What Not to Wear

I did a search, and didn't see anything. If this is already a thread could someone please direct me to it...

Does anyone watch this show? I love it. I caught it this afternoon, but I think it was the same as last night's episode. There was a sista on there with locs. They didn't pressure her about her hair or anything. And they got her in some clothes that really complimented her, too. I wish someone would nominate me to go on that show. I don't have a bad sense of fashion or anything, but $5000 on a new wardrobe couldn't hurt at all.

jojapeach 09-11-2004 11:31 PM

It's not just you. I like the TLC version, but I love the BBC America version which is the original. I just think TLC takes far too long to tell similar stories.

So, after watching the show, I feel you on wanting to be nominated for that new wardrobe. They really hook up the nominees with great fashion tips that suit their body types. I'm glad that everyone seems to take to these tips very well. Sometimes, it does seem that everyone is being transformed into the same sophisticated style of dress, but if they're being brainwashed, then the end result makes the brainwashing worth it. :p

Steeltrap 09-12-2004 09:35 AM

I've never seen the TLC version, only the BBC America. I think part of the show's premise is not to hassle people about their weight, hairstyle (unless it's completely out of date), etc. IMO, that's a good thing. If you want to lose weight, fine. If not, why not get nice clothes, deal with it, have some fun?
;)

Neosoulchild 09-12-2004 10:20 AM

I didn't even know it was on BBC. What time does it come on? Is it the same title, "What Not To Wear?" I am going to have to Tivo it now.

Yes, it has the same name. Most of TLC's shows are BBC knockoffs. Trading Spaces, While You Were Out, Clean Sweep, etc, are replicas of BBC shows. I actually like the TLC versions better.

What Not To Wear is one of my FAVORITE shows!! It's amazing that some people put up such resistance to Stacy and Clinton. There is NO way that some of these people actually think that their styles look good. They fight tooth and nail for their raggedy old clothes. I see people almost want to fight, get flip at the lip, cry, scream, etc. to keep that garbage.

I would be on the first thing smoking to Manhattan if they ever pop up on me!!

Intense1920 09-12-2004 01:04 PM

I love that show. I can never catch the BBC version but I watch the TLC version all the time. I would love to get my wardrobe spruced up but I don't want to be on tv. LOL.

kateshort 09-12-2004 07:46 PM

I was so glad to see how Nick treated Tiffany's hair-- my husband was thinking they would cut it off, but I told him she was a natural and would fight tooth and nail for her locs! (A few months ago I had no idea regarding locs and natural hair-- so thanks to the NPHC ladies and other women on GreekChat who were willing to post about natural styles... I've learned a lot from your perspectives.)

TLC's WNTW with Stacey and Clinton definitely focuses on fitting clothes to the body you have; they've been more clear recently (at least in what gets on air on the show itself) in that you can go for things that fit at the hips and thighs, and have someone take it in at the waist, and that things won't fit perfectly off the rack every time for any woman.

Much better and many strides away from Wayne and Stacey. Wayne was the one who said something like "Alpha Delta Pi-- you girls need to stay away from the pie." Clinton is much better about body size issues.

NiaX 09-13-2004 12:42 AM

I haven't watched WNTW (TLC's version) in a while...but I would like to be on this show....and also "A Makeover Story".

I don't think I look bad...but I think a lil bit of advice wouldn't hurt.

MeezDiscreet 09-13-2004 01:45 AM

i LOVE this show. i'm glad that they got stacy and clinton because the first two hosts were too mean.

what's funny is how the guests put up such a fight but in the end, they are so thankful. and you can see their new attitude. do you all remember the puerto rican lady who had the hickies? she was quite pissy at the beginning but at the end, she had a whole new attitude of "i'm sexy."

sometimes, i don't like how carmindy does the make-up. all that blush makes the sistas look like clowns. and did anyone see the tall sista that was on there with the natural that ol' boy cut into a box, streaked it blond and twisted it?? oh, we're talking HIDEOUS so i was scared that he was going to mess tiffany up so i was quite relieved when he didn't.

RedefinedDiva mentioned a makeover story and i must say that i don't like the new format. having these "makeover coaches" is so blah. that black guy grates my nerves and that white guy is corny as hell!!

kissy324 09-13-2004 08:03 PM

WNTW is one of my favorite shows. I would LOVE to go on a $5000 shopping spree in New York. However, I do not like the BBC version of this show.

On TLC I swear that it's always been Stacey. After Wayne left, though, and when Clinton started, they totally started to grow her hair out and flat-iron it, so now it looks shiny and long and close to her face instead of blow-dried at shoulder/chin length. You would think she was at least 5 years older if you saw her from the Wayne days... she looks a bit younger now.

Oh, Nick totally screwed up that woman's hair. She didn't need to look like Aretha! I wonder if that didn't teach him not to mess with a natural hairstyle...

Carmindy I run hot and cold on. I tend to think that she puts on too much blush, too much lip gloss, and too much smoky lower lid eyeshadow/liner. It's usually a good look if you're going out in the evening, but a bit much for daytime. The colors usually look good, though.

RedefinedDiva 09-13-2004 09:34 PM

I don't know Wayne. I just got hip to the show about a year or so ago. Stacy is a little overly dramatic sometimes. She is always trying to make snappy comments and the way she looks into the camera drives me crazy sometimes.

lovelyivy84 09-13-2004 09:40 PM

I watched one episode with Wayne and Stacey and haaaated it!

I LOVE the BBC What Not to Wear. Trini and Susanna rock!

rho4life 09-14-2004 06:02 PM

i like both TLC and BBC, but sometimes Nick just doesn't know/get how to deal w/ Af-Am women and their hair, and different hair alternatives.

[FONT=century gothic]Are you talking about one episode in particular? Other than the one episode where he twisted the woman's hair, I think he's been pretty good. He jacked her hair up though. She kinda looked like she had a Bart Simpson cut going on. There was an episode with a Canadian woman who looked like she could be mixed. He showed her how to get better curl definition, and I liked her hair. In fact, I stole his technique and currently use it on my own hair. MeezDiscreet, I feel you with Carmindy and all that blush she likes to use. There are a couple of girls at the mac store in the galleria who could definately hook a sista up better than Carmindy. /FONT]

...and some of the men in the mac store at the galleria too...

but, he also messed up that woman's hair who had the euro-lock hair. the cut just wasn't cute. and there was that one time when they had the young girl who's hair looked healthier when he was finished but i didn't like the cut (carmindy also jacked her up with pink blush, eye shadow and lipgloss)

That look wasn't hot to begin with. Who in the world EVER told her that silver clips that attach to the hair produce a natural look? That hair was looking ragged. After Nick got to it, it looked worse because it was just... straight. He kept tossing it forward like he was proud of himself, but it just looked like fake hair. If he would have put some mousse in it or whatever yod do to curl it up, it may have been a cute shoulder-length curly look.

As for Carmindy, NO ONE ever seems to look good after she puts blush on them. Caucasian people can pull that off, but I truly feel that African-American women look best with no blush or a brownish-bronzy blush, almost close to skin tone. We don't have rosy cheeks and we don't ever turn red like that, so it just makes us look "made up" when we try those looks.

I don't want to discriminate or even make it seem like Caucasian stylists can't do their jobs on everyone, but I have seen an overwhelming amount of makeover-type shows to have a personal preference for these shows to have African-American stylists and make-up artists for the African-American clients.

I would LOVE to go on this show for the $5,000 but the THOUGHT of there being secret footage of me makes me  :o .

Also...does anybody know why they have these folks shopping at Prada, Versace and whatnot? Couldn't they get more bang for their buck if they went to a reasonably priced store with quality clothing (i.e. Ann Taylor)?

So I'm gonna throw away my ENTIRE wardrobe for five outfits?!!?

Neosoulchild 09-15-2004 09:58 PM

I once saw a lady on the show who went to Ann Taylor. There were a couple of women who went to Express, and some actually went to Old Navy. I wonder if they make them go to those stores or if they are just suggestions, and the people don't know any better.

RedefinedDiva 09-16-2004 10:31 AM

I also have seen people go to Ann Taylor and other type stores. Homegirl, that got the Bart Simpson, went to H & M. I think that they point them in the direction of stores, yet they may have a little free will. I think that they have to go to certain stores for the video footage and they may have to do a few "plugs" for these higher-end stores (not that they really need them  ).

I think it's about quality and fit. One thing that I know it bigger people CANNOT wear cheap clothes. Cheap clothes are so unflattering. Therefore, they benefit from quality clothing. Also, sometimes higher end clothing lines fit like gloves on some people. They are usually tageted for smaller people and they usually fit them well.

Aside from that, if I had a free $5,000 I might splurge on a Prada shirt, bag, or pair of pants just because! Hey, when else will you get the opportunity? :p

NinjaPoodle 09-17-2004 03:49 PM

I love the TLC version, never seen the BBC version.

cept' they can't touch the hair. ;)

MeezDiscreet 10-02-2004 03:17 PM

who watched last night's episodes? that first chick had a bad attitude. she called clinton a faggot. she called stacy a bag and an evil b****. i didn't like her and i didn't like what nick did to her hair. some people need fullness at the bottom of their hair and not everyone needs a razor cut. so many people's hair ends up looking the same.

in the second episode, i did like what nick did to her hair but i liked it even better when they showed her 3 months later and it had grown out into a really cute style.

in the previews for next friday's episode, there's a brother that will getting the wardrobe makeover and in 2 scenes it looks like he's hopping, alpha phi alpha style. i usually don't watch when they have men on there but i might have to watch that one.

CrimsonTide4 10-02-2004 05:27 PM

I saw it for the first time ever today while laying on the couch letting my WOMANHOOD perform. :o

I think the man is named John but he wore socks with sandals. oh and he had a SKIRT in his closet  but there is another ep coming on at 7 with Cynthia. I will definitely have to watch again.

Y'all are turning me into TV junkies. I also watched today's ep of While You Were Out -- kitchen for the mom got remodeled.

Thanks NeoSoulChild for passing this one along. :)

our style gets imitated all the time. MeezDiscreet, Imma need you to check real closely, though. I highly doubt you'd see a "true" Alpha brother anywhere near a makeover show....

it's late but i just finished watching my recorded episode of the show and i had to log on so i wouldn't forget. tony, he was, indeed, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. he was nominated by his colleagues and his girlfriend. as i said, from his stepping in the previews, i instantly thought he was an alpha. when he was trying on clothes, he commented how he liked one certain gold shirt because it was his fraternity colors. clue #2. at the end(after he had become quite fashionable, i must say), he was posing and gave the alpha salute. so there you have it... "true" or not." :p :D

Larger people shouldn't wear cheap clothes, but sadly, many of us are often stuck with them if we don't live in major metropolitan areas or do the catalog/Internet thing. From a clothes perspective, I'm thankful for being in SoCal.

Much of what I wear is bridge-quality: Talora/Nordstrom Encore Gold Label, Ellen Tracy, Dana Buchman, Talbots Woman (although I get them cheap, LOL). Nicer things fit better on me (I wear roughly a 14 on top and 18 on the bottom).

I can rock cheap stuff, but I always like to mix it with status-style shoes and accessories. Honestly, I think people of color are judged more harshly, so I make an effort to look polished.

Neosoulchild 10-23-2004 12:34 PM

So did anyone watch last night? I recorded it and just finished watching the first episode with Belinda. She looked good. All that hair was just not working for her. Nick did a good job this time.

he did an AWESOME job!! and i've never seen stacy and clinton react that way to someone's new look! stacy actually cried!! she looked great! and i thought the red-haired woman was so adorable!!

RedefinedDiva 12-05-2004 11:03 PM

TTT

Did anyone else watch the $50,000 wardrobe makeover? The woman that was selected was beautiful. I LOVED her hair!! Her fashion sense was a bit wacky, but I liked her style. The wardrobe that she got was B-A-N-G-I-N-G!!! That Christian LaCroix suit was GORGEOUS!!!

Now, as for the haircut.... I like the fact that the hair color was blended, but I think that they should have given her some more color, or maybe even highlights. WTF does Nick make all women with natural hair look like Lisa Simpson? I could see that she did need a trim, but why cut the hair short in the back and leave it longer up top? He could have trimmed about an inch all around and she would have been good to go. Carmindy didn't do too badly this time, but she wasn't great either. In the end, I think that the haircut/makeup combo took away from her youthful look. She was still pretty, but in an older kind of way. The youthful look was kind of refreshing.

Can one of y'all please nominate me? I'll give you my address! :D

skeeliteful 12-06-2004 11:02 AM

I liked her style as well. But she REALLY needed some help on how to make her style more polished and put together and not so....random.

I agree Nick should have put some highlights or something in her hair. He is always quick to put some highlights in somebody's hair. I think because (like most hair stylists) they don't know what to do with natural textured hair and he did the next best thing....made her look like she stuck her finger in a socket. I could tell she didn't like it.

and the clothes....That LaCroix suit was off the hook! I think my favorite house she went to was Moschino.

And I don't think I'm that bad of a dresser...but I'll look a hot mess to get a new wardroobe!

She was just sitting there like "....uh, yeah... I...I...like it...." She has that "I'm gonna wash this mess as soon as I leave here" look on her face. Nick (and some other Caucasian stylists) act as if African-American is poisonous or something. At the end of the style, he asked her if she would be able to manage it! Nick darling, we can do the dayum thing with our hair!!!

They need to do like Queer Eye. They should change the stylists to go with the person. I saw an episode of QE with a guy that had locs. They took him to Khamit Kinks to get his locs washed and tightened. That's what WNTW should do. That way, people of color will get appropriate styles.

Neosoulchild 12-06-2004 10:01 PM

For some reason my dvr did not record it. :( I don't know what happened. I have the episode with the cop, but not the $50K episode. I'm mad. Hopefully it will come on sometime this week.

I agree that they should change the stylists sometimes. Carmindy can get condescending with people who just aren't into makeup. And Nick - well, he seems a little hesitant around Af-Am hair. I'll admit, homegirl's color choice was a little extreme, but couldn't we have gone w/ some highlights, a little something to make it multi-tonal????:( I think he took away some of her spark.

nikki1920 12-07-2004 05:07 PM

I thought he did highlight it, but I couldnt see anything. I wasn't really feeling her hair's shape, I was just kind of there. But that suit was TIGHT TO DEF!!! I was not feeling the multi colored coat, though. lol.. I want Stacey to go shoe shopping with me!!!

I admit Carmindy is a little heavy handed with the skin assessments  , but she usually does a really good job. I'm one who doesnt like to wear makeup, but I like her work.

Co-sign on the going to specialty hair shops for non-caucasian people..
