Theta Nu Xi - Random
Sorors,
I really felt the need to have a place to post random stuff that pops in my head. I encourage you all to do the same so we can be random together!!! It's gonna be sad if I'm the only one posting and I make it to 2000 posts just from being in this thread!! LOL!! |
christening the random thread
Ok - first order of business...;)
My undergrads just called me their "AWESOME" :D :D :D :D :D chapter advisor!!!!! I'm so excited for them and everything they're doing. The hard work has begun and we're already making great strides. Yay for their dedication!! :) so happy right now! :) OH! Also, I didn't procrastinate 'til the day before my paper was due this time!! It's my first paper in grad school and it's due in two days. I already did the research so it's just the writing I have to get out of the way. |
my random thought
I'm so happy we had the support of FSU alumnae members during our week, including several founders! It's the first TNX week that I have participated in planning, and although it took a lot out of us, it was so worth it!

not really a random thought...
This is not a random thought, but it's what is in my head right now.
Dr. Paul Rice, the professor who has the office next to mine, died yesterday afternoon. I got an email about it this morning. The whole English Department is sad and confused and everyone is stunned. The doctors originally thought he had asthma, then a respiratory infection, but it turns out he had cancer. He died of pnuemonia that was brought on by the tumor interfering with his breathing. They have the lights only halfway on in the hallway here, and people are putting flowers outside his office and sticking notes on his door. Most of the English faculty (including me) have cancelled classes because everyone is too upset to teach. This is so odd and surreal. I can't wrap my brain or my heart around it. |
How about this ya'll: Pitt could lose another Greek advisor. Check out Greek life for the thread.
Sometimes I feel like an orphan being passed from one foster home to another. Once we get a Greek advisor they leave, then we are stuck with the administration, they find someone else, they leave not long after they are hired, etc...... |
oh no! Good luck, Nu Chapter! I hope that this time you get a Greek Advisor who will be supportive and won't back out...this must feel like a set-back but fear not, you may get somebody absolutely wonderful!

I'm sorry to hear about your lost. My thoughts and prayers got out to you and his family. My random thought: Unemployment sucks. It feels like I'm living someone else's life. My self-esteem has taking such a beating. My mood has been up and down since Convention. Today it's down because my former employer has filed an appeal to deny paying my unemployment benefits. We both know why it's come to this. Business is business. Just trying to"protect" what's yours. I just got comfortable being able to say I was fired. Now this |
I'm so sorry, M!!! Please hang in there and hug your chapter sisters as much as possible!!
Hugs to you! ((((((((((((((((((((((M)))))))))))))))))))))) |
Hugs to you!!! :(
|
Hey all!! I'm having a great day. I just got back from Georgia where I had a blast. Now I just have to get back into the swing of things at school.
Also, I just found out today that my wish has come true. I'm an ITL!!!!!!!!!! I won't go into it, my Sorors, but I know you know!! LOL! |
Good Stuff
My random good news and why I'm smiling today:
1) I got an A on a paper that was giving me fits for a while. YAY! 2) I'm redirecting my studies to be more intercultural, so I will now be pursuing my M.Div with a Missions/Missiology concentration. This is not to say that I'm going to be a missionary...I just want to focus on the intercultural relations of what missions is. Also, because the Missions/Missiology concentration focuses on cultures outside the States, I'm going to either get an MPS (Master of Professional Studies) in Urban Ministry or an Urban Ministry certificate. (Yes, help me, the MPS is ANOTHER Master's but it would be more of a dual degree than a completely different degree.) I want to be exposed to intercultural relations within the U.S. The MPS has some requirements that I cannot meet right now, but it is possible that I can petition for acceptance into the program. The certificate would allow me to get credit for my work and there is no particular approval for the program outside of being admitted to the institution. I'm not sure which will work out but I'm excited nonetheless. 3) I was contacted by an organization in NYC. Here's the website: http://www.afghancommunicator.com/ Their mission statement is: AC is a community-based, grass-root organization dedicated to education, advocacy, and youth leadership. AC's main focus is the Afghan and Muslim communities in New York. We also serve the larger community in New York, as well as the broader Afghan community. They've asked me to consider being a board member on a volunteer basis! Of course I will!!! I'm in the process of determining the legitimacy of the position as well as getting to know the people who run the organization, but it looks like a great opportunity for me to support what I consider to be a neglected population while also fulfilling some service hours. (Please note: I put "fulfilling some service hours" second because it IS secondary to the reason I'd accept this position.) It sounds like a terrific opportunity and I am excited to see how it will pan out. |
Great news:
I won my umemployment hearing. The hearing was really scary, but I stated my case and they sided with me. I've been subsitute teaching the past couple of weeks and it's been fun. And most importantly, I think I may be on the verge of getting a full-time job. cross-fingers and toes for me |

One for the Good Guys...uhm...Girls
Way to go, M! I **KNOW** you are happy to have that behind you. Best of luck for the future. I have my fingers crossed that your will find the PERFECT job!!
ONE, Egyptian Breeze :) |
It's looking good! I am heading for a seat on the Board of Directors for the Afghan Communicator. I was worried about the time commitment and suggested possibly creating a Board of Advisors/Advisory Board to do research and perform other functions (a great way to get local professionals in the community to come on board!) for the Board of Directors. BUT, I just met with the Chair of the BoD who completely sold me on the idea of the BoD. It's a good time commitment, but it's worth it.
http://www.afghancommunicator.com/ I'm excited about the possibilities. And, I found out that they specifically approached me because of my deep interest in inter/multiculturalism. :) I was very pleased when she told me that this organization looks for a diverse group to lead the AC because they recognize the benefits. The chairwoman told me about a Jewish board member (who had to resign to care for her newborn) who came with fresh ideas and helped the organization make significant strides. So wONEderful! ETA: I know they have an "Advisory Committee" but these people aren't as involved with the day to day operation of the org as the Board of Advisors I was talking about. That was just an idea anyway - the name would surely be different. :) |

Thanks heaps!
Thank you Katherine Stanley, Liz Gutierrez, Alicia East, Jaime Newsome, and LaToya Eaves for making "Diversity as Identity: Multicultural Sororities as an Alternative to Self-Segregation in the Greek Commmunity" a success at Coastal Carolina University's Celebration of Inquiry.
Thanks also for sticking around to socialize and catch up once the presentation was over. You ladies are the best! ONE love! Dr. S |
Order of Omega
Jacquelyn Baldeon (#2 from Spring 2k3 line) and I were both tapped for Order of Omega yesterday, the only MGC members accepted this semester!
|
I just made some mashed potatoes and gave my neighbor a spoonful. He started making crazy noises and said, "D*** girl, these official!" (These New Yorkers and their slang!) Then he asked for a full bowl. Then he started talking about they were so good it made him wanna slap me. LOLOLOLOLOL!!! Folks is too funny up here! :p
|
Good news: The place where I've been temping at just offered me full-time employment today:D
Bad news, I'll be making less money and will have to get a part-time job to make ends meet:( |
For those who have been following...
I just got confirmation today that I will be teaching a class at Nyack College. I will also be working in conjunction with another professor who is teaching developmental/remedial English. The students will see her for regular class and then come to me for a "Writing Intensive Lab" which will include learning grammar skills and how to write effectively at the college level. This is a brand new course (in a series of developmental/remedial courses) that is being offered for the first time this fall - as part of the move to become a University.
Also, the other great news is that these two courses could potentially serve as part of my internship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! An internship is required as part of the degree program. Last Note: I know it's probably silly but I'm really excited...as a professor I get put on SALARY at the College!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL! |
AWESOME!!!! CONGRATS!!
|
I know this is kinda old news, but I wanted to congratulate Rekha, a founder at ASU, for winning Miss Asia Arizona.

I've seen a really similar one that Sigma Lambda Beta has, and I think that's what was used here as a model cos it has the numbers 86 on it...could that be switched to 97 through some sort of program?
In other random news: Valencia is awesome. Spain is awesome. Oh, got Dean's List again. |

Thank you Beta man!!
OH MY! Have you all seen this??? It was on our national guestbook. I wanted to record it for posterity:
Friday 06/03/2005 9:27:49pm Name: Albert "Buddha" Molina Homepage: http://www.buddhaonfire.blogspot.com E-Mail: nmts@ureach.com City/State/Country: Houston, TX Organization or Chapter Represented (if any) Sigma Lambda Beta, University of Houston Comments: With these words I wanted to express my admiration and support for what I think is the best sorority in the nation. I hope you enjoy :) Butterflies Creatures of beauty that taint my eyes in lavender and Carolina blue. No longer can I subdue the urge and need to confess with speed my admiration for you. The standard of all things ladylike. The personification of what a man wants at his side when he lays his head at night. Set apart from all the rest, my undivided attention I must confess can attest to this poems plight. You are unique….special….. bright amongst bleak and envious things Greek incapable of matching your aesthetic delight. And yet in spite of breathtaking beauty you remain truthful to the duty of intellectual excellence with strong presence of mind. A package so complete I find the choice to ignore it is blind and an exercise of self deceit. So at the risk of having to repeat this poem in a single phrase I won’t be phased or shy. And without further a due these words hold as true….. I’m completely taken with Theta Nu Xi! |
^^^^^^
Awww that is so sweet:D |
|
OHHHHHHH MY!
Well, sorors, it appears we have attracted the attention of someone representing the Aryan Nations World Headquarters. Someone signed our guestbook with a complaint that he/she had posted previously, but the post was removed - and that our censorship is pretty close minded for a multicultural organization.
I am pleased that we have become enough of a threat to attract attention like this! :) Persevere, my sorors! Theta Nu Xi F.A.M.L.! ONE!!! |
