Deseperate Housewives

I am sooooooo glad there is something for me to watch on TV Sunday nights until The Sopranos and QAF return to TV.

Did anyone catch this? It reminds me of Knotts Landing and Melrose Place wrapped into one. It doesn't help that most of the characters were on those shows too, as well as Y&R.

It is a GOOD SHOW!!! I was like :o and  at times but I LMAO at how the fire started.

I had not watched Sunday tv like this in a while but I can do this one. It will re air on Saturday @ 10 for anyone who wants to check it out.

Exquisite5 10-04-2004 10:14 AM

I really enjoyed this show. I like the whole abc lineup.

Desperate Housewives and then Boston Legal (and boy do I love anything related to The Practice)!

Sistermadly 10-04-2004 10:25 AM

Loved it. LOVED. IT. And I'm really happy that we get it two hours earlier than the folks in the US! ;)

AKA2D '91 10-04-2004 10:50 AM

I wanted to catch Boston Legal, but I had to finish watching Suburban Madness on CBS. I should have watched Boston Legal instead.

Steeltrap 10-04-2004 10:55 AM

Liked it, wish they'd change the time

Good show. I liked Gabrielle and Bree the best, even though Bree is not particularly likable and I was CTFU when Rex, her husband, complained about how her hair didn't move.

And when Gabrielle was rocking that Birkin, I was :D but that means if the show's a hit, there will be a run on them (no more cheap mirror image replicas for me. )

AKA2D '91 10-04-2004 11:35 AM

What do you think the "secret" is? I guess that's why the widower was digging the hole in the pool.

Those three little brats are a mess! They are the type you hate to love. :D

prayerfull 10-04-2004 11:46 AM

I loved this show and will probably make that my Sunday night lineup.

Love Gabrielle. LMAO when she started mowing the lawn in her formal attire.

What may be the secret? There's got to be a dead body or something buried under that pool.

Oh...and what about the measuring cup that Susan left at Edie's house when she started that fire? Uh...investigation?

Those BRATS need DISCIPLINE!!

It seems like the secret is an OLD ONE too. :o Maybe they robbed a bank!!

allsmiles_22 10-04-2004 12:55 PM

I enjoyed the show also. I am a bit confused. At the beginning of the show it showed a woman gardening. Then she began to tell the story of how it began last Thursday and how she killed herself. I was thinking isn't this the same woman, but they had a wake so she really died. Who was the woman at the beginning? Was it not the same woman who killed herself or was it just some random woman gardening?

NUPE4LIFE 10-04-2004 12:57 PM

I liked the show a lot! The 3 boys had me cracking up. It was funny though how she had to threaten her husband with a visit for him to come home. Then when he comes home, he's like let's do it without a condom and risk getting pregnant!

Gabrielle had me and my girlfriend cracking up when she went home and mowed the lawn just so she could keep screwing the gardner. I'm trying to figure the secret out as well. I think things are going to develop over the course of the season and we will find out the secret during the finale. Didn't get a chance to watch Boston Legal, I watched Nip Tuck instead. Anyone out there watching Nip Tuck? Man it's getting crazier each episode.

9dstpm 10-04-2004 05:47 PM

I watched it last night and I thought that it was rather interesting. I want to know what the widower's secret is too. I'm thinking dead body. Also, who sent the letter to the wife that caused her to kill herself? And what is the plumber's secret? The fire, those kids, and the model moving the yard in her evening gown were ROTFLMAO moments!! :p Can't wait to watch next week's ep.

LatinaAlumna 10-04-2004 08:06 PM

I liked it, too! I wonder if the show will continue to be narrated by the dead lady?

pretty edAKAted 10-04-2004 08:30 PM

OMG!
This show is hilarious ... I too was CTFU when the lady broke into her house and set it on fire and tried to put it out with wine

From the website, the premise of the show is to have dead lady narrate it always.

Sistermadly 10-04-2004 09:35 PM

My favorite part was when the woman with all the chirrun's husband came home from his business trip and wanted to have sex without a condom. She straight out SLUGGED him. :D

Conskeeted7 10-17-2004 05:26 PM

Did anyone see them on Oprah last week?

What about those audience members who thought they were like some of the cast members...the lady who sleeps around and walks in the yard naked...ewww

I saw that, and that recently divorced woman who likes to flirt with her friends' husbands. She likened herself to Edie (Nicolette Sheridan) except, "unlike Edie...she gets the guy".

Nicolette Sheridan sure has aged significantly sincce Knots Landing. The Botox doesn't seem to be working for her. :( Oh well.

nikki1920 10-17-2004 10:07 PM

You noticed that too!!

What about the dinner party? I literally fell off the couch when Bree made her revelation!!

I like this show!!

candygirl 10-17-2004 11:14 PM

I absolutely love this show. It gets better every week. I'm thinking that the widower's secret as something to do with death or something to do with a baby. The trunk that was thrown in the lake had teddy bears on it.

I wonder what they'll find on the tape Bree took from the therapist's office. She should be more worried about saving her marriage, if thats even possible. Her comment about her husband crying after he... well you know what she said. That was so uncalled for.

How long will Gabrielle have to bribe that little girl? I hope her husband doesn't find out. She's liable to loose her life. I can't recall right now, but is the gardner in high school? If so they could have at least made him a college student. If that was a man everyone would be accusing him of pediphilia (sp).

I'm also trying to figure out the plumbers secret. But I have absolutely no clue.

Did I mention that I love this show. There's so much going on.

Regarding the trunk, that sounds like a good theory. Looks like Gabrielle won't have to bribe the little girl much longer after seeing the previews for next week. Yes, the gardener is in HS.

I think the plumber might be an investigator of some sort. Perhaps he's linked in to that chest.

This season can only get better. On Oprah, they said that Richard Roundtree BKA Shaft will be making a guest appearance.

CrimsonTide4 10-18-2004 06:51 AM

I kind of figured like you Candygirl that the chest had something to do with the death of a baby. When they said human remains, I thought BINGO!! You know what? Maybe Mary Alice and her husband kidnapped 2 kids but one died and they had to chop him/her up and bury him/her under the pool.

Bree's revelation -- HOOOOOOOOOOO DADDY!!! I was like girl I bet you he ain't cried with you in a good while!!:p

Susan and her ex and his new chick -- I felt bad for her especially in regards to how the ex and new chick talked about her in front of her daughter.

Gabrielle and Ashley -- that little girl knows how to milk someone, lol

How is gardener boy 17 and still taking Algebra and Biology?!?!?! Shouldn't he at least be in pre-cal and physics? I mean I know I have not taught high school in 2 years but some things are just common sense/knowledge.

I was glad Lynette taught her husband something about his own kids.

btb87 10-18-2004 09:04 AM

I saw last week's encore presentation Saturday night and definitely made it my business to watch last night. This will be a show that I don't plan to miss!

Now my question: do ya think this is gonna be a "short" series, not unlike The 4400?

FeeFee 10-18-2004 09:09 AM

Once again, I have a reason to pay attention to television on Sunday evenings. I sooo like this show!! :D :D

prayerfull 10-18-2004 12:03 PM

My theory is that they had a child and that the son killed it and they tried to hide it. Plus, I think that the child was a product of an affair that maybe the woman had and maybe that explains the note - maybe it was from the man she had an affair with. The son seems CRAZY. Did you see him on the couch pretending to have taken his medication. (Coo-Coo)

nikki1920 10-18-2004 01:36 PM

See, I need to see the first episode again. :)

I wonder what is going to happen with Rex. I mean, how do you salvage a relationship after THAT?

LatinaAlumna 10-18-2004 02:02 PM

I don' t know if the secret will have to do with a dead child. It seems like a heavy topic for a largely comedic show. However, they did open with a suicide, so maybe they would.

After hearing John talk about his algebra and bio classes, I am wondering if he isn't a high schooler, too! That bugs me now because it is SO inappropriate. I thought he was supposed to be in college. I am trying to give it the benefit of the doubt and say he's in COLLEGE level algebra and maybe taking a lower division GE course in bio :)

futurestar1 10-19-2004 11:50 PM

Finally a way to get my Sunday Night fix

I too am missing my HBO shows. 4400 was a mini series. It was only supposed to be 3 episodes. How mad was I that I missed the last episode and they only played it once? grrrrrrrrr.

ladygreek 10-20-2004 11:10 AM

I'm glad it does encores the following Sat. because I can't give up my L&O-Criminal Intent on Sundays.:D

9dstpm 10-20-2004 12:37 PM

I love this show! I loved it when that little girl shook Gabby down to keep quiet about her and boytoy. (So that's where Miguel from "Passions" ran off to!) Rex and Bree.....what can I say? I was too through when she revealed his, um, "issue". Also, I would grabbed both tapes! She wasn't moving fast enough! I missed what was in the box!! I guess I'll have to watch it all again on Saturday!! I know next time not to sit up and try to write fiction while looking at TV.......

Steeltrap 10-20-2004 12:47 PM

Advertisers chicken out.

I don't get this mess at all. I understand the needs for morals and values, but can somebody get a stick out of their butts?

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Walt Disney Co.'s best shot at reviving its sickly ABC network may have plenty of skin and sin, but "Desperate Housewives" has lost a few advertisers as a result.

Tyson Foods, Lowe's Cos., and Kellogg have all aired spots on the weekly prime time soap that debuted late last month. And none plan to air any more.

Officials at two of the advertisers -- Arkansas-based Tyson Foods (unchanged at $15.15, Research) and North Carolina-based Lowe's Companies (up $0.05 to $56.45, Research) -- confirmed that the decision against buying more commercial time on "Desperate Housewives" was based on the hit show's cheeky script, which centers on a tony suburban neighborhood where four middle-aged women live in misery and a fifth who committed suicide narrates from the grave.

In all, five companies -- Tyson, Lowe's, Kellogg and frozen meal makers ConAgra Foods and Pinnacle Foods Group -- have come under attack in the last week by the American Family Association , a self-described "traditional family values" group that has over the years been a relentless critic of the entertainment industry.

While acknowledging the early defections, ABC officials insisted that the show has been attracting more advertisers, not fewer.

Through two of its member Web sites, the American Family Association has rallied thousands of followers, who last week began inundating the e-mail servers and phone lines at Tyson, Lowe's and ConAgra.

Within hours, Lowe's and Tyson notified the association that they were pulling out of any future advertising on the show, said Randy Sharp, the special projects editor for the American Family Association and the editor of its OneMillionMoms.com and OneMillionDads.com

Gary Michaelson, a Tyson spokesman, said the company bought air time on one episode before deciding against purchasing more. "The show is not consistent with our core values, which focus on operating with integrity and trust in all we do," he said.

At Lowe's, the company did not know that Whirlpool, the largest U.S. home appliance maker whose ads feature the Lowe's logo, was a sponsor until an ad appeared on "Desperate Housewives."

Lowe's officials were not pleased.

"Our advertising guidelines are such that Lowe's chooses not to advertise in controversial programming, including programming with gratuitous sex and violence," said Chris Ahearn, Lowe's director of public relations. She said steps have since been taken to avoid a similar breach of company policy in the future.

Calls to ConAgra were not returned. Sharp claimed victory, however, noting that the Omaha, Neb.-maker of Chef Boyardee, Healthy Choice and other packaged foods did not advertise on a recent episode of "Desperate Housewives." Sharp said ConAgra (Research) got about 36,000 e-mails last week from American Family Association members.

This week the association's membership set its sights on breakfast cereal maker Kellogg and Pinnacle Foods, the producer of Swanson frozen foods and Vlasic pickles. A Kellogg spokeswoman confirmed that the company, which aired one ad on "Desperate Housewives," is not planning to buy more commercial time on the show.

A call to Pinnacle Foods was not returned.

More bluff than bluster?
But there's reason to think the campaign against advertisers is much ado about nothing.

Headline-grabbing matchups like this can be a boon to networks because of the additional viewers who tune in just to see what all the fuss is about, said Steve Craig, a professor at the University of North Texas and an expert on controversial programming.

One oft-cited example is "Married...With Children," the parody of family life that ran on Fox from 1987 until 1997. When a Michigan housewife mounted a heavily-publicized boycott of the show, some companies that initially backed off from advertising later returned, lured by a ratings bump that coincided with the dustup.

"I don't think (Fox executives) were all that upset about the publicity," said Craig. And neither, he opined, are ABC officials today.

"Desperate Housewives" is already an overnight smash, ranked among the top prime time shows since its Sept. 26 premiere. The strong ratings are a key reason why television pundits say that ABC, bleeding money and stuck at No. 4 in prime time ratings, may finally be turning itself around.

One key measure: rates for a 30-second spot on the show have doubled, to roughly $300,000, since the initial round of ads were sold in May, two television advertising trade journals reported this week.

ABC officials sounded sanguine in a statement released to CNN/Money that proclaimed "Desperate Housewives" to be the TV season's No. 1 new show. "We are seeing tremendous demand from advertisers for the show," they said.

Sharp, the American Family Association official, acknowledged that the anti-"Desperate Housewives" campaign has so far targeted advertisers that seem susceptible to outside pressure.

"We usually look at the list of advertisers and we go (after) those that are considered family-friendly companies," said Sharp. "These folks know that moms buy their frozen products."

Sharp said he plans to keep the heat on ABC and not just because of "Desperate Housewives." Another ABC program that he says parents are complaining about: "Life As We Know It," a drama about three teenage boys described by ABC as "hormone-charged."

"The show is nothing but sex, sex, sex," said Sharp. "We're really looking hard at it."

The goods news for Sharp is, "Life As We Know It" has struggled in its Thursday night time slot opposite CBS and NBC's strong lineup. The bad news is, a little controversy might be exactly what the show -- and ABC -- is looking for.

SAUCY DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES UPSET THE ADVERTISERS

One of America's leading home improvement chains has pulled out of advertising during new hit show DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES - because the series is too racy.

Just three weeks into its run, the titillating ABC Sunday night show - which stars TERI HATCHER - has struck ratings gold, but many advertisers are less than happy with the racy content.

And now bosses of furniture and do-it-yourself store LOWE'S has insisted their ads are pulled from the show's commercial breaks.

A Lowe's spokesperson says, "We have a strict advertising policy against running in shows that contain gratuitous sex or violence and this is on that feel through the cracks."

Other advertisers are expected to follow suit as the series heats up with more sex scenes and suggestive scripts, but ABC bosses are far from worried.

In a statement, they say, "We are seeing tremendous demand from advertisers for the show."

LatinaAlumna 10-25-2004 05:08 PM

Anyone watch last night?!! The highlights (for me):

1. Bree pulling up a chair and lecturing her kid in the middle of the strip club!...then later referring to it as one of her "finest moments"!

2. Carlos, the cable guy, and the accidental hate crime!

3. Terry Hatcher telling off Mrs. Hooper!

I love it! :)

nikki1920 10-25-2004 07:03 PM

I missed Susan telling Mrs. Hooper off.

Re: advertisers
Well, if they don't want to be associated with shows that deal with sex and violence, they can always advertise exclusively on the kiddy channels (wait, does cartoon/futuristic violence count?) or on cable channels.

And I'm sorry, what is a "traditional American Family" and what are their values? Wouldn't that be specific to that family?

And aren't teenagers driven by sex at some point during those years?

Boy, some adults are stupid.

Co-Sign!

Mrs. Hooper is another Alice Kravitz (to another level) from 'Bewitched'. She gets on MY nerves.

I was LMAO when the widower came to tell the ladies that his wife sent messages to herself. HE thought they believed him, but they were like   :o...but ultimately  LOL

I'm glad (still haven't gotten all the names down) the mother with the HORRIBLE kids did NOT resort to giving the kids PILLS to control their behavior. All she needs is a BELT, SLIPPER, SHOE, etc. (um no, I DIDN'T go there!) :D :p

nikki1920 10-25-2004 07:47 PM

AKA2d.. LAWD... lol. A healthy dose of parental fear can reduce some aspects of ADHD.. lol.

I wanna be Gabrielle when I grow up!!lol

btb87 10-25-2004 08:18 PM

But I'm mad that Susan (is that Teri Hatcher's character's name?) was gonna give her ticket to Edie (Mrs. Huber's daughter). . . I guess she had to do what she had to do in order to get the measuring cup. I hope she and Mike eventually hook up! And I also love how she dismissed Mrs. Huber!

Noooo, I don't want her to hook up with Mike. We don't know what his investigative intentions are yet.

Jill1228 10-25-2004 10:33 PM

GURL, I was thinking the same thing! Someone needs to give them a "time out" right across their butts!
Belt, slipper, shoe, wooden spoon, switch...

First, AKA2d's post had me laughing and Jill's post brought back memories when she mentioned switch. Lord, ain't nothing worse than a wet switch! I didn't know Edie was Mrs. Huber's daughter. I just thought they were neighbors. It's sometimes difficult looking at Nicolette now compared to when she was the hottest thing on Knot's Landing for a while.

CrimsonTide4 10-26-2004 12:38 PM

Mrs. Huber and Edie are not mother and daughter; they are just neighbors.

Since ep #1 I have been an advocate of Lynette being a more HANDS ON type of parent.
