Broadway I just noticed we have an "entertainment" forum and everything is radio and TV... no theatre... so is anyone else here a theatre buff and enjoy musicals like I do ?? I must admit I'm a total Rent addict... ever since I heard the music like two years ago... obsessed know every word practically... !! anyone else got favs or share my love of Rent ? |
|
RENT addict I was going to start a thread like this... I LOVE RENT. I saw it when it first came out in 1996. I just saw it again the other night in Vancouver. The song "Seasons of Love" sends chills down my spine. I am surprised I haven't worn out the soundtrack! :D |

Actually, there are several Theatre Topics, including one about Tony Awards, one on what shows you've seen, what roles you've had, etc. You might try a search -- if I have time I'll do one. |

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MUSICALS!!!!!! On Broadway I saw "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (I actually got Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parkers authographs from that one), "Miss Siagon", "Beauty and the Beast" and "Les Miserables". God, in AZ I've seen Les Miserables like 5 more times (I've now memorized the ENTIRE musical. LOL). Titanic once, Miss Siagon (2 more times), Phantom 4 times, Rent 3 times, Joseph twice, West Side Story twice, Showboat, Evita and Fiddler on the Roof. While visiting family this summer in NC we saw a production of Bye Bye Birdie. I've also seen, in high school productions, Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, Snoopy, Grease, Anything Goes and How to Succeed in Business (again). At a college level I saw the musical Work (or Working I can't remember the exact name). I've been in The Wizard of Oz, The Music Man, Peter Pan, The Sound of Music and Lil' Abner. I CANNOT wait to see The Lion King. AZ is finally bringing Lion King to Gammage next January through March. I'm so excited. I also want to see Chicago on stage (although I own the DVD of the movie with Catherine Zeta Jones). I would also love to see Caberet. If I could be in any musical I would chose Les Mis. I've always told my mom I would love to play a whore "Lovely Ladies" in that. LOL. I am such a musical freak. It's kind of pathetic. :) |
|
I LOVE musical theater. Sac State actually put on a really good production of Caberet last year. A couple of my theater friends had leads. My brother was the musical theater guy in the family though. His high school did Grease, The Music Man, Fiddler, and Little Shop of Horrors. But I've seen other productions of Guys and Dolls, Tommy, How to Succeed... and a few others. I haven't seen professional musical theater yet unfortuately. I need to go see Lion King before it goes away... but I don't know if I'll get around to it. |

I agree. Rent is awesome. I never take advantage of all the shows here in the city and I am so close.........I gotta do more of that. Rush seats are pretty cheap too and during the week you get to move down usually after intermission. |

OK, here goes: Mrs. DA was a Theatre major in college and taught it in high school as well as doing summer stock. Her brother and sisters were also involved in high school musicals. She was "Outstanding Freshman in Theatre" her first year of college. Daughter #1 majored in Musical Theatre for two years before getting a Graphic Design degree. She appeared as Martha in The Secret Garden on the main stage as one of the ten top high school productions in the country at the International Thespian Festival her senior year in HS. She also did Working, Fiddler, Once Upon a Mattress and Little Shop of Horrors. She now is playing the female lead in the Fantastiks. Her husband is an actor/director/choreographer. She has done Secret Garden again twice, Into the Woods (Baker's Wife), Molly Brown (Molly), How to Succeed, Godspell, Superstar, Children of Eden and a lot of other professional and community theatre stuff. She also does voice over and on camera commercial work. Daughter #2 did some theatre in HS, but not a lot. Although, like the other two, she was in the top select choirs. (She was our jock -- varsity volleyball) Son #1 is majoring in Musical Theatre. He won solo vocal twice and vocal duet once at the Colorado State Thespian festival, and then won solo vocal nationally twice and performed on the main stage at the International Festival at Lincoln both times. He was Colin in The Secret Garden and Jack in Into the Woods in community theatre while in HS. He played Ren in Footloose, Adam in Children of Eden and Puck in Puck's Potion -- a musical written especially for his high school in which he got to "fly" along with seven other cast members. It was the most people that "Flying by Foy" had ever had in the air at one time -- even on Broadway or in Vegas. He also had ensemble parts in City of Angels and one other show that slips my mind at the moment. In college he has been in named roles in Chess, Sweet Charity, and A Little Night Music. Presently he is in rehearsals for one of the lead roles in Assassians. As a middle school student, he toured nationally with the Colorado Children's Chorale. He auditioned for five "highly selective" music and/or musical theatre college programs (including Cincinnati College Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, Indiana School of Music, Northwestern and the Weiszenhoffer School at Oklahoma) and was accepted in classes of 15 or 16 in all of them. He wants to give Broadway a shot -- God help him. My wife and I give each other season tickets to the Broadway Series at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts every year for Christmas. It's a really outstanding series which has included the road show premieres of The Lion King and Sunset Boulevard. I saw Whistle Down the Wind in London. In New York I've seen, Promises, Promises (years ago while in college), Cats, Les Miz, Blood Brothers, Phantom, Sunset Boulevard, Miss Saigon, Rent, Aspects of Love, Nine, Hairspray, Movin' Out, Aida, Lion King and Wicked. There are a few more, probably which don't come to mind at the moment. In my previous job I used to get to NY reasonably often. Mrs. DA and I saw most of the above in Denver when their tours came to town. We also saw the world premiere (trial balloon) of Brooklyn at the Denver Civic Theatre. It opens on Broadway this Fall. So, I guess you could say that Musical Theatre is a big part of our family life. I can't carry a tune in a bucket. I can sing about one note. I think it's an R. Proud father, husband and patron of musical theatre signing off. |

I love musicals. I would go to shows more often if I had more money. However, I do want to try to see Little Shop soon, for the sheer amusement value of seeing Joey Fatone on Broadway. (By the way, when I first saw his billboard in Times Square, I thought it was Eugene Levy. It looks just like him.) Shows I've seen on Broadway: Beauty and the Beast (x2), Rent, Phantom, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Assassins. |

Since the shows are named after you, how come Judas get such great songs? |

ASUADPi, You will absolutely L-O-V-E The Lion King!!!!! The music, costumes, and set design are just amazing! You'll die when you see it! I saw Chicago when it came to Charlotte, NC and wasn't too impressed. Don't get me wrong, it was good. There is a surprise element to it and it's very humorous! I also am in love with The Phantom of the Opera. Saw it once in Charlotte, NC and loved it! I have seen all three movies. My mom went with me to see it in Charlotte and she hated it. She didn't understand why someone would write a movie, book, and musical on something so weird. Those are her words, not mine! :p |

Lion King is amazing one of my sisters works as a concession seller at the theatre where it's showing here in SF so I got good seats and had a great time ! Has anyone seen Wicked yet or read the book ??? I'm not gonna lie it's amazing I highly recommend it. |
|
Saw Wicked last time in NY. Remarkable Show. Second or third favorite of all time for me. |
|
 I just saw Dracula. It wasn't good. :( |
|
I'm waiting for the Sweeney Todd revival. |

Other than that, I want to see "Brooklyn: The Musical." It had it's "trial balloon -- shakedown" here in Denver and the music and voices are spectacular. I want to see it on NY to see what changes have been made. |

I just got back from NYC and saw the following: Avenue Q Wicked My husband also saw: Spamalot Good Vibrations He's a high school drama teacher and we took 38 kids to NYC for a theatre trip...how insane was that?? LOL For those of you able to get to NYC or Las Vegas by the end of the year, go see Avenue Q!! It's hysterical!! You'll never look at muppets the same way again!! Wicked was also wonderful...it's coming out to California in June 2005...another "don't miss!" I also love RENT, Phantom, Chicago and many of the classics.. We're going to London in the Summer and already have tickets for "Mary Poppins." Can't wait!! |

I am, however, suprise how good The Woman in White sounded. Rumor has it that the Broadway opening will not have Michael Crawford. Instead, Michael Ball will take the lead (who is a better actor and singer anyway). |

However, listen to Once Upon A Time: http://www.brooklynthemusical.com/themusic.htm# You can stream it from the link above. Eden Espinosa, who I think is one of two left from the Denver cast is amazing. Man, can she belt! I saw Idina Menzel in Wicked in NYC, (Espinosa was her understudy (and heir apparant to the Elphiba part) and played the part on Broadway for a while before going back to Brooklyn (how could anyone do that?), and I really think Espinosa has the stronger voice -- which I can hardly believe I said. So, I'd still like to see it. |

Four years ago I saw Phantom on Broadway. I've been involved with a few musicals myself, but with the pit orchestra, so our job was easy compared to what the actors were doing. There's no way that I would ever sing, dance, and act. That takes talent. |

Another voice that I'm loving right now is Maria Friedman. She is just brilliant in The Woman in White. I do believe that that musical is ALW's best since Evita. |

I, too, am I huge musical theater geek. :D I've been in: The Music Man The Wizard of Oz Fame Oklahoma Crazy for You Anything Goes I've Seen: Cats Aida 42nd Street Phantom of the Opera The Lion King You're a Good Man Charlie Brown Rent West Side Story Oklahoma Once Upon a Mattress Lil Abner The Sound of Music WICKED! Wicked is by far my favorite of the show's that I've seen. I agree that I wasn't completely blown away by Idina Menzel, BUT I think that Kristin Chenowith is the CUTEST thing EVER! And she is SO talented. I was really impressed with her. |

Wicked is finally here! The Chicago cast takes over in about a month. I really am going to try to see it. Did anyone else hear Avenue Q will not tour but instead set up permanently in Las Vegas? I'm a little disappointed because I wanted to see that and I don't have New York in my sights just yet. |
|
Well that's cool - I'll be in Vegas this summer. |
