Case of the Handsign

*See the bottom of this post for GLOs represented in this thread.

In this thread, post pictures of the handsigns of various organizations so we can all see, enjoy and let out a hefty chuckle at some similarities.

This is not a war zone. If you have something negative to say, take it elsewhere.

*If you find pictures showing Greeks in a positive light, please feel free to post more than one pic of your organization.

NOTE:

Like many of you, I've run across some pictures of handsigns that resembled those of other organizations.

It has been said that there are only so many ways you can twist up a hand, so let's not get offended.

This is rather off topic but, in regards to the above photo, is there a particular name for the jackets the BGLO members are wearing? I think I've read that there is, but I'm not sure.

I can't speak for BGLO members, but I call mine a "crossing jacket." I've also called it a "line jacket."

where i'm from, if it's customized (meaning line number, line name, chapter name, year & season of crossing), we do call it a line jacket. otherwise, we just call them jackets.

Help the non-signing Greek Out!!!
In some of the pictures the signs make sence... in others I don't understand what they are trying to make.

What is a "shocker"?

preciousjeni 10-04-2004 11:44 AM

How about we stop trying to "figure out" what the signs mean since they are personal to each organization. And, I'm not sure if you all are aware but calling an orgs sign "the shocker" is not particularly respectful. You know full well that's not why it was chosen.

Wow, some of these signs are really creative. I guess my only concern would be the duplication of hand signs.

Handsigns are currently being duplicated, but most often by people who don't realize another organization is already using that sign. I've seen Theta Nu Xi's sign being used by organizations newer than we are!

ETA: Delta Phi Lambda sorority (Asian interest) uses a sign that is similar to Zeta Phi Beta's except that the middle finger crosses the ring finger.

Follow up: Ok, it's a little different than I remember (as I recall, in the original, their fingers were flatter).

*Actually, it looks like the Sigma Omega Phi handsign from the first page of this thread.

I was confused for a minute too, but look more closely - - it spells "Xi", it doesn't make the symbol. Hope that helps :)

Yep, you're right. The two crossed fingers make an X, and the pinky sticking up makes the I.

Aaah got it. Thanx. :)

lol, no, you're not the only one.

My best friend from hs is also an AZD (she went to UCF). When she got married, all the Alpha Xi's at the wedding gathered together for a picture. Of course I was in the picture and had a friend take one w/ my camera. Anyways, I got home and got the pics developed, and everyone was doing these things w/ their hands. I was like, "WTF?" I had never seen that before. I had to call my friend and ask her what that was...she was like, "Don't ya'll do handsigns?" I was like, no....

It took me about a year after that of looking at the picture before realizing they were spelling out the letter "Xi."

NoShame_Gamma 10-04-2004 01:55 PM

I don't know how to post pictures, so I hope this shows up. It's of Phi Beta Sigma, Delta Sigma Theta, and Gamma Alpha Omega. :)

Senusret I 10-04-2004 06:15 PM

Once I find the pictures.......

Alpha Phi Omega, Mu Sigma Upsilon, and Sigma Lambda Upsilon all have similar signs, though I think the SLU one that is similar is a secondary sign. I think it's cool....especially since I met an MSU who's dad was an APO in the Phillipines!

TheEpitome1920 10-04-2004 06:17 PM

If I'm not mistaken, Sigma Lambda Beta and Lambda Upsilon Lambda have the same handsign. I've seen both Sigmas and SGRhos use the 'Sigma' handsign.

I can't get my Gamma Sig pics to post! Darn...
Our handsign is similar to SGRho and PBS with the "Sigma".

SapphireSphinx9 10-05-2004 06:36 PM

at my chapter we have two handsigns... (i will try to post the pictures now - i hope they're not too big)

in this one, my sisters are modeling the more widely-known one... (used most commonly between two sisters)

and in this one, my goofy sisters are showing off the less widely-known one...

i've seen other orgs with handsigns that look almost identical to both. but each to org it means something different.

i like seeing all the different group pictures on here!

NoShame_Gamma 10-05-2004 07:05 PM

How to???

How do you post pictures?

Thanks a bunch... PM me so the thread doesn't get full of instructions... ;)

If you go to www.photobucket.com, you can create an account there, upload the photos from your computer, and then post it here on GC using the code with IMG tags.
