Earthsea
just saw an ad for the Earthsea mini-series on Sci Fi. Does anyone else remember reading those books in middle school? I really liked them. I read that Kristen Kreuk and Shawn Ashmore will be the lead roles which is promising. I bet Kreuk could kick some ass Tenar style if she needed to.
|
I read them. Should be interesting. I don't remember Tenar being an action heroine though :)
|
I read the first three a long time ago....but apparently there are like five out now. Haven't read the other two. A mini series will be....odd.
|
I've read the first four... I didn't realize there was a fifth one. I did a huge project on Ursula LeGuin in terms of her Taoist beliefs back in middle school. I really want to see these movies.
|
IIRC, the last of the series came out not long ago and wasn't, erm, well received.
Why would a mini-series of the book be odd? I think it could be really awesome. Le Guin has a fantastic, visual flair to her writing and I think Sci Fi will do a great job realizing it. |
If they do a mini-series, maybe it will get a happy ending. This whole retiring from Magery, losing your powers, and marrying a goat hered isn't very inspiring.

I never liked Earthsea that much. There are a few much better series out there that I would like to see made into a mini-series berfore this one.
|
maybe but I'm still pretty pscyhed that its being made. Earthsea, IMO, never got the recognition it deserved as a great Sci Fi series.
Did anyone check out the new website for it? Its really well done. Can't wait for December. |
bump to share that there is a newtrailer up!
|
Trailer's awesome.
I only recently started reading Earthsea and have been loving the books. I'm excited to see that someone's adapting it to TV -- plus we get the yummy Shawn Ashmore... Sounds promising, i'll tune in. |
Totally. The whole production just looks beautiful and I can't wait to see how they bring Le Guin's work to life.
|
Two weeks left until the premiere!!
A friend of mine, while flying home for winter break said she saw commercials on the airplane. Go figure |
seriously? Thats cool. I saw one in a theater the other day but I an airplane would've taken me by surprise.
I was looking at the site the other day and found this wizard stuff. Kinda fun. Never thought you could get a wizard certification before. Okay so the show comes on on the 13th? I'm so there. |
The only thing a little off was the casting . . .
Ged is supposed to be really dark in the book and Tenar is supposed to be very pale . . . I didn't the girl they cast for Tenar had the kind of look that the book portrays . . . |
Interesting. Kristin Kreuk (the girl that plays Tenar) is actually exactly as i pictured her to be in the book.
I try not to judge before I watch, so I'm still looking forward to this. |
This week I recorded it, because I didn't have the time to watch it. I also received LOTR:ROTK EE, and didn't have time to watch it. Yesterday I watched LOTR:ROTK EE. Then I watched Earthsea. Bad move. Earthsea seemed really low budget compared to LOTR:ROTK EE. The acting sucked, the special effects sucked, etc. I was expecting more based on what the SciFi channel recently did with Battlestar Gallactica.
I never read the books, and the story was sort of interesting. I give it a C- because it wasn't terrible, but there is no way that I'll spend another 3 hours (because I fastforwarded through the commercials) of my life watching it again. |
I watched parts of it. It didn't seem that good. Like Russ said, it didn't use special effects that well . .. its using modern CGI effects but less skillful than movies from the early nineties.
Acting was so-so. And it seems like they radically tranformed the story line . . but I only watched parts . . it just didn't engage me. |
The miniseries was really disappointing. I've never read the books; I was going in with an open mind. The trailers looked good, the cast had some good names in it, and I had heard good things about the reviews. In fact, I had anticipated seeing this movie for several weeks. However, it just fell flat. :( I completely lost interest within the first hour. I watched the whole thing (both installments), but it never managed to capture my interest (though I kept watching in hopes it would). The acting, plot and cinematography were not compelling. With all the hype this movie received, I feel let down.
