I don't watch cooking shows, really I don't cook much, if at all (I can but choose not to LOL). My parents on the otherhand are totally OBSESSED. I am going to see them tommorrow and I can totally predict when I arrive they will both be sitting in the living room in their recliner chairs watching the food network.

lauralaylin 10-02-2004 04:27 PM

I'm totally addicted to Good Eats right now. I think it's such a good show because it focuses on what you make in your kitchen, the easiest way to do things, and the best appliances to buy/own. My husband has also become addicted and because of the show become the main cook in the house. All he wants for Christmas is kitchen items. Alton Brown is coming out with a new cookbook this week which is about baking, so I'm looking forward to some good desserts in the next few weeks!

Ditto! I've watched the reruns over and over and over again...I hope the show creators will come back from wherever they're at to start the show again.

Iron Chef USA just didn't cut it.

smiley21 10-02-2004 10:56 PM

ooooh!!! i am a Food Network addict!!!! i drool over the foods they show on that channel. i love Alton Brown. he is so funny when he is cooking. i seriously could watch any of those shows. i LOVE the shows about all of the festival foods.

i am a true fan of the channel

norcalchick 10-03-2004 12:44 AM

With Iron Chef, I like when the commentator guy says someone's name, but it sounds like he's saying "Croissant!"

Ota, the reporter, is actually saying "Fukui-san!" to get the attention of the main commentator, Mr. Fukui.

RedRoseSAI 10-03-2004 10:36 AM

I love "A Cook's Tour" but it's not on very often. I also love both "40 Dollars a Day" (Rachel Ray is so cute!), and "Good Eats". And, though it's not really my style, "Paula's Home Cooking" is very soothing to watch.

I'm not a big fan of Emeril - his recipies, for the most part, are so complicated, and I just don't find his on-air demeanor appealing. I once made his sweet-potato brownies, and while they were awesome, it took THREE HOURS to make!!!

The Food Network web site is a wonderful resource for recipies - you can find just about anything on there. It and www.epicurious.com are the first places I go to find stuff (ignoring all the cookbooks I have in my cabinet...I have a small, uh, cookbook buying problem).

I also like:
Home cooking with Paula.
30 minute meals with Rachael
The dessert one, where the lady makes all desserts.
I think it's everyday Italian, with that one chick that's really skinny
Good eats
Unwrapped
I think it's called "The history of..."
Bobby Flay

It's the only channel that has something good on it all the time.

My Boyfriend and I are soooo addicted to Good Eats its not even funny. We have a DVR and have recorded at least 20 episodes (sadly our DVR broke so now we have none). I am a scientist so I love how he goes into the science of how to make different recipies. I have told Frank a many times that if Alton ever showed up to our house I would leave him in a heart beat!

Rachael Ray annoys me to NO END! LORD, does everything she puts in her mouth taste THAT good that she has to roll her eyes, and say "MMM!"??? C'mon!

I have a mission in life: to see Rachael Ray PISSED OFF!

NO ONE IS THAT FUKKIN HAPPY!

That said, I do watch her shows... for the info only. :)

My fave shows are "The Best Of..." and "Top 5".

BTW, is it me or does the host of "Top 5" seem to have girly hips and man boobs??? He's always hiding behind a table!!!

LOL! This is totally a thing with my friend and I - she did it once, and I knew IMMEDIATELY who she was imitating.

She has toned it down recently, though - did you notice? I guess she really can't say "ew, this is horrible!" seeing as she is there to give viewers tips on GOOD places to visit.

The other thing I think is funny is when she just "happens" to make a new friend in a city or visits a restaurant and begins a conversation with the staff that eludes to the fact that it's her first visit. Obviously, they have to do pre-visits and ok the camera crew, etc.. Again, what else can she do? "Hi, I'm here again, this time with my camera crew" doesn't make for good TV.

AUDeltaGam 10-04-2004 08:54 PM

I love Paula! I met her over the summer at her restaurant in Savannah, GA (which, by the way, serves the best food I have ever had!). She is just so sweet in person! :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one whom she annoys!

Oh, the other thing she says that really puts my thong in a bunch is "EVOO"!!! OH C'MON!!! SAY THE WHOLE PHRASE, BIATCH!!!!! SAY IT OR I'LL POUR IT DOWN YOUR THROAT!!!!

norcalchick 10-07-2004 02:47 PM

arrgghhh. I hate when Rachael says "EVOO" because right after she says that, she'll say "Extra virgin olive oil". EVOO is so stupid, and if you're going to say extra virgin olive oil, don't aggrivate the rest of us, and quit saying "EVOO"!

lauralaylin 10-07-2004 04:58 PM

Oh, I always wondered what EVOO means. I don't watch the show, but there's a great restaurant in Cambridge called EVOO. I always thought it was just a weird name.

BetteDavisEyes 10-07-2004 07:54 PM

Just last night, Rachel Ray made baked pasta shells with pesto and lots of cheese. My boyfriend & I ran to the grocery store, bought the ingredients, & had an awesome dinner. I love her show 30 Minute Meals.

Iron Chef also kicks some serious a$$.

Boy Meets Grill is also cool.

Entertaining with Michael something or other is a good show.

I can't stand the annoying lady from Barefoot Contessa but I like what she cooks so I watch even though I feel like strangling her.

Jill1228 10-08-2004 12:45 AM

My husband is an Iron Chef addict!

I watch Food Network for Food 911 and Ming Tsai

Tyler Florence and Ming Tsai are Too YUMMY! :D

I forgot about the Barefoot Contessa. She is such a Hamptons snob. Even her name makes me wanna hurl: Ina Garten...C'MON! Her real name is probably Betty Smith. And she has all these "gay" male friends who she just LOVES to cook for when her husband, the prominent East Coast university professor, is away for weeks at a time....HMMMM!!?!?!?!?! Me thinks Ina doesn't quite get enough in her vagina....

SHE MAKES ME BATTY! And her food is too damned complicated. It's always something like "Roasted Duck Confit with Bing Cherries and Roasted Shallots on Shittake Risotto served with Parmesan Asparagus and Rosemary Sea Salt Yeast Rolls".....ALL FOR A CHILD'S BIRTHDAY PARTY!!! C'MON YOU FOOD WHORE!!! WHAT HAPPENED TO FRIED CHICKEN FROM PATHMARK AND SOME ESKIMO PIES?!?!?!?

Ah yes, the descriptive food trend. I suppose it's better than the "surprise" trend of the 50s (Chicken Surprise, Tuna Surprise, etc.)

Speaking of retro food, I have a feeling that many of you would get a kick out of these two web sites:

The Gallery of Regrettable Food, which highlights recipes from the mid-century:
http://www.lileks.com/institute/gall...c/aaaaahhh.jpg
Good Lord, good Lord. This looks like . . . like Orson Welles' liver. Like a shaved Horta. Like a cinnamon roll made entirely out of horse fat and brown sugar. Like Jabba the Hutt's prostate. I don't know what the hell this is. Maybe a roast of some sort. If so, it's a good Depression-era diet aid: this is what you would eat if you had more money, so be glad you don't.

and also check out Weight Watchers recipe cards from 1974

http://www.candyboots.com/wwcards/ca...rangesalad.jpg
Um, I guess this is a salad best enjoyed at the house of that one scary lady down the street who never leaves the house and talks to her knicknacks.
I showed this card to a friend who said, "What the hell's in that bowl-- bong water?!"
Is that why the ceramic animals are so drawn to it? Is it their magical pond?
Why have they gathered? What do they want?

Bon Appetit!

SOPi_Jawbreaker 10-11-2004 02:06 AM

OMG, those links were hysterical. Thanks! That totally made my day!

FHwku 10-11-2004 04:03 AM

Chocolate with Jaques Torres
Boy Meets Grill with Bobby Flay
30 min meas with Rachael Ray
(al) Roker on the Road
Everyday Italian (*Giada De Laurentiis, so hot.)

ladyj39 10-11-2004 03:23 PM

I LOVE the Food Network! It's usually the first channel I turn to.

My favorites include:

30 Minute Meals
All American Festivals
The Best Of...
Food 911 (Tyler is yummy!) :)
Good Eats
Easy Entertaining
Date Plate was fun when it was on
Party Starters
Unwrapped

I can't stand Bobby Flay or Emeril though!

My sisters and I love to cook, so it's not unusual for us to see a recipe being made on TV, going straight to the store to get the ingredients, and making it that night.

My boyfriend's standard line is, "You're watching that food channel again?" Hey- he doesn't complain when he gets to eat my dishes. ;)

irishpipes 01-30-2006 07:26 PM

Rachael Ray is getting her own talk show. How good does THAT sound?

tinydancer 01-31-2006 10:02 AM

It's really funny that I watch the Food Network, because I DON"T cook!!

If I decided to cook, I'd look up Paula Deen's recipes. They always look good.

Actually, that is her real name. She's "Cousin Ina" to one of my Chi O sisters. :)

I'm a huge Food Network fan, watch it constnatly. Drives the husband crazy! But, I always say, he loves my cooking so Food Network IS important.

Just like my other time spent watching HGTV will pay off for him when we buy our first home and I fix it all up!

DeltAlum 01-31-2006 11:34 AM

Some pals of mine own the company that produces a fair amount of programming for that network, but I don't watch it, so I can tell you which ones.

:) Anything with Rachael Ray is my favorite
:) I also like *original* Iron Chef.
:) I like Good Eats w/ Alton Brown
:) And I also like the show where this one guy goes around to different places and learns how to cook different food--NOT Anthony Bourdan, but some guy who's really funny.

:( I HATE Bobby Flay
:( I DISLIKE Paula Dean
:( I also dislike Michael Ciarello (or however u spell his last name)

BetteDavisEyes 01-31-2006 02:05 PM

Everyday Italian w/Giada DeLaurentis is actually pretty good. My husband has a large collection of cookbooks that include almost all of Rachel Ray's books, Bobby Flay, Giada's first book (which has some amazing stuff in it) as well as every grilling and BBQ book he can get his hands on.

Iron Chef USA sucks ass!

Ina Garten makes me want to stuff her nostrils full of rosemary since she loves it so much.

Just watching Paula Deen cook makes me gain weight but it all looks so delicious. I'm anxious to try her crab soup that she made once. It looked amazing!

valkyrie 01-31-2006 02:51 PM

I don't watch any of this stuff, but WTF is the show where some woman makes stuff out of like canned food and box mixes?

That is Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee. I laugh hysterically at this show. I keep waiting for her to tell us to just go to the store and buy one of those pre-roasted chickens, put some parsley next to it, and serve it to our guests. Some of her ideas are actually good, but the first episode I ever saw was a strawberry cake. She just made it from a mix, used store-bought frosting, and then made it "fancy" by putting sliced strawberries on top. I couldn't believe she got her own show for that!

Actually, it's not so funny. There was recently an interview on NPR about this very phenomenon. Here's the link. If you click on "listen now" you can listen to the transcript:

Food Network = Porn

AOIIalum 01-31-2006 04:37 PM

I'm probably in the minority, but I adore all things Bobby Flay.

Rachael Ray used to be great before she got her makeover. I still watch her, but if I hear "EVOO" or "yummo" one more time I'll scream. However, since there have been two Cheap Trick sightings on Inside Dish she gets a pass for good taste in music ;)

Unwrapped, Good Eats and Food 911 are almost always good TV. Good Eats has actually been appointment TV for the boys before.

Anyone remember (and admit to watching) Ready Set Cook with Sissy Biggers?

uksparkle 01-31-2006 05:59 PM

The girl who hosts Everyday Italian gets on my nerves so bad. She has a huge mouth and 107 teeth.

epchick 01-31-2006 07:27 PM

Isn't Sandra Lee the same person who had the audacity to create that Kwanzaa cake??

kansas13 01-31-2006 09:43 PM

I LOVE the Food Network!! It's really the only channel that my husband and I agree on. I like to cook food, he likes to eat food...perfect match.

I like:
:D 30 Minute Meals (I just don't know how one women can make that many shows...does she EVER sleep?)
:D Unwrapped (gotta love Marc Summers...the old Double Dare host)
:D Ham on the Street (it's a new show...pretty random stuff, but quite interesting)

I HATE:
 Anything Bobby Flay (he was sooo rude when he won the original Iron Chef...I just can't get over it)
 Barfoot Contessa (I still watch it, but can't stand her)
 How to Boil Water (I LOVE Tyler, but really after 50 or more episodes I can't really believe that girl still doesn't know anything about cooking)

ragtimerose 02-01-2006 08:32 AM

I've been getting into Everyday Italian lately. Giada De Laurentiis has a similar style to Jamie Oliver...who I miss.

Bring back Jamie Oliver and the Naked Chef!

Iron Chef (the original Japanese show) kicks ass.

I used to like Emeril, but he went too "Hollywood" for me.

Can't stand Paula Deen. Her drawl just grates on me. (maybe it's because I'm from the South) My stepmom likes her, though.

The next time Rachael Ray says "EVOO" or "yum-o", I want to strangle her. I like the highlights in her hair, though. :)

I'm a Food Network addict. I admit it.

AOIIalum 02-01-2006 08:59 AM

Oops, I forgot to mention the related addiction--Food Network on Demand. Yet another benefit of paying for digital cable service! Love it as well!
