What is the rudest thing another drive have said or done to you?

Some guy gave the finger and high beam me for a good 2 minutes. To this day, I have no idea why he did it.

Kevin 10-29-2004 10:35 AM

When I was 16, some ass cut me off so I gave him the bird.

He then proceded to do this routine where he gassed it like he was going to pass me, then slammed his brakes and got behind me for about 1/2 a mile. We then ended up at a stoplight here he got out of his red pickup truck (what is it about people in red pickups?) and started yelling, cussing and banging on my door (which I had locked). That went on for about a minute or so until the light turned green.

I then proceeded to smile at him and drive off :D

God that was dumb on my part in retrospect.

33girl 10-29-2004 10:41 AM

Right after I moved here, some old bat (think a trashy version of Sophie Masloff, LOL) rammed into the back of my car, blamed it on me and drove away. She totally went ballistic because there might have been a scratch on her Crown Victoria or whatever that big ole boat was that she was driving.

DeltAlum 10-29-2004 10:59 AM

I was only doing about 70 MPH on a Denver freeway and the guy in the RED truck behind me took offense that I was driving so slowly, passed me, then slowed down to about 20 and then tried to run me into the median.

aephi alum 10-29-2004 11:29 AM

Funny you should ask... I see so much isht on a daily basis that I'm putting together a website of stupid driver tricks.

Some of the highlights:

- I had a guy cutting me off and brake-checking me for a good three miles because he thought I'd cut him off. He even sounded an air horn and threw it at my car (and missed). I don't know how I could possibly have cut him off, as he was in the left lane and I'd just moved from the right to center lane.

- I had a guy chase me down (on foot) at a gas station and scream at me because he thought I'd hit his car. Half a dozen witnesses said otherwise. He shut up...

- I was rear ended (my little car vs. a Ford Exploder!) and the other driver fled the scene. I got her tag number, though, and she got a big fat ticket. :D

- My favorite: I turned out onto a road where some guy was speeding along. I was clear when I started the turn, and had good visibility, so he must have been doing at least 60 in a 30 zone to come up behind me so fast. Anyway, he decided I had cut him off. He proceeded to tailgate me for three miles, running a few stop signs on the way (darn country roads - no public place to pull into). I finally got caught at a red light. He got out of his car and came up to me screaming and swearing. My doors were locked, my windows were closed, but stupid me had left my sun roof open... as I was closing it, he threw a glass of water through it and onto me, got back in his car and sped off (incidentally, running the light, which was still red). So I got his tag number and called the cops. A couple of days later, he was arrested :D on a Sunday morning, so he got to cool his heels in jail most of the weekend :D. I took him to court... because he had no priors, he got off kinda light. He had to do some community service and anger management training, and I have a restraining order against him.

Yeah, I'm just a bad-driver magnet. :(

A group of friends were all caravaning to another friend's house for a party. 3 of us were following another car but some dude in a Jeep cut in front of us and we couldn't see where our friends were going. So we changed lanes and passed him. The Jeep dude decides that we had apparently cut him off so he pulls out from behind us and cuts us off big time. On a suburban street no less. Then he sticks his right arm out and gives us a thumbs down. It was the lamest cut off I've ever experienced. So all three of us in the car flipped him off from behind.

I also had one lady in this TEENY lil Miata lay on her horn because she wasn't going fast enough for me to merge behind her. So I passed her with plenty of room. There was no way I would have hit her because she was going too slow.

SSS1365 10-29-2004 12:02 PM

Let's see... I was driving once on I-95, where the speed limit is 65. I was going somewhere between 85 and 90 and some dude was seriously tailgating me. As soon as he got a chance, he passed me on the right, and although he didn't give me any obscene gestures, if looks could kill I would certainly be six feet under right now. I don't really understand what his problem was. I guess he thought that 25 mph over was too slow.

Then, someone almost sideswiped me once because they obviously didn't bother to look before they started to get over. Well they realized it just in time, but then they honked at me , like I did something wrong! Oh, excuse me for being in your way, I'll never let it happen again

PhoenixAzul 10-29-2004 12:02 PM

Ok, for future reference people...If you see a cyclist on the road, DO NOT and I repeat, DO NOT honk at them! Just like normal driving, it doesn't make us go faster. Actually, what happens is most of the time cyclists can't hear a car approaching because of the wind (it gets really loud even if it isn't a windy day), and if you honk when you're right upon a cyclist, then they get surprised and might swerve into traffic or off the road and into a ditch. This happened to me yesterday when I was out training, and I flipped the guy off.

I got run off the road a week ago by a truck driver who thought it was funny to pass about 1/2 an inch from my handlebars.

kddani 10-29-2004 12:35 PM

so then how in the heck are you supposed to alert a bikerider then?

I see all sorts of stupid driving moves- both car and ESPECIALLY bike rider every day in downtown and Oakland. Bikeriders always bitch and complain, yet the majority of them don't obey traffic signals or the rules of the road, nor do they use the proper hand signals. I always appreciate those that do, but those are few and far between.

The bus I was on nearly smeared a bike rider today. The bus was stopped, as was the car in the lane to our left. The light turns green, the bus begins to pull away from the curb, and a bike rider comes flying up between the bus and the car. He was inches away from becoming thin-crust-pavement-pizza

honeychile 10-29-2004 12:45 PM

When I was about 18, I was in a hurry to get somewhere, and the little old lady driving behind me was going about 10 miles an hour (seriously - that's what I was doing!). Impatient, I was right behind her, until she pulled over, and motioned to me to put down my window. I did, and in the nastiest voice she could muster, she said, "Tail Gater!" in a voice that's usually reserved for comments about mother comments.

I laughed, but deep down inside, I felt bad about it.

SapphireSphinx9 10-29-2004 01:35 PM

beware... kinda long

this happened a couple of weeks ago when i was driving home from work.

as everyone knows, the freeways in southern california are horrible! so even though it was 4:30, and the big rush hadn't started yet, there was HEAVY traffic on the freeway.

i was in the second lane and decided to get into the far right lane, because the truck in front of me was gassing me out! a big rig was slowly pulling up, but i had way more than enough room to get in there and for him to stop; he was a good 50 feet away and going like 10mph!

i had my music up pretty loud, and thought i heard a horn... and this is what ran through my head after that... "nah, that couldn't be for me ... uh uh, i know that truck driver did not just blow his horn at me! ... ah hell no muthaf*er!"

(ok, so i have a really bad case of road rage - let's just state that right now)

so once i passed up the delivery truck that was gassing me out in the second lane, i pulled in front of him... just so the big rig trucker would get next to me.

i knew he couldn't see me, because i don't have a sunroof... so i put my right hand on the passenger seat and flipped him off, not even knowing if he was looking.

oh yeah, he was looking alright! haha! this crazy mofo pulled ahead of me, stopped his truck and hung out of his window cussing and spitting and doing some weird gestures with his arms.

so, i looked at him, smiled and waved. haha! everyone that was around us were gaulking at him, not knowing what the hell he was doing, or why. (they hadn't seen me flip him off)

he kept going off, and it started getting annoying, and i got pissed. so i thought, "hey, he's driving a rig, and his company's name is on the side of the truck... maybe i should call his boss and tell him that his driver is making obscene gestures and sexually harrassing me!" haha... ok, so i'm really mean!

but unfortunately, traffic let up in his lane and he merged onto another freeway by the time we got moving... i never was able to get the number off the truck! so i never got my full retalliation... :(

and that's the end of my story.

kappaloo 10-29-2004 01:48 PM

During my trip ... in some random state, on some random deserted interstate (I'm thinking Nevada, Arizona or New Mexico) I was in the right lane going the speed limit and this large truck come up behind me and instead of passing me in the very clear left lane decided to tailgate me - to the point where all I could see in the rearview was grill. GRRRRR. After awhile he got bored and passed me anyway.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 10-29-2004 01:56 PM

I drive in DC so the drivers here get really riled up, too.

Plus I'm a terrible driver.

Sometimes when people get real upset, and start honking or making gestures, I grin real big and wave excitedly. If your goal is to make the other guy quit what he's doing, that works *real* well. I think because for a minute they panic and think we know each other. But it's long enough for me to drive away or merge back in or whatever.

TigerLilly 10-29-2004 02:00 PM

PhoenixAzul - ditto everything you said about bikers! Above all...drivers, please share the road.
Probably the most dangerous thing a driver ever did to me (not rudest, because it's much more than just rude!) was to actively try to run me off the road while I was biking! I was just riding along minding my own business, on a road with a clear view and that was plenty wide enough for bike and car, when out of the blue these two idiot guys came zooming up beisde me, honking their horn. They slowed down to my speed and started swerving towards me, acting like they were going to run me off the road. Finally I just rode over into the grass and stopped, hoping they'd give up and go on, which they did. It was really scary, though, because they almost made me wreck.

You don't need to alert. Just pass on the left at a safe distance. Riders should be looking back for cars, and visually know you're there. But especially on downhills, bikers have a ton of other conditions to worry about (roadkill, oil slicks, potholes) , and some guy honking the horn in his Bush-Cheney laden gas guzzler is just one more thing I don't need.

Riders should pay attention to traffic signals and use proper turning etiquette, and should NEVER ride on the sidewalk. It's theoretically safer in the street than on the sidewalk.

I was a passenger with another woman. A man raced passed us, stopped in front of us, and prevented us from moving. He motioned for the driver to open the window which she did because she thought that he was a police officer in an unmarked car. He began to yell at her for driving too fast. He was the one who passed us and stopped short in front of us. It was weird.

My friend's boyfriend at the time accidentally cut off a cyclist. The cyclist caught up to him at a red light, punched him in the face, and drove away. It was extremely upsetting and frightening. This was right after a woman had been shot and killed in her car on the Grand Central Parkway. Road rage is bad.

Some cyclists in New York are extremely dangerous. They ride on the sidewalk and dart in between cars and between the sidewalk and buses. I have almost been run down twice in the past few months. I saw a cyclist almost plow down a blind person getting off a bus while I was waiting to get on. Luckily, there was a big guy who stopped him.

My mom and I were leaving a Chinese Buffet. We were parked in a compact parking spot, and this SUV parked in the compact space next to us. There was literally NO room to get in or out on the SUV's driver or our passenger side. The driver of the SUV had to push our side-view mirror in to park, then had to get out of his passenger side cause there was no room for him to get out of his side.

So, I had two ice cream cones in my hand, and my mom took one of them, and as we drove off, my mom threw one of the cones on the back of the SUV. This huge Hispanic guy comes out of the restaurant and yells "What the fuck you doing bitch?!" and I threw the other cone on his car as my mom sped off.

Good thing too. I was only 13, and I actually wanted to go back and confront the guy....

Another one from me...

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I were up in Boston. We were driving along 128 at about 12:30am. There were only a handful of other vehicles on the highway. The speed limit is 55, and we were doing a comfortable 70 in the center lane.

Suddenly, from out of nowhere, this Masshole passed me on the right, cut me off, brake-checked me, and then sped off, for no discernible reason other than to be a d!ck. I decided I was too tired for a game of cat and mouse, so I let him go.

Why he passed on the right instead of the left is anyone's guess. The right lane was empty, and the left lane had only one vehicle in it...

...which, unfortunately for the Masshole, happened to be a police cruiser. Smokey passed us, paced the Masshole for a few seconds to determine his speed, then pulled him over. I hope he got nailed for speeding and reckless driving - and, from the way he was driving, quite probably DUI.

Every once in a while, there is a cop around when you need one. ;)

amgn253 10-29-2004 05:50 PM

This is long...sorry!

The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas Eve, I was coming home from a friends' house, on a poorly lit, curvy backroad and some guy starts tailgating me. He never tries to pass me, turning on his brights from time to time. On the straight aways of the road, he pulls into the oncoming lane of traffic to match speeds with me, never trying to pass. He pulls back behind me when the road got curvy. I did not have a cell phone with me, so I couldn't call for help. I couldn't tell if he was trying to get me to pull over or something else.

The road to my house was coming up, so I turned down it, hoping this idiot would let me go. He didn't. He turned down the road, too. I then decided I was not going to let this person know where I live, so I decided to head towards town to the grocery store, where I could get help. I drove to the grocery store, with him following me the entire way. I parked, jumped out of my car, ready to run into the store, when the driver who had been following me stopped, rolled down his window, looked at me and said,

"Oh, I thought you were someone else" and took off.

I returned to my car and cried for at least 10 minutes. I never got the guy's license plate, just a general description of the car and the driver. When I told my parents, my dad marched down the street to our neighbor's house, who is a policeman, and told him.

One of the scariest moments of my life!!

adpialumcsuc 10-29-2004 06:37 PM

About a year ago I was driving home and was going to get off at the next exit so I got into the slow lane. I got behind a little old lady that was literally going about 40 in a 65. I wasn't to bothered because at least she was in the slow lane, but the guy behind me was irrate. I think he thought I was purposely going slow so he would get boxed in by the Big rig next to me.

When got off the freeway the little old lady stayed on the guy followed me. He was moving his arms around and making all sorts of gestures. When we got to the stop sign he pulled up next to me, rolled down his window and threw an open can of beer out the window. He also had a few pleasant words to say. This sent my hubby over the edge and he started cussing back until he realized that there were 2 kids in the truck. As he pulled away we called the cops.

Two days later I was notifed that he had been arrested that night. Hopefully he learned his lesson and doesn't drink while driving......AND most importantly.....NOT with his kids in the car.

PM_Mama00 10-29-2004 07:18 PM

My lil and I were driving down a busy main road one fine summer day. I was in the far right lane, and needed to get in the middle lane, with my blinker on (I'm anal about using turn signals). Well, this car that was in the far left lane decided to get over just after I got over... mind you without a turn signal. They decide to honk at me and tail me. I needed to get gas since I was almost on empty, so I switched lanes safely and pulled into the station. Lil and I were discussing who would get the gas and who would go in for the cigarettes. Right as she was about to open her door, crazy car pulls up besides me, screaming at me "You stupid f*(&ing white bitch" and all other things. I hurried up and locked my doors and closed the window while I just sat there. The passenger got out of the car and was pounding on my window screaming obscenties and racial slurs, and I looked over at the drive who was laughing and the two people in the back who looked like they were about to shit their pants. She ended up throwing something at my car... something white and chunky. I sped off into a subdivision and they went on their merry way.

I had to drive 15 minutes to another gas station and get that shit off my window, all the while checking my mirrors to make sure they weren't following me still. I seriously thought we were going to be shot, and others at the gas station just watched. Friendly city we have here but that's Taylor for ya.

RedRoseSAI 10-29-2004 07:31 PM

A road by my office was recently under construction. Part of it is boulevard-style (has a big grassy area in the middle between the two lanes).

Well, the eastbound lane under construction, so anyone who wanted to go east had to take the marked detour route. Not this one chick, though. I'm driving down the westbound lane when all of a sudden I see a car coming RIGHT AT ME! I slam on the brakes, move to the right a little, and give her a "what the f*** are you doing??" look. We both had our windows rolled down, and we have the following exchange:

Stupid Motorist: Move over!
Me: Are you kidding me? You're driving on the wrong side of the street!
SM: Well the road's under construction. What else am I supposed to do?
Me: Uh...take the detour, like everyone else is.
SM: Oh, shut up.

With that, she drives off, still on the wrong side of the street.

ttt

Connecticut drivers are deeply stupid.

I was heading along Route X toward the dentist's office when asshat decides he's tired of waiting for the guy in front of him to turn left, and peels out into my lane without signaling or looking. He sees me coming up and immediately brake-checks. I drove off the road, since there was nowhere else I could go. I felt my ABS engage, and I was sitting there in the driver's seat, foot on the brake, screaming, leaning on the horn, but apparently still managed to scrape his back bumper enough to leave paint. I chalk it up to my years of commuting with crazy-ass nutcases that I didn't do worse. I neither felt nor heard an impact, so I kept going.

Asshat FOLLOWED ME to my destination (unbeknownst to me as he pulled over and let a few cars pass me so he could follow me surrepititiosly) and came after me in the parking lot. He yelled at me for speeding in a school zone (I was doing maybe 15). I kept my head enough to RUN into the dentist's office and say to the receptionist "call the cops" (cell phones don't work around there).

I was too wigged to sit still for my cleaning, and had to reschedule. :(

I've told the cops to leave it at a computer record of the incident for now, but I'm inclined to go in and file an accident report, as the accident was plainly his fault for an improper lane change.

ADPiZXalum 01-04-2005 01:25 AM

People ALWAYS flash their high beams at me, like to tell me that mine are on, but they are never on high!!!!! I don't know if they just seem that way or what the deal is. My friend Tony also has a Mustang and he says people do that to him a lot. Anyway, it hacks me off when they wait till they are right up on me to pass me and just blind me. Arrrrgggggggh.

pink and green 01-04-2005 03:36 AM

The day after Christmas, I was heading to work (I work at the Gap in the mall in my town). After driving around the mall parking lot for about five minutes, I saw a family with four little kids heading to their car. I let them cross in front of me, and then followed them to their (close!) spot. I put on my turn signal, and waited while they loaded all of their kids and bags and strollers into the cars. A bunch of other cars passed me, seeing that I had my turn signal on & was waiting for the spot.

Just as they were backing out of the spot, this b*tch comes speeding up the aisle, sees me with my turn signal on, and proceeds to take the spot anyway. I beeped at her, flashed my lights, and pointed to the turn signal I had on, & she made some hand motions as to "i had the spot, blah blah blah."

It's probably not that big a deal, but it was quite rude because I was obviously waiting for the spot. I was so annoyed (and by that time, almost late for work). It was especially annoying because I had waited SO long for the spot!

Needless to say, she is the first person I've ever flipped off!

lifesaver 01-04-2005 03:52 AM

The rudest thing another driver has ever done to me has been to dare get in front of me, or in my way. I am way more important than them and have much more important business to be attending to then whatever nonsense they have going on.

Not only am I busier, but I am a more important and better person.
