Thursday - The new Friday

Over the years, I've gathered one thing about most responsible SDSU students: they study all week, then go out and party, thereby comsuming every inhibiting solution imaginable.

But this past year or so, a lot more people have turn Thursday into the first day of the party weekend. As a result, a lot less students go to class on Friday.

My Public Relations professor, who has just started here after teaching at the U of Maryland, was wondering why there was a significant abscence of students on Friday. Our replies were "it's Friday." Her response was "so, people just don't go to class?" And everyone said "Yeah, Thursday's the new Friday."

Is that happening at your campus, or is this something that's normal?

KSigkid 09-21-2004 03:27 PM

That's the way it was at Boston U. as well...for people without Friday classes or work, Thursday was a big night to go out. A lot of the bars and clubs in Boston have Thursday night specials.

mu_agd 09-21-2004 03:30 PM

at Miami University, we always said the weekend started Thursday afternoon. A lot of people either tried to schedule their classes so they didn't have any on Friday, showed up hungover, or didn't show up.

astroAPhi 09-21-2004 03:30 PM

I think it happens as you get older. I never went out on week nights until junior year. That legal drinking age has a way of doing that to you.

_Opi_ 09-21-2004 03:31 PM

Well people here start their weekend on thursdays, that much is true.

Back in Toronto, Thursdays used to be college nights at the clubs/bars...I am not too sure about MI though.

ZTAngel 09-21-2004 03:33 PM

For as long as I can remember, UCF has always celebrated the first day of the weekend on Thursday. Hardly anyone I knew would purposely schedule a Friday class; we would only schedule Friday classes if that was the only day of the week a particular course was held or it was the only day of the week that a class would fit into our schedule. Also, we tried to schedule our Thursday classes to end by 4pm so that we would have time to go home, nap, and then get ready to go out.
The bars in Orlando have specials and events on Thursday nights.

kappaloo 09-21-2004 03:41 PM

Wednesday is the new Friday here. Both Wednesday and Thursday are big pub days, so many students will miss one (if not both) of Thursday and Friday.

HAHAHA I knew it.

I'm waiting for the old-timers to tell us how irresponsible we are and how we're wasting our education....

Actually, I was going to tell you that Thursday was the new Friday a few decades ago.

Wait... did I just concede to being an old timer?

Munchkin03 09-21-2004 04:46 PM

It's not so new. I had no Friday classes either semester Freshman year...so Thursday night was party night #1, Friday was chill w/ sisters or friends and get some work done, Saturday was party night #2.

But, now that I'm not in undergrad, and happy hours don't sound so desperate, Monday has become my party night. wOOt.

jharb 09-21-2004 04:48 PM

I haven't had Friday classes since Freshman year really. Here at Butler it's not a big deal, most houses do things on Thursday nights and I know Thursdays are a big bar night. It's a good time!

breathesgelatin 09-21-2004 04:50 PM

Here at W&L the big nights are Monday, Wednesday, and (obviously) Friday and Saturday. Thursday I think is just starting to kick in this year more so.

Lil' Hannah 09-21-2004 04:56 PM

My senior year, Monday was the new Friday. I mean I went to classes during the week, but they just started late in the morning so I could go out a lot.

Plus, most greek orgs at BU couldn't afford to have events at 3rd-party establishments except for on 'off-nights' - so many sorority events especially were tuesday or wednesday nights.

Some of the drunkest nights I remember were tuesdays or wednesdays - ksigkid can vouch, he was there for 95% of them.

GeekyPenguin 09-21-2004 06:37 PM

I don't think this is anything new...Thursday was Friday when my parents were in school.

ADqtPiMel 09-21-2004 06:42 PM

I don't discriminate, I go out all nights of the week.

But seriously, there is a reason why I only have one Friday class and it's at 2pm.

DeltaSigStan 09-21-2004 08:45 PM

Makes me wonder why my professor was wondering, if most people across the country often don't go to class on Fri. either.

Wednesday is the new friday Here at CSU because most of the students go to "College I.D." night at Peabody's which is across the street from the campus.

old timer chimes in

At Eastern Michigan, 20 years ago, Thursday was often Friday. It was a "suitcase" college, meaning that most students went home for weekends, so if you were going to go out with your college friends, you did it Thursday night. There was also an attitude that it's not too bad to party on Thursday night because you only had to get through Friday and then it was the weekend. You can deal with being too tired for one day of classes.

I never missed class and once I was in my professional program, we only had class on Mon and Wed with fieldwork on Tues, Thurs or Friday (2 of the 3 days). We all scheduled the fieldwork for Tues and Thurs if possible.

Damn, makes me feel a bit responsible.
I work Tues and/or Thurs at 6AM and have class MWF at 8, and work most Sundays at 6AM. So I only hit each night of the week about once in a month, (7 nights spread out over 30 days).

Monday night: a Pissed of Japanese Minnow Farmer or 2 and a pitcher of Miller Lite with some buds down at Welch Avenue Station

Tuesday night: the place to be is The Blazing Saddle in Des Moines for cheap draws.

Wednesday evening: buck burgers at Paddy's

Thursday night: $6 cover, then coin-drinks at Big Shots

Friday night: 2-for-1 bottles and strippers at The Garden in Des Moines

Saturday night: my neighbor is my bartender at Welch Avenue Station

Sunday night: 10PM drag comedy at The Garden in Des Moines, or just head to Welch Avenue Station and hang with some friends.

Amazing, no wonder there are so few 4 year students.

My schedual was 5 days week and I attended all classes.

Of course, I started at 7:30 in the AM and Last class got out at 11:30, AM.

Bars opened at 12:00. Hell, had to get a ride first!

Try this crap in the real world and live on the street, no money, no funny!

Good Times, was a TV Show only.

I whole-heartedly agree with ya, Tom.

Hey Dude, at least two intelligent people on GC. What night can you be in KC for a Drink!:D

My Buy!:D

As an official Old Person (i.e. someone who's been out of college for more than a year :p), I can say that I still consider Thursday night to be the first day of the weekend. I remember reading about how college students were going out on Thursdays in a magazine back when I was in high school, so it's not really a new thing, at least not around here. My older sister (who graduated college in the early 90's) says she used to do it, too. Personally, I like the idea of an extended weekend--I think the week should be 2 days long instead of the weekend.

hannahgirl 09-22-2004 06:18 AM

Akron is definately home to the Thursday night start to the weekend. If you wanted to know if someone was going to be out that night, all you had to do was show up and find out.

The trend used to be BW3's for ladies night till 12 (dollar drinks/dollar shots) and then head over across the street to Mannys for $5 draft pitchers. Nice.

Now its going downtown to the many bars down there or even a combination of that and the above. Still many good times either way and I sometimes wish I still went as often as I did.

not true. many people still get out in four years. i had semesters where i only had classes two days a week and i still got out in four as did many people i went to school with.

mmcat 09-22-2004 07:26 AM

thursday is a good thing. although i have always been of the belief that if you get past tuesday the rest of the week is downhill.
belly up to the bar boys...

PoohsHoneyBee 09-22-2004 08:47 AM

In my little college town, Thursday is definitely the new Friday. There is always something going on. But, my first class on Friday is at 10 (not too early) and it's my only one unless I have to work. Most of the people I know don't even have classes on Friday and more professors are starting to do their schedule that way.

winneythepooh7 09-22-2004 09:29 AM

In college, our "weekend" always started with ladies night on Wednesday's. By the time you were at school for a semester, your realized this and planned your classes to begin later in the day the next day. A lot of students also preferred going to classes longer on Tues & Thurs as opposed to the 3 day per week M-W-F schedule so they could have the 3 day weekend.

Now that I am a "grown-up" I occasionally will go out on a Thursday night because Friday's I try to plan my schedule pretty lightly at work.

veemers 09-22-2004 10:43 AM

*sticks out like sore thumb*

thursday is not friday, here. if anything, it's the new sunday, because it's the night when people work really hard to get their projects and homework done so that they can party on friday and saturday nights.

My schedule is 5 days a week.
I attend all classes.
I will graduate in 4 years- summa cum laude, if my GPA stays the same.
I work 20 hours a week.

Yet, I still manage to go out at least 3 or 4 times a week. It's called time management. Don't judge people that you don't know.

I had Friday classes maybe 2 semesters during my college years. During my senior year, I had class only 3 days week. I somehow managed to graduate in 4 years. So did most of my friends who never had Friday classes and the ones who took longer to graduate were the ones who did a double major. Hmmm...

Yo yo that's because those of us who are MU students (three different MUs and a UM in the harem alone!) have an obligation to graduate in four years so that our parents do not go broke from providing for us.

Sister Havana 09-22-2004 12:31 PM

Thursday began the weekend at IU back in the day when I was there (both go-rounds.) I had no Friday classes my last few years, so that was good. :D Of course, I didn't go out nearly as much as I did the first time around when I went back as an older student...:p

Yeah.

I wish he wouldn't judge 5 year students either. Not everyone can afford to take 18 hours a semester.

co-sign.
I'm 5 years as I did not start my Curriculum Instruction course string until the middle of my 2nd year at ISU, thus adding the teaching certificate and coaching endorsement bumped me up a year (including a semester of student teaching). I took Tom's remark to mean those getting only 1 major and maybe 1 minor taking more than 4years.

although not necessarily true. i think those who took longer were ones that couldn't decide on a major or who just didn't want to get out of a school. i had a good friend in school who triple-majored in the business school and got out in four years. he did work his ass off taking 18-20 credits a semester, but he still did it.

Even if he did mean it what's wrong with that? I don't see the rush of getting out of college (within reason of course, 5 years is the cut off, lol).
