sponsors to form a team with his friends so they can enter the competitive level. He has also won several Golf trophies at the local course.

AGDee 03-10-2005 11:46 AM

I had to bump this thread because my son is making me a proud momma. He won the science fair for his grade at school last week and tonight is the district science fair. The top three from tonight go to a Downriver science fair (like regional) where 10 school districts compete. He's only 8 (he'll be 9 next week) and woke up at 6:30 this morning, quite nervous about his interview today!

agdbirmingham 03-10-2005 04:33 PM

AGDee congrats to your son! That's great!! What's your secret?? :)

I have a 10 month old who I'll brag about for a minute :) He has been sleeping through the night since 7-8 weeks and has only woken up maybe once or twice in the middle of the night since then!! He also takes several long naps/day with no problem. He rarely cries and loves to cuddle and read books!! He's such a good baby that all my friends are jealous!

Ok, I'll shut up now....

AGDee 03-10-2005 05:30 PM

He has an innate science instinct in him! When he was a toddler (walking but not talking), he discovered that the humidifier would blow a balloon up into the air so he started getting other things to see if they would go up too. He tried paper, blocks, rocks, cars, etc. As he got a little older, we'd catch him "doing science" by mixing things he found in the kitchen together and putting them in the freezer. I decided that we'd better channel that more productively before he made something dangerous so we started doing science projects at home. That, combined with a LOVE for The Weather Channel got him to this point. His project for this science fair is a home made barometer which he used to make weather observations to see if he could predict precipitation. At the moment, he aspires to be a meteorologist! Anyway, I've only helped foster his natural interests (so that he didn't blow up the house or something!)

He was NOT a good baby.. he cried for hours on end and was colicky for months.

KSUViolet06 03-10-2005 07:01 PM

No kids but I'll brag on my little brothers instead.

Brother #1- He's 10 years old and is an honor student. In his spare time he plays in 2 basketball leagues and is a Boy Scout.

Brother #2- He's 17 and will graduate from HS this May. He has a 3.0 GPA. He's played football and run track all 4 four years. He's been named to the All City track team twice and the All City football team 3 times. He's got a full scholarship to Tiffin University here in OH to play football and plans to major in Sports Management and minor in Coaching.

valkyrie 03-10-2005 09:27 PM

I can't brag about my dog yet because he's kind of dumb so far. He only knows how to sit, so if you want him to do something he'll just sit, like it's his default response to anything. Kind of cute but dude's going to have to learn some new tricks.

kafromTN 03-10-2005 11:04 PM

I'm going to brag about my dog. He's a nearly 3 year old chocolate lab (his birthday is the same as mine), about 90 lbs. He's a very smart dog, even though I haven't trained him to hunt or anything he knows, sit, stay, down, put the ball in my hand, he walks wonderfully on the leash& he'll listen to me when I tell him to do things (the best part). He likes to chill at my feet whenever I'm on the computer.

When I took him to the park Sunday he was getting tons of compliments, especially people who didn't have a dog b/c the other dogs were nuisances.

His name is Oscar.
-Mark

AGDee 03-11-2005 12:23 AM

Well, my son didn't win tonight and he's very disappointed and discouraged. My heart was aching for him as I saw his face fall when his name wasn't called. My poor little man. He still watched The Weather Channel tonight though, so it hasn't destroyed his interest completely.
