Dave Chapelle's Block Party (A Fugees Reunion?)

Fugees Reunion

By Josh Grossberg

It was a concert for the ages--for those lucky enough to have known about it.

After an eight-year hiatus, innovative hip-hop supergroup the Fugees reunited and performed at a secret show organized by comedian Dave Chappelle over the weekend in Brooklyn.

Billed as Dave Chappelle's Block Party, Saturday's gig took place in the middle of the Brooklyn neighborhood of Ft. Greene and featured a who's-who of R&B and rap royalty, including Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, Common, the Roots, Dead Prez, and Jill Scott.

I read about it, and I'm beyond jealous of New Yorkers today. But the worst part is that only a few hundred attended a FREE hip hop concert w/ those artists. Maaaaaaaaan, :o

I really hope the Fugees get it together to make a new album. Hip Hop is lacking in several areas, and they could help fill a void.

AKA2D '91 09-21-2004 09:43 AM

When is his Showtime show to air? I think it's this month.

So I take it that Lauryn and Wyclef have made up?

OrangeMoon 09-21-2004 10:26 AM

Seems like it. Maybe Lauryn’s change has allowed her to bury the bad vibes and move on, at the same time giving her wisdom not to get caught up Wyclef's creative madness.

I'm not trying to be funny but does this mean Pras is done with drugs?

Wow, I guess I've been MIA for a while, lol. So, for all of you wondering, I'm the one who went to the block party. Y'all this was by far, THE BEST concert I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot of concerts. And it was FREE! The best part was when Lauryn came out. I couldn't believe my eyes! It took her a while to warm up, but when she did... Lauryn is BACK! Aside from her, Jill Scott was awesome, as usual. Everyone did a really good job. I'm really over Kanye, so I could have done without him. The only downside was that it rained off and on throughout the day (light spurts of drizzle) and it lasted about 9 1/2 hours. We couldn't drive there (they bussed everyone to the "secret" location), and they really frowned upon people leaving early because it was being taped. So, it was a looooong day, but SO worth it.

I don't know exactly when Season 2 will be out but Amazon.com believes that it will most likely be released before Christmas to try to catch the seasonal rush. If so it will most likely be with little to no musical guest segments like on the Season 1 DVD. I've read that going without the musical segments helps to keep the price low because they do not have to pay the royalties and the fees that are associated with that and in the long run more people will buy it and in turn watch the show to see the musical segments that weren't on the DVD.

October 20, 2004 -- The "Chapelle's Show Season One: Uncensored" DVD has now become the biggest-selling TV show on DVD, surpassing "The Simp sons: The Complete First Season" with over two mil lion units sold, according to Videoscan and retail sources. The DVD version of Dave Chappelle's Comedy Central show has also spawned "Chappelle's Show: Season Two Uncensored" (Feb. 8).

Chappelle, who recently inked a two-year, $50 million deal with Comedy Central to continue hosting his show, is also the focus of tonight's "60 Min utes Wednesday" as he sits for an interview with Bob Simon (8 p.m./Ch. 2). Chappelle, obviously influenced by the comedy of Richard Pryor, is amazed to hear that Pryor's wife told "60 Minutes Wednesday" that Pryor feels as though he's "passed the torch" to Chappelle (Pryor has MS and is incapacitated).

"All right, that's more pres ure than $50 million," Chap pelle tells Simon. "He was the best, man."

I heard Dave was on 60 Minutes II last night. Did anyone see it?

I saw it! He brought and lives on a farm in Ohio. Also, his mom is a MINISTER with a Ph.D. The reporter kind of asked her if she was happy with Dave's career path. He's really a nice guy.

The upcoming third season of Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show is apparently only half-baked.

Work on the hugely anticipated new season of Dave Chappelle's sketch show is behind schedule due to its 31-year-old ringleader's illness and lack of new material from his writing staff, according to the New York Post.

The new season was supposed to premiere Feb. 16. It will now begin airing sometime in late April or May, per the Post.

"Dave--and his entire production crew for that matter--got a bit of a late start on writing season three," network spokeman Tony Fox told the newspaper.

Chappelle has reportedly been laid up with a nasty flu bug, adding to delays brought on by the lack of written material so far for season three. The Emmy-nominated comedy is currently on hiatus for the holidays and will resume production in January.

Last week, Paramount pushed back the season 2 DVD release--which had been slated to hit stores Feb. 8 to coincide with the new TV season--presumably due to the production slowdown. No new release date for the DVD has been set yet.

There was no immediate comment Monday from Comedy Central or Chappelle's publicist.

Since the offbeat sketch show debuted in January 2003, it has steadily built a large following. By the end of season two, the half-hour show was often pulling in more than 3 million viewers. The DVD release of season one currently ranks as the all-time top-selling TV show on DVD.

In August, Chappelle reupped with Comedy Central in a massive two-year deal, valued at $50 million by the Hollywood Reporter. The deal also set a new Industry precedent--reportedly giving the funnyman a large cut of backend DVD sales.

In addition to his gig at Comedy Central, Chappelle had been working on a book for Hyperion. No word on the book's status; there's also no word on the rumored movie deal with Paramount for Chappelle to portray Rick James in a biopic.

Prior to work on his new TV season, Chappelle had been overseeing a feature film/DVD project combining sketch comedy with footage from a Brooklyn block party filmed in September that featured a reunited Fugees. A 10-person crew, directed by Michel Gondry, captured the Chappelle-conceived event.

Glad I read this before I gave Amazon my $$ to pre-order. I would've been  if I paid for it and had to wait longer than February.

Gina1201 02-17-2005 01:03 AM

In case anyone is having CS withdrawls the next 5 Wednesday nights at 10:30 PM(tonight was night one) Comedy Central will be counting down the top 5 Chappelle's Show episodes as voted by the fans. Tonight's episode (#5) was Making the Band. "Breast Milk. . . you made my daaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy!!". I'm hoping to see that Rick James episode one more time so I can record it on my DVR, since the new season still isn't on yet.

AKA2D '91 02-17-2005 09:05 AM

Dave hasn't aired the Rick James episode since Rick passed away. I hope he will allow it to air, ESPECIALLY if the fans voted for it.

THANK YOU! The commercials were airing on CC back in February saying that it was going to be available, and why was I out at Target every day for 2 weeks to look for that mess until I found out that it was pushed back. I'd heard that Season 2 wasn't going to be put out until Season 3 aired, but I guess with the push back, they decided to come to their senses. YAAAAAY!!!!

"Chappelle's Show" Shut Down

From Yahoo!:

Chappelle's Show is a no go, bitch!

In a surprise announcement Wednesday, Comedy Central announced that the highly anticipated third season of Dave Chappelle's will not make its May 31 premiere date.

"Comedy Central has suspended production on the third season of Chappelle's Show until further notice," network spokesman Tony Fox said in a brief statement. "All parties are optimistic that production will resume in the near future."

Remainder of Story

This also means no DVD at the end of the month!!

UpPinkies 05-05-2005 02:21 PM

Dear Dave,

Im tired of this !@$#! Now I have waited and waited for this third season, but now your starting to get on my last nerve. Where is the new material?

See, you need to leave the cows and chickens alone on that farm in Ohio and get your azz back to the comedy central studios and start taping. You, Charlie Murphy, Paul Mooney, the guy that plays Ashy Larry should have something together by now?

Did the 50 million dollars trip you out? I can help you get back on track and get my third season aired.

Don't let me have to step foot in Ohio!

Your fan..

P.S. If your still sick, then you need to find a better doctor.

I don't know. Maybe Comedy Central is trying to push him to just put out a season since they paid him $50 million dollars but Dave doesn't want to put out an inferior product. I'm hoping that that's the reason.

I hear you Nupe, but if I just dropped "50 Large" in somebody's direct deposit, I should't have to "push" for a dayum thing.....

Maybe DC needs a Blockbuster night. Rent some ole head Pryor, Foxx, Murphy for inspiration. then head to the studio and roll tape!!!!

DELTAQTE 05-06-2005 09:25 AM

I think it's pretty obvious that Dave is under huge pressure and he's beginning to crack. Dave was known kinda before this and just thought "Hey I'll get this show and be known some more." and BAM! the show hit hard and he's now THE Dave instead of Dave that funny comic you used to see on t.v. every so often.

He's under tremendous pressure from his peers(and his audience!) to top himself and I think we'll be hearing that he's checked himself into a hospital for exhaustion or a breakdown.

They said on the radio this morning that the rumor going around is that Dave has converted to Islam and has a problem with some of the sketches he's done for the new season, hence the drama with Comedy Central.

Interesting theory, Deltaque, and I'm sure there is some pressure. But is it really all that?

I hate it when people compare individual A's situation to individual B's situation and say "why can't A do what B did"...but I'll do it here.

Remember Ced the Entertainer? He rode the wave, blew up large in our community, had a national show which .....didn't bust a grape, comedically. He just went back to being the funniest stand up out there IMO. (I was going to say the funniest comic out there pound-for-pound, but Ced is carrying a few lbs these days  so I'll hold off on that one.)

...but then no one has handed me $50 million yet and said "now be funny" so maybe I'm wrong.

I bolded the key word that makes Cedric different from Dave Chapelle.

Dave has crossed over, Cedric hasn't(which is why his show didn't work). Yeah Cedric is kinda known, but not like Dave is now. There's a reason why The Dave Chapelle show is the biggest selling DVD of all time, it's not just us buying and watching him.

I think for Dave, the show has gone from a bunch of him and his friends doing a fun show and putting out skits they thought was funny, to a lot of pressure to top themselves and it's just not fun anymore. There's probably in house fighting between everyone as well (which is sad). :(

AKA2D'91: Yeah Cedric did a great job! He's getting there no doubt, but Dave can't even go to Disneyland with his kids without people of all races yelling "I'm Rick James B****!" lol

AKA2D '91 05-06-2005 10:27 AM

I'll say Ceddy has kinda 'crossed over'. He spoke/performed at the White House Correspondant's dinner last Saturday night. That's a BIG gig, especially for "us". :D

ETA: However, I know what you are saying.

lostnfound117 05-06-2005 12:56 PM

I'm too through! I was so looking forward to buying Season 2. He was so out of control man!! SIGH...............

vanda 05-11-2005 04:55 PM

E! reported that friends of Dave said it was pressure, too much partying and creative differences with Comedy Central is what made them close production.

Gina1201 05-11-2005 05:45 PM

Well, the new scoop is that the season 2 DVD is still coming out this month as planned. However, Comedy Central will be airing all of the bonus footage from season 2 every Tuesday in May at 10 PM EST.

All times are GMT -4. The time now is 03:24 PM.
