Dog/Animal Costumes

In my line of work, I have to visit nursing or personal care homes at least twice a week, sometimes more often. Besides making nice with my clients, I need to keep the door open with each of the homes involved.

I don't even participate in Halloween, but the one home is having a "Pet Parade" the week prior. They have seen pictures of our Buffy, and I've been told that his presence is expected. Well, goodie for them, since he "marks" every single place he visits! But this means that I have to come up with a costume that
a) he'll wear and
b) he won't be humiliated wearing.

Buffy (a Bichon Frise) doesn't mind wearing a loose sweater or whatever when it's really cold, but I'm not so sure he's going to be happy about this...

Any suggestions?

Check out the last post in this thread..
What kind of pet(s) do you have?

I just posted a link and pic of doggies dressed up for Halloween. I will warn you that some of these costumes IMO go beyond your basic sweater and hat.

honeychile 10-13-2004 10:47 PM

Oh, Honeykiss, those are adorable - but I don't think they'll translate well to a small, fluffy type dog. So far, I'm thinking about a cowboy hat...?

mmcat 10-13-2004 10:51 PM

how well can he hang with hats....
some dogs can hang... some not.

The hats that have the little elastic loops for his ears to go through work well. The hats with the string underneath his chin lasts about a nano-second.

He does have one sweater that's white with black spots. I call it his "Dalmation Look", but he looks so embarrassed in it. (Yeah, like he'll just love a cowboy hat...! )

Oh man, I thought this was going to be a thread about furries. Thankfully, it is not.

Unfortunately, my knowledge is limited, as you may have guessed, to cat costumes.

I bought a very cute king costume at Target for Barney to wear the first Halloween after I got him. All the kids who came to my house got a kick out of his costume. Last year he decided he didn't want to wear it so he just wore his candy corn bandana. That's probably what I'm going to do again this year.

Petsmart has a good selection of pet costumes.

winneythepooh7 10-14-2004 06:29 AM

I got Darby a pumpkin costume but he hates the head piece. It lasts like a second. I think he is gonna go as his self this year because I don't want to really spend another 20 or 30 bucks but we'll see..........I just ordered him a DPhiE t-shirt so maybe he can go as a sorority girl LOL. j/k.

_Lisa_ 10-14-2004 07:21 AM

Since you know he will wear the loose sweater why don't you just decorate the sweater in some way?

texas*princess 10-14-2004 09:02 AM

I think you can go to websites like www.petco.com or petsmart.com and they might have some "costume" ideas :)

Kevlar281 10-14-2004 11:51 AM

I bet a cow costume would be easy to make from stuff you have a around the house. Not only does your dog get to dress up like a cow but it can live out any fantasies it has about being a Dalmatian.

This is just wrong in so many ways!!

My mother is suggesting an Uncle Sam hat, with a bow tie. Buffy may tolerate that...

I have a pug and my boyfriend would KILL me if I ever did that. It is bad enough I was "talking" about getting him booties for the winter so salt doesn't get in his paws and a sweater/coat. You can guess what Michael said he will look like............

Actually, my vet feels that if you're not going to wash their paws when they come in from a salty sidewalk, they should wear boots.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY DAY!!!!!!!

winneythepooh7 10-16-2004 12:12 PM

Well I wasn't going to get Darby anything else, but I decided to order the Halloween t-shirt from the Chiwawagaga website. I think he is still way too young to keep the pumpkin hat on his head. Besides, he can wear the t for a few days before Halloween and not look too silly.

Honeykiss1974 09-08-2005 08:37 PM

Sonce Halloween stuff is already in stores...

I"m sure your cat will love this costume. :D

Thanks for bumping this thread!

Buffy will be attending a "Bichon Bash" this weekend. I made him a little cape with an "SB" ("Super Bichon") on it, and he even napped in it!

Btw, valkyrie, that is THE cutest cat costume I've ever seen!!

Tippiechick 09-08-2005 09:24 PM

Check out petedge.com. It's a really good site. And, they have some of the cutest costumes.

I thought this thread was going to be about ritual attire.

Oh, no! The Azure Blue Catsuits are only discussed under "Ritual"!!

RedRoseSAI 09-09-2005 07:58 AM

Yes, but surely your lion suits fall under the "animal costumes" category. I'm sure you can understand my confusion.

Bumbel Bee Kitty

Ignore the po'd look on his face and just focus on the costume. http://www.mycathatesyou.com/images/...2/cheechee.jpg

RedRose, now I understand! ;)

Okay, fess up - what type of dog do you have? :)

shyone08 09-12-2005 04:24 PM

a yorkie =)
We dressed him up as a police officer when we went to a parade and the officers that were there loved him and got photos taken with him. Our yorkie is about 10 pounds which is big for a yorkie and he can fit in their clothes. There are a lot smaller...four or five pounds where they would most definately not fit =) But for a 10 pound dog they fit really well =) We sent a photo of him in an outfit to the store and they put it on a bulletin board behind the cash registers :-)

So when we were in Chicago last October, greeklawgirl and I were wandering around this one street because I wanted to go eat at a certain bagel place there and she made me go into the pet costume store so she could admire every little item trying to figure out what would look best on her dog. i totally laughed at her the whole time.

greeklawgirl 09-12-2005 04:50 PM

Laugh all you want, I dress nicely and I see no reason why my dog shouldn't be as well! ;)

cashmoney 09-13-2005 07:32 AM

Damn, I really have to get my mind out of the gutter. I thought this thread was going to be about those sex parties where people dress up as animals and start having sex randomly.

I don't have any of Laney in her costume from the Harvest Festival last year posted online (she was a tractor. I sewed the costume myself)

But her are a few from when she was a pup:

In her sorority girl outfit, the shirt even had my letters on the back of it:

In her spring hat:

As a bunny for easter:

My roommates called this one her hooker outfit:

If she could talk she probably wouldn't be too thrilled about it :P

I made my dog a hippy one year for Halloween. She looked so cute in her little wig. :)
