Misspelled----AGAIN??
Oftentimes, with all of our experiences, knowledge, and intellect, we come across words (often simple) that we have ALWAYS had trouble spelling. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Is it just me or does anyone else know where I'm coming from? For example some words that I've often had to double check are (and please don't laugh):
1.minute 2.conscious (I'm not sure if I spelled it right THIS time) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif 3.tomorrow 4.February Can anyone name some words that they have had issues with (past or present)? Don't worry, I won't laugh or criticize. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Believe me, I know how you feel!!! |
LOL...yes, I always had a problem with:
1. Excercise (exercise) because of the "x" sound 2. Congradulations (congratulations) 3. equiptment (equipment) 4. conscientious (or whatever...I am not going to try to correct now, haha.) |

My spelling has its moments since I have began teaching thanks to some of the NONSPELLERS God has blessed me with. |
Every time I have to write believe, receive, conceive, and all other ie, ei combination words, I have to recite to myself "i before e except after c". It makes me feel like a kindegardner http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif I also have trouble deciding when to use effect or affect in certain sentences. Frustrates me ALL the time! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

But I always have trouble with "possession" (is that right??) I used to struggle with "independent" vs. "independant" all the time but I think I finally got it. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif |
Posess, obsess (ahgunfunnitidontcareifididntgetitright!), occasion, W-E-D-N-E-S-D-A-Y, genius (how ironic!), curiosity, naivete, and sovreign are some of the words that put my spell check to work.
Bad spelerz of the wurld, UNTIE! ------------------ "Talk doesn't cook rice."--Someone smart Visit Alpha Gamma Delta-Delta Sigma chapter! |
Soror, ME TOO! I always have to catch myself on this. "i" before "e", except after "c" ...
I also seem to have a mental block when it comes to 'attached' because I normally write 'attatched' and 'personnel' when I write 'personell'. DUH! I normally am a good speller and I recognize that people have mental blocks, BUT it irks me to no end when people don't PROOFREAD! Quote:

Okay Ladies, I'm back and I thought of a few more words. Gosh this is like RELAXING, RELATING, and RELEASING!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
1. stomache (or is it stomach?) 2. spaghetti (now this is a GOOD one) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif 3. responsibility (I always haveto check) 4. interest 5. Adding "ing" to certain words (ones that you haveto take the "e" off of). I never considered myself to be a bad speller, but, Lord knows, I DO have my days. I've always been critical of my writing (papers, letters, documents for work, applications, etc). So it's like I go, most of the time, the extra mile to make sure that my spelling is correct. I just have this thing about the possibility of being deemed ignorant because of a mere misspelled word. So please remember this whenever you see anyone misspell something or leave out a word when posting. But anyhow keep the responses coming. It's good to know that the many of us have this minor defict, yet significant (there goes ANOTHER word)in common http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
LMBAO, Soror I do the same thing. I'm glad to know I'm not the only on reciting "I before E except after C" Soror I also emailed you.

I feel you on all those words. I especially have doubts about minute and Febuary. In fact, it has gotten so bad I always abbreviate (sp) them as min. and Feb. Isn't that a shame. I think Microsoft Word as ruined people in my generation with spell check.

As skilled a writer as I am (I'm a Communication major who writes all the publications for my office), my trouble spots are still:
Massachusetts Connecticut Cincinnati broccoli vacuum tomorrow necessary restaurant grateful fascinate segue (seg-way) gray vs. grey cream vs. creme message vs. massage lay vs. lie (that's more a grammatical issue than a spelling one) Sometimes I feel like I need some "Hooked on Phonics" flash cards when I'm writing those words (and I'll probably have to edit this message to correct something)! ------------------ Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Here are a couple more...
knowlege (or is it knowledge)????? SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME! business (I always spell it buisness first) privilege (again, is a "d" supposed to be there? exaggerate ( I don't know if I spelled it right and frankly I DON'T CARE! Don't worry, I plan to speak to my psychiatrist (did I spell that right?) about this burried hostility I have with the English language) ------------------ P.H.A.S.A.D. #14 D.S.G.H.O.S.T.S. It's sooo good to know that I am not alone in this.
CrimsonRage: PRIVILEDGE (I think) has always been a hard one for me too. I also have a problem with thinking faster than I type, so I'm always leaving a word (or 2) out. Quote:

Privilege has no D but knowledge does.

I think we need to add 'discreet' vs 'discrete' on this thread! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Oh my goodness, this thread is really speaking to me!! I am probably the world's worst speller. I am (if I can say so!) a pretty smart person, but I would always be the first one kicked out of the spelling bees in elementary school. It is so frustrating!! I used to hate writing essay questions in school because I would have these wonderfully big and impressive words that I wanted to use, but did not know how to spell them, so I would have to 'dumb down' so I wouldn't get marked off for spelling!! Now, I work as a corporate trainer and I frequently write responses from class participants on flipcharts. Of course when we are going over 'ground rules' at the beginning of class and I talk about "you can disagree without being disagreeable" and "Everyone participates", I have to include "Spelling does not count!"

They're vs. Their---I know the difference, but when I'm typing really fast I get those two mixed up.F
Gray vs. Grey Color vs. Colour z vs. s---in words like "criticize" or "excercise" Proceedure vs Procedure February I used reverse the "s" and "i" in "business" all the way up to two years ago. I think it actually was on GC where I really got knocked on for doing that, lol. |
Imma say this ONE time
DILEMMA!!
There is no N in dilemma. |
I'm a pretty good speller, but this one gives me trouble!
This one always throws me for a loop:
Is it: 1 -"occasion" or 2 -"occassion" or 3 -"ocassion"? Answer: a) 1 b) 2 c) 3 d) none of the above Somebody help a sistah out! |

Effect is a noun. Affect is a verb. I still get them mixed up. Affect can also be a noun in psychology/psychiatry circles.. are you completely confused now? lol
Words that tripped me up: separate equipment (a 't' should be in there, darn it!) receive (I always get the i before e thing mixed up) to vs too (too means Extra) When I was in like third grade, my teacher taught me a neat trick to remeber the difference between dessert and desert: dessert is Sweet Stuff, desert has Sand .. lol I still remember that. 'vacuum' STILL gets me (did I spell that right?) |
effect/affect
The effect of an illness on the sufferer is obvious, but not so obvious is the effect on the affected members of the family. ;)

I was thinking of this one the whole time I was reading. To help me, I usually say busy-ness when I type/write it to remember to but the i after the s. Saterday (Saturday, but this one is rare) thge (the, I always mess up this word when I type for some reason-the g is by the h). |
I used to read a legal questions board and people, young and old, seemed to have the most trouble with "repossession" and "emancipated" (for some reason, 12-17 year-olds are flooding legal chat rooms with questions on what they have to do to become emancipated or move out of their parents' home (something that never crossed my mind as a teen) -- but I digress). After reading yet another post on "How do I get amansipated [sp]," a lawyer got fed up and responded, "If you can't spell it, you're not old enough to consider it. The word is emancipated."

Back with another one -- a homonym tale.
So, yesterday (Friday) the Northeast was impacted with a storm/blizzard warning. Although my office (in higher ed) has no say whatsoever in deciding whether/when to close, students call us, email us, blow up the Facebook page until we post the announcement. When I came in yesterday, a student had emailed at 11:22 Thursday night to ask "is there collage today?" I created an auto reply so I wouldn't have to field so many inquiries. Very glad I did, because with my aching back I was very tempted to write back, "Yes, and you clearly need to be here." (b*tchy, I know, but I was done!) |
