Express (the clothing store)

Is anyone else a little disturbed by some of their pricing schemes.....

I was in an Express yesterday. Was buying a sweater and wanted a button down to go under it. Walked over the wall where all of them are, expecting the usual ~40 price.

NO. They are almost all $79 freaking dollars!!!!

I did finally find one that was $39.50 like I had expected, way in the back.

If I wanted to pay $79 for a button down dress shirt I sure as hell wouldn't be going to Express. That's even more than their editor pants (Which I LOVE, and that is money well spent, for the most part- some of the quality is questionable when the hems from the bottom of the pants leg become undone after a few wears).

Just had to vent. Didn't they learn when they were trying to sell Seven jeans (I believe it was Seven) for like $120 and no one bought them......

ZTAngel 10-24-2004 10:31 AM

My roommate is in the process of writing a complaint letter to them about this. It probably won't do any good but it will at least let them know how disappointed their customers have become.

It's funny because their "Seven" jeans are not the real Seven jeans. They do sell a different type of Express jeans for $120. If I'm going to spend $120 on jeans, I will buy Seven, Chip & Pepper, or Paper Denim & Cloth....definitely not Express jeans!

It's not like the quality at Express has gone up and therefore they need to increase their prices. They are selling the same sweater that they sold at their stores 3 years ago except now the sweater is $60 instead of $30.

While I worked there, I was told by management that Express is trying to become more like Bebe and Arden B. I just don't think they'll ever be able to get themselves into that market. Express had a niche for themselves a few years back; they sold trendy, decent quality clothing for a good price. Now they sell trendy, decent quality clothing for a high price.

I don't even shop at Express anymore unless it's during their sales.

I don't shop @ Express anymore period. You are right about the fact that a few years ago Express was doing really well with their clothes & the prices they sold them for-with the exception of some items like their jeans which used to cost me $60 a pair. My roommate at U of L worked at Express our freshman year of college & even with her discount could barely afford the clothes she was required to wear & pay her bills. After I noticed the price of the clothing going up & the quality going down/staying the same I walked to the store across the hall from Express-Lerner New York-& haven't changed in years.

kddani 10-24-2004 11:07 AM

I actually just sent express an email: talk@expressfashion.com in case anyone else is curious.

I get some stuff at NY&Company but Express fits me better. I've found some cute skirts at NY&C, but their pants NEVER fit me well. I like a lot of their shirts though.

kk_bama 10-24-2004 03:19 PM

I was just in there yesterday & I noticed the same thing. My boyfriend always comments on how high-priced it is.

They already had all their Christmas decorations and sweaters with gift tags out.

amycat412 10-24-2004 04:34 PM

Yeah, I looked at a cord jacket at Express last week that was $120 and I was all HUH? Where do they get off thinking they are all pricey fashion? lol

I LOVE their Editor pants too kddani.

But yeah, their prices are going through the roof lately.

33girl 10-24-2004 04:39 PM

Even when prices were lower, most of my Express/Limited stuff was either from the redline area, or from TJ Maxx. I can count the number of times I paid full price there on my fingers.

The prices aren't so much what's turning me off anymore, but the fact that they don't have things that I would care to sport even if they were cheaper. They look fine on hangers, but I try them on and uggggh.

Dani, Lord & Taylor is starting their going out o' business sale on Wednesday - they have some cute things so check it out.

smiley21 10-24-2004 05:36 PM

i saw a purse at Express for $120

Ditto here. I've just started telling my friends (who still like and shop at Express), "Come get me at Lerner's when you're done in Express!"

PoohsHoneyBee 10-24-2004 05:43 PM

i saw a purse there for over $200. i think it was because it was as big as a diaper bag and leather. i thought that was so ridiculous and for $200 i'd rather buy a bunch of other purses.

Geez, a Kate Spade bag is cheaper than that....

You can get a Kate Spade diaper bag for the same price. I'd be willing to spend $200 for a Kate Spade anyday over an Express bag.

KLPDaisy- LOL. We were thinking the same thing at the same time!

We don't have Express here in Hawaii (or Limited, for that matter), but Ross always has a good number of their clothes on their racks.

I've been to a few Express stores, but I've only paid full price for a dress that I absolutely had to get. Everything else I got at Ross. :p

norcalchick 10-24-2004 08:20 PM

Yeah. It's getting really expensive. The only things I get there now are jeans or things that are on sale. Their camisoles that I think are cute are like $40. And this green or black tweed blazer is I think $120. No way I'm buying that. They do have these new sweaters that are really soft, but still expensive. :( It sucks.

GeekyPenguin 10-24-2004 08:23 PM

Express and Limited are both upping prices - however, at least at Limited, there's been an increase in quality as well.

Agreed. I love the Limited store. Although I miss the day when they sold jeans-I still have a great pair of Limited jeans. :)

Limited has great & affordable clothes that are work appropriate.

They do still sell jeans - both the Tierney and the Drew fits come in denim.

The Limited in Lexington hasn't sold jeans in a long time! :(

Dionysus 10-24-2004 10:10 PM

My favorite one is when they have a sale on blouses for $29.95...and you find out that the blouse you picked isn't really on sale eventhough it is on or by the sales rack!

As for style...I LOVE their clothes. Gap, Bannana Republic, Lerners, Limited, etc. is a little too conservative for me. Places like Forever21 is a "cheap ho-bag" skanky store. Express' style is the happy medium.

We should create a list of stores that are "cheap ho-bag" skanky stores.

1. Rave
2. G+G

5. Charlotte Russe

FAB*SpiceySpice 10-24-2004 10:27 PM

Speaking of skanky stores does anyone remember that store called 5-7-9, from a way long time ago.

I remembered their clothes were always really ugly and stuff my mom would never ever wear. No wonder it went out of business, the clothes were awful.

/hijack

DGqueen17 10-24-2004 10:28 PM

6. Rue 21
7. 5-7-9

haha yup.

tunatartare 10-24-2004 10:31 PM

I've never heard of 5-7-9 but it makes me think of the store 1-3-5 from Mean Girls. The store that carried stuff only in sizes 1, 3, and 5.

LOL, actually Edison Brothers (who also owned Coda, Leeds, and JW) went bankrupt. Probably because no one wanted to look either a) ghetto fab or b) a skank anymore. :p

I tended to stay away from Charlotte Russe because their clothes were the same quality as Forever21 even though they were pricier. They had cute dresses, though...and I got a nice jumpsuit and robe I wore to formal.

aphibeach 10-24-2004 10:50 PM

we had a 5-7-9 in our mall (which says a lot about our town.....we have charlotte russe, wet seal, forever 21, Rave, all that fun stuff) but i dont think its open anymore. our express is right next to 5-7-9, and last time i was there, they were closed

speaking on The Limited, omg it's my favorite store ever! Express is starting to grow on me, especially now that they carry more classy clothes. but i agree about the prices going up. i was surprised to find sweaters for $60 in there that weren't worth more than $30.

carnation 10-24-2004 11:11 PM

There really was a 1-3-5, I used to shop at it when I was a teenager in Houston.

The girls and I were at Express yesterday--but only briefly--because:

1.There was nothing, but nothing, that anybody even wanted to try on. They used to LIVE in Express.

2.The store was blasting Christmas music--what was yesterday, October 23?--so loudly that it literally hurt our ears.

aphibeach 10-24-2004 11:14 PM

i dont know if any of yall made it over to their sale they had a couple of weeks ago

but i bought a beautiful 100% cashmere pink cartigan (with rhinestone buttons) for $40.....originally $90

i think that was the best deal ever......i get so many compliments on it

33girl 10-24-2004 11:22 PM

5-7-9 was called that because the largest size they carried was size 9. That's probably where the 1-3-5 joke came from.

Anyway...

8. Merry Go Round (the old school ho store)
9. Foxmoor (from preppie to ho)

OH MAN! I forgot about Merry Go Round. DJ Sneak used to mix records there -- WTF?

carnation 10-24-2004 11:31 PM

No, really! There was a 1-3-5 in Houston!

norcalchick 10-25-2004 01:11 AM

10. Choice - I know it's in the Bay Area, but it's like a 5-7-9 or Rave. They used to sell a bunch of ghetto 69, Player, and Playboy shirts.

ZTAngel 10-25-2004 08:29 AM

11. Contempo- I think they went out of business a few years ago...
12. The Body Shop- There's a clothing store by this name in a few Florida malls. Skanky, crappy clothing.

I've seen a few 5-7-9 stores still open.

aphibeach 10-25-2004 08:48 AM

ooooo we have the body shop too

Wet Seal ate Contempo.

Optimist Prime 10-25-2004 09:11 AM

Haven't been shopping for a while, like 6 months and about a year since I went to express. They have the most comfortable jeans ever by the way.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 10-25-2004 02:00 PM

We used to call it ConTrampo.
