Do any of you serve on any boards now that you're out of school?

Okay.
Then, yes. I'm on the Housing Corp. Board for my undergraduate chapter. |

But the reason I asked is because I'm being asked to join a more established philanthropic group as a board member and the way they make it sound is that there are wine tastings and all I have to do is show up. I'm not stupid. I know it's never like that and I was trying to gauge how much work people put into these organizations if they join the board. -Rudey |
Hmm...that I don't know.
There's a philanthropic group here in Charlotte that I do things with, and I actually know one of the board members and have met 2 others. I asked the one lady what she does for a living, and she replied, "I'm on the board!" Also, one of my attys here at work is on a board, and he runs around for them quite a bit, and we get a ton of correspondence through here (office) for their stuff. Our secretary ends up taking care of the minutes, etc. |
I webboard...
BOARD IS LIFE. |
i serve party guests on a china plate not on a board...
sorry:p |
Lets see, I'm on the board for the following:
Soldier's Tower Committee, UofT Woodsworth College Alumni Association, UofT Lambda Chi Alpha, Toronto Alumni Assocation Celtic Studies Association, UofT Mess Committee, Denison Armoury |
i'm constantly doing stuff for different companies' board meetings, but i'm not on any boards.
|
I've sat on a number of boards -- professional, social and fraternal.
The experiences have run everywhere from a lot of fun to a total pain. One thing to consider is that there can be some hidden costs involved -- for instance those luncheon meetings for which members are expected to pay out of their own pocket. Depending on the board and where they meet, those can add up. Also, again depending on the kind of board, be sure that the organization insures its board members from potential lawsuits, etc. I guess I would advise to talk to former and present members of any board you're invited to join and be sure you know what the real story is. |
I am on the board of the Bolingbrook Area Branch of American Association of University Women.

Let me add that it's to raise money. I'm trying to see if I can come up with an excuse for joining after this event. -Rudey |
I currently serve on the board of directors of these corporations:
Commodore Business Machines Eastern Airlines Wang Word Processing |
I'm a director on the San Antonio Alumni Association
|
The only Board of Directors I'm on is for our Ohio State chapter's house corporation, where I serve as President.
I also serve as Treasurer on the local level for Cub Scouts. |
have done it multiple times...not currently though.
|
I'm on 3 alum boards:
Alumni Advisory Board Mu Tau Alumni Chapter Mu Tau Housing Corporation |
Right now, I'm on the board for my chapter of the DAR. No worries about paying for anything there - one member died a few years ago and left our chapter close to a million dollars!!
I'm also on the Board for an international soccer organization, but I think the group's going to go inactive at any time now. At least, I think it's run its course. I will be on the Housing Corporation Board, once we get it up and running again. |
