Very sad...need smiles

My little puppy, Po, was hit and killed by a car this morning after he escaped from my grandparents' backyard. If you all recall, I had to leave him at home so I could live on campus at school. He was about seven months old (beagle/pit cross). I'm very sad about it because we got very close in his early life.

I rescued him from a pound when he was a few weeks old. He had already been picked up, adopted, brought back and had been sitting there for a while. So, I got him and he was a vicious little thing and so afraid of people. I loved on him and kept him with me every moment that I was home (which was all the time during this period!) I also took him to puppy classes to find out how best to make him happy. He turned out great and very happy.

When I moved, I left him at my grandparents' house with his "big brother" - another dog who "adopted" him in his pack. He was ecstatic at this point and was having a great time, but he was a little too smart and adventurous for his own good. This morning, he snuck out of the backyard and got in the street.

I think I'll be ok in a few days, but I'm so unhappy right now. He was my little baby!! :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

I'm so sorry {hugs}

Remember, though, that although his life was short, he spent the greater part of it with someone who loved and cherished him and I'm sure he was very happy

Jeni...

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog...

Take time for yourself...it's amazing how much animals impact our lives!! My mom lost her dog a few years ago. It took her a while to get over it.

Thank you all for your kind comments! My dad just buried Po in the backyard (pet cemetary area) of my grandparents house where all the family pets go to rest in peace. He and my aunt were bawling, as they tell me. Since I'm like 1000 miles away, I feel a little better not being in the midst of it all. I asked my dad to put Po's favorite red plush bone (the first toy he ever had - as well as his favorite) in the grave and to make sure he had his collar on.

winneythepooh7 10-14-2004 01:18 PM

I understand how you feel. I never understood how people became so attached to pets until I got a dog. It is like having a little baby. I already had 2 cats but they are different, they can take care of themselves and are not as needy. Once Darby got off his leash but thankfully he didn't run. I almost had a heart-attack though. It is wonderful that Po had such a great owner and wonderful life the short time he was here.

Thank you again for all your sweet replies! While it may sound really lame, I want to share some pictures of Po as a sort of memorial since I couldn't be there when he was buried.

When I first adopted him (4-6 weeks; we didn't really know)...

I've never seen that! :( It's so sweet and, of course, has me crying again. Thank you for letting me know about it though! It really put some wonderful images in my mind.

Awww, poor puppy! I'm so sorry. I can sympathize because the same thing happened to my sister and I a few years ago...this stray cat had kittens on our back porch, and one of them was so small and really sick, but he just kept trying so hard to keep up with the other ones even though he couldn't. One morning my mom found him on the porch in front of the door where the mother cat had left him, and he was too sick to move so she brought him inside. For weeks, my mom, my sister, and I took care of him...took him to the vet, nursed him back to health. He ended up OK, and he was the sweetest little cat...even my stepdad, who detests cats, could tolerate him. Everything was fine until he insisted that we get Squiggy declawed because he was afraid for the furniture, so we did. That day we got a call from the vet saying that Squiggy had had some kind of reaction to the anesthesia and that he had died. We were all so sad, and I was extremely angry at the vet for ages. I know how it is...I couldn't stand to look at pictures of him for a long time, but eventually it gets better. I'm sorry, though...it's a really crummy thing.

This is the part that kills me. You put so much into the pet and just fall in love and then your baby is taken away! I'm so sorry for your loss - and, as you know, I can relate!

Po looks like he was such a little character...I love the middle pic especially. I know he is running and playing his little heart out at the Bridge.

See? Right there. He was the little puppy that no one wanted and YOU took him in and gave him a home where he went on to live a very happy life. May that thought bring a smile to your face when you think back on your time with Po.
