Helping less privileged students go to the prom

(This is the Vancouver, BC project, but there are ones similar to this all over North America) The Toronto site is here: http://www.corsageproject.ca/ More links: http://www.thecinderellaproject.com/...liatedblue.php |
I have heard of a program like this in New York. Maybe it's the same organization. They collect dresses from designers and stores as well as gently worn dresses and distribute them to girls. They also give the girls make overs. Some hairdressers and make up artists donate their services. It's very nice. :)

In Chicago it's called The Glass Slipper Project. It was great to see it on the list.

Denver APhi Alumnae host 7th Annual Prom Dress Exchange
The Denver Alumnae chapter of Alpha Phi holds a similar event and they seem to have great success with it.
Press release from 2004 - The Denver alumnae chapter of Alpha Phi and Cherry Creek High School's About Hope4All, a student organization dedicated to community service benefiting children, hosted the 6th Annual Prom Dress Exchange on March 20, 2004 at the Marriott Denver Southeast. Young women were invited to attend to find the "perfect" prom dress for prom in exchange for a $10 donation. "This event allows young ladies the chance to experience high school prom without the financial burden. Anyone interested in being involved can donate a dress for an individual that cannot afford to buy a new one," said Holly Brown, Alpha Phi Denver alumnae chapter marketing director. Women who selected dresses last year were also given the opportunity to bring them to the event in exchange for a new dress. Mrs. America 1991 and Pageantry Magazine columnist Kristianna Nichols also offered hairstyling tips to attendees. And their press release for their upcoming 2005 event is on their website: http://www.denverphis.org/alphaphiandthecommunity.htm |
That's so neat to read about all these organizations that help out with Prom.
A good friend of mine is the junior class sponsor at her school and she does something really neat every year. There's a place in Scottsboro, Alabama, that called "Unclaimed Baggage" or something similar. During prom season, she usually goes up there about twice and gets dresses for about $40 each, if that much. She usually brings back about $300 worth of dresses, has them cleaned, and then has them available for the girls who may not be able to afford a prom dress. |
In the San Francisco Bay Area the program that collects dresses and accessories for girls for prom is The Princess Project

Donate formal dresses, bridesmaid dresses, accessories, and shoes to help young women attend their high school prom. If you do not have a location close to you, you can mail items to them.

Bumping because I discovered a new prom dress project in Austin to add to the list above sponsored by the Texas LoneStars. Project Princess is a service project of the Texas Lonestars of the University of Texas - http://studentorgs.utexas.edu/txlstars/
Texas (Austin) Project Princess http://www.projectprincess.com/ I hope you all will check out a project near you and consider donating to help a young woman go to her prom! |
Chicago Suburbs Program
I am the chairperson of a Chicago Suburban project that stemmed from volunteer realtionships with the Glass Slipper Project of Chicago. Currently Cinderella's closet is a project of the Junior League of Kane & DuPage Coutnies, Inc.
These programs would be an ideal place to not only donate your clothing and prom items but for greek voluntarism opportunities. I can assist organizations interested in working to set up programs. http://www.cinderellascloset.info/ |
Even though I didn't see my city in this list, I actually got tears of joy in my eyes, that there are women out there who care enough about high school girls! I can't even imagine being 16, and not being able to go to the Prom because I couldn't afford it - these groups are worth their weight in gold!! Bless you all!

For those women in the bay area, the princess project is collecting dresses until March 19th only... You can drop them off at any of the bay area Antrhopologie stores... In addition to Dresses, they also take accessories (purses, jewelry, wraps and shawls)...

The Corsage Project is getting most (if not all) of their dresses from sponsors this year. |
just found out there is another project in Austin and Dallas
Make Cinderella dreams come true for young women in Austin and Dallas with the simple act of donating your gently used gowns, shoes, &/or accessories to The Prom Shop Project. This non-profit organization services teenage girls who cannot afford Prom attire.

In Cedar Rapids, the local pop radio station does it and it's called Gown Town.
It took place last Friday, and 137 dressses were distributed to young women. It doesn't seem like a lot, but every little bit helpes. |
The Corsage Project's Boutique Ball was last Sunday, and I was told it was a great success. I was there the day before, helping sort dresses and accessories. Most of the dresses (100s of them) were brand new, from various sponsors, but there were a few that were donated. Unfortunately, some of the donated dresses were just not useable as they were very obviously from the late 80s/early 90s. One dress looked EXACTLY like the dress Brenda and Kelly both wore to the Spring Dance episode of 90210 back in the first season!

Don't trust the Junior League
While Cinderella's Closet may be a great program (and it is...they do a great amount of good), I wouldn't trust the Junior League of Kane & DuPage. Many members have recently sullied a dear friends reputation with pure lies just to benefit their own agenda. It's sad, but I've learned not to expect much from a group of "neuvo riche" housewives that think the world revolves solely around them. Unfortunately, some of their members are really nice women that get caught in the crossfire.

I donated 4 or 5 dresses to the Cinderella Project in my hometown. I got a card with photos of the girls that received them. It was precious. Ours even had hairstylists and make up artists come in and work for free.

And it's "nouveau". |
I must say, I absolutely love this idea!! I know exactly how it feels to think you may not afford prom, as I was working a part time job, but it mostly went to take care of family matters. It it were not for a ridiculous bridesmaid dress sale at David's bridal, I might not have made it. I would have loved to donate my dress if it would not have suffered in a fire at home a while ago... I hope one day to maybe get to David's Bridal and help out some girls in this community.

Response to KTna
I am sorry to hear you say that you would not participate in a teen program that helps girls from my area and talk poorly of a program that I have chaired for over 3 years with huge success. We are currently piloting other programs throughout the US and have been training others to replicate this program. We only do good things in our community promoting self esteem, literacy, and children's health issues. I would love for you to contact me directly and maybe I can help your friend or answer your questions regarding our organization. I am a Board member and positive participant in all things volunteer. I also am not a ""neuvo riche housewife" and dare to say we have very few members who are.

Our fashion design department at Baylor does something similar--they pick anywhere from one to three deserving girls each semester and do make-overs for prom night. I think they may even make the dresses. It's a really cool project, that's for sure.
