Say No to Ponchos

I am firmly anti-poncho. This article is so funny, and it sums up my view entirely.

Is That a Real Poncho?
The hideous new trend afflicting America.
By Amanda Fortini

Fashion crimes, like many other crimes, begin innocently enough. A few influential designers send a quirky and impractical article of clothing down the runway; high-fashion magazines enthusiastically push it; a celebrity is photographed wearing it; lower-end lines begin mass-producing it; suddenly, women are buying it in shrieking colors and synthetic fabrics, and what started as a harmless act of whimsy has become a widespread aesthetic offense. So it has gone with the poncho—that rectangular piece of material resembling a small blanket, with a hole in the center for your head. The style, now at its apogee, appears both in mainstream stores like Ann Taylor, the Gap, J.C. Penney, and Macy's (which offers 43 options in a ponchos-only department) and in high fashion magazines like Vogue, in which New York socialite Plum Sykes sports a fringed, yellow, off-the-shoulder number, and Bazaar, where a $1,500 Chloe "horse blanket poncho" is deemed one of the season's "must-haves." Recently, during a 20-minute walk in Midtown Manhattan, I counted 18 ponchos—averaging nearly one per minute. Ponchos have become this season's Ugg boots: unsightly and overexposed.

BEST ARTICLE EVER.

Once you let the ponchos in, the gauchos follow, and I KNOW no thirty-something wants to ever see another pair of gauchos.

The rain boots trend is STUPID as well. WTF? It's 60 and sunny outside and you're wearing galoshes?!

winneythepooh7 10-18-2004 11:22 PM

I actually got one for my birthday a couple weeks ago from my mom. It's okay to wear every once in awhile, but unlike some people I know, I don't sport them in every color, pattern and fabric, and also to match my outfit underneath. I guess this is how trends go. I used to think those UGG boots were cool but told myself to hold off a bit before purchasing. Boy am I glad I did. Even this season you see New Yorkers on every street corner wearing those. I guess that's what happens when they begin selling the cheaper knock-offs at Old Navy.

They have THOSE at Old Navy too. Ugh. Cheetah print......

tunatartare 10-18-2004 11:30 PM

OMG YES! No ponchos, no UGG boots. Please also no chinese slippers (I'm sorry but houseslippers were not meant to be worn outside of the house) and any shirts that say things like "Mrs. Pitt" or "I partied with Justin".

That's so funny. All the tourists in NYC wanna buy those in Chinatown. I got a pair once and they fell apart just walking around INSIDE my house. I know someone who has a cousin in like Idaho or somewhere (no offense Idaho people) and they ask her to send them in bulk because they love 'em out there. I think the Chinese are laughing at those of us who waste our money on them.

AGDee 10-18-2004 11:40 PM

I wore ponchos when I was 11. My daughter is almost 11 and is wearing ponchos now. They are for 11 year olds...

Dee

winneythepooh7 10-18-2004 11:41 PM

Actually I should have said laughing all the way to the bank.........

tunatartare 10-18-2004 11:47 PM

Pretty much so. I hear Chinatown's economy is booming. I once saw a woman on the A train wearing PLATFORM turquoise Chinese beaded slippers.

Sister Havana 10-19-2004 12:06 AM

AGREED. Ponchos did not need to come back. Do they flatter anyone?

Lol. I wore my poncho when I was 5 and have no urge to revisit that fashion trend again.

Gina1201 10-19-2004 12:20 AM

OMG, where is the anti-poncho queen Aurora_Borealis (sp?). She would definitely agree with this.

Peaches-n-Cream 10-19-2004 12:26 AM

It's like the 1970s all over again with Chinese sleepers and ponchos.

abaici 10-19-2004 12:31 AM

I'm glad that I have allies. They are hard to come by in SoCal. The funny thing is I did a bit of online browsing and saw the Macy's Poncho section. That's when I knew I had had enough of this trend.

**I have pink chinese mesh slippers, and they are indoor wear only**

Can you say fugly? I hate that word and never use it, so when I do use it, you know it's a "special occasion."

OMG!!! That thing is hideous! At first I thought it was just a regular Pi Phi sweatshirt and I couldn't figure out why you had posted it in this thread. Then I looked a little closer and...oh eww, just EWWW.

My mom is obsessed with ponchos. She tried to make me wear one over my formal dress for when I went to Memphis for the boy's formal. She was highly unsuccessful in this venture however.

One of the girls that went to Italy with me this summer wore a pair of those Chinese slippers while walking around all of Florence, Venice, etc. Anyone who has been there knows that those shoes are about the LAST thing anyone should be wearing while walking around there...

Yeah, that's horrible!!

preciousjeni 10-19-2004 01:39 AM

:( I like ponchos! They remind me of the 70s. I don't wear anything but a white one though. I don't like the slippers. And, UGGs are ridiculous. How are people not sweltering in those, wearing 'em through the summer?

By the way, somebody mentioned galoshes. I NEED some functional ones - it's been flooding 'round here!

OK that is just WRONG to wear. Ugh. Has anyone actually spotted someone on your campus in that get-up? A SWEATSHIRT poncho? EEK. Come on now!!!!!My condolences to the Pi Beta Phi's for having to have their letters on this monstrosity.

ZTAngel 10-19-2004 08:25 AM

If I'm going to spend that much on fashion, I want it to be something that is seasonless and won't ever go out of style. This includes a nice pair of pumps, jeans, peacoat, cardigan, etc. Certainly not an ugly poncho or Uggs!

I was at the mall with my roommate yesterday and I saw the ugliest poncho at Bloomingdales. I said to her, "I would never wear one of those. They're ugly and they'll be out of style within the next two months." She turned red and admitted that she bought one the other day. I almost felt bad but then I didn't.

BTW, they're selling imposter Uggs at this one discount shoe store in a hot pink color. I almost vomited.

Yikes! That is fugly! However, I like ponchos. i think some of them are quite attractive. Now Ugg boots on the other hand are not. They look good on no one.

bcdphie 10-19-2004 11:29 AM

I really llike ponchos, I have cute, black knit one. :p

i heard jharb has one of those.

chideltjen 10-19-2004 11:40 AM

Ponchos... ugh... no.

Maybe a solid color is okay once in a while... but I've seen some with CRAZY granny prints all over them.

And that sweatshirt is overkill.

Personally, I LIKE to have sleeves on my clothing.

LOL, I adore ponchos.

RedRoseSAI 10-19-2004 12:07 PM

Down with ponchos! They are way too trendy for my taste. I do, however, like wearing this one lacy shawl and pinning it with a broach near my shoulder. I suppose that's sort of poncho-like, but I've been doing it for years, way before it was trendy. I haven't done it much since every teenybopper and her mother started wearing ponchos.

Steeltrap 10-19-2004 12:45 PM

I am old enough to remember ponchos in the 1970s. Unfortunately, I was given a couple for my birthday a couple of weeks ago by my nephew's GF. :o

See, this I considered. It's a cute look and different enough. However, I swear I could not pull the plastic out to pay for it. LOL!

They put it in a bag, so I will have to fish at the bottom of the bag. If not... :o

She's really trying hard to win you over, huh ST?

bruinaphi 10-19-2004 02:22 PM

As a knitter I have been making and wearing cute high-end ponchos for a while. Yes, [gasp], I do wear them with my Uggs. For those who are not from SoCal, we've been wearing ponchos and Uggs for years. It's something that took a while to make it across the country, but if you don't like it, don't wear them.

There really isn't anything nicer than a well made poncho. I don't mean the kind you are seeing in the stores, I mean the kind that sell for a few hundred or a few thousand dollars at the little trendy shops throughout LA. They are warm and cozy and cute when tailored to you.

CTFU. CTFU. CTFU. Since I got my Chanel shoes, I'm being a good sport about this.

What LD said. I love my ponchos and I love my Uggs!

norcalchick 10-19-2004 02:48 PM

No poncho, but I love my Uggs. I only wear them with my jeans though. I always wore my Reef flip flops, but it's getting cold, and the Uggs are so freaking comfortable.

kddani 10-19-2004 04:39 PM

I can't stand either ponchos or uggs... and the thought of them together makes me

I just have a mental picture of someone herding goats in the mountains

valkyrie 10-19-2004 04:48 PM

I'm ordering a new poncho right now.

No seriously, I love them. They're like blankets you can take with you.

Munchkin03 10-19-2004 05:08 PM

I don't mind UGGS when they're worn as protection from cold weather. It annoys me to no end, however, when I see little girls wearing them with mini-skirts. Don't their feet get hot, sweaty, and STANKY?!
